Different...but in a good way
I decided to treat my nephew to a belated birthday/late lunch at this restaurant. He recommended this place as it had been on his list for a while. It is located on the first floor of the building, on the east side of Spadina, south of Queen. I couldn't find the front door, so I entered through a side entrance (I think there is a sign, but I didn't see one). The restaurant is divided into two sections - a row of bar seats and a row of dining tables. It's a pretty small, but intimate restaurant. They provided free coat check and there were hooks under the bar for purses, which is a must have in any dining establishment. While waiting for my nephew, I had one too many Pineapple Daiquiris. It tasted like you're on a beach in the Caribbean. Good thing I didn't drive that day! We started with warm cheesy bread and savory butter. After our appetizer, we each had the Aloette fried chicken, which came with lettuce wraps, pickles, and sauce separately. For dessert we split a Lemon Meringue pie. They even put a candle in it for my nephew's birthday. I'd definitely go again, but only with a small group (4 people max if I can get a booth). Also, make reservations, and make them early!

Nice Sunday lunch with comfortable street side booths. The chefs and front of the house really care about quality and service. We enjoyed a few glasses of wine, Hamachi Crudo, cheeseburger, fries and lemon meringue pie All were prepared perfectly. Highly recommend!

Walked by multiple times and decided to go for lunch, turned into one of the best meals I had in Toronto. Started with tomato and mozzarrella, varied assortment of perfect heirloom tomatoes but with a unique dressing that elevated it above typical Caprese salad. The main course was even better, had the fried chicken special, which was an Asian style chicken breast served that you wrapped in lettuce with a side sauce. It was so good I kept debating whether to use the also good sauce because I loved the flavour without it. I also truly enjoyed the fried squash, which was indescribably good. The sauce was almost a hollandaise and it included toasted pumpkin seeds that were incredible but did not taste like pumpkin seeds. A truly great lunch and Iโll be returning with friends (tomorrow).

Love the atmosphere, causal yet services were top notch. I love the selection of food and would love to return. My fav. Was the the Foie Gras Parfait and the Iceberg Wedge.

My family and I had a spectacular meal at Aloette. The service was top notch. The food was delicious. What they did with the Iceberg wedge topped with radish slices, roasted pine nuts and Parmesan cheese was amazing. The lemon meringue pie was the best. Very small place but comfortable. If youโre going to visit Toronto and want to have a French cuisine meal, go to Aloette.
Be the first to Replysmall, lively, delicious
small, lively and delicious. Friendly service, casual dress, bar seating and a handful of tables (won't be good for large parties). Nice looking place. Small food menu, all tapas style (small shareable portions), each was very good and I'd order again (photo worthy presentations). Full bar. Could stay for dinner or go early have a few things and then go to dinner.

