Who knew that Bao Bei would literally turn out to be my Bao
Who knew that Bao Bei would literally turn out to be my Bao Bei! We were in search of a tasting menu while visiting Vancouver, and were so glad we chose Bao Bei! I won't spoil it all for y'all, but some very noteworthy highlights: Beef Tartare: I never knew beef tartare could be so... refreshing? I don't even know how to aptly describe this. The word ethereal comes to mind. Honestly, it was so light, airy, delicate, and wonderful. And it's freaking beef! Mind blowing. Steamed Prawn, Scallop, Chive Dumplings & Steamed Pork/Sauerkraut Dumplings: Wowowowow. My mouth is watering thinking about these. Hat Yai Chicken Wings: I always appreciate when dishes I'd usually never order at nice restaurants are included in tasting menus, since it gives me a chance to try something I typically wouldn't. The wings themselves were great, but the SAUCE(!!!!) is what truly made it memorable. Service was absolutely on point. I had a moment where I had noted to my partner "sometimes at tasting menus I wish I could try multiple dishes at the same time, instead of one at a time", and literally a minute later they dropped off 2-3 dishes at a time. I think it was extremely coincidental, but it definitely had us wondering if they were listening intently!

We walked in with no reservation on a Saturday evening right when the restaurant opened. We got bar seating immediately and was treated extremely kindly by the hostess, waiter and bartender. We got the chino margarita which was the perfect consistency, foamy and not too sweet. The kick ass fried rice was incredible. Granted the housemade xo sauce is what really made the dish go up a notch but even without it, we thoroughly enjoyed. We also got the siu mai dumplings. So flavorful. We ended with the brown butter mochi cake. It's tart, chewy and the oranges add a unique freshness. We loved it. Ambiance was simple and nice, nothing crazy. It is more of a cosy small restaurant because of the small space

Bao Bei offers a delightful fusion of Asian flavors that tantalize the taste buds and leave you craving for more. The service here is impeccable, with attentive staff who ensure a memorable dining experience. However, the only downside is the proximity of the tables, which can make it feel a bit cramped. Despite this, the friendly atmosphere encourages lively conversations and adds to the charm of the place.

Amazing spot! It was recommended by three different people and I get why! You must have the king pea tips, trust me! Also the bap buns were great. The service was top notch as well, so accommodating.

Great service and food, and ambience was nice too. This place is a great place if you are looking for a good date spot.

Fantastic attentive service from the moment we walked in the door. Especially enjoyed the kick ass rice with prawns and the beef tartar. Our waitress (dark curly hair, glasses) was a delight and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine. It was my first time dining here and I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Service itself gets a star because of how attentive and detail oriented our waiter was. The food was good, but not great. It's a Chinese brasserie, so portions are pretty small. While meant for sharing, appetizer plates like the fried tofu literally come out to two bite-sized pieces of tofu. While we had skirt steak and their fried rice (too salty), the star of the night was the manitou (you get two). The buns were made and steamed in house, and they are packed full. The interior of this place kind of reminds me of a home. It's just one long space with lots of tables pushed together. All in all, it was fun coming here, but we probably wouldn't be back. If we're getting Chinese, we would probably steer towards Richmond.
Be the first to ReplyMixed experience this evening.
The pea tips, cauliflower, eggplant, and tofu skin were all great. The wagyu skirt steak was not great. I wouldn't have ordered the fried chicken wings, but we did the chef's choice, and it was included.

One of the best shared table dining experiences I've ever had. The menu started strong with a tingly pineapple hot sauce to pair with the oyster mushrooms. This juxtaposed well with the pickled eggplant. While we waited for further dishes we watched as our neighboring table repeatedly kept ordering the shao bing flatbread. When ours arrived we quickly realized why. The bok choy may be the best I've ever had. And the kick @$$ fried rice delivered a unique take on the staple dish. The wait staff was friendly and quick and the ambiance well matched the food!

Fabulous fusion. The chef's tasting menu is a mouthwatering tour around the Pacific Rim.

