My friend lives in Philly and has a pulse on the best restaurants, old and new. Almyra was no exception to the caliber of places she takes us to when we visit. There is a dress code here, and honestly it was nice to have a little pressure to dress nice. We all lead busy lives and have gotten kind of comfortable with dressing comfortable when we get together. Getting ready for Almyra felt like an event and was very reminiscent of when we would go out in our early 20s. The ambiance is so pretty and photo-worthy, a lot of pink and white flowers billowing out up and down the restaurant. The food... ohh the food. So many of the appetizers were calling out to us from the menu and it was hard to narrow down the selection. Ultimately we chose all 5 spreads, (whipped feta, smoked eggplant, Santorini fava, beet, edamame hummus) which came with pita bread and spiced rice crackers, Almyra chips (zucchini and eggplant chips with tzatziki), Saganaki (their famous flaming cheese), and spanakopita manti. The spreads were out of this world, so flavorful and garnished with the perfect compliment to the flavors of each spread. The spiced rice crackers were a pleasant surprise. The Almyra chips are ultra thin slices of eggplant and zucchini, battered and fried and simple and delicious. The Saganaki came with a little show, a waitress brought it to the table, poured the ouzo-honey emulsion on top and set it aflame! It was like (or was?) halloumi cut with the citrusy honey, so good and crisp! Last but not least- the spanakopita manti instead of the traditional phyllo triangles these were in little bit sized purse-shaped wontons, very delicious and gone too soon! The appetizers were my favorite portion of the meal. For our meal, my one friend and I were both interested in the filet mignon & chicken kebabs. We decided to get one of each and share along with a side of the feta mashed potatoes. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly and was tender but the chimichurri wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped it would be. The chicken kebab was my least favorite of the meal, the flavor tasted more citrus than apricot and the texture of the meat was very soft which is definitely a preference thing, nothing wrong with it, but I prefer the meat to be a bit firmer than it was. Our feta mashed potatoes didn't taste like feta at all which was disappointing because the fries sounded amazing, and I wish we would have gotten them instead. I will say the mashed potatoes were the PERFECT consistency, so though they didn't taste like feta, they did deliver on all other accounts!! For dessert we selected the cheesecake, which was very different from Italian or American cheesecake; it had a sponge cake on the bottom, topped with a yogurt based cheese mixture and on top of that "birds nest" phyllo- it was absolutely delicious! We also had baklava (how can you not??) and it was shaped into little rolls making the experience very different from traditional baklava but no less delicious. We had a great time and left happily full!
