A truly unforgettable meal.
AltoVino's wine list and pastas are legendary, and they live up to the hype. I've never been a big fan of pappardelle with bolognese, but I ordered theirs because of everything I'd heard about it. I almost couldn't believe how delicious it was. It was so good that I'll never be able to go back without ordering it again. The wine was extraordinary as well, and AltoVino's manager Michael was a serious expert (we eavesdropped on him recommending wines to other tables because he was so fun to listen to!). The chocolate caramel budino was every bit as fantastic as the pasta and wine, and I can't stop thinking about that either. We're going back in a few weeks with friends!

Super nice cozy vibe, amazing pasta, good vibe, and all around great experience without having to break the bank. Would definitely recommend!

this review is quite overdue, but i went here with my boyfriend for valentine's day and had such a wonderful night! it was very cozy inside, and the seating is quite intimate which definitely set the mood for dinner that night. the staff were very attentive and engaging which made me feel more comfortable in a new setting such as this. i first ordered the mushroom truffle souffle served with crostini on the side. very fragrant and flavorful, i was glad that there was something on the side to act as a sort of palate cleanser. i also got the cappelletti; it was first time trying it, and it was an interesting experience since it involved a mix of textures and a sweet/salty combo. regardless, it was still delicious! although i was full, i still managed to have room for prawns, as i am quite a big fan of seafood :) i ended the night with a slice of a lemon tart, which was satisfying for me since i tend to be a sweets person. overall, i enjoyed my experience at altovino! i would love to go here again for dinner, and i hope to do so in the near future.

We were on the hunt for some great food, so I consulted the Michelin guide and stumbled upon this gem of a bistro. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! From the outside, it looks like your average corner joint in the residential area of Russian and Nob hill. But once you step inside, the cozy ambiance, intimate seating, and dim lighting transport you to a romantic hideaway. It's the perfect spot for a date night. The sommelier on staff was a real lifesaver when it came to wine pairings. I'm usually just picking the cheapest red, but they have a good selection at reasonable prices. We snagged a bottle for $60 and were not disappointed. Now let's talk about the star of the show: the food. TL;DR - I loved every bite of every dish. The menu is seasonal, so I'm not sure how often it changes, but rest assured, whatever you're getting will be great. The theme of every dish seemed to be a variety of tastes and textures that melt into a cohesive, amazing flavor. If you're looking for something tasty to start off, try the Ascolani. I would have never thought to deep fry an olive, but turns out, it's a great idea. Each bite is a trip through three different flavors. It starts off like biting into a mozzarella stick, but instead of cheese, you get the tangy, bitter taste of the olive. But it doesn't stop there because next you get the savory oxtail. Then it all blends together for a truly unique flavor. It's like a culinary rollercoaster for your taste buds!Next, we tried the Insalata Invernale off the antipasti menu. I had no clue what most of the ingredients were, but the table next to us got it, and it looked amazing. It was probably one of the best salads I've ever had. The balsamic dressing is subtle, but it amplifies the natural flavors of every piece of the plate. You run the gambit of tasting sweet, bitter, and savory while feeling soft, crunchy, and chewy. It's a symphony of flavors and textures that come together in perfect harmony. My entree was the Casoncelli. The pasta was filled with a veal shank and short rib at a ratio where all the flavors pop out and complement one another. Then the caramelized onion, cabbage, and caraway sit in the middle to add that variety of flavors and textures we had come to expect. It's so good that I'd give it a 10/10.Based on their reviews, we saw that the papardelle is what they're known for, so my girlfriend got that. And boy, oh boy, it did not disappoint. The bolognese is so tender and packed with flavor that it melts in your mouth.I'm not usually a dessert person, but I decided to go for it since everything else here was so great. We got the Affogato, and again, it did not disappoint. The espresso meets the ice cream to create a bitter and sweet combination at the perfect equilibrium temperature. It's the perfect way to end an unforgettable meal.In conclusion, if you're looking for a restaurant that will take your taste buds on a wild ride of flavors and textures, this is the place to go. From the friendly staff to the cozy ambiance and, of course, the delicious food, you won't be disappointed. Just don't blame me if you become a regular.
Be the first to ReplyI think, its the best "neighborhood restaurant" in the City.
Highly recommended.Food is outstanding and Service matches it.One inside: Owners are sweethearts.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a gem.
Hidden in a quiet block, low light, low volume, the environment was very pleasant. Honestly everything was fantastic, but I would give the crown to Pappardelle--the pasta was cooked just right to remain chewiness and the sauce was tangy (in a good way) with a strong note of tomato which I just loved too much. We ordered quite a few and nothing let us down, from appetizers to dessert. I'd come back for more :)