Excellent service and a great โupmarketโ diner style Menu. Inventive dishes. Good wine list - including by the glass. Sat at the bar - great space for a couple.
Be the first to ReplyAloette - Overrated reviews can affect your expectations.
Unfortunately, this place is overrated. Various recipes are being tried, and I totally respect that. But what happens when the look and taste don't match in the same direction, and there is no harmonization? I will answer that in this review but let me start the first start with the good part. The restaurant and atmosphere are a lovely, clean washroom offering nice towels. Why do I mention that? Because your expectations are starting to rise at a first impression. Hand-made bread is adorable, and it is served before dinner. This place and the menu look so cozy and charming, and you get excited before you enter the restaurant. Even you can start thinking I will enjoy my night and dinner tonight. The welcoming lady was charming and kind. The service team (at least, that was what I observed) Aloette is trying to make something different and pleasant. I can understand the different types of menus offered recently, and fancy-looking menus are getting popular each day. Still, as long as there is no taste, it does not matter how it appears fancy and beautiful is not essential. I feel disappointed because I gave more importance to taste than visual presentation. What makes a restaurant successful, trustworthy, fancy, popular and preferable? The answer may vary based on personal expectations, experience and perception. Still, Aloette is quite away from my combination to call a restaurant 'I want to go for a second time.' You think you will eat a perfect hamburger (you checked the comments, and most people say so, then you may think it is good to prefer), but the hamburger you make at home is better (at least it is for me). I bow respectfully to the chefs who put forth their efforts to bring out this menu, but something needs to be added. The spirit or a happier kitchen team? The kitchen is available, so you can understand how much effort they put in, which is highly appreciated. It is not my business to mention it; however, you could also feel how the cooking crew looked stressed and tired if you could have a chance to observe them. This may be the dilemma or challenge of having a part of the open kitchen. I witnessed it because they were cooking in front of me. Management may consider something, not the crew! They are doing their best! But, if you put much effort into what you are doing, why are you not doing it soulfully and mindfully? I am asking this, Aloette. The result could be perfect and over-luscious. Overall, it was a good night, but we waited too long to make a reservation, which is why I explained my disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyKitchen exceeds overall experience
It's hard to imagine a full-service restaurant occupying the tiny space that Aloette fills, and indeed its greatest shortcoming is the room itself. The front of house staff are well trained and attentive and the kitchen is strong, delivering well executed and nicely plated, though expensive share plates (e.g., $45 for a beef short rib lettuce wrap). The wine list is weaker than expected. Unfortunately, the overall experience didn't meet expectations. The restaurant favours a boisterous crowd comfortable with an overly loud playlist which doesn't complement the menu or service, and worse detracts as the noise reverberates in the tiny space. Hard to recommend dinner service for anyone who values a more refined experience.
Be the first to ReplyWorst service Iโve ever had
Worst experience Iโve ever had at any restaurant, let alone a โMichelin recommendedโ restaurant. Walked in and was told I had to wait 1-1.5h so I did. Came back to check after over 1h but was only now told my seat isnโt guaranteed so go upstairs and have a drink aka spend money. Waited another 30minutes until they told me they had a seat at 10:15-30 ie. 3 hours of going hungry. Sympathetic but useless staff member who didnโt even offer to pay for a drink that I did not want. Was supposed to be a birthday treat but became a birthday disaster.

My husband and I had tried to get reservations on many occasions. We tried to do a walk in. All to no avail. Several weeks ago I was browsing online and made reservations. The confirmation came to me by text. I responded. All was grand! Tonight as we were headed out I noticed that the time was off on my calendar and I realized we reserved another, out of town, restaurant named Alo. We were45 minutes from home so my husband called the restaurant. They put us on the cancellation list and assured us all would work out. We got to the restaurant and they advised us that they could take us upstairs at the fancier restaurant at the bar. Upwe went. We settled in and ordered drinks when they texted us from downstairs that they had a table. My husband went down and was told to take our time, enjoy our drink and come down by 7:15. We finished up and went downstairs, choosing for the more casual meal as that was what we were intending to have. Once seated, we were told we had 45 MINUTES!!! You could see the staff rushing to not only get us in and out but several others. In fact the ladies beside us were upset that they were being pushed out. The food was nothing special and add to that, they kept trying to pull the dishes out from under us, we could not give the food the benefit of the doubt. When they threw the bill at us before we finished eating I inquired about dessert and they said they would be happy to provide it TO Go. I asked the manager, Ronnie, why they pulled us out of the upstairs restaurant to push us through in under 40 minutes? She said she thought she was doing us a favor. I donโt think I have eaten that quickly at McDonalds. I walked out after spending more than $200 wanting to throw up. The chef, Patrick Kris has been looking for acclaim from Michelin for a long time. He was awarded 1 star this past summer. I donโt understand how. His staff is anxious and unhappy, he treats customers like they should feel honored to eat his food. He needs to get his head out of his a## and realize that when you head out for a nice meal you want to take your time and enjoy. We are not cattle! I will never go near ANY OF HIS ESTABLISHMENTS AGAIN.
Be the first to ReplyTiny restaurant and small menu, but respectable food
This restaurant does not have a lot of seating and is compact. We sat in a booth, but space was still tight. There's not a lot of food options on the menu, but the food that we ordered was pretty tasty. The burger was good as well as the brussel sprouts. The dessert, however, the lemon meringue pie...was a bit tarte for our taste. We expected a bit more from this restaurant given the reviews, but maybe it was because the restaurant was near closing we didn't get the service and overall dining experience that we were hoping.
Be the first to ReplySurely the noisiest restaurant in Toronto.
We had to shout to carry a conversation. Sadly we won't be back. To be fair, the food is better than average, sometimes very good. The foie gras was nothing special, however. They need a better supplier. As well, the young man who served the meal was very pleasant although we had trouble hearing him. Nobody would miss it if they turned off the "music."
Be the first to ReplyCaters well for gluten free
Most of the menu could be gluten free! I had delicious trout along with such tasty squash - would recommend. We werenโt so keen at having to sit in a line along the bar with a draught from the door in this very cramped venue. The music was rather loud for us to hear each other too.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food
Food was very good. Ambience was very nice and the staff was extremely polite. Music was a bit loud for my taste. Would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyReally creative and delicious food
Outstanding food ..this is such a great resto. We dined there on shareable plates. We tried the scallops, stuffed wings, and the fav was the wedge salad, so crunchy and delicious. I wish I had the recipe. We ended with the lemon meringue pie, which was awesome. The service was friendly and professional.
We liked it so much, we stopped in at another of their locations in Liberty Village which only does Take out. Tried the Burger & Crunchy chicken sandwiches. Again, the best ever. I look forward to visiting TO again and will certainly be back.
Disappointing Aloette Burger and Fries.
We did pick up. Really disappointing aloette burger and fries - especially because there are so many rave reviews.
The burger was tasteless and dry and unseasoned.
The roasted broccoli was burnt (and cold) with no bagna cauda in sight...
The fries were cold, limp and dry.
Great spot in Toronto
Came to this place a few times. Last visit was with friends for dinner. Small, cozy restaurant with great atmosphere. Food is amazing (some dishes are prepared upstairs at ALO restaurant). Cant wait to come back!

