Avant Garden is a special spot! It feels like an intimate experience. The restaurant is small and I encourage you to try to book at the Chef's Counter if you can. It's fun to watch the preparation take place. The meal is slow paced (your table will enjoy one shared plate at a time) and the service is top notch. Our meal was more than two hours long. When selecting what to order the staff were very helpful and their recommendations led me and my friend to order just the right amount of food. I am not vegan but I didn't think "I wish there was meat" for a second. Ordered: House made strawberry soda- ($10)- this was so so good and unique! After our meal we spoke with the chef and he mentioned that he flavors the fruit bases with herbs and spices. This one tasted complex and has star anise and cloves. This wasn't detectable but it made it very good. Artichoke toast- ($19)- this was my favorite thing that I tried! The base has a spinach and artichoke purée and on top was frisée salad dressed in truffle vinaigrette with jicama and cashews. There were also slivers of sweet red pepper and fried onions on top. The textures and flavors worked very well together. Scorched cauliflower- ($23)- the cauliflower was perfectly tender and had toasted garlic but I found it to be a little bland on its own. One criticism I have, the menu said it came over cauliflower purée and this was true, but this purée was strongly flavored with Calabrian chilies (which wasn't disclosed in advance) and this was too spicy for me and my friend. If you don't avoid the purée on the plate the dish is far from bland, but if you aren't a fan of this heat I wouldn't recommend this dish. I was able to enjoy small amounts of the purée but I just wish I had been warned. House made pasta- ($23)- if you like creamy mushroom pasta, this is a good dish for you to try! This was described as carbonara but I didn't really see the connection. It had some cooked down mushrooms in the sauce which I liked but it also had some raw cremini mushrooms on top which I could have done without. The dish could have used some more salt in my opinion. Paella- ($25)- lastly we tried the paella. I love all kinds of mushrooms (or so I thought!). This plate came with two meaty royal trumpet mushrooms and my friend and I really didn't like them. Neither of us could finish them. The flavor wasn't pleasant to me. The rice itself was cooked well and tasted like saffron. On top was a nice salad with thinly sliced onion, those delicious peppers from earlier and marcona almonds which felt fitting, given that paella is a Spanish dish. The plate was beautiful with dots of smoky red pepper purée and aioli on one side and the molded rice, salad topping and mushrooms on the other. Lava cake- ($19)- the price of this cake did feel a little high but it was a nice way to end the meal. It was served with vegan vanilla ice cream, blueberry compote and a caramelized banana. It was tasty! The presentation of the food at Avant Garden definitely stood out. These plates were carefully crafted and the intentionality led to a special presentation. Some of the dishes we tried missed the mark in some way but overall this was a special meal so I will leave the five star rating. The prices are high. This was not an inexpensive meal but it felt special so I would recommend it for a special occasion.
