Always find a way to accommodate us.
This level of service of has consistently been top. Even when there's no room, if you're patient and kind, they find a way. Food is your typical bistro fare, ambiance is always thriving in the best way, service always on point. They want you to enjoy yourself. You can see it's important to them and we see that and feel that. An institution. You've been great to us always Balthazar.

It is simply the best in service, ambiance, food, and history of Soho. Love this place.

Fleur de pedesclsux 2014 ( a delicious pauillac decanted of course)... terrine de fois gras.... Steak frites... Bibb salad..: Great restaurant
Be the first to ReplyThe vibe and service is really great.
The food is good, and you won't regret going. The French Onion soup was a little on the salty side. In fact everything was heavy on the salt. If I were to go there again I'd ask for no salt.
Be the first to ReplySheer delight from start to finish.
We snagged a lunch reservation here to go with a friend after a morning of galavanting around some old haunts to celebrate a major marriage milestone. Balthazar was the perfect place to duck into to escape the rain. The ambience is just how a French bistro should be: buzzing, charming, and sexy. Our table was at the end of a center row right by the seafood station, and it was snug but with a nice view of all The Important People. So much botox abounded! The apricot sour is A+. We all just shared dishes starting with half a dozen wonderfully fresh oysters, and it never ceases to warm our hearts watching our six year old slurp one and then put the shell back down, correctly!, on the ice. Appetizer joy! The bibb salad is incredible: fresh leaves layered with a tangy and oniony vinaigrette that wets the beak perfectly. The fruit salad our kiddo insisted on is a joke price-wise, but at least nothing was slimy or mealy. For mains, it was steak frites, of course, mushroom ravioli, and a croquet madame. Listen, is this the best plate of steak and fries that you've ever had in your life? We'll spare you the suspense: no it is not. But is the meat not tough and cooked to the right temp? Yes. Are the fries good? Yes. If you're expecting fireworks, you'll be disappointed, so be happy with the decent plate of food in front of you and count your blessings that you get to eat in this NYC establishment. The ravioli was nice, very mushroom-forward, so no complaints, but again, you can't have the same expectations as some of the elite pasta places. The croquet madame, though, that was on the level of ones that we've had at places like Tartine and even in France. Divine--great bread, ideal ratios...just so, so good. For dessert, we all shared the berry pavlova (to have something "light") and the meringue was as it should be, with a nice zippy sauce and fruit, so what more can you ask for after a big meal? Service is fast and furious, but you get what you need. The bill is insane, but we were expecting it and we were buzzed and happy, so...so what? Four happy stars. A classic NYC meal to cheers to ten years. Will we be back? Maybe, maybe not, but we're certainly glad that we came.
Be the first to ReplyBalthazar is a trendy NY restaurant that celebrities go to.
In the popular 90s show "Sex and the City" they modeled a restaurant after Balthazar in one of their episodes but called it Balzac instead. It's hard to get a reservation here which was featured in the episode. I had to make my reservation a month in advance, and I was able to snag a 5pm table. A-list celebs like the Kardashians, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Anna Wintour etc. have all dined here. They also supposedly banned James Conden from the restaurant haha. Service was excellent from the moment we walked through the door. Their host and servers were all nice and friendly. They serve bread and butter upon seating. I ordered Steak Frites and a glass of wine and both were perfection. My cousin ordered the Porcini Risotto, and he liked his food as well. It was such an enjoyable meal and definitely lived up to the hype. I'm so glad we got to dine here, when we were planning our NY trip Balthazar was at the top of our list of places to visit. If you get the chance, try them out when you're in NYC.

I came here with a friend recently on a rainy weekend for lunch. We were told it would be an hour+ wait to get inside seating, so we opted for the much more available outdoor seating. There are tents and some heaters, but definitely still some draft cause the tent flaps are left open. Not super ideal. We got the steak tartar as an appetizer, and it was ok. Definitely over-seasoned with mustard and horseradish, to the point where the actual beef flavor itself was mostly hidden away. I got the chicken paillard. Again, it was just ok. The sauce didn't bind well to the chicken, so the chicken felt under-seasoned. The chicken was cooked well overall and was quite juicy and tender, but at times, it almost felt a bit on the rarey side, with a snap and crunch to it that I don't expect from my chicken. The best part of this dish was honestly the caramelized tomatoes. Provided a super sweet juicy pop. Service was fairly average; it took us quite a while to get served + to get our check. Given that it's certainly not cheap, probably won't be back again!

