An OK meal for $120, not $200+
Service 4*,food 3*,prices 2* We've dined at plenty of expensive restaurants, and we have come to expect the food to match the prices. The tuna crudo was so overwhelmed by the spicing that it disapeared. The foie gras mouse was fine and delicate, but served with a doughnut that was as good as a Krispy Kreme. Really? How on Earth did it find its way to our table from breakfast? The bouillabaise, a bit skimpy -3clams, 4 mussels, no soup,no rouille. The branzino was a decently sized piece. The pork chop was tasty, but chewy and on the dry side. Two glasses of wine, no dessert or coffee. With 20% tip, north of $200. OK, but not worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyCustomer Service Issue
Four of us had dinner at 1789 last evening, 16 December 2023. The food was very good and our server was extremely attentive to our table. The issue I have is that we were sent a $100.00 dollar gift certificate by a previous General Manager for poor service that we received during a visit in August 2019. To ensure that the gift certificate was still valid I called on 11 December and spoke to one of the manager's. I explained how we had received the gift certificate and the certificate date which was dated 2018, though we were told by the past manager who sent the certificate that it would still be valid when used. I also explained that we had not used the certificate during the COVID-19 pandemic years. During the 11 December phone call the restaurant manager, told me that the gift certificate 'would still be valid.' When we went to pay the bill last evening I was told by the server that the gift certificate was not valid since there was a 2018 expiration date on the card. I would not have used the gift certificate if I had been told on 11 December that it could no longer be used. Since the server stated again that the certificate could not be honored even though I spoke with a restaurant manager who said it would be valid, I then asked to speak with a manager. The manager with whom I had spoken telephonically on 11 December then came to our table. He then stated that he told me on the phone that the gift certificate probably could be used. My family and I have visited 1789 on many previous occasions. Though we were extremely perplexed that the gift certificate was not accepted after proactively calling several days in advance of our dinner reservation and being told that it would be honored, we were more disappointed by the manager's negative attitude and change in his response to my initial telephonic inquiry. As noted, I would not have attempted to use the gift certificate if I was told by the manger on 11 December that the gift certificate could not be honored. After this negative experience with the manager, unfortunately we will never come back to 1789 again. Dave S.

Don’t order dessert. The peach upside down cake was the worst. Dry . Couldn’t eat it. Heard all the staff suggesting the chocolate bomb. Literally it was edible but not great - the peach upside down cake was diagusting
Be the first to ReplyInteresting building, ok food & service
Great ambiance and building. Ok service; it was formal at first but lowered as the meal progressed to the point I had to ask the staff to quit reaching across my face to refill the water which I’ve never had to ask someone before. The two waitstaff that took our orders were fantastic though. Food was alright. My steak was slightly over cooked and the octopus was also just ok as was the rest of our food. Wine selection was good and the recommendations went well with the food. We also had a cocktail before the meal and that was fine. Seems like the place is betting on its history and building to bring people in. Overall it wasn’t a total disappointment and was a nice stop in Georgetown to take our teenagers. Don’t miss the Transformers outside the house across the street.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere, fantastic food, attentive & friendly service.
Absolutely the restaurant we remembered it to be. Excellent food, attentive & friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. We returned to 1789 after a great dining experience there back in 2007, the last time we were in DC. My best friend and I remembered it so fondly and how we wanted to eat everything on the menu back then - and nearly did with how much we ordered. It was the same this time! The gazpacho was so great to start and even though I'm not generally a pork lover, the server wholeheartedly suggested it and I'm so glad she did. The spaetzle it came with was incredible. Really loved the whole experience and I wish I was in DC more often so I could eat here more regularly. It's not cheap, but it's so worth it.

Absolutely fabulous dining - all dishes had unique and special taste. Both entrees and deserts met our expectations. Also the service was unique.

Had a fabulous meal here, celebrity a birthday. Staff was super friendly and efficient an the food was amazing! The atmosphere feels intimate and is relatively quiet so easy to have a conversation over dinner. I'd highly recommend and would definitely return!
Be the first to ReplyNice quiet gem in GT
Definitely one of the best restaurants in GT. Not cheap but worth the price Food Very well prepared. Not huge portion, reasonably sized, artistically presented, thoroughly flavored. Service One of the best. The service was relatively quick. Everyone was so friendly Ambience Classic. Very cozy Location Very accessible from Georgetown Inn. Close to GT University

What wonderful experience. Our dinner was beyond superb - with the staff on an equal footing. Casey, the hostess could not have been more accommodating. Randy behind the bar actually came to check on our satisfaction with the meal during dinner. The recommendations of our server Stephen were perfect. We've been on the road for two weeks eating at the very best restaurants in Pa., Va., SC, (Planters Inn in Charleston) NC (Ole Edwards Inn - Relais), Ga. and Kiawah (The Sanctuary) - this was far and away the best dinner yet. Kudos to 1789. We thank you!