Be the first to ReplyHad a great date night here!Cozy local restaurant.
The servers were super nice and gave the best recommendations, especially for their wine list. The mushroom and truffle mousse was very fresh and savory. The server said it was like a veggie pate and he was spot on. The pastas were both solid as well. Panna cotta was also very good - not the best but still solid. I will definitely be coming back!
Be the first to ReplyWhat can I say this place was recommended by a friend.
This place was more than what we expected. We had an excellent server. Dean was amazing he knew the whole menu and had great recommendations. Everything we had was exquisite. We started off with what the scallops then we had a paste with salami I can't exactly remember but it was good. For primi we had spaghettoni and papperdelle and it exceeded our expectations. Thank you Dean for going above and beyond

We had reservations, not sure why they put us right next to the front door on a cold, windy night. I was going to ask them to move us to the back room, which has much better ambiance but the rest of my party didn't want to make a big deal. Food was good. I felt that we were being rushed while the restaurant was empty.

Finding rustic Italian makes for a great TGIF dinner and Altovino makes for the perfect neighborhood spot. ย I found this place on Resy and decided to give it a try. ย My friend and I came here and shared what I consider the classic Italian formula - olives, scallop crudo, citrus salad, caramelle pasta (the pasta is stuffed and looks like wrapped candy), black cod and chocolate caramel budino. ย Everything was great. The black cod and chocolate budino were just outstanding and are "must orders" when you come here. ย Service was good and I love the charming very old San Francisco vibe. With tax and tip, this was $80 per person - just great value these days. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful upscale neighborhood Italian spot.
The ย homemade pastas are amazing as is everything else on the menu.

It's hard to put into words the borderline out of body experience I had when I took a bite out of my pasta perfectly paired with the wine. My goodness it felt like a drug. Am I being a little extra? Maybe but the food and atmosphere surpasses any other. It has become a yearly pilgrimage for my girlfriend and I.

Was looking for an early Valentine place in SF that had outdoor dining and reservations available- this place had the best ratings so I was excited to try it out! They had a prix fixe Valentine's meal that we did not get- 95 and it came with one of each, but no vegetarian option on it. We got the olives and spumo to share for appetizers, and for pasta I got the squid ink seafood pasta and my wife had the beet caramelles, which were cute little packages. Both were fantastic! TONS of crab, lobster, caviar on mine- truly a luxurious dish. For dessert, we got the budino and the panna cotta- both excellent, too. A great neighborhood restaurant in Nob Hill, worth the drive from anywhere in the Bay Area!

lovelovelove! Came here with my girlies for an early valentines weekend dinner. Even though we were one of the only non-couples in the restaurant, the experience was throughly enjoyable. The waiters were very friendly and attending! The food also tastes really good, It was both light and flavorful and you can really taste the care that the chef puts into every dish. The pasta was really fresh and so was all the breads and meats. Would recommend for the next meal that you want to impress someone! Caution that it was kind of stuffy when we went, but that also means you can take off your jacket and show your cute outfit out to the world.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and food.
Loved the ambiance. We were seated at a private table making for the perfect date night. Highly recommend the pork shoulder. We would have enjoyed a cocktail selection before our wine but no bar.

Probably the best Italian I have had in the city!! I have gone multiple times and the quality is always great. The noodles are super fresh and the sauces are perfectly seasoned. Never a super long line, the ambiance is so cute, the service is great. The ideal San Francisco date night spot if you get there right at sunset!

So happy we experienced this fantastic restaurant! ย We were late getting New Year's Eve reservations and could not get into any of our favorite haunts. Took a chance and made a reservation after reading some of the positive reviews. We walked in and were greeted warmly and led to our table. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. The service was top notch and even though busy we were given 5 star attention. The wine list was impressive. The menu items, we had Bolognese and the lobster pasta, could not be any more delicious. We started the meal with a salad and one of the appetizer options. Both dishes blew our minds. We are planning to go back!
Be the first to ReplyThis place absolutely blew me away.
Our waiter Philip was phenomenal, and a consummate professional. He guided us through the menu with care, and was attentive throughout the meal. The pasta was superb and the pork shank fell off the bone. The entire experience left me wondering how the flavors the chef created were even possible. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThere is a lot to love about AltoVino.
We came in for my wife's birthday and from the second we walked in I knew I had made a very good decision! The restaurant has a great local-San-Francisco feel without being pretentious (very hard to do in my opinion). The food was amazing and it was very easy to share the appetizers and dessert family style. We had a hard time choosing our entrees because it all looked so great and it was! The wine list was also very impressive! Our server was funny and it all added up to a great night out. THANK YOU ALTOVINO!
