😒 3/5 - What a disappointment

We frequented Babbo when Mario Bataly was still involved and always enjoyed the food and service. We decided to return for my stepdaughter's birthday. We arrived early for our 6:15 pm reservation and were seated right away. It took a while to get our drinks (no problem) and we ordered promptly when the waiter returned. Although the menu offered three courses, the four of us opted for an appetizer and entree only. Again, it took a while for the food to arrive but we had no problem with that. While the pasta selections were good, the veal Milanese was disappointing. Whenever I have ordered it in the past, it has been served on a bed of greens with a vinegary dressing to offset the richness of the chop. Mine appeared as a bare piece of fried meat on a white plate. Not even a piece of parsley as presentation. Very unappetizing. We then ordered dessert and coffee. As soon as the bill arrived (a hefty $600 with a generous tip), the captain came over and tried to remove our dessert plates. Since we were only half done and were still obviously eating , we waived him away and told him that we were not finished. He hovered by the table and literally three minutes later, looked pointedly at his watch and at us, and again tried to take away our desserts. Turns out it was 8:00 and they had obviously booked the table for a time inconsistent with the timing of service of the meals. When I commented to the captain that I thought he was being rude, he just said it was his job to "watch over the dining room." In retrospect, I wish we had taken our son-in-law's advice and ordered after dinner drinks to seek if the captain was going to bodily remove us from the table! As we were leaving the table, he said "Please come again." Fat chance!
