Authentic Chinese food from mid south China.
Stinky tofu is not really stinky though... Fish dishes are quite fresh. Recommend if you can tolerate spicy food
Be the first to ReplyI loved everything here.
Highly recommend family style. The tofu was flavored so well, as with the eggplant & chicken dish. Also loved the rice pudding with the eight delicacies! Perfect way to end off the meal. A little more upscale than your average Chinese restaurant so a little more pricy, but very clean and calm energy!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a place where you can keep visiting.
Delicious food! Really enjoyed the spicy wood ear and scallion pancakes. Definitely ordered more than I could eat so there were lots of left overs. Service was great. Not to loud - more of a quiet vibe. Enjoyed and would return for sure.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyed dinner at Atlas Kitchen on Thursday evening.
A place where you can return over and over to explore the large and distinct menu, which is likely filled with many gems.Quality: Atlas Kitchen has an authentic, but modern feel to it. The menu is extensive nearly everything sounded delicious. They have a section dedicated towards Americanized Chinese food, but much of the menu is inventive twists on unique items. We started with the Scallion Pancake, which was a nice crispy appetizer. Then we ordered two entrees, the Sautรฉed Eggplant W/ Salted Egg Yolk and the Sliced Eye Of Round Beef W/ Peppers & Peanuts. The Eggplant had a great texture, but it was extremely salty and desperately needed a sauce. The Round Beef was delicious, but be warned, even if you don't feel the heat immediately, it will catch up with you. Quantity: Large portions, each entree is big enough for two to share.Value: $7 for the Scallion Pancake. $18 for the Sautรฉed Eggplant W/ Salted Egg Yolk. $25 for the Sliced Eye Of Round Beef W/ Peppers & Peanuts.Ambiance: Atlas Kitchen is an upscale Chinese restaurant located on the Upper West Side. They have a sophisticated front dining area, and a more intimate and cozy room towards the back. We ended up in this back room, which had just a few tables in a narrow space. The artwork on the walls was simple, but beautiful, and instrumental music played quietly in the background.Crowd: Reservations recommended, but can be secured a day or two before.Service: Extremely kind, but not very helpful in providing recommendations on the extensive menu.Parking: Limited parking in the area.
Be the first to ReplyThey have a great atmosphere for a chill dinner.
The food is delicious and the portions are really big. They have a lot to choose from on the menu. The service was good and the food came out pretty quick. Great spot for a date!

I went here for the first time last week and picked up our order. The pork dumplings were excellent, the vegetable spring rolls were great and not greasy, and the two chicken dishes we had were also excellent. We will be back again.

Good in the beginning, but getting pricey shortly, and ignoring customers' requests like less oil or salt. Asked the stir fry vegetables to be non spicy (as shown in thr menu photo), but it turned out to be spicy still

The bar tender was superb and attentive. The food was flavorful and spicy. The drinks were good and smooth . The atmosphere was small and imitate.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food.
You won't find high quality Chinese food like this anywhere else above midtown. Very beautiful atmosphere with a nice back room for parties. Service was a little slow during peak Covid but has improved a lot since then.

A new contemporary Chinese restaurant near the University of Columbia, and its Chinese name is Mountains and Sea, which is a classic concept in Chinese culture. This place is modern and comfortable for a date or friend gathering.Fresh and Salted Pork with bamboo shoot soup is not authentic at all, I am so disappointed to order this soup, a traditional home soup in the east side of China. not recommend!!!!Sauteed sliced beef with fresh chili is good, the beef is very tender and the chili smells good. Better to have rice with this dish.Braised fish fillet with Chinese Sauerkraut is not good. The fish type is not right and the shape is too thick to have full flavor and the Sauerkraut does not have flavor.
Be the first to ReplyIt was okay.
The restaurant is really pretty in the inside and the menu has a large selection. The service wasn't great since they forgot about us and didn't bring us more water until the end, but the food was good (each plate was very large--you don't need that many plates for a group).

