I've been to Aoi Kitchen about 3-4 times in the past 2 years, but every visit this place gets worse. Very first visit, i was BLOWN AWAY by how perfect crispy and flavorful their katsu/fried items were. From croquette to shrimp tempura to tonkatsu just heavenly!! But that is probably the only time i can compliment their food.I think Aoi is a cute place with friendly staff and they play cool lounge tunes but that's where all the positives end.I would not come back here again for food.I prefer Bar Moga. But hey, try for yourself.

A fantastic spot in the East Village that offers authentic Japanese food. I got the Pork Katsu Curry with miso soup and I swear I was transported right back to a JR station in Tokyo. The food was nice and hot, my katsu was crispy and flavorful too! The service was excellent and the decor and atmosphere were comforting. I would absolutely come back if I'm in the East Village and visiting the city.
Be the first to Replyfirst time trying omurice.
.the wait is around 30-40mins if more than 2 people.. the food is ok and I will return next time.

Small and cute eatery nestled in the East Village! I got the Katsu Sando and it did not disappoint! The bread was slightly toasted, plenty of meat, and the Egg Tartar sauce was creamy and delicious. Ordered for takeout and my food was ready on time - quick and easy service!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is my go to hidden gem.
The ambiance is dark and trendy, it transports you away from the city for a little bit. The music balances the look, the service is also super friendly. The food is simply well done. The flavors balanced each other, it's hard to stop eating. The chicken karage and the omurice are something else. Definitely stop by if you can and try this place out!

This was my first visit at Aoi Kitchen and I will DEFINITELY be back. The food here was very good and I can't believe I've been missing the ebi sando from from my life up until last weekend! The shrimp in the ebi sando was perfectly fried and the flavors really hit the spot. We also got the omurice tonkatsu set which was also very, very good. This was enough food to last us for two meals. The portions are decently sized.

Ordered the omurice meal set which comes with the omurice dish, some small dishes, miso soup, and small dessert. The egg on top is exactly what I expected, and the rice mixed with the sauce tastes great.-1 star for not having strawberry milk when we went.

Nice ambiance. Excellent service. Great menu selection
Be the first to ReplySuch a cute place with delicious authentic Japanese food
Such a cute place with delicious authentic Japanese food and great selection of sake. Our party of two reserved one of the three enclosed heated houses for outdoor dining. It's cozy and well decorated with flowers and retro art. My friend ordered the omurice set and I ordered the tonkatsu curry set, with a carafe of sparking sake. Will certainly be back!

It's a very chill and cozy vibe. Perfect to go right now during the winter months. This place will warm your bones.

I got the omurice set and loved it!! The sides were delicious, the omurice itself was amazing, and the restaurant decor was very vibey.

Cute ambiance and environment, pretty good food, good service.I got the Tonkatsu with curry, which was 3.5 or 4 out of 5. The rice, salad, miso soup were delicious. The curry was a smidge salty and the ends of the tonkatsu were a bit too hard (the meat was too thin). My friend got the tonkatsu sandwich which was delicious and 5/5. I wish I had gotten this instead. The chicken karrage (appetizer) was also good.I'd come back here again and get the tonkatsu sandwich!

Food was so good! Prices are not cheap (typical for Manhattan) but you get what you pay for. Three of us went to AOI for dinner and got: 3 appetizers, 3 rice dishes, and 3 drinks (beers not pictured). We finished all the food and we were definitely full after. Definitely check this place out for quality katsu rice dishes and omurice!!!
Be the first to ReplyIt was alright, was expecting more.
Maybe I'll go back to try something else on the menu. The mentaiko pasta presentation looks nice and taste is rich as expected from a creamy pasta. The spicy cod roe (the orange red stuff) gave a slight kick but it's probably not spicy at all those who live for the spice. It's great until after a few bites, I got overwhelmed and tired of the taste. It's a dish better to be shared with others. Wish they had something on the side to pair with the pasta as it was more expensive compared to elsewhere. No problem with the service. I do wish the lighting was brighter inside though I guess the darkness is suppose to be the vibe. There was a big group seated when I went who was rowdier than the music playing, just my luck.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Food and Service.
I've come here for an Anniversary, a Work Dinner, and a Casual Dinner, and all times were great! The Omurice is very well done and I usually switch the Demi-Glaze for the Curry. Call me childish but the best part about it is cutting it down the middle and seeing the egg ooze out. The Soba and Inari are also worth trying. I will be returning again!

Best omurice in NYC! Ordered the full set for the katsu omurice which came with side dishes and a small dessert. The eggs were so fluffy and moist with delicious demi glacé sauce. The sando was crispy and juicy; the katsu was cooked to perfection and it was savory. Overall great cozy atmosphere with dark lighting and limited seats. Make sure to make reservations before your visit. Highly recommended! Omurice tonkatsu teishoku Katsu Sando

Looked super cute and full of people from the outside so my sisters and I decided to give this place a try. The host was super nice and very accommodating. When the food came out it looked super delicious and I couldn't wait to try it. The first dish we got was the mushroom truffle it's was too salty and super over priced since it was 6 pieces of thinly sliced king mushrooms. The entrees were moderate. We thought that there was nothing special about the place and it was over priced compared to other restaurants by st marks. All in al, the employees there are nice but the food is okay. St marks has better food at a cheaper price.

Love the omurice here! I ordered it for delivery and the egg was still fluffy and moist, with delicious demi glace sauce and rice. The portion felt a little on the small side, so I'd probably order a side next time for a full meal. I would definitely come back! Given how great it was delivered, I'm sure it's worth a trip to eat it fresh in person.
Be the first to ReplySolid spot.
Ordered the truffle and nori fries, ebi curry, omurice, and mentaiko pasta. Loved the mentaiko pasta and the ebi curry the most. Truffle and nori fries had really nice flavor and were completely devoured by our table. Definitely want to come back to give the ebi sando a try and to reorder the mentaiko pasta. I saw some reviews mention the price point was high but I think it's absolutely reasonable for what it is and comparable to other japanese curry/omurice spots.

was so hungry and the food was so good that i totally forgot. the mentaiko pasta is so so good and i will be dreaming about it for a long time. the staff was also so friendly and nice. i ordered green tea (i love tea) and never saw the bottom of the cup and will definitely be coming back to this place
Be the first to ReplyI will never forget the shrimp katsu sandwich I had here.
It was my first time trying the like and since then nowhere else has matched the flavor and deliciousness of it. I don't even like shrimp but every single bite was heavenly. The sauce was what might've made the entire meal. I wish the portion had ONE MORE SANDWICH because this was more like a snack than a meal and also for the cost (16 bucks) it's almost too steep?! I mean it did taste like it had fallen out of heaven so I guess it justified the cost for a "try it once" thing but I don't think my wallet can handle this indulgence beyond that alas.
Be the first to ReplyA decent place for Japanese comfort food.
We ordered omelette rice set meals and katsu sandos. The omelette rice was a bit too creamy for me but it was still good. The katsu sando was better. A bit on the expensive side.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, lovely, low-key atmosphere.
Perfect for a chill date night!
Be the first to ReplyReally cramped, stressful place.
Felt rushed throughout; egg omelet came out cold.It is also freezing in here. Was really excited to finally get here, and very disappointed. Not sure if I'd try again.
