Had a group of 7 in the Tatami Room.
Group loved the Japanese Shochu (Barley). The food here is always amazing. We ordered 1/2 the menu lol. The Miso Cod, Yellowtail Collar, and the Wagyu A5 were the table favorites. Service and Atmosphere were great, and I think everyone would say it was a "memorable" meal. Hard to beat the experience.

Stopped by for a quick lunch on a blistering winter day! Got the gozen set ($32), with washyu beef + cod + sashimi. It certainly hit the spot though portion size on the smaller side - could have honestly gone for a few more pieces of beef! Quick and courteous staff.

Went there for lunch quite a few times and have been never disappointed by their gozen set. It literally has everything and you just can't go wrong with it. Attentive server and fast food serving too. This place is always packed with locals. If you want to get a (good) seat, def reserve first.

While some of the food was very good, most of the dishes were just average or even below average. Drinks:Lychee martini: 2/5 It got very water down and I could barely taste any lychee flavor. Appetizer: Agedashi tofu: 4/5 Love the sauce but wish the tofu to be softer/smoother. Age shishito: 4/5 Portion was very small. We basically got one piece of shishito per person. Flavor was good though. Tako wasabi: 5/5 Perfect amount of wasabi and not too spicy! Highly recommend if you eat raw food! Sesame asparagus: 5/5 Asparagus was perfectly cooked and the sesame sauce went very well with the asparagus!Assorted tempura: 2/5 The tempura was not crispy at all. Both the tempura and the sauce had almost no flavor. Could not even taste any salt on the tempura. Entree:Beef tongue: 3/5 The flavor was fine but it was way too chewy and it was very hard to bite through Grilled Salmon belly: 5/5 probably my favorite dish in the entire meal! The salmon was sooo moist and flaky!Unagi don: 5/5 Perfectly cooked rice with tender eel! Sukiyaki: 4/5 It came with beef, onion, tofu, and konjac noodle. It was too sweet for our taste and I wish there would be more beef and other toppings in there. Yakisoba: 2/5 This was just not what I expected for yakisoba. Traditional yakisoba is a dry stir fried noodle with yakisoba sauce (a Worcestershire based sauce) and this yakisoba was nothing like that. It had a very thick sauce on it. The entire dish was very wet and salty.Overall, this place was just okay. The portion of the dishes were very small and most of the entree also didn't come with rice. Since I came with a big group of people, I could try more dishes and most of the food here was a hit or miss. Given the price point, I don't think it was worth it and will probably not come again.
Be the first to ReplyI remember when this place first opened.
Must have been like ten yrs or more ago... it was awesome then. One of the few places that served ankimo. This was before all the izakaya and sushi omakase boom. Now this place has fallen off quite a bit. It doesn't seem that different from many of the other izakayas. In fact, it's a bit worse than other more trendy Japanese yakiniku or yakitori or izakayas. Shame.

We came here on Friday 6:30sh pm and got three seats without reservation. Very glad! We got the okonomiyaki, chicken meatball, sukiyaki and spicy tuna roll and four little pieces of fish that cost $16. I'd say they're pretty good but just skip that fish (so not worth it). The highlight of them whole experience is the black sesame pudding is a must! On the other side; I wonder if it's authentic Japanese food; because it seems run by Chinese (which should be a Chinese food then)

Japanese restaurant a couple of blocks away from Grand Central Station. The staff was very friendly and respectful. If you make reservations or call ahead, they might sit your table in one of their rooms where you leave your shoes outside. Pretty cool experience. The food was ok. The age dashi tofu was subtle and flavorful at the same time. The Salmon belly was also good. We had a chicken dish with eggs, onions and rice that was pretty bland. We also had a cold duck dish that wasn't that appetizing. The pork belly was overcooked and chewy.

Exceptional food and wonderful ser
Be the first to ReplyFirst let me say the food was quite good.
BUT I had booked this place to bring friends visiting from out-of-town and it was very embarrassing. First we walk in and there is the distinct smell of pesticide. The interior is very ugly and not impressive at all. I'm not sure why it is listed as a "classy" place. Although the food was quite good I was kind of embarrassed for bringing my out-of-town guests.

Even with the bright multicolored wallpaper outside this place, I feel like it's easy to miss. It's a short walk from grand central station, so easy to travel to and from. Inside, it is beautifully decorated and gives the feel like you are transported to Japan. There are few semi private seating areas that gives more privacy for diners. We had dinner here the other night and ordered from the restaurant week menu. For the restaurant week menu, it was $45 per person.I got the Washu Beef Cutlet Teppan Yaki. They bring out the raw meat on one dish and a small grill that they light a small fire under. You have about 7 min to cook your meat before the fire goes out. It was fun to do, but I did not get the timing right and the fire died before I was done cooking my meat to how I would have liked. I also had the spicy tuna roll which was filling. Highly recommend the black sesame pudding! It was full of black sesame flavor and good texture. I tried my friend's black cod which was delicious, sweet but savory.

I made the reservation but it was my sister and her family who went. Here is her review.. Everything was bad, food, service etc.. Terrible cocktail menu, no cocktails available that aren't carbonated. ย The worst, don't go there.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome place with delicious food.
ย They have a limited selection of sushi and lots of grilled options. ย Sitting at the bar was a treat. ย Got to see their techniques first-hand and really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place.

