Balthazar New York Reviews from The Last Year
I recently had brunch at Balthazar and it was a delightful
I recently had brunch at Balthazar and it was a delightful experience. The traditional French fare was authentic and delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, even though the place was bustling with activity. The busy atmosphere added to the charm and made for a lively brunch experience. Highly recommend for a taste of classic French cuisine! Try brunch at Balthazar!
Balthazar is fantastic.
The cozy, welcoming atmosphere makes you feel right at home. The food is absolutely delicious, with every dish expertly crafted and full of flavor. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive, ensuring you have everything you need for a great meal. Special shoutout to Yorgos , the bartender--he's super cool and makes amazing cocktails. Overall, Balthazar offers great food, excellent service, and a friendly vibe. Highly recommended!
Great place.
What a great restaurant! Atmosphere, service and food were all 1st rate and, even though on the loud side, you could easily have a conversation with your table or the one next to you. A very comfortable environment.
Decent brunch
Perfectly decent brunch. Both had the Eggs Norwegian, tasty but nothing special. Solid 7.5/10. Service was very good. Would return but not prioritise coming back

Gotta go!
We were on a last minute trip and tried to make reservations on Thursday afternoon for a Friday dinner. We had hoped that for 2 people it may be possible. We weren't interested in the 5:00 pm seating so we made a reservation for lunch. We were seated in the corner with an amazing view of the entire restaurant! They were packed and we felt very fortunate to get the table that we did. The wine was a recommendation from our waitress and it was delicious. The bread was delicious. I'm not a seafood lover, so I ordered the Chicken Paillard. I'd pick something else next time. My husband had the King Salmon and thought it was fantastic. I asked for a chocolate dessert recommendation from the waitress (should have asked for an entree rec) and she recommended the Profiterole...to die for! My husband had the apple something and thought it was delicious. The experience of the restaurant was delightful. The people watching was entertaining. My husband had eaten here before and wanted to share it with me. I would recommend it. It wasn't cheap, lunch for 2 was $200 plus, but a treat.
Delicious lunch
I absolutely loved this restaurant!! Great food, amazing wine, delicious desserts and perfect atmosphere!!! 100% recommended
This Balthazar restaurant has an amazing vibe and is busy.
We luckily got seated immediately, and had two glasses of white wine and shares the Grilled French Ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich which is served with an amazing salad. The food was delicious, and the salad delightful. I loved the light dressing. We enjoyed dessert as well, and it was Profiteroles, like a cream puff but lighter, with a chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. All their desserts look great so it was hard to choose.
Memorable Evening
Was there for an anniversary dinner and it was better than expected. Table ready when we arrived. Service impeccable. Food so good that we will have lifetime memories of most of the dishes. Fun and exciting atmosphere. Can't wait to go again next time we're in NYC.
This place is great.
Lowkey have always wanted to try it but didn't want to look like a tourist, so having my sister was in town was the perfect excuse to pop in for brunch. The outside seating is possibly the best spot in nyc to people watch. Good food, gotta come back and try some steak frites for dinner (James cordon could never lmao)
Super yummy Free bread Service that was almost TOO good
Super yummy Free bread Service that was almost TOO good Busy inside Steak and escargot was just okay for the price. The snails were huge though. The Diet Coke was horrible though and it's in a tiny glass full of ice with no refills so steer clear
Like having breakfast in Paris
Went for breakfast before heading to Brooklyn to walk around. This gave us the energy to get through the day. The food was amazing and the restaurant has that Paris charm we were expecting. The pastry basket is a must. This way you get to try a bit of everything. We plan to try it for dinner next time.
Birthday celebration
This place was booked for us, for a birthday celebration. We sat outside in the containers meaning we could watch the world go by whilst not being impacted by the rain (torrential rain). Inside was very noisy, too noisy for us. I ordered a shrimp cocktail which was king prawns on ice and a tomato sauce. A separate plate of lettuce was delivered; a deconstructed shrimp cocktail, I thought, but no. An error with the ordering. The snails were delicious. Mains included duck and a cassoulet, both very good and we finished off with dessert. Good food, very expensive however. The service was outstanding, couldn’t fault it. Our next stop is London so we will likely visit there.

