Akiko's Restaurant San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

Tasting mneu had excellent dishes, some oversalted, which was unnecessary for sashimi. Service was attentive, but we expected more discussion with the staff about the food.
My review is somewhere between a 3 and a 4.
.. My husband and I came here for a special splurge valentine's day dinner. The service and the knowledge of the chefs and the servers is impeccable. They were very friendly and attentive, and a lot of their fish is aged with a special aging process that sets them apart from other sushi restaurants. The food was good, but unfortunately not super memorable. One of their most instagrammable dishes is the milktoast with fatty tuna and caviar, topped with gold flakes. It's a beautiful dish but I wasn't wowed by the taste. It is more for show than for flavor, especially with the over-the-top element of caviar and gold flakes. The cocktail and drink menu was pretty extensive -- and very expensive! Cocktails for $22-25 is crazy, even for SF! The vibe was kind of weird and sterile, I guess that's what you get for a super fancy restaurant in what's basically the FiDi. The clientele all seemed a little too comfortable with their privilege, a mix of bougie techie IDGAF kinda vibe. If the place wasn't so astronomically expensive, maybe I would be a little more forgiving on my rating, but I just can't justify the price tag for the experience. That said, the food was good and the chefs know what they're doing.
Expensive but tastes great
Food is expensive as you can imagine for a sushi restaurant in San Francisco, but the taste justifies the price. Besides traditional sushi, they also have some creative dishes which are amazing.
an amazing decadent meal in the city.
.. you'll leave feeling STUFFED after all the dishes and nigiri. they also had kohada which you rarely see in the states. great for a special night out
Not very good
The pictures of the food were misleading! Extensive menu online. Went for Valentines dinner, (also my wife’s birthday, reservations for 5 pm. First ones to arrive were seated at a 2 top at the front window. Very tight seating. Had other tables, larger for 3-4. Subsequent couples were seated there with more table space. We were not given a choice. Server wanted to know immediately our complete order. Usually in a sushi bar the ordering is open-ended depending on items available and the preparation style, and how the movement feels. Servers did not understand any Japanese! This is what we ordered: Sapporo beer (ok), hot tea, needed to wait for them to heat water. Yellowtail belly sushi (good taste but not appealing…fish not properly sliced…left strings attached), Maguro, (good, but very tiny pieces which were fragmented on the rice which was dry and cakey), Veggie gyoza (acceptable?), Caterpillar roll, (mediocre, not finished well), Ikura with quail egg, (sorry shapes that differed and very small), the worst thing was the spicy tuna hand roll…mealy and not spicy. Not a great dining experience for sushi lovers. Bill was $ 197.00 with tip. Worth maybe less than half the price. Suggest going to a real sushi bar.
AKIKOS may have moved locations, but the food and service
AKIKOS may have moved locations, but the food and service haven't changed a bit. The restaurant over delivers on both fronts. If you're looking for an incredible omakase experience, look no further than AKIKOS. Our menu consisted of: 1) Osechi - tako, herring roe, blackbeans 2) Sashimi - akami, shirako, makogarel 3) Robusută - lobster, leek, caviar 4) Chawanmushi - egg custard, duck liver, king crab & lobster gravy 5) Cioppino - cod, tomato & clam sauce 6) Shokupan - milk bread, toro, golden kaluga caviar 7) Sunomono - mirugai, pear, raspberries, muscat, cucumber 8) Zuke - soy cured bluefin tuna 9) Kawahagi - trigger fish 10) Ji-Kinmedai - goldeneye red snapper 11) Aori Ika - bigfin reef squid 12) Uni - sea urchin 13) Buri - matured yellowtail 14) Kohada - gizzard shad 15) Kamasu - young barracuda 16) Toro - bluefin belly 17) Anago - wild sea eel 18) Dessert - White sesame We also ordered an additional serving of Hotate (scallop) nigiri.