4.5 stars but not quite ready to kick it over to 5 on the Yelp system.Well, well, well. Who knew that tucked away in Cathedral Hill was one of the most interesting, authentic and NOT overrated upscale Chinese restaurants in the city? A place so down home with the homies that it serves not one but TWO dishes with frogs, not to mention plenty of innards like kidney? What to get? Everything but the photogenic thin-sliced pork belly app, which was too dry and rather flavorless without the garlic chili sauce (which was too watery anyway). The thin-fried stinky tofu, on the other hand, was a delight...except it was served with the same garlic chili sauce, and I really wish they'd served it with pickled vegetables and garlic soy sauce or something more traditional. But it was stinky, fermented and pungent, just the way I like it!The Steamed Fish Fillet with Tofu and Chopped Red Chili Sauce melted in our mouths. The Mapo Tofu was one of the better ones I've had. The Hunan Fried Rice was generously stuffed with vegetables. And the Braised Frogs with Chopped Red Chilis was an explosion of flavor, though the frog pieces were pretty bony.I'm surprised by the comments about bad service, as we had quick, attentive service throughout the meal. Granted, we came at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty empty. But I do need to give extra praise for the service: A member of our group was very picky, fussy, difficult, and ignorant about Chinese food (let's just say, I didn't choose for them to come). The server who took our order had the patience of an ox for dealing with her 10+ minutes of ignorant questions and insane demands. So thank you, kind server, for not treating us less after all that.

Be the first to ReplyAtlas Kitchen was a very good take on modern Chinese
Atlas Kitchen was a very good take on modern Chinese cuisine, albeit at slightly higher prices due to the more upscale setting. The organic cauliflower in dry wok flavored with sliced pork was DELICIOUS -- definitely the highlight of the meal. I also absolutely loved the stewed spare pork ribs with winter melon soup; a good soup like that really hits the spot in the winter. We were much less impressed by the braised pork belly with brown sauce -- the flavor profile was very one-dimensional (salty) and the texture was off in terms of toughness/chewiness. We spent about $40 each after tax/tip for lunch and left absolutely stuffed. Excellent service and ambience; will definitely be back when I want a modern Chinese treat!

Solid option for Chinese near Columbia! ย Although the prices seem high the value is there as I was able to get two meals out of the eggplant I ordered. ย Eggplant was well seasoned and caramelized nicely. ย Hot and sour soup was also solid and had a nice viscosity.
Be the first to ReplyPretty good spot.
It's fun to try upscale Chinese cuisine. However, the service here was awful. We stayed probably twice as long as would have (ordering took forever, and cleaning up our plates when we were finished took forever, and payment took even longer). The stir fry was my favorite!
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed the dough of the dumplings.
Tons of flavor. The pork and sauce was perfect for the crispy pork, sweet and sour. Will definitely be headed back.
Be the first to ReplyWhen the best part of the meal was how nice the interior
When the best part of the meal was how nice the interior decor and cutlery of the place is, you know the food and service were mediocre at best. We came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and the place wasn't very busy at the time but service was still quite slow. It took them a while to help us order and the food also came out pretty slowly. The three of us shared a ham and cabbage soup, spicy stir-fry pork belly with peppers, chicken in chili oil, and salt and pepper squid. The best thing we had was probably the soup- it had a deep and rich pork broth and was sooo comforting on a cold day. I know ham and cabbage soup doesn't sound so appetizing but Try it! The pork belly was a little over cooked, and the squid and chicken were pretty average. Portion sizes were decent. I honestly prefer Szechuan Garden a few minutes away for similar food. Overall the food wasn't bad but service could be a lot better.
Be the first to ReplyI booked a table for 5 for friends getting together.
When we arrive at the table, no server showed up to greet us and explain menu. Even when we finished deciding on the dishes, we struggled for a long time for someone to come help us order. But that's not the worst part. The server messed up with our drinks two times. The dishes were also disappointing . For the sliced pork belly, the sauce was not flavorful at all. The stinky tofu was fried for way too long, which makes it super hard to chew. We also ordered the sautรฉed frog with chili, not to mention it takes almost 1 and half hour for them to get this dish on our table, when it was finally there, the dish was cold!Overall, I'm so disappointed at the experience here. The service and the food do not meet my expectations at all. I don't know how it gets qualified for Michelin.

This review is solely for their seating policy, owner take note. Walked in at noon on a Saturday with plans to meet my parents. We've been coming here for years and the food is usually good. There was literally no one in the restaurant and was told I could wait for my party in the small seating area (basically a bench) where two others were sitting. Really? I understand in busy times requiring complete parties, but when there is NOT ONE customer in the restaurant? So offended by this I left and we ate at another place in the area. Would imagine you want to do everything to keep customers in this environment.