Mac and cheese was good yellowtail crisp could be sliced thinner. My wine cold be colder Overall ok
Midweek lunch
Had a pleasant midweek lunch. Sat on outside table with no need for a reservation. Pleasant and attentive service. Good food.
a NYC classic restaurant.
it's a staple but not super tourist-y or overhyped, in my opinion. the inside is truly beautiful but it's rather busy all the time so i'd recommend a reservation or just grabbing a seat at the bar. the staff is wonderful! they are very kind and nice to talk to. the food is also always delicious. everything they do here, they do very, very well. can't go wrong!
Walked in with a party of two.
The place is packed. If you can, make a reservation but we were luckily accommodated immediately. It may have just been because it was the week of a heat wave, but the restaurant was pretty warm the best relief we got was when we headed to the basement for the restroom. Our server was super friendly. Service was efficient. The complimentary bread was good, wish they had better, salted butter though. I ordered the moules frites. Very generous portion and very tasty. The fries were scrumptious. Pavlova was good too. I ordered the peach daiquiri as a drink (it's not frozen) and that was delicious. Really enjoyed my experience here. Looking forward to returning

I didnt listen...the food was BAD afterall
I'm suspicious of the positive reviews. Is it me or do many seem to be written in a similar style? I read all the bad reviews for the food, but really wanted to see for myself. Some diners I've been to have better steak than this famous bistro. The halibut had a strange taste that I could not identify. It was not good. I've eaten $45 halibut in several other places that was delicious, and Balthazar is not one of them. The dessert wasn't terrible. The Boucherie restaurants in the city are much better. I looked around the restaurant, bustling with people who don't seem to care that the food is mediocre. They must be there for the name and the busy atmosphere.
Haven't been here in years.
Forgot how great it is! SoHo classic. Food, service, and wine selection are fantastic!
Another day exquisite meal After show decompression ritual.

Balthazar NY
The most busiest of The Mcnally bros restaurants empire. Not sure if the bros are actually still working together but that’s what we’ve been calling them for decades. These guys ran NYC restaurant scene forever. They had a spot in every neighborhood up and down Manhattan. Some have gone and some stayed running for decades but Balthazar is for sure their reigning champ. Most of their restaurants feel like a French Bistro and they’re pioneers of doing that. They all have patina and authentic feel. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because it’s really busy there. You feel a little bit like your part of a herd. But they probably do over $100k a day in sales so I can understand.
The vibe and service is really great.
The food is good, and you won't regret going. The French Onion soup was a little on the salty side. In fact everything was heavy on the salt. If I were to go there again I'd ask for no salt.
Sheer delight from start to finish.
We snagged a lunch reservation here to go with a friend after a morning of galavanting around some old haunts to celebrate a major marriage milestone. Balthazar was the perfect place to duck into to escape the rain. The ambience is just how a French bistro should be: buzzing, charming, and sexy. Our table was at the end of a center row right by the seafood station, and it was snug but with a nice view of all The Important People. So much botox abounded! The apricot sour is A+. We all just shared dishes starting with half a dozen wonderfully fresh oysters, and it never ceases to warm our hearts watching our six year old slurp one and then put the shell back down, correctly!, on the ice. Appetizer joy! The bibb salad is incredible: fresh leaves layered with a tangy and oniony vinaigrette that wets the beak perfectly. The fruit salad our kiddo insisted on is a joke price-wise, but at least nothing was slimy or mealy. For mains, it was steak frites, of course, mushroom ravioli, and a croquet madame. Listen, is this the best plate of steak and fries that you've ever had in your life? We'll spare you the suspense: no it is not. But is the meat not tough and cooked to the right temp? Yes. Are the fries good? Yes. If you're expecting fireworks, you'll be disappointed, so be happy with the decent plate of food in front of you and count your blessings that you get to eat in this NYC establishment. The ravioli was nice, very mushroom-forward, so no complaints, but again, you can't have the same expectations as some of the elite pasta places. The croquet madame, though, that was on the level of ones that we've had at places like Tartine and even in France. Divine--great bread, ideal ratios...just so, so good. For dessert, we all shared the berry pavlova (to have something "light") and the meringue was as it should be, with a nice zippy sauce and fruit, so what more can you ask for after a big meal? Service is fast and furious, but you get what you need. The bill is insane, but we were expecting it and we were buzzed and happy, so...so what? Four happy stars. A classic NYC meal to cheers to ten years. Will we be back? Maybe, maybe not, but we're certainly glad that we came.
Balthazar is a trendy NY restaurant that celebrities go to.
In the popular 90s show "Sex and the City" they modeled a restaurant after Balthazar in one of their episodes but called it Balzac instead. It's hard to get a reservation here which was featured in the episode. I had to make my reservation a month in advance, and I was able to snag a 5pm table. A-list celebs like the Kardashians, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Anna Wintour etc. have all dined here. They also supposedly banned James Conden from the restaurant haha. Service was excellent from the moment we walked through the door. Their host and servers were all nice and friendly. They serve bread and butter upon seating. I ordered Steak Frites and a glass of wine and both were perfection. My cousin ordered the Porcini Risotto, and he liked his food as well. It was such an enjoyable meal and definitely lived up to the hype. I'm so glad we got to dine here, when we were planning our NY trip Balthazar was at the top of our list of places to visit. If you get the chance, try them out when you're in NYC.

