I have not eaten in a small restaurant that had this polished and fine a service in many years!! The food is also delicious - don't miss the crispy fried okra!! I would recommend this restaurant very highly!!.

Amma, the best Indian restaurant has closed. I'm hoping they will open us somewhere else but for now, they have vacated the space. Their food was my favorite. I live close by so I was there regularly. Before the pandemic, the place was packed every night. There was a nice ambiance, the wait staff was attentive and the food had a very balanced feel to it. Not too salty, or too oily or even too spicy. It kind of felt like home cooking to me. My favorite was the Chana Saag, spinach with chickpeas. I'm sort of a connoisseur with this dish and Amma was the best. It was always consistent and really hit the spot, especially on a cold winter night with some garlic naan. The beet root kafta was really unique as well. I'm mostly vegetarian so I can only speak for those dishes but they will be sorely missed. Besides the food, the owner and staff were always pleasant to interact with. Best wishes to all the staff! Amma will be missed.

Two lunch specials come with so much food! The servers are super friendly and took the time to explain and recommend items on the menu. The first dishes came out super quickly and we waited a bit longer for the main dishes. Definitely recommend the fried okra and salmon as well as the lamb curry. At first they gave us the wrong curry, but when we told them they quickly made us a new bowl and let us keep the wrong order. Everything was really delicious, and I always love Indian food so this restaurant is a definite go to!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, excellent service.
We were a group of 15. We tried a wide variety of food ranging from vegetarian to non vegetarian and including fish. Every single dish, dessert, tea and coffee were all very good. A hidden gem, a must try.

I was recommended Amma, and they did not disappoint. Food was soooo good. Appetizers - The beet cutlet was new to me, and I really liked it. It was like a pillow-soft mini donut. Fried okra was yummy. Not too dry, seasoned well, not dripping with oil. This was my first time seeing a bhel puri or chaat papri. They were both delightfully new combinations of sweet, savory, umami, and crunchy. Dunk or brush with the chutney for an even more intense burst of flavor! Entree highlights - The prawns were amazing! Heavily seasoned and lightly fried, yet I could taste the freshness of the prawns and get that full textured bite that I expected. The tandoori chicken was just how I like it - the white meat was juicy, the skin was crispy, and of course bursting with flavor. The salmon was fresh, definitely not overbaked as many restaurants are prone to do, and the accompaniments were delicious as well. Others - The other dishes were all very good as well, but I feel like the above 3 dishes shined a bit more. The curries were well seasoned but not salty and had a balanced creamy texture. The chicken dishes all had a good bite and weren't too dry. The naan was soft yet crispy on the bottom. I liked that the plating was fairly simple with just a few garnishes because the food really spoke well for itself.
Be the first to ReplyTried the Tasting menu for Lunch.
Most dishes were average. The best portions were the Mung chat & Beet kofta. The mustard Sea Bass (it's chilean) was good. The grilled lamb chop was pathetic - undercooked, tough & tasteless. The butter chicken was awful, the meat was overdone & stringy. Mulligatawny soup had no Mulliga(pepper) in it, just a plain insipid dal soup. Really surprised at quality of such basic non veg dishes at such a well rated & reviewed restaurant. Maybe just a bad 'chef' day.

I had always heard really great things about the food, however it didn't have much flavor. The chaat had way too much yogurt and not enough chutneys. Overall, disappointed in the food and hoping for a better experience if I ever go bacm
Be the first to ReplyOverall not very impressed with this place.
Considering this is located in a big city with many options for Indian food, I would have expected the food to be much better than it was. We ordered the trio of non-veg samosas to start which was good I suppose but honestly I think it's very hard to mess up samosas. The butter chicken was nothing special. Barely any spice in it and the chicken chunks were dry and flavorless. The portion sizes were small-barely enough to fill 2 people. We had to order white rice and naan separately on the side too which I'm not used to because normally it comes with the dish. The butter chicken was wayyyy overpriced for the quality and taste of the dish, like $20. Also the food took forever to come out and we were starving but that could have just been because the restaurant was busy. Overall, we were not satisfied with the food and ended up going somewhere after to eat something else so we would be full. Can't speak to the decoration or design of the restaurant because we had to sit outside since the inside tables were all filled up. Only positive about this place was the service. They were very kind and attentive and even brought us an extra appetizer on the house, perhaps because of the long wait in the kitchen.

When we came here it looked like we were one of the only tables, but the service was still pretty slow. We probably waited about 15 minutes for them to come back around and take our order. After that, they did bring us some fried beet kofta on the house which was actually quite tasty. I ordered the butter chicken which was a bit dry and not the most tender. I also did not realize until the check came that the rice was an additional charge not included with the entree, which seemed a bit tricky to me, as the overall price with rice was more than I would have been willing to pay.

Dishes were disappointing, service was slow, decor was outdated, old carpeting and stuffy and noisy. Staff slow and indifferent Biryani was dry and not the one we ordered. We were given a jackfruit and potato Biryani but ordered a vegetable Biryani. My husband discovered a pit and luckily did not bite completely into it, otherwise he would have broken a tooth. I ate a cinnamon stick by mistake! The eggplant dish was dry and stuffed potatoes were also dry. Staff was indifferent to our concerns and feedback. Owner was not onsite to report our concerns and dissatification with the food and service. The only good part of the meal was the wine. They really need to improve the quality of their dishes and the service and decor.

I was looking for an Indian restaurant to take my colleagues to. While I found many fancy Indian restaurants in Manhattan, their menus looked totally inauthentic. Then I came across Amma... I saw the Bon Appetit video on their website and knew that this would be excellent authentic Indian food.About 15 of us showed up for the dinner, and they accommodated us inside by pushing some tables together. I was delightfully surprised to see Anju Aunty, the restaurant owner from the Bon Appetit video, actually setting up the table and taking our orders. My friends trusted me with ordering the food, and I ordered a variety of appetizers and main items for them to try. They absolutely loved it! I consider myself quite picky when it comes to Indian food, and I can honestly say the food at Amma is delicious and reasonably priced. I especially loved the crispy spinach chaat and the dum aloo. After the main meal, we realized we were nearing the limit of our corporate dinner budget and asked for a receipt so we could see how much money we had left for desert. Anju aunty was so sweet that she gave us some deserts on the house. I was so moved by her generosity and her care for her customers' satisfaction. Both she and her husband are such nice people, and they have dedicated so much of themselves to this restaurant. If you want delicious, authentic, and reasonably priced Indian food in New York City served with the best hospitality, I would look no further than Amma.

20 year old restaurant on east midtown and will say their decor on the inside shows. Very old and the seats are pealing off. Overall wasn't a fan of the ambiance. As far as the food and drinks goes ordered shrimp and lamb for appetizers. The Goan shrimp had a very strong fishy taste and I really couldn't eat it so sent it back. The Lamb loin had a good flavor with masala so I was able to enjoy this (will say could do without the "onion basket" lol)For entree I got konkan shrimp. Overall too much masala and wouldn't order it again. Will need to give this spot a lower score due to its outdated decor and food not being that great.