Everything here was so good! I felt like I was back in Japan. I honestly can't choose a favorite because all the dishes were so good, but the tuna sashimi was absolutely amazing - it melted in my mouth - and the sukiyaki broth was perfect for a cold winter evening! The Tako Wasabi was something new to me but probably a star dish for me as well. This restaurant uses real wasabi and you can tell when you try it! I was also pleasantly surprised by the black sesame pudding - upon first glance, it doesn't look like much but once you scoop into it, you get this creamy texture and it isn't too sweet either! The best compliment you can give :') This restaurant is on the pricier side, but I would still recommend this for any day and any time!

Honestly the food here is quite disappointing, especially for the price. Everything was quite average, if not slightly below average given the price points being charged. I'm a big fan of izakayas, and have tried quite a few in NYC, and had been avoiding this place for a while due to the mixed reviews and the slightly higher price points. Seeing that they were doing NYC Restaurant Week, I decided to give it a try. We decided to make an 8:30 reservation for restaurant week. After rushing to arrive at 8:30, we were told that they stopped taking restaurant week orders at 8:15. It'd only been 15 minutes (their kitchen was still open btw, and many of the restaurant week items were still on their regular menu). Regardless though, we just decided to make the most of it and order from their regular menu. I tried the below items: Sukiyaki (2/5) - Sliced meat was tender, and it comes in a small hot pot. The soup base is overwhelmingly sweet though, it almost tasted like sugar water. I know Sukiyaki is supposed to be sweet, but this was way too sweet. Roasted Duck Breast (2/5) - While the taste was fine, at $17, there was maybe about 3-5 slices of very thinly sliced duck? It was so thin you could put it right into a sandwich as a cold cut. Miso Black Cod (3/5) - This was normal. Not outstanding, but good! Tender and flavorful as it usually is, albeit a small piece (they usually are though).Homemade Chicken Tsukune (4/5) - Loved this one! Chicken meatball was very tender and flavorful. It was $10 just for one stick though which is quite pricy given that it's chicken on a stick. Berkshire Pork Belly (2/5) - Pork belly was a bit dry and tasteless (tasted like light teriyaki sauce on top). Not a must order for sure. We also felt quite rushed throughout the meal. I think the restaurant officially closes at 10PM(?), but regardless if you're going to offer 8:30PM reservations to customers, you shouldn't make them feel rushed throughout.

Simple yet very well made food, the spot is in close proximity to the UN which makes it a good power lunch spot for diplomats. Go for lunch and order the lunch specials
Be the first to ReplyDecent spot for Japanese food in the city.
I came here on a Saturday night with some friends and we shared a bunch of dishes. The restaurant has an intimate atmosphere with dim lighting and calming music. We got the chicken karaage, a bunch of sushi rolls, the eel box, beef box, and the yakisoba. Everything came out relatively quickly and the food was delicious. I preferred the more traditional dishes over the sushi rolls, they were quite average and can be found at any sushi spot in the city. The eel box was the shining star of my meal, I highly recommend it and would come back just for it. The yakisoba was also interesting, it reminded me of a thick and rich tonkotsu type ramen - not the typical dry fried noodles I'm used to but I liked it. Overall a good spot to check out with or without a reservation since it wasn't too busy when we went.
Be the first to ReplyThey changed their menu from before Covid.
Lots of menu items like hotate butter and braised pork belly are gone. What's left is a hodge lodge of items that are not great. Used to love it here. Sad

A relative selected this restaurant, which is the only reason why we dined here. When you get past the overflowing garbage on the sidewalk enter into a traditional Japanese establishment. ย Pretty barren, unremarkable and poorly lit. After being requested to take off our shoes, and sitting down to the review menu, we informed waiter that our kids both have a sesame allergy and asked about sesame seeds while ordering. ย He "assured" us that he takes allergies seriously. Unfortunately, he brought our kids grilled burdock as the "vegetable" that had sesame tahini mixed in it and the white rice had sesame seeds on top. To finish it off, he brought complimentary sesame paste dessert at the end of the meal (!!!!!!), which was comical, not to mention dangerous. Luckily, our kids didn't eat the three dishes he brought them. What a joke!
Be the first to ReplyFirst of all if you are looking to have sushi do go here on
First of all if you are looking to have sushi do go here on Sunday night. They will not serve you sushi which was very disappointing. I really do not understand how you can just remove this from the offerings. If I would have known I would have gone somewhere else. This restaurant just happen to be two doors away from my hotel. I had the eel on a bed of rise which was pretty good. I appreciate the shredded egg under the eel and that it was tender and not boney. My hopes is that for the price of $29 it was Japanese sourced and not the usual Chinese crap that you see lately.
Be the first to Reply{Overall: 4; Food: 4} Atmosphere: 3.
5; Service: 3.5This is the best izakaya I've been to in NYC so far. All of the dishes had incredibly deep flavors. Only thing to keep in mind is that later in the evening they start to run out of certain dishes, and they only have a 10 minute grace period for reservations. We loved: *Suikiyaki - it comes in a small hot pot; great portion size*Unajyu - eel over rice; the eel was so tender, we ate this twice*Saba shioyaki - salted grilled mackerel
Be the first to ReplyGood restaurant.
Some dishes are great while some are good but not worth the price. You need reservations. I recommend the cold tofu, since it's made by the restaurant in a very organic and natural way, and it tastes great. I don't recommend the sukiyaki; it is over sweetened. I also don't really recommend the black cod that's cooked with miso, not because it's not delicious but because it's not worth the price. Overall a good restaurant that's a little overpriced. The staffs are super nice!
