Awesome restaurant, their prices werent generous but was well worth every penny. Finished 2 bottles of wine among 2 people and gobbled down 5 different dishes. Definitely recommend. Escargot was a must.

Before you even think about going here, MAKE A RESERVATION.
We, of course did but many others in line were quite 1-2hrs for Brunch. Now to the good stuff... the hosts were very on top of their job--that was impressive! Juggling the floor and the constant clientele flowing in, and not losing their minds! We got sat immediately and landed a nice and quaint spot in the corner of the restaurant and our amazing server, Melissa greeted us immediately. Little did they know that this my husbands and my first year anniversary and even without knowing the service was TOP NOTCH. She had recommendations from drinks to ending with dessert and was extremely attentive despite the busy time we dined. The floor manager (blonde braided long hair--did not get her name) was absolutely amazing and when she found out it was our anniversary, she and our server brought us out 2 flutes on champagne to celebrate. Let's just say we left tipsy and happy--no driving involved. I enjoyed the duck confit hash and my husband really enjoyed the croque, not of which were absolutely delicious . The vibes of the place really brought us back to Paris and the food, including the fresh baked bread and hors d'oeuvre we partook in, the escargot--largest I've ever seen and just as tasty as any entree we had. If you're visiting or even local and haven't tried this place out...you're missing a Michelin experience of Paris in NYC!

We orderedBeet salad- this was just ok MUSSELS / FRIES- this was very good. ..This had a little dairy in it. I loved it. The mussels were perfectly cooked. ESCARGOT- the sauce had a little more lemon than I was used to. Still good. ONION SOUP- This was good. LE BALTHAZAR- this was nice and strong. I would've like my drink to come before my food... but it came like 10Minutes after our food arrived. Our server was nice, it took super long to get our check.
Service was ATROCIOUS. I Honestly won't go back because the service was so bad. They weren't even packed and we had to ask multiple times for multiple things. Like we didn't get a spoon with the French onion soup. Had to ask 3x and ask different people. Didn't bring our drinks, didn't take our order, didn't bring us other stuff we asked for. Very very disappointed considering the quality this restaurant is supposed to have. Food was flavorful. French onion was more dip like then soup like but tasty. Steak tartare was good (I've had better) and salad was flavorful. Still can't get over the service. That's why I'm giving 3 stars. if you want people to pay the price, get better service

As the website says, this is a "bustling, romantic brasserie that serves traditional French fare". The restaurant has a lovely ambience and lovely interior. Wait staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. I had the country pate as an appetizer. It was nicely done with perfect accompaniments. For the main course I had the pan seared halibut--perfectly prepared with complimentary sides. The martinis were perfect and don't neglect the interesting wine list. This restaurant is recommended by Michelin, and for good reason.
My go to whenever I am in the city. It is very loud inside. But the food as always never disappoints. Loved the squash risotto.
😒
We went with friends because of how famous this place is.
Our waitress was the most amazing thing at the restaurant. These food was just ok. I've had better steaks on a cruise ship. The mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had and the creme Brule was delicious. However, for the price, the food wasn't really up to par in my humble opinion.
PROS
Quality and quantity of food, position and awesomely priced lower vs other similar French boucheries in the city
Good service
CONS
Crowded, but reasonable
Recommended and highly suggested to book in advance: we got reasons why. Deserved

We went for my birthday dinner and the food was amazing! It was definitely a French bistro vibe, no music but the ambience is alright because the place the large and packed most of the time.

First of all the coffee here is amazing.
Paired the coffee with with an almond croissant and the sticky bun as there assorted pastries basket was unavailable. I really enjoyed the sticky bun, well made and moist. I was trying out the menu as I'm thinking of placing a catering order for a brunch event. Husband tried the Eggs Norwegian, it came with a side potatoes cooked with onions. He really enjoyed the flavors. The place was packed, but we still received excellent service. I took a star away as some of bakery items were not available.
🙂
Excellent and friendly service at the bar, where we ate.
Busy restaurant. More expensive than I would have liked (e.g. $14 for a beer). Food was excellent, although the portions are not generous. I will be back, but I would hesitate to come here all the time, because it is just a bit overpriced for what you get.

