Very unique place for smoked fish.
The Sable is so good. Bagles are great as well. For non-smoked fish preference, the white fish salad is also pretty good.
Be the first to ReplyHad to try it.
Got matzoh ball soup. Got a bagel with nova and scallion cream cheese. Bagel tasty and flavorful. Nova was delicious. Matzo ball soup was weak. The matzoh ball was good. Very pricey but glad I experienced it. Service was fine.
Be the first to ReplyBest deli in the city.
They have the BEST lox I've ever had. You can get bagels at the deli counter to go or have a sit down meal. Came here for a sit down brunch on a Sunday morning with a party of 2. We had to wait in like for 10 minutes before being seated. We got the off menu latkes and nova eggs and onion scramble. The ambiance is exactly what you would expect- no frills, cozy, calls out your order and just really good food.

Bagels, Deli meat, lots of fish choices. They specialize in smoked fish. This place had been around over hundred years, and it's a neighborhood mainstay. It's get crowded, so try to come early to avoid rush hours. Another option is to do take out.
Be the first to ReplyVisited here two separate times recently.
The first time for lunch to try their pastrami on rye and corned beef as well as their deli pickles at the recommendation of the Michelin Guide and the second time for Saturday morning breakfast to try their bagel and lox. I'll say right off the bat that their pastrami and corned beef was just okay by NYC standards and while better than most you would probably get from outside NYC it wasn't nearly as fresh or flavorful as other storied Jewish delis in the city serving up hot pastrami and corned beef like Katz's where there seems to be higher turnover and you literally get your meat piping hot out of the cooker. I probably wouldn't come back to Barney Greengrass seeking a pastrami on rye again now that I've tried it. As for the bagel & lox this is a solid choice without a doubt. Their smoked Nova Scotia salmon sliced fresh in front of you is phenomenal and their bagels they put it on stand up pretty well too. I ordered mine on a plain bagel with plain cream cheese, capers, tomato and onion and I enjoyed every bite. Barney Greengrass and Russ & Daughters on the lower east side seem to be the two spots that always get listed as the best spots for bagel & lox in NYC and they both are pretty comparable to each other. I would definitely be back to either when craving a bagel & lox sandwich. I would visit with the expectation that you will be taking your order to go as there are limited tables here and it's tough to say how busy it will be when you go, though I did visit during an off time for lunch around 3 pm and the tables were mostly empty except for mine and one other. If you're looking for an old school iconic NYC establishment to try this is a good choice as they have been open since 1908 and their space looks very historic and old school. They have a weird policy where they accept credit cards on weekdays and then on weekends they are cash only so definitely take note of that.

This is a 3-star review with one star docked because of price/value. I have been going to BGG for decades. At one time the smoked salmon was arguably the best on the UWS. There was a lively debate going on as to which was better - Zabar's or BGG. Unfortunately for both the best smoked salmon is on the UES at Sable's - but that's another review. This restaurant is still heavy on the "old New York" charm but the quality of the food, while good does not justify the price. The smoked salmon is very very good, the blintzes are classic, the egg dishes are hot and come out quickly. The service is friendly. Atmosphere is very very crowded as most tourist destinations become. It was a solid 3 stars but the expense tilted the value away from going again. It's still a decent place to take out-of-town guests without having to go to the lower east side or Russ & Daughters. Real New Yorkers will pickup their own favorites that might include BGG more for nostalgia than epicurean satisfaction.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered a corned beef on rye.
I specified lean. It was the most disgusting sandwich I've ever had. Not just fatty; the corned beef was pale pink, almost grayish. As unappetizing to see as it was to taste. I later realized I should've gotten fish as that's their specialty. But I hadn't realized it. $25 sandwich and I ate about 1/4 of it. Note: this was after the burned coffee and the lukewarm chicken soup with hard matzoballs. When they gave me coffee, they originally wanted me to use the open pitcher of creamer that was already sitting on the table from previous customers.

Great quality lox, solid cream cheese, good onion and caper ratio. The bagel was good. It wasn't spectacular.Their coffee was fresh and strong, which I prefer.

