Avant Garden is a hidden gem.
The waitress was so friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The kitchen bar seating is super fun because you see the cooks prepare everything. They are a bit shy don't expect them to start chatting with you. The wine selection is good. The Lucien Reymond Sancerre by the glass is very light and crisp. It pairs nicely with everything. My favorite dish was the Avocado. The textures and tastes were incredible. The sticky white rice with crispiness on the outside was so good. I'm not sure how they cook that, probably with some soy sauce glaze, sugar and oil but it's really nice! On top, was an avocado dome, with pickled carrot creamy paste dressing (on the avocado), topped with micro greens and crispy seaweed. The miso, soy sauce "dots" aka the sauce on the plate were very flavorful, and the peppers had a nice kick to them. The plating was really nice, and the flavors were excellent individually and together as one bite, with all the sauces/dressings. I also ordered 2 toasts: roasted beets and sunchoke. I preferred and recommend the sunchoke over the beet one. I enjoyed the way they cut the toast in little triangle slices that are easy to pick up and eat with your hands, or your fork and knife. Made easy to share as well. The beets toast was good but it's a bit earthy and the bread was softer through-and-through compared with the sunchoke, which is crispy on the outside (toasted) and soft on the inside 'layer' of the slide of bread (la mie du pain, as they describe in French). Sunchoke has pickled pear, which are quite unique and a bit crunchy. Adds some texture, with acidity from the olive purée (and the fact that the pear is pickled), pistachios (which I couldn't taste so much) and microgreens that supposedly were baby mint, but tasted nothing like mint. $17Roasted Beets had hummus, date, sumac, chickpea, cucumber tzatziki. The hummus and crispy chickpeas paired together well in terms of texture. The tzatziki added creaminess and the dates were very subtle. The cripsy chips on top were very good (a nice addition for texture). I couldn't really taste the acidity that usually comes with sumac. Good ingredients pairing but I think the hummus (chickpeas) and beets overpower the whole toast, making it soggier than wanted and a bit too un-wow-ing to the taster. Still good, but maybe not for $17 a toast. The restaurant is small and intimate. The ambiance is dark and not too loud (I actually wish the lights were a bit brighter so I could see the beautiful food and plating better). The staff is very friendly, especially the woman with bangs (sorry I don't know her name). It's a bit pricy, I have to say. For veggies, it is expensive, even though the restaurant and ingredients are elevated produce is fresh and good quality. I recommend sitting at the bar counter. It's a nice experience. Finally, I paid cash, and did notice that the waiter didn't make the cash adjustment, giving me back change for the total bill (it would be for a credit card). That's fine because I adjusted the tip amount, but it's a small detail that customers expect to not have to mention or be ignored when we're making an effort to pay cash to help the restaurant... I'd recommend and would go back, but it is pricey.

I am not a vegan but had one of the best meals of my life at Avant Garden. The food is so good and so well thought out that it transcends the label of vegan and is just great food! The ambience is mediocre and the staff forgot to offer us tea or coffee with our desert, but other that that, the waiters and buss people were great. Three of us shared 9 courses which included 2 desserts. The only food which was not excellent was the spaghetti dish which just didn't come out right. Every other course was a triumph.
Be the first to Replyan intimate and delicious experience.
the service was excellent, we were taken care of very well. the food was delicious - we had the beet toast, paella, and cauliflower dishes. each was insanely good, especially the latter two - full of flavor and a myriad of textures. i was an entranced, and will be back soon!

Rang in my birthday at this charming little vegan spot in east village, and loved every bit of it. The food, wine, and service were 10/10. I'll definitely be coming back.

