A. Wong London Reviews from The Last Year
Incredible dining experience
A visit to A.Wong has been a long time coming but now after our amazing lunch on Saturday we just can’t wait to return and enjoy the full dinner experience. The restaurant is situated on Wilton Road and only a short walk from Victoria Station. When we arrived the place was already full and had a lively and friendly atmosphere. We received a fabulous welcome before being taken downstairs to the Forbidden City Bar for an aperitif. Here we enjoyed the A.Wong Negroni and the special Gin and Tonic. You also got to see the chef’s making the Dim Sum. Now it was time to head upstairs to our seats at the counter in front of the bar ready to begin the afternoon’s festivities. We opted for the Touch of the Heart Tasting menu that included a wine pairing. This would be fifteen courses and five glasses of wine priced at £195. Personally I thought it was definitely worth it. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and professional throughout our lunch as they explained every single dish and recommendations on how it would be best enjoyed. The sommelier was also excellent and the wine pairings were amazing. The menu includes some absolutely stunning Dim Sum to begin before moving on to dishes including Memories of Peking Duck , the Cantonese Chicken , Wonton with Garlic , Shanxi ‘lamb burger’ , dessert and petit fours. Every single dish was beautifully presented and the flavour combinations were simply incredible. These are matched perfectly with the wine chosen by head sommelier Mickael who it was a pleasure to meet. This really was a team at the top of their game and now I just cannot wait to come back for the full evening experience. If you haven’t been to A.Wong yet then I would highly recommend you do so. This is Chinese food like you’ve never tasted before and the service is excellent so my recommendation is to Book Now. Many Thanks to Andrew and his team for a fantastic dining experience and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Michelin Chinese, but a little disappointing
Pros—delicious food, attentive service, knowledgeable staff Cons—precious, felt more 1 star than 2 Michelin stars. Didn’t see a reason to return.
Average at best
I was looking forward to 4 people eating here but overall I was left disappointed. It wasn’t the experience a 2 star restaurant should be. We were shuffled into a dark basement on arrival thinking this was our dining area. Whilst we ordered cocktails the service was disinterested as we didn’t want vintage champagne. The food/ drinks menu on the website is less in terms of variety is incorrect . A guest ordered a £18 glass of red wine. It was clearly “ off “ to everyone on the table. Took 30 minutes to replace it despite asking multiple times The lunch time tasting menu was good but a bit “ gimmicky” but overly dessert orientated so after spending £1200 for 4 for lunch we were left hungry but feeling sick and felt our £ would be spent better elsewhere. I wouldn’t return
A brilliant experience
Just a brilliant meal. We did the Dim Sum a la carte, and the staff guided us through our choices with wisdom. (One criticism- a confusing menu layout. It's worth checking the menu online before going.) The food was stunning; definitely 2 Michelin star level. Plate after plate of superb dishes, all cleverly designed. The new lemon dessert was a triumph. There was always plenty of staff on hand, and there was never a wait for food, even at the beginning. The tea was delicious. These dishes are cooked to perfection. My greatest thanks to the talented and hardworking staff- you are part of something special!
Over priced random food …
A rather disappointing, it used to be one of my favourites chinese restaurants, creative food … but no anymore , trying too hard to make too many different dishes, but too random, all sorts super rich flavours don’t really go together… as it was tasting menu only for the dinner, we didn’t have choice . £200 per person plus wine etc , we ended up £400 per head. Any restaurant in China is better than this Michelin star restaurant The atmosphere and setting is boring, we may just go to Park Chinois , Hakkasan, Roka, The Maine etc so many excellent restaurants, offer much better food at much nicer setting with many very interesting entertainment too … they all cost less per head
Greatest way to celebrate our 52nd Wedding Anniversary. Thank you!!!!!
sommelier Andrew THE CHEF. Roger the general manager. We had lunch on one day and dinner on a different evening. Plus a lunch two weeks earlier. Three of the greatest food experiences ever. The whole serving staff are absolute professionals and do not miss a beat. They, as a restaurant receive two Michlin stars. They deserve more than the maximum three stars. The dishes, whether it is dinner or lunch are done like a Chinese version of Spanish Tapas. The dim sum is not like regular dim sum. The dishes are perfectly made with combinations of flavors that combined for a whole new taste. None of the ingredients overwhelm the others. When we sat down for dinner, Looked at the menu and asked if we were to pick one from each group. “ No was the answer, you get it all. I think about 18-20 courses. Each one was amazing. The service was impeccable. Usually two servers bringing the food. They explained every dish at the time of serving. We had the pleasure of celebrating our 52nd wedding anniversary on the evening dinner. They made it very special. As we entered the front entrance the staff lined up on each side and said welcome back and wished us for our anniversary. I actually forgot that I had mentioned it. Lulu the sou chef hardly looked up from her very focussed work. But when she did she had beautiful welcoming smiles. All the staff also had similar welcoming smiles. Mikael the sommelier besides being very knowledgeable about all the wines that they have to offer, he knows how to make you feel very special. I love that Andrew remembers us and treats us like family. He has very warm inviting smiles. Nathalie, Andrew’s wife also treats us the same way. The food speaks for itself. Every dish is brilliant and delicious. Look at the pictures of all the dishes that we ate. I am so happy the my wife was born in London so we have many reasons to come here. That means that we can eat here at least twice or three times each trip.