In a nutshell: It's the VIBE very few places in Manhattan have, the flavors are succulent, mostly and it's the warm friendly service that sets apart this French restaurant from others... came for a just a croissant and never left!BADNoise levels make it impossible for zoom conferences or any type of calls, for entrepreneurs and businesses people this is not a place to work from. That being said, it's a great place to invite clients or celebrate an accomplishment, since its the ambiance and menu which are this restaurant's forte. Balthazar open doors is both it's strength and weakness, in the sense that it's a mix bag when it comes to patrons. READ: If you want to avoid children don't come before dinner time BESTHaving tasted the majority of the menu at this point (since I'm Vegetarian/Vegan) and experience the service at all hours, you'll always leave here satisfied period. Now, since my advice is catered to the professional on the go, this is a great restaurant to enjoy a reliable menu with food and service that is constant. Mornings are better if you want to write notes, respond to emails and prepare schedules, if you don't want to be constantly disturbed is best you express your desires to the waiter before hand.Nights are just to enjoy and socialize, don't get fooled thinking the action is at the restaurant's bar surprisingly is at the dining room. Is very easy to strike a conversation or a smiling patron to compliment that designer thing you're wearing or whatever! the point is that the possibilities are here. Just be careful with those seemingly innocent drinks, so you can get yourself home and other than that, enjoy!

3.5/5Came here for an impromptu weekend brunch/lunch with some friends and my partner. There was a wait but it very reasonable compared to other locations. The host was really great. He continued to update us on our table and when the party at the table he planned to give us wasn't moving, he quickly pivoted and just gave us another table. Once we were seated, the waitress came right away with water and gave us the right amount of time to go over the menu and make our decisions. We ordered escargot for the table. This was one of the better orders of escargot that I've had and the sauce was really good to dip bread in. The bread was super soft with a solid crust. I just wished it was warm and the butter was whipped so it was easier to spread. I ordered the duck confit hash with scrambled eggs for my main dish. I didn't actually have a lot of duck meat in my hash now that I recall but I could definitely taste the flavor of duck throughout the dish. The eggs were nice and fluffy and the potatoes were good. The hash was combined with some greens which was different. Not my favorite but it did work. One thing that really made me dock some stars was the order of bacon we received. When you have $11 for an order of bacon, I would expect really good bacon. First off, they forgot the order so we had to ask for it. When it did come, they were beyond burnt. It was a little funny because the server even made a face when he looked at the bacon before putting it on our table. When we told the waitress about it, she asked if we wanted it "less burnt". I know there was probably a little bit of a language barrier there but at that point, we just didn't want to pay for the bacon. She immediately took it off the bill which was nice. My biggest issue was how that made it through all the quality control checks and made it to our table. How did someone in the kitchen look at that and think it was good to give to a customer? It was literally black and you could smell how burnt it was. Especially for such a place as this one, that should not have happened.

This place is an absolute hidden gem! From the outside you wouldn't think much of it. I decided to come here on a whim. I had some time to kill and pass by everyday before work. I'm a med student so I showed up in scrubs and my bulky text book. I ordered a glass of rose and the waitress came out with the glass I ordered and a glass of champagne. I tried to explain I didn't order that and she said it's complimentary, anyone dining alone gets a glass of champagne. I thought that was so sweet. The food was Devine and I definitely will be returning

I came here as a teenager 25 years ago and remember remarking at how impressed I was. Like any 16 year old, I was sassy and hard to please yet I remember loving this place! We were in the city from California and I remembered Balthazar's and wanted to go back! Had a reservation and got seated right away. I got the duck and holy shizzzzz I can't stop thinking about it. It was just delicious. I got the same dessert I got 25 years ago, the pavlova. I remembered it right away on my first bite. Lovedddd my meal!
😍
Went yesterday and I was extremely impressed.
I typically don't get French food too often, but if I ever were again... I'm coming right here. We started with a few dirty martinis, and they were smooth. Then we went with a dozen East Coast Oysters & they were super juicy and rich. We split a Duck Confetti and Moules Frites and both were so delectable. The Duck could of had a little more meat on it, but its Duck and it was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. The Mussels were excellent too (especially the sauce at the bottom... save that table bread for them). 5/5 stars no doubt about it... just be ready to spend a little more than a casual dinner