Another business night on my own. This was an amazing find. Perfect for being by myself, a darkish kind of bar/restaurant. I fealt welcomed to dine at the bar. Had a terrific Thai peanut salad and tender and flavorful short ribs (see picture). I recommend both of these, they were fantastick served with cheesy toast. It was just the right amount, not too much. Drinks and service was perfect. Great small little french place with healthy options in a city full of not so health choices :-)

Enjoyed a fantastic lunch. Ice lettuce and beef & foie gras were particularly good. Service was excellent and they were welcoming and accommodating of us coming with an infant in a bassinet.
Small cosy restaurant which we would highly recommend
My Favourite In The City
Came here with a friend recently and the experience blew me away. Service was excellent, the food was outstanding. The fried chicken was epic. We sat at the bar and had ample space. The restaurant is great. Can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyBest Restaurant!
If I could give 6 stars I definitely would! Visited on February 6, 2020 and we were seated at the bar in front of the plating counter of the kitchen. Didn't see any finger licking or anything unsanitary (thankfully) and the staff were so attentive. Always filling up our cocktail glasses and sparkling water. I frequent alot of 4 and 5 star restaurants and this place is truly amazing! We had the Aloette Punch for 2 - phenomenal. For the salads, we shared the mushroom and the thai salads and they also were very unique in their flavours and well plated. I had the burger and fries which were soooooo good! And the fried chicken, which was ok (my friend liked the chicken more than I did). My favourite part about the whole meal was the mini Birthday Cake Sundae and it only cost $6! It was the perfect size after a perfect meal. It had pieces of sweet crispy waffles in it!
Thank you Aloette for an incredible first time experience.
Great Service
Enjoyable dinner at Aloette. The service was very attentive and the ambiance quite enjoyable. Food quite tasty......enjoyed the infamous burger and others had the pork belly and braised beef......all yummy. They accommodated the lobster roll order by providing 3 rather than the usual two. Mushroom salad very tasty. A few other wine by the glass options below $15 would be nice or a 1/2 litre would be a better option.
Be the first to ReplyReservations!!!!!!
We went here early for dinner on a Saturday (5 pm!) knowing they DO NOT take reservations. We were greeted at the door and told there was an hour wait! There was a table and two stools at the counter and no sign of anyone waiting. We asked about the two at the counter and were told " They're Reserved"! When I said " but you don't take reservations- check your website ( and many reviews that say Walk ins Welcome!) There is no vehicle to reserve, so what the heck! Make a decision and live with it. Any we ended up at Rudy. A GREAT burger for half the price.