The biggest problem with eating dim sum is: there could be
The biggest problem with eating dim sum is: there could be too many delicious bites to describe. The restaurant itself is pretty big, maybe 60 seats including a dozen at the bar, and almost every seat was full during my weekday prixe-fixe lunch. The servers were knowledgeable and personable... and busy. A small new item arrived in front of me about every 5 minutes, plus the wines. And the food was excellent: the "999 layered scallop puff," was technically exacting, and beautifully presented... The "Memories of Peking Duck," was also delicious, although I can't ever remember having shaved truffle and caviar on my Peking duck... my local Cantonese restaurant must be in a more "working class" neighborhood. The problem, of course, is everyone, including me, loves each bite, and wants more... but doesn't want to wait for the next visit. 2024 04 30. M2.
Food 4.
5/5.0 Service 4.0/5.0 Value 3.0/5.0 Decor 4.0/5.0 Overall 4.5/5.0 Very cool spot in what has become a not-that-cool part of town. The dinner prix fixe pricing was certainly not shy, but the courses were aplentiful and felt okay. A bit disconcerting that few if any diners appeared to be Chinese, though the profile of the kitchen was comforting. The courses are designed to take the diner through certain regions of China. The food in general was reasonably creative and quite delish. Glad to see good Chinese food in town. Would love to come back for dim sum one day.
Superb dim sum & service
Super lunch at amazing A Wong. 4th visit and they just get better and better. Team made fuss of us: Iris organised our booking and John welcomed us as returning stars. Michael is exceptional sommelier / such a fun character. Dim Sum some of best in world alongside Man Wah and Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong. A peculiar location opposite a Sainsbury’s in Pimlico, but once inside such a great experience. Only two star restaurant in London where a bottle of wine and sumptuous food don’t require second mortgage. Thank you Andrew & Nat.
The best you will get...
By far the best Chinese/Mandarin restaurant I've been to in the world. I've been here four times and it just get's better and better each time... I've been a patron since the days when Andrew's parents had the previous restaurant and it's totally incredible what Andrew and his team have done and how they consistently deliver on extremely high expectations. The only place I can compare this, even remotely to is the Man Wah at the MOHK. A previous reviewer compared A. Wong to Hakkasan. It's like comparing a Ferrari to a Prius...
Amazing
Lovely lunch. Amazingly delicious food. Lovely presentation. Very friendly service. Nice ambiance. Very deserving of its two stars !
Not accommodating of allergies and rude about it
Terrible place. Rude emails around allergies, would not recommend. We went there a couple years ago and very friendly emails, something must’ve changed as the welcome emails now are rude and not what you’d expect from two Michelin stars.
Collections of China menu
This was our second visit to A Wong. They were extremely helpful as they had to cancel our booking, but arranged to swap nights with another restaurant we were going to later in the week so that we were still able to go. We had pre-dinner drinks in the small bar downstairs and were then seated in the restaurant. The staff were very efficient and knowledgeable and introduced each dish explaining what region of China it was from and in what order to eat them. We mentioned the charismatic waiter who had served us last year and "Uncle Ben" came through to see us and also bade us goodbye when we left. The food was very good, although I preferred the Menu of Five Movements which we had last year. Just my personal preference, but my taste buds became a little overwhelmed as so many of the dishes had strong individual flavours. However we will definitely go again.
Best in the world, we thought
Instead of the more relaxed dim sum lunch, which is the best in London, we reserved the classic tasting menu for the evening, and it was almost a three hour experience. Just when you thought they had given you the best tasting bitelet you’d had in your entire life, they would serve you something even tastier. It was truly decadent the way it went on and on for hours as the surprises kept coming. The kitchen team is genius. We sat at the bar, with a view of the open kitchen and watched them work. We chatted with several waiters and with the charming and beautiful Mrs A Wong, who was serving part of the time. It is their family business and she is a formidable person and a perfectioness in her own right. We always have something to talk about, so the hours passed nicely as we were barraged by 28 different dishes, each one different, all well presented, with some bordering on the highly elaborate but all of them shamelessly good. It’s hard to single anything out, everything was excellent. The bill is as eyewatering as the food is mouthwatering, but by then you don’t care because it’s actually good value for the effort they’ve put into it. I am not sure why anyone would ever give them a bad review or less than three Michelin stars. Everything throughout the entire experience was exceptional and praiseworthy. We’ve been coming for about ten years, and have watched them evolve into being one of the top handful of best in the world. It’s a good idea to skip lunch if you are headed to A Wong for dinner.
We made a reservation here for a la carte lunch, and it was
We made a reservation here for a la carte lunch, and it was a wonderful experience, but not all of the food was a total hit. Everything is priced by the piece, so it does add up. I definitely had some favorites and some I wouldn't order again, but everything was beautifully plated and I had a wonderful experience. One of my favorites was the scallop cheung fun. They had such unique and innovative plays on traditional dim sum food. Like the shumai and har gao were even done differently than usual (and done extremely well!!). The service was also quite nice, but I did have to get their attention a couple times to notice I needed a refill on my tea. The restaurant itself was set up in an interesting way. If you arrive early, they take you to a waiting area in their basement which is quite interesting. However, I'm not a fan of their outdoor dining section--it feels a little makeshift and doesn't feel as upscale as what you might expect a 2 Michelin star place to feel like. I'd love to come back here to do the tasting menu for dinner as I hear it's a bit different from the lunch menu. Overall, will likely be back, but it is pricey with some hits and misses, so won't be a regular occurrence.