The dining room is small and homey (with fireplace and wooden beams). I have not had service like this in years! Hats off to Lindsey (our server). She was so attentive and courteous and helpful. Really, just perfect and highly professional. The food was fun and delicious. We started with the escargots and mushrooms. The menu described them as being in a croissant. It would be more correct to say that they were topped with mini-palmiers...but nevertheless, the flavors were wonderful. My companion had a margarita, which again was different than expected...but very refreshing and only lightly sweetened (much to her liking). For our entrees we had Wagyu Short rib with polenta, and rockfish that was very artfully plated with three colors/flavors of sauce. Our side dish was rosti, which came out looking like a cross between fish sticks and tater tots. Yet, they were perfectly crispy and when paired with harissa aioli, hard to resist. If you are getting the impression that the meal was a memorable experience, you would be right. A great balance of classic dishes modernized in unexpected but delicious ways. For dessert, we enjoyed the chocolate boule and strawberry delight. Both were so complex and again, artfully presented. The strawberry plate presented, I think, six small takes on strawberry dessert: ranging from warm rhubarb cake to foam, meringues, ice cream and a chocolate covered strawberry! If you are going for a birthday, as I did, you will truly feel feted. Savor the small details: like the fact that they print "Happy Birthday" on the menu of the celebrant. Considering the level of service we received, the prices were well worth it. Find an excuse to treat yourself to this indulgent night out! You will not regret it.
Be the first to ReplyEarly Valentine's Day Dinner
We dined the Friday before Valentine's Day to enjoy a special dinner and select from the full menu (rather than the prix-fixe Valentine's Day menu). Everything was truly delicious--which was expected--but we were impressed by the myriad of unique flavors and pairings (e.g., the smoked oysters and brussel sprouts). Appetizers were generously-portioned, as were the entrees. The drinks were made consistently (brown butter old fashioned, espresso martini, and the Dancer mocktail). The un boule au chocolate looked like delicate art--so pretty; also delicious. Service was excellent, too--very professional, friendly, prompt, and attentive without hovering. This is expensive fine dining, but we felt we got our money's worth for sure.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent cuisine with historic ambience
1789, located in historic Georgetown, was named for the year Georgetown University was founded. It features a historic dining experience for those with a desire for a classic French cuisine. We enjoyed the farmhouse salad, escargot croissant, and Hokkaido scallops as starters followed by ravioli scarpinocc, braised wagyu short rib, roasted Rohan duck breast and rack of lamb as entrees. Desserts, hot tea and coffee completed the delicious dinner. We look forward to dining at 1789 again. Reservations are best.

This handsomely decked out restaurant is cozy in a sophisticated way. It has very good service. Be prepared for an expensive evening. The problem is the food. The dishes offered are not balanced. That is, the mixture of ingredients in many of the menu items do not taste very good. .