Avant Garden is a special spot! It feels like an intimate experience. The restaurant is small and I encourage you to try to book at the Chef's Counter if you can. It's fun to watch the preparation take place. The meal is slow paced (your table will enjoy one shared plate at a time) and the service is top notch. Our meal was more than two hours long. When selecting what to order the staff were very helpful and their recommendations led me and my friend to order just the right amount of food. I am not vegan but I didn't think "I wish there was meat" for a second. Ordered: House made strawberry soda- ($10)- this was so so good and unique! After our meal we spoke with the chef and he mentioned that he flavors the fruit bases with herbs and spices. This one tasted complex and has star anise and cloves. This wasn't detectable but it made it very good. Artichoke toast- ($19)- this was my favorite thing that I tried! The base has a spinach and artichoke purée and on top was frisée salad dressed in truffle vinaigrette with jicama and cashews. There were also slivers of sweet red pepper and fried onions on top. The textures and flavors worked very well together. Scorched cauliflower- ($23)- the cauliflower was perfectly tender and had toasted garlic but I found it to be a little bland on its own. One criticism I have, the menu said it came over cauliflower purée and this was true, but this purée was strongly flavored with Calabrian chilies (which wasn't disclosed in advance) and this was too spicy for me and my friend. If you don't avoid the purée on the plate the dish is far from bland, but if you aren't a fan of this heat I wouldn't recommend this dish. I was able to enjoy small amounts of the purée but I just wish I had been warned. House made pasta- ($23)- if you like creamy mushroom pasta, this is a good dish for you to try! This was described as carbonara but I didn't really see the connection. It had some cooked down mushrooms in the sauce which I liked but it also had some raw cremini mushrooms on top which I could have done without. The dish could have used some more salt in my opinion. Paella- ($25)- lastly we tried the paella. I love all kinds of mushrooms (or so I thought!). This plate came with two meaty royal trumpet mushrooms and my friend and I really didn't like them. Neither of us could finish them. The flavor wasn't pleasant to me. The rice itself was cooked well and tasted like saffron. On top was a nice salad with thinly sliced onion, those delicious peppers from earlier and marcona almonds which felt fitting, given that paella is a Spanish dish. The plate was beautiful with dots of smoky red pepper purée and aioli on one side and the molded rice, salad topping and mushrooms on the other. Lava cake- ($19)- the price of this cake did feel a little high but it was a nice way to end the meal. It was served with vegan vanilla ice cream, blueberry compote and a caramelized banana. It was tasty! The presentation of the food at Avant Garden definitely stood out. These plates were carefully crafted and the intentionality led to a special presentation. Some of the dishes we tried missed the mark in some way but overall this was a special meal so I will leave the five star rating. The prices are high. This was not an inexpensive meal but it felt special so I would recommend it for a special occasion.

Phenomenal food and service! Our waitress was really attentive and paid attention to my nut/seed/avocado allergy and was able to recommend many excellent options. We got the sunchoke toast, brussel sprouts salad, paella, and scorched cauliflower. All were great, but our absolute favorite item was the sunchoke toast - amazing blend of flavors and textures! The dishes were surprisingly large for my party of 2 was comfortably full after the first 3 items (but still very much enjoyed the last one). Would definitely come again!

Solid vegan option if you are in NYC; Hen of the woods is possibly one of my top 3 vegan dishes ever. The service is always great here AND I enjoy the coziness of the location. It's just an intimate, date night type place and not for large parties.

For a Michelin starred restaurant this was a litttttle below expectations. The food was very good, but not quite worth the price. (Small plates do tend to feel like a scam in general.) We got the spaghetti, mushroom toast, and avocado with crispy rice -- no disappointments flavor-wise. The first thing I noticed upon entering though was the ventilation - the place has a greasy film feel to it, which I've read in other reviews as well. I thought it was being exaggerated, but it hits you immediately. I had to have my jacket cleaned after. Our server was great, very knowledgeable about everything on the menu, made recommendations top to bottom. This might've been a 3 star review if not for her. It wasn't by any means a bad meal, and I'd definitely recommend it (with a bit of caution) to anyone asking for vegan recommendations.

