First Time East African
Was a bit leery when a coworker suggested East African food as I had never eaten this cuisine before. But he was driving and paying so I was in. Place is smaller but is nicely decorated and has a good vibe. Staff very friendly. I ordered JI Passion Fruit to drink. Like a cross between mango and pineapple without pineapple’s excessive sweetness and “thickness”, very refreshing. For my meal I ordered KUMUHANA which is marinated grilled chicken with coconut rice, corn salad, fried plantains, and stewed yellow beans. Not a fan of the beans, but everything else was very good. Parking is on street and can be tricky, but this place is worth it.

on Stephanie's recommendation i ordered the nyumbani, which i found to be delicious. the meat was tender, the plantains reminded me of what i would get in cuban restaurants and the spinach was great. i finished it off with a latte and brought home a bag of their coffee beans. will definitely go back on my next trip to Detroit.

Delicious food. Lot of use of nuts. We tried all the meat/dish dishes which were tasty and tender. The guacamole dessert was interesting and very nice. Only issue is it's very busy and seating is limited. Would highly recommend this place.

Cozy, warm place with excellent food and service! We had a gift card that did not work on-line but they quickly honored it with out a problem. Food was excellent! Service too! Would be nice if they had Tusker Beer and wine!

Excellent service and food. Authentic and tasty fare from E Africa - anything rice and chicken is very good. Goat was delicious too!

Dine here during my stay in Detroit. Got here right after opening so only one or two tables with guest. Staff greeted me when entering and also after seated offered to assist and suggest items from the menu. Dining there I got the Nyumbani which had beef. The flavors and food was so good. Perfect blend of spices and I enjoy it alot. It has to be popular with locals because a nice gathering of office staff and others start filling both the inside and outside along with to go items. The food was so good, I ordered one of the vegan meals to enjoy for dinner later. It was also excellent. So glad made the choice to dine here and will again

Like many people I had never tried African food before. Wow, it was amazing! We tried the goat shank and the braised beef. Both delicious with rice and veggies enough to take home a second helping. The beans were great as was the spinach. We will be back again.

Super great vibe in this place! The food is flavorful and the service is also excellent- great location if you are catching a show at the Fisher Building. We had the MBOGA and the plantains were delicious with their spicy sauce and a mix of both kinds of rice (coconut and spiced pilaf) definitely recommend this place!

Delicious!!!!! Go there. Had the eggplant stew. My husband had the grilled chicken. Do not miss this gem. We started the day at the Institute of Art and then Modern art museum. This was great place for lunch. Staff was so nice and the restaurant is really cool.

Brother and his wife recommended this restaurant so 5 of us went for a late Sunday lunch. I had the Kuku which was very tasty - the chicken, the plantains, beans, and rice were all very tasty. The staff was very friendly and service was faultless.I will return on future visits to Detroit.

Such an intriguing menu and the pics are making me want the food even more. Cute and fun interior. Started off with Kuku, Kumuhana, peanut stewed spinach, Ji passion fruit, Tamu and coco mango. $70.18. The passion fruit is not bad, not too sweet and it’s made sweet with cane sugar. The kuku is tender and nicely flavored and yummy. The kumuhana is decent, a bit lacking in flavor for me. The corn salad is good, the yellow beans and the plaintains are so-so. The coconut rice is flaky, light and flavorless. The spinach is also not too The avocado passion fruit pudding was the better part of my meal, nicely tart from the passion fruit, smoothness from the avocado, so delicious and refreshing too. I would get the Kuku and the tamu again. Service isn’t bad here.

Never having eaten Burudian food before, I did not know what to expect. We tried the goat and fish dishes with the small chicken side and the spinach side. Very flavorful, but more subtle than I would have expected from such descriptors as "spicy, crispy fish." Small menu. Very busy but the waitress seemed to have it all under control with several runners getting the meals out quickly.