Average experience for a highly rated restaurant. Nice setting. Good service. Table was small and seats were uncomfortable The food was average across the board. Some dishes looked nice, I guess.
Be the first to ReplyStill got it
We dined at 1789 after moving away 8 years ago. It is still the classiest act in town. Expert, warm professional service and stellar cooking. I had tomato salad and halibut and hubby had a cheese board and filet. Everything was cooked perfectly. We had a nice bottle of rioja too. Our corner banquet overlooked the Exorcist house too!
Be the first to ReplyWorth the Drive for Fine Dining!
We were so delighted to see 1789 participating in Restaurant Week and even more excited when we were able to get a reservation for dinner. When we want to dine, we do not mind driving from Baltimore to 1789. Even though the dress code has been relaxed, we still dress to enjoy this elegant restaurant. It had been several years since our last visit, mostly due to Covid restrictions. Another pleasant surprise was the addition of the first floor restrooms. Because of that, we were able to invite another couple to join us for dinner. She is recovering from a broken leg and could not possibly do stairs.
We actually arrived early for our reservation. We were warmly greeted and, as stated on their website, we were requested to show IDs and our vaccination cards. We were seated at a table near the fireplace as we requested in the John Carroll Room. Ruta, our server, was right there to welcome us and effortlessly attended to our every need. The service at 1789 is always exemplary. The gentlemen started off with cocktails and the ladies enjoyed Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines. We must compliment the chef on the extensive menu that we were presented with for Restaurant Week. Two of us started with the Crispy Lobster coated in Panko breadcrumbs with a papaya and napa cabbage with a Thai basil sauce. It was very tasty, but a little too spicy for us. My husband had the American Wagyu Tartare with shallots, cornichon, parmesan, pomme Rosti and black garlic. Our friend (who is not a lover of soup) decided on the Butternut Squash soup with coconut panna cotta, cranberry jam, apples and toasted pumpkin seed. She was thrilled with her choice.
We enjoyed the following entrees: Brioche-Crusted Halibut with roasted fingerling potatoes, fennel, grilled leeks in a Saffron-mussel broth, two Roasted Racks of Lamb with Israeli couscous, Cippolini onions, eggplant puree with Chermoula; and the Duo of Beef which was a grilled NY strip and a Braised Short Rib with sweet potato puree and baby carrots. We were all thrilled with our entrees. They were beautifully prepared and presented. For our sweet ending, we had the Green Apple Charlotte, Vanilla Cheesecake and a Dark Chocolate Gateau, which was presented with a lighted candle to celebrate my birthday. It was so worth the drive to 1789. Thank you so much for a most enjoyable evening!
George Washington would have approved.
This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. It has that old revolutionary war Georgetown charm. Carpet could be updated, but overall the atmosphere is cozy. Food is chef quality. We were here for Thanksgiving and they had a set menu. I had the halibut which was probably the best o ever had. Cooked to perfection. My partner had the filet which was perfectly cooked and could cut with a butter knife. Overall experience for charm and good food gets all thumbs up. Not a trendy place, but definitely a Georgetown staple.
Be the first to ReplyUnrealistic Expectations
A very good restaurant, I just had unrealistic expectations. I have wanted to eat at 1789 since I was a Georgetown freshman decades ago. It used to be the most highly rated restaurant in DC, but turned out to be just very good, vice amazing. The crab and tuna appetizers were outstanding. My halibut was disappointing. Good, but certainly not one of the better halibuts (too dry and not much flavor) I have ever had. In fact, I have actually pan-fried halibut better at home and I am no chef. Both of my friends had the beef tenderloin. They did not comment on it, perhaps because I was the host. My guess is it was OK. In sharp contrast, they both raved about their desserts. My buddy had a beautifully arranged plate which featured what looked like a chocolate covered donut (the donut was actually ice cream). He and his wife had driven up from Florida for the weekend. He said he would make the drive again just to get that dessert.
Service was good and I thought the prices were reasonable. The atmosphere and music were both outstanding.
Ambiance and excellent service
If you like historical buildings then this is your place. Unique and full of character. If you like excellent service that is competent, attentive and efficient this is the place for you. And the food was superb, not huge portions but just enough. They provided us with a tour of the restaurant along with the history. We went to Fitzgeralds which adjoins 1789 and had an after dinner drink. Perfect.
Be the first to ReplyHistorical ambiance
Superb food quality and very attentive host that even gave us the history of the restaurant. Only reason not 5 stars is food came out too quickly (couldn’t quite relax and enjoy ourselves in the historical atmosphere). But we didn’t have apps so that may have made the experience last longer.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food and atmosphere
We have been coming here 2-3 times per year for 25 years for special celebrations. This was our first time back since pandemic started and since their new chef began. It was also the first time we have eaten indoors since covid-19. The staff was its usual : professional and friendly, although many were new. Most importantly, the food was fabulous. Absolutely exquisite. We both got brioche crusted halibut. Strawberry shortcake. Perfect way to celebrate special birthday. Worth the splurge. And of course the atmosphere in the dining room is always a pleasure, and we felt safe being inside.
Be the first to ReplySpecial night out
We wanted to treat our daughter and her husband to a special night in celebration of her graduation. We had eaten at 1789 once before years ago and recall it was enjoyable. Well it was even better the second time around. The food and service were excellent! It was a wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion. It also has a very romantic ambience for couples - great place to celebrate an anniversary. I would absolutely return when back in DC.

Second time at 1789.
Food was great. Staff was excellent. Love the ambiance. Bourbon list superb.
Just a great dining experience.
Will always come back here when I visit Washington.
Wonderful evening!
We had the best seat in the restaurant right in front of a fireplace with fire on a cold winter evening in DC. Food was phenomenal, service was impeccable, food was sensational.
Be the first to ReplyExcelkent Restaurant excellent food
We visited this restaurant to celebrate my 70th birthday, having reserved our table from the U.K., and were more than impressed with the very personal service, and the exceptional food.
From the minute we arrived to when we finally left everything was first class, the menu more than catered for my wife's vegetarianism, and my Lamb Rack was cooked to pefection.
I cannot speak too highly of this rextaurant.
