Azurmendi is more than a stone's throw from Bilbao, about 25 euro cab ride one way, but the meal juxtaposed against the serene setting was definitely a worthwhile excursion. I'd recommend doing the lunch here so that you can enjoy the rolling hills outside the restaurant and the whole compound afterwards. I'd imagine you can only see the lights from the cars on the nearby highway at night otherwise. Don't worry about taking 5 hours away from your time in Bilbao, the restaurant will probably be the highlight of the stop anyway. Not to rehash the numerous reviews before, I won't belabor details. I felt the preambles to the meal proper were delightful, though the green house portion was more show than substance, and the small bites and seafood dishes of the main meal were the strongest component. A couple of the main protein dishes fell flat, but our disappointment soon gave way to sugar coma induced by the endless array of petit fours. On my visit, the diners looked to be mostly local, as a result most tables chose the adventure menu. We had the classic menu, which was fine as an introduction for first timers, but I wished they could have let us try both menus for the table.Service was faultless, as expected. The food itself bordered on sublime. Throw in the setting and you are talking meal of the year territory. The hype is justified, even if it just went sky high to #14 of World's top 50.
