Bar Crenn opened about 18 months ago and became instantly popular. So much so that it is hard to get reservations at any reasonable time. It’s adjacent to Dominique Crenn’s eponymous Michelin 3-star restaurant, Atelier Crenn. No small wonder reservations are difficult as the bar also serves as a waiting area to the main restaurant. It’s like a first class lounge before you embark on a well-thought out 345 USD 14-course flight at Atelier Crenn (plus you get a tour of the kitchen). The bar also serves as a way to offer an ala carte tasting menu at half the price without diluting the main restaurant’s offering. I say a tasting menu because portion sizes, while somewhat more than taste sized, are not always so much more. You’ll need 4-6 plates to make up a dinner and it prices out to about 150 USD per person. Most of the items we tried were perfect, including the heavenly brioche (10 USD but enough for two). There were clunkers. The Vol au Vent aux Legumes (puff pastry with vegetables) is essentially a mini-quiche with some greens and hardly worth 23 USD. The Cabillaud et Pomme puree fume (black cod etc) is a measly 100 grams (about 4 ounces) before cooking! At 37 USD it might as well be caviar. Otherwise, the rest of the menu is excellent. Wine is another story. Be prepared to plunk down 100 USD or more for a bottle. That’s not to say Bar Crenn is greedy. Indeed, most wines come with a typical 2-3x markup. The problem is that most are high quality wines that demand a high price. The online wine menu is current so I recommend you research which ones you want ahead of time. There is also a well priced cider and beer menu but I don’t think the food here goes with either one. The atmosphere is elemental, a perfect mix of personal service, low background jazz, and French sensibility. This is one of the most refined wine bars in SF. Dress accordingly, there is no need for jackets and designer dresses but sharp attire makes you and the place look great. Never mind that in SF you’ll get some sloppily dressed people; don’t fall into that rut. Seating is problematic. Most tables are lounge style knee high low tops and I find those difficult with food. If you’re only going to do mostly wine then any of those are fine. As a dinner outing, I would opt for counter seating. Make sure you ask for a particular seating style when you make your reservation. Bar Crenn is pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. I recommend you try it if your budget allows.
