A Theatre District Gem
Theatre District gem. Northern Italian cuisine in the heart of the Theatre District. Main dinner room exudes history and tradition. The food was prepared with the care of a hit Broadway show. Waiter Tito Garay shared that he is approaching his third decade at the restaurant. Tito was knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu. He was both professional and personable. Reservations a must! An incredible meal is guaranteed.
Be the first to ReplyOldest Italian restaurant in NYC
What an amazing experience we had! I was searching for something special in the theater district and oh boy did I find it! This is the oldest Italian restaurant in all of New York City. It is old school, elegant, and the food is divine! I look forward to returning time and time again.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent old world experience
Still our favorite pre theatre dinner in Nyc. Havenโt been there for several years but it felt like coming home. With so many old restaurants disappearing itโs a pleasure to see Barbettaโs 100+ year run is not over. Food was great and so was service. Itโs an โold worldโexperience you should try at least once.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious, beautiful, but disappointed
Let me give some context for reference...I visit the city frequently and have never given a second thought as to a bill for dining out. Last night my wife and I had a post show dinner at Barbetta. Let me say the ambiance was beautuful, the service very good (they forgot to bring my wife's coffee), and the food delicious. What I did not like was after sitting down, we were told that the price fix menu was the only menu you could choose from. It was limited to say the least. We went there for their extensive menu options, and to not have an option was disappointing. Most restaurants, if not all, allow you to order from their regular menu. (Price fix was $63 p/p) PF included appetizer, entree, side salad, and dessert. We both chose a pasta for an appetizer (I also ordered a la carte minestrone soup for upcharge), my wife had a bass dish, and I had a braised beef dish. What was most surprising was when I was given the bill. I was charged $19 for a small plate of pasta as an appetizer. I was also charged $24 per glass of wine for my wife x2 & $16 per glass x2 for me. I've never paid $24 for a glass of wine. Overall, very nice restaurant. In my opinion, overpriced. There are many great Italian restaurants in NYC whose food are outstanding, with lovely ambiance, and do not charge those prices for a small plate of pasta and $24 for a glass of wine, and also limit you to a special menu. Total bill with tip, $300
Be the first to ReplyVery Special Experience
While not everyone will love this place, many of us think it is exceptional and wonderful. The downside is the old style decor. As family owned for more than a century, it reflects a rich history. It is steeped in history. The service was first rate and the Maitre D, Eduardo is a treasure. He is the orchestra conductor who treats every diner like his special guest while making the house run smoothly. We had a first rate pre-theater dinner, totally un-rushed and special. The food was high quality. We had salmon and rabbit. Starters, salads and desserts were a pleasure. This is a spacious, comfortable place where you can have a conversation without the usual noise of other venues. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Pre-Theatre Meal at a Great Price in a Historic Restaurant
Several weeks ago my wife was in NY with friends from Washington and they introduced her to Barbetta. She liked it so much, she brought me when we were in town this week for a Broadway Play. We had the pre-theatre menu. The food was outstanding. I had wild rice and crab. I've never had better. She had the filet mignon and loved it. Not only was the food excellent and the restaurant gorgeous but it's ideally located in the theatre district. The Maitre D', Eduardo, went out of his way to tell us the history of the restaurant and the family that owns it - the oldest family-owned restaurant still in operation in NY. It's quite a story. Ask for Eduardo; He's a real gem. Barbetta is now our "go to" pre-theatre restaurant. Hopefully, they'll still have crab and wild rice on the menu next time we visit.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect
We recently had dinner at this divine restaurant, meeting with a friend who lives in NYC. The outside courtyard area is perfect for a summers evening, lovely food and wine/beer, service was incredible. Barbetta is a hidden gem, if I could give you 100 stars I would! Greetings from England!
Be the first to ReplyGreat for Pre-Theater Dinner
When the restaurant we originally planned to eat dinner at before seeing Jagged Little Pill had no one in it, we checked the internet and found a seating at Barbetta - so glad that we did! Location is great, atmosphere is amazing (with great history!), service and food were excellent - and we were able to get through our 'theater menu' meal with plenty of time to make it to the show - would definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyFood was divine!