Amazing experience! All of the food was soooo tasty and delicious! The flavors were so different from anything we had ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDid not know vegan could be this good.
Cute and cozy little restaurant. Would recommend getting a reservation. Place is small and packs in quickly. Greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. The menu has a selection of small plates that are meant to be shared. We got 4 menu items and a dessert, walked out stuffed. What we ordered and what was actually delivered to the table blew my mind. If the server didn't tell us what the item was, just by looking at it, we would have never guessed. Just visual perfection. Then the flavors and textures.... how they pack such a punch in those small dishes is beyond me. Smoky, salty, umami, sweet, crunchy, chewy.... such a work of art. We loved all 4 dishes, but the paella and avacado were our favorite. As for beverages, they have natural wines and a few non-alcoholic choices. I have never heard of orange wine, but it seems like a popular option here. The hubs tried and liked. He said it was orange with some spice. I do not think the review did this place justice. You just need to go and experience it for yourself. Hands down recommend. Enjoy!!
Be the first to ReplyFood was absolutely amazing and so was the service.
I didn't try everything on the menu but the Cremini Toast was the BEST dish I had. Wasn't expecting toast to be so good but it was mind mind blowing!!!! We were told by our waiter to order two dishes per person since it's smaller portions which was the perfect amount. Will definitely be back especially for that toast !
Be the first to ReplyTried this place as a vegan fan.
Food was okay but not great. More impressive in its visual appeal of food and website than in the actual taste, flavor, or satisfaction. Mushrooms were uncooked and unseasoned in the pasta (just sliced and thrown in raw). The paella included a giant stalk of artichoke hearts that was impossible to eat. The mushroom was so tough that it could not be cut without extreme force. The beet toast was the best item. $110 for just two people with 4 'tapas' style items and a couple of drinks, even before including tip. I can eat better than that, even by NYC standards. Waiter never once asked "how was the food?"

I went for a friend's birthday and was excited to try it because of the good reviews. The wine/beer selection and portions were extremely small so make sure you order enough. The food was not bad but nothing I have to rave about. Right when I sat down the server insisted he pour me some sparking water and then charged us $10 for it without letting us know first. Tricky and sounds like a tacky way to up the bill...so I subtracted one star for that. Overall: -food and service was fine nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about-Ambience was nice and good for date nights

The toasts were good but overpriced and not as unique as you'd expect for a place that calls itself "avant garde". The hen of the woods was a mix of three different, equally bad tastes that clashed with each other in a cacophony of a dish. The service was a bit inattentive.

Amazing service, exceptional food, delicious wine. Wow. If you live in NYC and haven't been here then you are missing out!Their Valentine's Day menu was beyond expectations. Our server was exceptional as well!! Wish there were more Valentine's Day in the year so we could come back!
Be the first to ReplyDecent, but not worth the $160+ bill whatsoever.
I've been wanting to check this off my list forever, but was very disappointed and felt like it was overhyped. Nothing on the menu was inventive and the toasts especially fell flat. The outdoor dining setup was weird - no music, neighbor's conversations easily overheard + rats scurrying around the planters - and the food was bland and tired. I do not understand why this is a Michelin starred spot.
Be the first to ReplyFood was amazing.
It was honestly one of the best restaurants in the city. I'm not vegan and I was impressed by how delicious the food was.
Be the first to ReplyI would give them 4.
5 stars if I could. It's an expensive restaurant but perfect for a special occasion. Four of us sat down in their outdoor dining. We were the only ones in the space and it was well ventilated but also warm and romantically decorated. Also the service was quite fast on Monday night when the inside of the restaurant was packed. The man who showed us to our table, and came by a few times, was not outright rude, but had the curt attitude of not being in the mood "to deal with" customers. Our waitress on the other hand was very kind and attentive! We ordered the artichoke toast, Brussel sprouts, the avocado, paella, hen of the woods, house made spaghetti, scorched cauliflower, and the beet toast. Everything was beautifully plated and tasty--some dishes more than others! Particularly outstanding was the artichoke toast and the avocado with sticky rice, we ordered second rounds of both of them! The artichoke toast was refreshing and the bread was delicious. The avocado's creaminess paired well with the salty miso and crunchy fried sticky rice. I also enjoyed the pasta although it is more of a "typical" dish than the other dishes with more unique flavors. The four of us were very hungry when we arrived, it took about 8-9 of the tapas dishes for us to feel satisfied (some dishes run very small, like the hen of the woods for ex.) For dessert we ordered the lava cake and the almond cake. I enjoyed the almond cake, it wasn't too sweet, however other people at my table were not wildly impressed. As a chocolate lover I was very excited for the lava cake, but sadly it was slightly underwhelming as it was over cooked and a bit chewy (not gooey!)Overall Avant Garden is a great place to go if you're ready to spend some $$ and try a variety of high quality plant-focused dishes. The dishes are full of unique flavors and are plated beautifully.