When we were first greeted by Server 12 we immediately knew we would be in for an entertaining time. Service was prompt and thorough, and after being plied with coffee it was finally time to order. Our server did a great job explaining the nuances of the entire school of fish on the menu - turns out sable is similar to a cod, who knew! Other notes: the classic nova bagel was excellent and the nova scramble was a new take (but with a lot of onions). Note- the bagels and bialys come toasted unless you ask otherwise! The outdoor seating, even on a chilly winter day was comfortable, with a robust heating element above. We're adding a additional vote in favor of this UWS staple-- just note: cash only!

A true, laid-back NY deli serving up some of the best whitefish salad I have ever tasted. Stopped in for a late afternoon lunch to quench my thirst for some traditional Jewish-style noshes. Outstanding pastrami, nova salmon, coleslaw, matzoh ball soup, and schmear. Make sure you get a cup of coffee to complete the meal. Disregard the other comments about the service-I'm confused why people are expecting to be doted on at a deli restaurant? If you're looking to get your hand held throughout the entire meal, you don't deserve the authentic NY Jewish deli experience. These establishments are supposed to have an attitude-its New York, stop your kvetching already!
Be the first to ReplyBarney Greengrass has a reputation for impatient wait staff
Barney Greengrass has a reputation for impatient wait staff and amazing smoked fish. The latter is definitely true, but the former is a myth. Our waiter was a great guy, and everything that we ordered was fantastic. The whitefish salad is the best I've ever tasted, and the latkes were better than my grandma's (luckily, she isn't on Yelp). I wasn't able to get a photo of the black-and-white cookie (I scarfed it down too quickly), but it's definitely one of the best in the city. Barney Greengrass is 100% worth the 30-45 minute wait. Highly recommend!

We have been going to Barney Greengrass for years and had the oddest experience today. While the food was good, as usual, nothing else was. There were no two-top tables available so the two of us were given a four-top. After sitting down we were moved to a two-top that had just opened up. Reluctantly we moved and the four-top was not occupied the whole time we were there. The two-top was dirty and we had to ask for it to be cleaned. None of the usual old-time staff was there- I was told they had all retired. The waiter we had was okay but shorted us one bagel which we had to ask for. The rest of the experience was okay. However, when I tried to tell the usual man at the register he barely paid any attention to me and he didn't care at all. After we paid and walked out I went back for a chocolate babka muffin which was very ordinary. Very disappointing especially for their prices!