I came here on a Thursday afternoon to celebrate my friend's birthday and try their omakase menu. My first impression is that the restaurant's interior is beautiful. I loved the atmosphere and the staff was extremely welcoming. We had reservations so we got seated immediately at the bar. We then got offered either still or sparkling water and a hot towel for the hands. The menu consisted of 13 items for $150. The standouts to me were Robusuta, Chawanmushi and Kurodai. The nigiri's were all pretty good, but the pieces were on the smaller size compared to other omakase spots I've been to. Note that you can order more pieces after the set menu is finished for additional cost. At the end, we were served with a white sesame ice cream for dessert which I didn't find to be too special. Overall, I did enjoy this place (food, service, ambiance) but I do think the price is a bit steep for what you are getting.
Small but wonderfully competent Sushi plus.
Superbly recommended and it didn’t disappoint. Small 16 seater restaurant- you may have to write your name on the wait list and join the queue. Delicious egg plant starter followed by great daily special suggestions. The Toro and Butterfish Nigiri were top notch. Friendly efficient service made it a memorable experience.
Omakase for lunch was perfection.
Pricey but worth every penny. The omakase experience seems divisive; it's a thoughtfully plated, curated meal during which you relinquish control... and it was phenomenal.
After clarifying which Akiko's we booked, we headed over to
After clarifying which Akiko's we booked, we headed over to Folsom and entered a very spacious dining space with very tall ceilings and a pristine looking dining room. We came for a weekday birthday lunch, and we were seated at the chefs' counter, where we enjoyed the view of our chef plating each course of the $150 omakase. Apparently, it is omakase only. In front of us lay a warm, damp cloth and Aesop hand sanitizer. We started with Taiheikai sake, which surprisingly came in a wine glass. Makogarei - flounder, seasonal vegetables Great! served with skinned, sweet tomatoes and topped with greens Robusuta - lobster, leek, caviar Great! Lobster was cooked perfectly and sweet. Chawanmushi - egg custard, snow crab, lobster Good! Silky custard with shredded crab and lobster bits in savory broth. Shokupan - milk toast, toro, golden kaluga caviar Excellent! Perfect presentation of toasted shokupan with what looked like very precisely shaped toro, with a generous serving of caviar, topped with salt flakes and gold flakes, although I usually find gold leaf to be quite useless, but it does look nice here. Sunomono - surf clams, scallops, cucumber Good! I was most interested in the plate which looks just like a crumpled paper napkin. The sweet, tender scallops stood out the most on this plate. Before our nigiri courses, we received a small, wet, black, finger towel, which looked like it was in the shape of an Omega. Zuke - soy cured bluefin tuna Great! thick and meaty texture Kuromutsu - blue fish Great! smooth texture with a fatty taste Sawara - Spanish mackerel Great! sweet and meaty, torched to golden brown Shin Ika - young cuttlefish Good! smooth feel Sujiko - salmon roe Good! briny, bright orange, the only nigiri served in a golden spoon Kurodai - sea bream Great! sweet and meaty Toro - bluefin belly Good! Not the best toro and could be fattier, but still delicious. From the raw menu, we ordered 2 types of uni, which was fun to try side by side. $13 Nama Uni - short spine sea urchin, $13 Ooita Uni - organic long spine sea urchin Excellent! Both were delicious and served in golden spoons. The ooita was slightly creamier and sweeter. Matcha Ice Cream - sesame crumble Good! Matcha and black sesame are always nice together. Once again, topped with gold flakes. Great nigiri with quality fish and rice. I was pleased to have been served by a female sushi chef, who provided excellent service. It is not often that you see a woman behind the counter.
This has been on my sushi list for some time.
There are a lot of really nice sushi spots in SF, so was hoping this place would be in that top tier. The price point, around 180 is definitely in that top tier. First off...they got our preferences wrong. We did omakase and told our waiter that my friend can't do shrimp, but any other shellfish was fine. We ended up not getting ANY shellfish (either of us). The fish as well, just wasn't at that level that we're accustomed to for the best spots in the city (juni, wako, etc). The quality reminded me of hinata, but hinata has a MUCH friendlier price point. Also, I'm not sure if omakase saved us any money here fwiw. You should just order a la carte and just pick the pieces you want. Won't be back, and won't recommend this to anyone
Quite an experience from the usual.
Received lovely experience here with knowledgeable and attentive staff. From when I walked through the doors and when I left I was treated like a true guest! I highly recommend a seat at the sushi bar so we can see all the action and also talk with the chefs. They know the fish very well and can tell you the differences. All the dishes I had were unique from each other and the flavors really came out.

Since they moved locations and opened up near us, we decided to check it out for dinner. They did very well with the presentation of many of their dishes. The dishes that stood out to me were the chawanmushi and shokupan. The goldeneye red snapper nigiri was also delicious amongst the nigiris. The server was good with recommending sake that suit our palate and pair well with the fish. Overall, a pretty decent omakase. I'd recommend trying it out if you live close by.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
So we went here for the outstanding reviews and thought it was fine BUT….found a big issue. The 2 waitstaff were friendly and hard working and juggled takeout orders along with all the tables…it was a little chaotic but they managed but would have benefitted from a third… unfortunately the place is really too small for 3 waitstaff. We have had great sushi at many places and this was very good indeed but not all is perfect here. The primary issue is the sushi is being prepared by a chef with bare hands, no gloves. We sat at the bar 2’ from the chef and all food is being touched by bare fingers touching not only all the raw fish in the bar fridge in front of us and all the other ingredients for all the orders but also the sauce containers, take out containers, and the same wipe rag that is used to clean the prep area continuously after each order as well as clean the knife. There was a prep sink 2’ from the chef but for the entire 2 hours we sat at the bar no hand was washed with either water or soap at any time even after the chef needed to bandage his finger. All sushi places we have frequented have exhibited ultra sanitary food prep practices but not here and for that reason alone would not go back.
Perfect Japanese
Everything is so fresh, friendly service & genuine care about quality of food and what they serve. Cannot fault in any way. Perfect

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Appointment
I was waiting on the transfer for name but it hasn’t happened yet and my reservation is tonight , will it be an issue that is hasn’t changed into my name yet
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Just got scammed!
Thats unfortunate but you can always get your money back if they cancel the reservation.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