3.5I dined here for a belated birthday dinner. I opted to eat outside because that was all they had, but it was also very seasonable-- so that part worked out perfectly. Because I was eating outside I wasn't sure who to ask about where to sit and asked one of the employees outside, but he was rather dismissive and said ask inside and just went back to his conversation. I then spoke with the hostess inside who took us to our seat outside; however, I wanted the seat to my left so I could rest some things on top of a rest and she seemed to take issue with that and said she needed to inquire inside. I'm like what? What's the big deal and just took the seat, anyway. As we sat there for a bit, it took awhile for a server to come over. Finally after he did, I didn't want alcohol but my aunt ordered a drink, but I only wanted ginger ale-- she got her drink, but my ginger ale never came. We waited at least 20 minutes before they came to our dinner order-- we both weren't pleased by this. The food itself was good-- I went with the steak frites and spinach. My aunt thought the portion of mashed potatoes was small but she enjoyed. The crime brûlée was pretty good-- I did not really enjoy my dessert, the Apple Tartin.Overall, the food was good-- the service was horrid. Unfortunately, usually service overrides the food, in my opinion. I probably wouldn't return because I just felt they took way too long and never really checked on us and it wasn't the treatment I'd prefer when I'm spending my money.
🤮
If I could give zero stars I would.
Not worth the nasty treatment of customers. NASTY NASTY TREATMENT OF CUSTOMERSI waited 15 minutes for water while they brought water to others seated after me. 20 minutes later they completely messed up my order and all they wanted to do was offer me free alcohol. I don't drink. Spoke with the manager and he was the absolute nastiest. At this point, I just ask to pay and take my food (because they brought it all in a to-go bag when I was actually sitting there to eat) and I wait and wait to pay and finally leave my food and go. Manager was unapologetic and nasty. I would never eat here again. They aren't even that amazing. He would rather throw the food out than do right by the customer.Ruined my dinner and my day and he seemed pleased about it and told ME to leave. Seriously! You are absolutely are the worst!

It's a Keith McNally restaurant - so you know exactly what to expect: overpriced food and a consistent, basic crowd. It does boast a classic French style interior, makes a mean martini, and have unforgettable fries. I'm not sure what everyone's obsession with the French onion soup is here, I'd rather go to Cafe Luxembourg in the UWS (sorry Keith lol). The burger is also meh for burger standards in New York, but it won't be THAT disappointing; thus all of this amalgamating to a plain 3 stars. You can't really complain if you come here, you should know EXACTLY what to expect.

Service is always good, food is not too overpriced and you see creativity and technique in French food, steak frites au poivre has a better crust with the peppercorns on it than the regular steak, the duck confit which is used in French cuisine a lot is also very good. Eggs Benedict are also very yummy, and they also have strawberry champagne perfect for brunch. Raw bar oysters are amazing too.

My friend and I were able to walk in for breakfast on a Friday around 9:30 am, no reservations. The interior is beautiful, definitely a classy vibe with lots of well-dressed workers or even families (getting families to wear a button down on vacation! Wow.), it's a special place to have a meal. We mainly wanted to try the pastries but ordered the omelette w herbs and breakfast potatoes to have a savory bite. I enjoyed the omelette and potatoes much more than the pastries, honestly. Don't you love dishes with a ton of butter that you didn't see go into the dish? Blissful ignorance. I gotta start cooking my potatoes in more butter. The almond croissant was ok, pain au chocolat meh, sticky bun was nice, and I actually think their sugar donut was my favorite. Also, free sparking water!
🙂
Breakfast AND dinner!!!
Funnily enough we stopped by in the morning to have breakfast that was really good and the service is great! Lately during the day our friends told us that they have booked us for dinner in the same place: so we get to try the full menu in less than 12 hours!
A special mention to the Friday special: bouillabaisse (big portion) and again the service that was great but…the noise either at breakfast or dinner make for a difficult conversation!!!
Great place anyway no wonder has been here for donkey’s years.