We were looking for a restaurant where we could dine post theaterโright now very few options on a Saturday night. We arrived around 10 pm and were the only patrons, usually not a good sign. In this case we were delightfully surprised. We each chose different 1/2 portions of pasta for first course and all were very well prepared ( agnolotti, gnocchi, and a roasted tomato spaghetti) - mains ( rack of lamb and rabbit) did not disappoint. For dessert hazelnut cake and lemon/pistachio torte. Service was attentive, wine list extensive. The room is a bit formal, old school style. There is a courtyard which looks like it would be inviting in warmer weather. Looking forward to a return.
Be the first to ReplyBarbetta is a lovely authentic Italian restaurant
If you are looking for an authentic Italian experience, you must try Barbetta. We loved the authentic and tasty food and the atmosphere was so charming. From a friendly greeting and handshake upon entrance, we felt like family the entire visit. The wine was absolutely marvelous.
Be the first to ReplyUnexpectedly fantastic
We almost cancelled after reading recent reviews and I am so glad we didnโt. The food was exceptional. The sea bass was cooked perfectly with a crispy crust, the scallops were phenomenal and the gnocchi - wow. Great service and great Waiter who has been there 52 years. Really a great meal and experience. Perfect pre-theater.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a place.
I have read a few of the reviews on here and they seem to sum this place up perfectly. We stumbled across it after having a very busy day sightseeing. We were blown away in so many ways. The decor it extremely dated, the service is laugh out loud at points, the food was good, not great but good. My husband and I had a fantastic night, enjoying the waiter looking for his corkscrew to open a bottle of wine with a screw top, he then seemed very annoyed with the bottle and almost through the bottle in the ice bucket! Poured wine for my husband but not me, cleared plates we had not quite finished, brought desserts when we still had a mouth full of our main course. If you want an adventure in New York you must visit, if you prefer you dinner without a laugh then then please avoid.
Be the first to ReplyFood ok, letโs talk about the restโฆ
As an Italian man let me start making a clear distinction between what is defined a nice ancient, and what is defined an ugly old. I saw many excited comments on TA that highly talked about the ancient stile of the restaurant โฆ in this place there is really Nothing ancient but only old stuff that I would have thrown away many years ago.
Our restaurant experience began with a rude lady at the wardrobe, that did not allow my wife to keep her fur coat with us, the restaurant was empty, but she said using a very imperative tone โor you leave it with me or you will be forced to wear it at all timeโโฆ
Our food was served in a timely manner, but it was just ok, not good and not bad, just eatable.
The service was ok, but a bit tired and with no emotion,
This place needs a deep reform, that include a full renovation of the interiors and a more actual menu, if they want to regain a prestige that has been lost. Don't waste your money here.
Still FABULOUS!!!
My husband & I had a lovely dinner here on a Tuesday evening after a show. I hadn't been since pre-pandemic and it was closed during that time, as well, and just recently re-opened. It was LOVELY to be back! This place really takes you back to old world charm! The entrance is under a brownstone stoop and is deceptive from the outside on how grand the scale is. The space it quite large and is 2 brownstones wide with super high ceilings. A venue like this is not found in old pre-war spaces, but maybe in the hotels. The staff is dressed in typical high end restaurants in black & white with ties. The tables are white table cloths and set a comfortable distance apart. There is also a very large outdoor garden open seasonally. The food was delicious and drinks were great. The clientele was very mixed with a large group in the middle taking up 3 tables, to older couples, younger couples, a couple with 2 young kids, and my husband & I (middle ages) on a date night. If you're looking for some old NYC glamour, then definitely go to Barbetta!
Be the first to ReplyWorst Restaurant ever!
The atmosphere was supposed to be elegant and the Rest. states it has been in business for over 100 yrs. The decor shows it. This was by far the worst Restaraunt we had ever eaten in. And we eat out a lot!! My dish was terrible and I did not even eat it. When the waiter asked if it was ok...I told him the truth and said we just wanted our check. He said ok and sent someone over with it. Never apologized or explained the bad food. The waiter (a different one, because there were many who kept asking if we wanted more water since our food was taking so long) was extremely rude when we wanted water the 1st time. He asked if we wanted the bottled Water, when I said no the tap was fine...under his breathe he was saying as he was walking away from the table "oh...so you want the NY Tap water!) I called him back and got the bottle, he made it seem like the water was going to taste like crap! (Older waiter, White Hair, White Jacket) When another waiter came by later with the "Tap Water" he said it was clean and filtered...and "nothing wrong with it" we had already opened the Bottle at this point. This was a one and done and we will NEVER return! Way to go for customer service and word of mouth to have people return there. I think word of mouth is huge for repeat customers? Maybe they thought we will never return to NY anyway? Or never send anyone their way? They are correct now!