I came here with a friend recently on a rainy weekend for lunch. We were told it would be an hour+ wait to get inside seating, so we opted for the much more available outdoor seating. There are tents and some heaters, but definitely still some draft cause the tent flaps are left open. Not super ideal. We got the steak tartar as an appetizer, and it was ok. Definitely over-seasoned with mustard and horseradish, to the point where the actual beef flavor itself was mostly hidden away. I got the chicken paillard. Again, it was just ok. The sauce didn't bind well to the chicken, so the chicken felt under-seasoned. The chicken was cooked well overall and was quite juicy and tender, but at times, it almost felt a bit on the rarey side, with a snap and crunch to it that I don't expect from my chicken. The best part of this dish was honestly the caramelized tomatoes. Provided a super sweet juicy pop. Service was fairly average; it took us quite a while to get served + to get our check. Given that it's certainly not cheap, probably won't be back again!

Have been here many, many times over the years without a reservation and the food was always great. Went today after 5pm as a walk in for two....hostess said no tables available. There were visibly about 8 to 10 tables empty. I understand people have reservations but why are NYC restaurants becoming this ridiculous, hard to get thing lately? There is so much competition in that area, why turn people away? We went somewhere else and had a really good burger. It's not just you Balthazar, it's everywhere, but it creates this hype that real NYers don't buy. Why are you putting people outside in a hut when there are empty tables inside? How long do you hold a table if a reservation is late? Was everyone on the late train this evening? There is zero wiggle room for an accomodation. Next time I won't attempt to walk in but will instead walk on to the next one.
Good spot to grab a light breakfast.
I had the croissant and little solider and my beau had tartine. Nice, chill vibe.
Always find a way to accommodate us.
This level of service of has consistently been top. Even when there's no room, if you're patient and kind, they find a way. Food is your typical bistro fare, ambiance is always thriving in the best way, service always on point. They want you to enjoy yourself. You can see it's important to them and we see that and feel that. An institution. You've been great to us always Balthazar.
See you soon hopefully!
Friend and I decided to go to Balthazar for brunch. Great way to wake up and start the day. The food was absolute delicious. Staff was friendly and fast. Atmosphere great. Got plenty refills on the coffee. Definitely will come back.
Bad Experience.....
Is the second time in a months I came and ate at the bar with European friend both time was a bad experience. After the appetizers we ordered a Steak it was over cooked, looks sad on the plate and unfortunately it was the same for the burger overcooked and sad as well. On top of that the service was not as expected and took a very very long time to received food...The barthender gave us a poor explanation on the delay. I'm sorry but for the Balthazar I know for years this is unacceptable.......BAD EXPERIENCE. Hope this will help to improve.
Dissapointed
Food was average and prices overrated. A noisy ambiance and after one meal was returned the waitress simped pissed off that we didn’t gave her the “suggested” tip of 18,5%!! Still she did receive a good amount but didn’t even say thank you or goodbye. We will never return.
🤢🤢this place is awful
This place is laughable, absolutely terrible. If you have ever been to Paris or even Canada you will realize this place is absolutely a joke. I’m embarrassed I feel for the marketing scheme that it is.
Celebration time!!
Fabulous birthday celebration dinner! Every morsel was delicious & the service was absolutely great! We had one guest with severe food allergies & they catered to her needs perfectly! The attention to detail was well above & beyond! Highly recommend…Thank you!!!!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