We had an excellent meal at Balthazar.
We got a 9pm Friday night reservation about a month in advance but went early to grab a drink at the bar. The restaurant was crowded but the bar tenders were attentive to everyone waiting. We were seated at our reservation time. Our table was towards the back of the restaurant and shared a booth with the tables on either side. My ONLY complaint about Balthazar was the tables were so close together I couldn't even squeeze through the space between my table and the table next to me. Food was great. We started with escargot and then split the risotto (my favorite) and steak frites. We finished off with the warm chocolate cake which was also good but I could've done without it. Overall, was a very good experience and I would definitely come back.

Tried here on Friday morning.
We were a little late for our 9:30am reservation but there seemed to be ample seating. We ordered the brioche French toast and the Gruyère cheese omelette with home fries. Our server was nice, but failed to check on us. I had to ask 3 different servers to bring us ketchup and didn't get it until we were done with our meal. Food was ok- not super memorable or amazing- but average. Won't be back as there are so many other places to try in NYC!
🙂
it's touristy but the food and service are good and solid.
the best part is the space-though it is quite big, it's true french bistro design and ambiance. bar is tight but nice. go early or late for a better experience.

Amazing atmosphere, food and service.
I had fresh oysters to die for. The French onion soup is a most! The steak was also good. It's a most restaurant if visiting NYC. Make rsvp. It's always packed any time any day

Amazing experience here! The place is beautifully set up and the service was magnificent. Our waitress Juiletta went above and beyond in explaining the wines and food on the menu. She was kind and personable. When my burger first came out it was undercooked and without hesitation she took it back and it was corrected immediately. I would 100% come back here and if you're around that area I would definitely recommend. Xx

Bad service: Server Spencer waited on us for brunch and the experience went south. He was too slow and I had to ask other staff for service. Even though the food was great and well maintained from when Balthazar opened years ago, the deal breaker was really the bad service. And the finale to the mediocre "luxury" experience --- they gave me a Sharpie marker to sign my expensive check! Spenser said that I should bring it up to management since it's the "owner's idea". REALLY?! One signs and pays an expensive check... and uses a cheap Sharpie marker?!

Had an amazing experience start to finish.
The food was prepared timely and delicious, the server was attentive and knowledgeable, I am absolutely impressed. Definitely coming back here

Since it was opened in 1997 this place has never stopped attracting a beautiful crowd while the menu basically has not changed. I like to come here for brunch. 4 stars for the service. Either because they are always busy or it's just a unapproachable personality of staff they don't feel friendly. Food is good as always!

Balthazar is a classic New York restaurant, well known and respected by wealthy, white New Yorkers. I have been fantasizing of eating there for over ten years and finally found the right company to enjoy it! It has been open since 1997, survived the pandemic and the food is delicious! I ordered half dozen east coast oysters, the duck confit and a Shirley temple. Yummy bread and butter were served for free. The duck confit sauce was deeply flavorful, the meat crispy on the outside, succulent within, on the bone. Vaccination cards were checked upon entry and service was impeccable.

From January (actually December, which is when I started to come) until today, it is the service, ambience and taste that makes Balthazar MY spot Coming for breakfast, lunch or dinner you can't help yourself to enjoy yourself in this SoHo french venue. A shout out to maitre'd Suer & Sydney and servers Giorgios, Giorgia, Stacey and (I'm the colorful gentleman with Brooklyn accent that typically waits outdoors), they always make my experience memorable. Thank you.

I've tried hard to become a connoisseur of seafood towers over the past 15 years and I'd like to think I've seen and sampled many of the finest. Balthazar surpassed all others! Not just in sheer size, a triple decker tower, rare for sure, but also in height, quantity and most importantly quality. I would go back in a heartbeat to eating this delicious seafood on the sidewalk on a warm day. Great staff too and solid wine list. After all you have to have something to wash down all those delicious sea creatures