Be the first to ReplyDo not stop visiting it !!!
I went to new york and visited barbetta, an excellent Italian food restaurant, their food is very delicious, their attention is excellent, the place is beautiful and pleasant. What I liked the most was that I found that the owners of the restaurant, a couple who were very friendly, the man was a biologist and Nobel Prize in Medicine and the woman was too friendly. I want to go back because the experience was very satisfactory.
Be the first to ReplyDinner after Phantom of the Opera with my Family from NJ and PA
We took my father and my aunt to see Phantom of the Opera for my Dadโs 70th Bday, along with our daughters, and went to Barbetta afterwards. We are very particular with food so it took me a while to choose a restaurant. When we got to Barbetta, we were disappointed to find out that they had a prefixe menu only. When I made the reservation and on their website, it mentioned nothing of the sort. I was irritated and spoke to a manager. The manager didnโt do anything but sent over Eduardo, their maitre D. Eduardo made all of my frustrations go away by his amazing personality, calm demeanor, and funny sayings. We are Italian and so is he so he was telling us about his life in Argentina, how he came here, my husband is German so he was telling Eduardo how he came here, etc. The food choices, although limited, were fantastic and especially the mozzarella! We could have spoken to Eduardo all night. We will go back to Barbetta one day but I will call ahead to make sure Eduardo is there first. Thank you Eduardo for turning a bad start to Barbetta to making it a fantastic evening for my family and I! I am sorry this took so long for me to write a review. Best regards- Andi and Marie (the German and the Italian Mamma)
Be the first to ReplyWhat a great old school, quite formal, Italian restaurant in the theater district
We went here after the theater with a friend, who had been here before and recommended it. The decor is old fashioned, quite ornate, and elegant. The bar area seemed nice, although we just walked through it, and the dining room is very pleasant, if old school. White tablecloths and chandeliers. We had a 9:45pm reservation, and there were only 2 other tables occupied when we arrived...and one table was still going strong when we left. Perhaps because the restaurant was almost empty, it was delightfully quiet. You could actually carry on a conversation in a normal speaking voice, but I suspect that even when full, the noise level would be just fine. Service was excellent...attentive but not obtrusive...and even though the wait staff outnumbered the patrons and it was getting late, we never felt rushed.
We ordered pretty simple and light meals...salads, pastas and risotto. Everything was quite lovely.
The wine steward was excellent. I don't know much about Italian wines so asked for some advice. He recommended some wines, but a lot of the ones he initially pointed out were in the mid triple digit price range. I said that I would prefer to stay out of the triple digit price range altogether and he immediately and smoothly recommended what turned out to be a very nice wine for $85. Something I would never have tried if it weren't for his recommendation. Very professional.
Surprisingly enough, our bill was very reasonable. Admittedly, we did have pretty frugal meals (not because we were cheap but because that's what we wanted for a late night dinner), but compared to other NYC restaurants and given the overall experience, this seemed something of a bargain.
My overall comment is that while the food and service were excellent, the real reason to go here is because this is almost like stepping back into a kinder, gentler and more comfortable era. If you want to go to a cutting edge, trendy restaurant that is loud and specializes in foam and sous vide, this is not the place for you. If you want to go to an old fashioned, elegant, up scale Italian restaurant, this place is hard to beat.
Old school Italian
Old school Italian ambiance, service, and cuisine. Our large group ordered off the theater Prix Fixe menu and found it to be a very good value. App, salad, entree, dessert, and coffee for $58pp (plus some minor upcharges depending on the entree selected). Very large, open dining space considering the location. Live piano music was a nice, classy touch.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
I looked forward to dining at Barbetta. It has an appealing entrance and some old world charm. I ordered the pork which had grizzle. My meal was not hot. The service was somewhat unfriendly. It was disappointing. There was a lack of warmth and feeling welcome.