I was in NYC for a quick visit and my friend recommended this place. Be aware that you'll need reservations. The restaurant is small and cozy. They have an outside dining area as well. The staff was very professional and hip! They explained the menu. The experience is that of fine dinning, small shareable plates. We had the Hen in the woods, Celery Root and the Spaghetti Alfredo. It was all delicious, they really delivered. We finished of with the chocolate lava cake This has been by far my best vegan experience. The menu offers a variety of complex dishes presented artfully. A must if you are in NYC!
Be the first to ReplyI have been vegetarian for 15 years.
This is best plant based food I have ever had. Every dish was incredible, then ended with the lava cake, which was equally tasty. I will be back over and over again. so glad we found this place.
Be the first to ReplySnooty and overpriced.
There were 4 of us, the waiter recommended that we order 8 items from the menu and share them all, but most of the dishes didn't lend themselves to sharing. Most were too small to split between four and we each barely tasted most of what we ordered. The food arrived sporadically with no rhyme or reason. Toward the end of the meal, when we thought we'd finished after waiting 10 minutes with no more food, we asked for the check. The waiter looked at us like we'd all grown an extra head. We had another dish in the queue, he said, some fancy carrots. Our mistake! Wonderful, I said, and when could we expect our carrots? "In 30 seconds," he said. He was off by a minute or so. The bill, including two glasses of wine, was more than $200. They *really* wanted us to have dessert, too, but I'm a little behind on utilities. Should have asked the waiter if they had a payment plan. Our stomachs had room. Left hungry. Walked over to Village Square for a slice. Disappointing from start to finish.
Be the first to ReplyI know I should be well past the point of saying "I can't
I know I should be well past the point of saying "I can't believe it's vegan!" by now, but nevertheless, that was still my first impression. Everything was well presented. They recommended splitting 4 dishes, but we opted for 3, plus dessert - we ate not too long before, so I suspect 4 dishes would be a proper recommendation if you were coming in truly hungry. We started with the Artichoke Toast and it was absolutely fantastic. All the ingredients were fresh, the sauce was so tasty, the toast a fantastic consistency.Next up was the House Made Spaghetti, it was easily the best vegan pasta dish I've had and one of the best pasta dishes I've had period. After that, we had the Roasted Carrot dish, it was my least favorite, but that's not to say it wasn't great. The way the carrots were cooked reminded me of plantains you'd get an African restaurant. It was an interesting and creative dish. The farro was especially delicious.Last, we had the almond cake, which was quite good - very creamy, which can be a little difficult to achieve in vegan desserts. We dined outside and they did a decent job decorating for one of those outdoor structures. Just be forewarned that if it's around freezing, the heat lamps are not quite adequate - you'll be keeping your jacket on, but I won't hold this against them. I'd rather be outside in these times and their interior is quite cramped. To put it simply, I love food that makes that just gets that dopamine flowing (dare I say, "O face"?") immediately, and this place absolutely delivered.