I recently came here on a Thursday evening and had a great experience. As I walked into the restaurant and was greeted by the team handling reservations, I realized I accidentally booked an outdoor table. This normally wouldn't have mattered, but it was absolutely freezing outside, so I asked the host if they could move my party inside. With no hesitation at all, she was able to accomodate, which kicked the entire experience off even better than expected. After we were sat, we were greeted by several people - a woman who offered to take our coats to the coat room, a server who offered bread and water, and yet another server who asked for our drink orders. Needless to say, this attention to service was maintained throughout the entire meal. For drinks, we had the honey old fashioned and the aperol spritz, and both were excellent. After seeing several tables next to us with too much food, we decided to omit an appetizer and go straight to our entrees. We decided to share the moules frites and the steak frites. Both were absolutely delicious, and it was clear why these were the dishes so many had recommended. Throughout the meal, I also really enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere, which truly transported me to memories I had from visiting Paris a few years ago. After we finished our food, I decided to order the chocolate mousse as the dessert. I'm not normally a dessert person, but I couldn't resist after seeing so many other parties around us end their meals with something sweet. The chocolate mousse hit the spot! It was small but perfect to share. All in all, the entire night was fantastic and I'd highly recommend checking out this NYC staple if you haven't yet! Already looking forward to my next visit.

We went with friends because it’s their favorite restaurant a block from their apartment. We don’t recommend it. The service was very slow and inattentive. We ordered a country pâté but shouldn’t have because we don’t like coarse pâté which, of course, it was. For our main, we shared the mushroom ravioli which was light and good. We tasted our friends’ French fries and they were crisp enough. The lunch was about re-connecting with friends and not about the food anyway.
We went for breakfast and it was great. The tables are very close together but this was not really a bother. We shared a few pastries and then had the waffles and a cheeseburger, both of which did not disappoint.

This is the perfect bistro. Great simple food prepared to perfection, a great atmosphere and a very interesting wine list. Great pate de campagne, great steak tartare and an excellent crème brûlée. The French fries are to die for.

Fun, buzzing, classic brasserie/restaurant in Soho
We dined here for dinner on our last night in New York and ended the holiday with a bang. The décor is old-school, classic brasserie and whilst the tables are very close together, the restaurant is beautiful and there is a great, happy atmosphere. The menu has french classics, such as steak tartare, snails and moules frites, as well as more modern dishes and crowd pleasers, such hamachi crudo, burgers and steak frites. The Hamachi crudo is incredibly flavourful and despite its small appearance, it is definitely not style over substance. The pork chop and halibut mains were delicious and portions were generous. The desserts, apple tarte tatin and tart of the day, were fantastic with excellent pastry and ice cream. Cocktail and wine lists were also superb. Unlike the rest of New York, and most of the service industry in general at the moment, the restaurant did not feel understaffed - our waitress was kind and attentive throughout the entire evening. Recommend for a fun, tasty, classic dinner that will no doubt impress.
great restaurant that we happened to come across, it was packed with a great atmosphere and the food was delicious!

Do not come here. Exceedingly slow service, 20 minute wait for drinks, wrong order arrives after waiting 1 hour 30 minutes for a main course, then another 20 minute wait for the cheque. Felt ignored by the staff for most of the meal. Honestly one of the most overpriced and underwhelming meals of my life. Don’t waste your money, don’t bother going here, it’s always fully booked and I have no idea why, it’s average food, underwhelming portion sizes, and full of little children yelling. Don’t bother !!!
Balthazar, what happened to you? I was here for breakfast at 10am this past Friday. The service was horrible. The restaurant was not crowded, yet the server took forever to take our order. Then our eggs came out overcooked and cold, like they had been sitting in the kitchen all morning. And on top of that, our monkey bread never came out. The server didn’t check on us. I finally flagged them down and they were completely clueless. They went to ask about the monkey bread, then came back and said it was sold out because it was so late in the day. Uh, it was 10am…. So they suggested the cinnamon bun instead but it was very mediocre. It also cost less, but the server did not adjust my bill. The lack of attention was beyond irritating. Not at all what one would expect at a Michelin star restaurant. Balthazar, what happened to you??
🤮
Service and Food Are Terrible
The service is terrible, almost nonexistent, on a weekday at 9 a.m. yet they had staff everywhere, talking to each other. My brunch was truly mediocre. Had to get up and ask for the check because no one ever returned after bringing us our food. Ridiculously overpriced. Don't bother.