Have been here many, many times over the years without a reservation and the food was always great. Went today after 5pm as a walk in for two....hostess said no tables available. There were visibly about 8 to 10 tables empty. I understand people have reservations but why are NYC restaurants becoming this ridiculous, hard to get thing lately? There is so much competition in that area, why turn people away? We went somewhere else and had a really good burger. It's not just you Balthazar, it's everywhere, but it creates this hype that real NYers don't buy. Why are you putting people outside in a hut when there are empty tables inside? How long do you hold a table if a reservation is late? Was everyone on the late train this evening? There is zero wiggle room for an accomodation. Next time I won't attempt to walk in but will instead walk on to the next one.
Be the first to ReplyGood spot to grab a light breakfast.
I had the croissant and little solider and my beau had tartine. Nice, chill vibe.
Be the first to ReplyBalthazar is a solid French establishment in Soho.
The martinis are top-notch, and the wine list extensive. The beef tartare was some of the best I've ever had, and the tuna crudo was flavorful but a rather small portion. The roasted chicken breast was truly out of this world, but you can't go wrong with the steak frites either. You must ask for a side of Dijon for the fries-- it is incredibly flavorful. Our waitress was attentive and I enjoyed her quirky personality. We sat outside, and the outdoor dining shed was well constructed with lamps, heaters, and curtains.A must-visit!

Out of all the French places this is really not worth it especially if you want to make a reservation because they charge $40 per person. If you don't show up.
Be the first to ReplyFood & service was a 10/10.
We tried a little bit of everything & enjoyed it all! The escargot was decadent & melted in your mouth! Blaine was attentive & helpful when we asked about dishes. We ended our meal with the blood orange dessert & we're amazed with how great they tasted.

The food was good but it was very loud and busy around lunchtime. Service was on the slower side and the tables were very close together. But I would definitely come back for some steak tartare and some steak frits.

It almost never happens but my twin, brother in law and I walked in at noon and got a table for lunch. It was a birthday celebration so it was extra special for us. I had the porchetta sandwich, onion soup and nicoise salad. Excellent service and quality of food.

I went in a bit skeptical of such an iconic restaurant with so much hype, but Balthazar lived up to its reputation in all aspects. The food was divine, the atmosphere was excellent with great natural light and the service was top notch (especially the girls at the door, so sweet). Do not even think of walking in, reservations are essential. The place is an absolute controlled zoo for weekend brunch but a fun zoo. Your table is everything here so be very kind to the door staff! Good luck.
Be the first to ReplyNew York fan favorite for sure.
What stands out most for me is how much this is a New York take on a French Brasserie. Balthazar doesn't try to teleport you to Paris. And imho it shouldn't. You're in New York after all. Incredibly lively atmosphere and classic brasserie menu. Excellent service. But food itself was mid. Go for the fun.

After making a reservation a few weeks in advance, my party and I dined at this establishment on a Thursday evening at 5:30pm. The service was exceptional and the ambiance was inviting, making for a great dining experience overall. The background music complemented the cozy and inviting atmosphere perfectly. While the appetizers, particularly the French onion soup, were slightly underwhelming, the main dishes were truly outstanding leaving us thoroughly impressed. One area of improvement could be the table arrangement, as the tables were placed quite close together. Our table was only a fist's distance away from the table next to us, which somewhat compromised our privacy during the meal. While the appetizers could be improved and the table arrangement could be adjusted, these minor issues did not detract from an overall enjoyable dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyHad brunch and dinner here several times.
Dinners are ok-ish, brunch though is not worth it. Food is mediocre, it's too loud, too hectic and not enjoyable. I mean it's how to mess up eggs but somehow Balthazar cant have it right. Great crowd thats for sure. Not going back though.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance is if a busy fancy French restaurant.
Our table for two was so close to the other tables it was basically as if we were at a table of 6. I had to move the table everytime to get out of the booth. Despite that though, the service was very attentive (I drink a lot of water and it was refilled within minutes). The duck confit was packed with incredible sweet and salty flavors. There was some sort of jam on top that paired perfectly with the tender duck.