This restaurant is in Chinatown and is definitely something you don't want to miss trying! Our server recommended we order around 4 things and there were plenty of items from the menu that looked great and we wanted to try. We were only a party of 2 so it actually ended up being too much food and we had to pack our last dish to go after trying a bite - but still worth getting to try many dishes! We ordered the shrimp dumplings, sticky rice cakes, their noodle special they had for the day as well as the bao buns. Everything tasted amazing! The sticky rice cakes also had an egg on top and that was definitely our favorite dish next to the baos. The bao meat was super tender and it was also amazing. I definitely recommend trying this restaurant if you are in the area!
Be the first to ReplyUpscale, fancy Chinese food with a modern artistic flare.
Fantastic chic spot in Vancouver's gentrified Chinatown. This is not my usual spot, but for a special occasion or date night, this place is fantastic and delivers the goods all round. Best to make reservations. Even a week in advance, the reservation spots were limited on a Saturday evening, so best to plan well in advance. They have a lot of vegan or veganizable options, so that attracted us to give them another try (we'd visited 6-7 years ago and were also impressed, but there were vegan options back then). This time, we ordered the bean curd skin ($8.50) and Chinese pickles ($8.50) to start; and for mains, we got the stir-fried pea tips (their seasonal vegetable; $14), the Shan tofu ($21), and the sticky rice cakes ($22, which was made vegan by omitting the pork). The Chinese pickles were solid but nothing incredible. I also didn't find the small portion were the price. Pleasant, but we wouldn't order these again. 3/5The bean curd skin was perhaps the highlight of the whole meal; in fact, it was so good, we had to order another round. The bean curd skin is super thinly sliced and impeccably marinated in some special sauce. It's quite salty, but balanced beautifully. The flavours are intense -- even if you try a tiny amount of this, you get an intense flavour explosion. This dish was amazing. 5/5The pea tips were also fantastic -- amongst the best I've ever had pea tips, including my regular spots (e.g., Po Kong) -- and it's likely because of the excellent semi-rich brown sauce they're stir-fried in. As good as this dish can get. 5/5The Shan tofu was very nice. They use Burmese-style chickpea tofu and then make this with oyster mushrooms, green peppers, and spinach, with some raw greens and radish on tap. The sauce is a chili and garlic sauce, making this moderately rich. Excellent dish. 4.5/5The sticky rice cakes were served last and ensured our stomachs were full. Big portion of rice cakes, cooked with bamboo shoots and wood ear mushrooms, sprinkled with green onions. The flavouring is largely sesame oil and the dish is quite sweet, almost a bit too much. Beautiful textures and the accompaniment of bamboo shoots and wood ears really works. Excellent dish. 4.5/5The service is excellent, friendly, and prompt. We will definitely be returning here. Highly recommended for a treat. They deserve their reputation.

Super cute, eye catching, and the menu definitely looks mouth watering, but it fails to deliver (well to pick up because we ordered pickup heh). The closest comparable I have is mission Chinese, but unfortunately this didn't come close. I'd love to return when I feel comfortable eating in to try the cocktails, which I assume would push this to a solid 4. We ordered the fried rice, the fried chicken, stir fry vegetables, and veg dumplings. Fried rice - 2/4Fried chicken - 4/4Dumplings - 2/4Stir fry - 3/4

They achieve the impossible balance of suave, refined, yet informal. Delightful staff, intimate cozy ambience, delicious unusual food - what a great experience. Highlights were the beef tartare with mustard root, and the pork buns with hoisin and chili. Staked pork and nettle dumplings were unusual and subtly flavored.
Be the first to ReplyBao Bei is one of the very special restaurants in Vancouver.
The restaurant bills itself as a Chinese Brasserie, I found it to be an Asian fusion restaurant. Most of the appetizers and main courses are presented as small plates (tapas style). All of the dishes we tried were excellent. The tofu and wild mushrooms were notable, wonderfully prepared. The Shao Bing sandwich is amazing. Wonderful flavors. I also recommend the fried rice. The atmosphere is comfortable and dress casual. The Service was quick and courteous.Take along your vaccine card. You are not allowed to enter any restaurant without proof of being fully vaccinated.

This was my first time to finally get an opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. The quality of the dishes was excellent. Subtle combinations of flavours and classic Hong Kong style dim sum was very good. The room is very kitschy and the atmosphere is down low and the service staff were great. We had the tofu, potstickers, fried rice and the fish special. All were perfectly prepared, plated, and tasting. The accompanying sauces were beautifully paired. I look forward to returning and recommend you reserve soon.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing menu; it was challenging to choose from it.
After some great cocktails and sake, we ordered:1) Shao bing; we asked what they are known for, and were recommended this. Crispy and aromatic sandwich with very well balanced flavours. Amazing dish.2) Pea tips; fresh and crispy stir fried veg dish with Chinese flavours.3) Pork & nettle dumplings; rice paper dumpling served dim sum style.4) Special salmon dish; recently caught from Haida Gwaii, beurre blanc made with sake - incredible.5) Fried rice - can't say anything bad about fried rice.I would 100% recommend this place to anyone who appreciates creativity, execution, and Chinese food generally. Will be back.

Some dishes were average hence, the 4 stars- nice and unique ambience- lot of indoor seatingConsiderations: (Hence the 4 stars)- usually busy, ~30-60-min wait time when I tried during weekend nights- portions are relatively small- relatively pricey - location appears to be slightly shady- no dedicated parking option but street parking available.