A NYC landmark with old school Jewish food and unpretentious charm. I've been coming here for 50 years. The off the menu latkes are a must and the fish sandwiches are wonderful. However, the portion sizes seem to have shrunk considerably. The bagels and bialys are mini sized now and the amount of fish is quite small. Perhaps they are trying not to raise prices, which is admirable and appreciated, but I left still hungry. That's a first in an old style Jewish restaurant
Be the first to ReplyThis place is okay I guess.
I got a sturgeon and egg sandwich on a bialy with onions and a babka muffin. The sandwich was good! Definitely enjoyable and quality. But is it $20 good? No way. Also very small. Maybe worth $8. The babka was really just not good. It was very dry and hardly any chocolate and generally just unenjoyable. I guess that's not what they're known for, so maybe I "shouldn't have gotten it", but still strikingly bad and not worth eating. I didn't finish it. The system is pretty unclear. The service was very nice though - had really positive interactions with both the guys I talked to as I was figuring the system out. For somewhere so busy, they were very kind and friendly. So that was nice! Also just FYI it's cash only.
Be the first to ReplySturgeon king? Oh yeah, the sturgeon is great.
We took a ride to the upper west side, skipping our normal stop Russ and Daughters, to dine here specifically for their smoked sturgeon and nova onion scrambled eggs. The sturgeon was fantastic and a lighter option to lox or Nova. The nova scrambled eggs were surprisingly light with delicate flavors, the onions made the dish and the nova got a bit lost in my mind. The true highlight was the chopped liver we picked up to go. Life altering, though I'll admit I don't have much experience with the dish. I'm not a fan of liver, but their chopped liver was absolutely sublime. No hint of organ flavor or graininess. New Orleans murals around the dining room are old school and service is beyond friendly. I was a tourist but they treated us like regulars....and the other guests seemed to all be regulars.
Be the first to ReplySo much has been made about this place.
Recently went there and think it is way past its hey day. Kind of dirty and rundown. A sesame bagel with nova and cream cheese cost like almost $20. And an older dude at the register told me when I gave my credit card: "We don't take credit cards on weekends," and then tossed it on the counter. And it was a weekday, so I was really puzzled. The bagel was OK, as was the cream cheese, but the lox/smoked salmon did not taste as though it was worth the price. Real fishy salty and not that buttery-ness of Russ and Daughters.I think there is nostalgia for this place, more than it deserves. As a native Manhattan-ite, Russ and Daughters and then Zabars are best bets for a bagel and lox sammie.
Be the first to ReplyThe omelettes are great.
The pastrami sandwich is good too. Classic spot with classic service. I'd recommend it to anyone. Cash only on the weekends
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, it's hard to get a feel and soak in the allegedly
Honestly, it's hard to get a feel and soak in the allegedly historic atmosphere of this place when, after the hostess seats you in what she describes as a 'bright place with lots of great light', your waiter moves you to the back of the restaurant, next to the kitchen where all the staff are hanging out with the various carts filled with provisions they need to do their job. Needless to say, when I saw the table they moved me from just sat there empty with three other around it, I left. I know, first world problems, but I'd I'm going to pay $20 for a bagel with lox and cream cheese (yes, you read that right) my experience needs to be considered for the 20 minutes I'm going to be there. If I ever visit this place again (it half a block from me) I will not tip. Hashtagnotip.

A COMPLETE RIPOFF! The food quality is extremely poor, disgusting and rancid! Their coffee is burnt and stale, the lox has black streaks in it, all the fish is extremely salty, they serve small portions of food,an extremely cluttered and small store, the restaurant is very old, very small and very depressing! The prices are highway robbery and no value at all for your money! The waiter service is horrific, nasty, abusive, toxic, ungrateful, bad attitude, entitlement and another level of arrogance I have never seen before! I saw rats running around in the outside dining area as well!STAY AWAY from this toxic unethical business! Thank me later!
Be the first to ReplySome of the best smoked salmon I've had.
East Nova is a little less salty. All of it is cut fresh, so that it doesn't dry out and the slices are the perfect thickness to pile onto a bagel with cream cheese. Staff is also friendly and offer help if it's your first time or need a recommendation.
Be the first to ReplyOld school bagel place offers sit down meals too.
All kinds of baked goods like Bally's challah and desserts. The fish offerings look luscious as well. Prices can add up. Bring cash.
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant deserves the rarest of my ratings- five
The restaurant deserves the rarest of my ratings- five solid stars. Run, don't walk, to Barney's. Order the latkes and potato knish. You can't eat it all, but order it anyhow. The latkes will change your life; crispy outside, soft inside with just the right amount of onion. And the applesauce is just as good. The knish is baked perfectly, and you won't find a better one. Ask for a to go bag and load your leftovers so you can make room for your entree. My spouse and I split a nova lox everything bagel. This was the most mild and tender lox you can eat in NYC. It even beat Zabar's and that's impossible to do. Even the bagel was toasted perfectly. By this point, you'll be so stuffed that someone will have to roll you out. But when they do, have them roll you to the ATM across the street at CVS. Barney Greengrass takes cash or check only.

My guess is that if you scroll through the reviews for Barney Greengrass you will read review after review after review accurately describing their absolutely delicious food. You'll probably also read about their terrific selection and about the incredible quality of the food that they offer and how reasonable their prices are considering that every single item on the menu will be the best thing you've ever tasted. But this review is different. I want to add to all of those other comments (which are entirely true) that it is also the case that the owners of this spectacular place are among the kindest, most professional, most compassionate, and genuinely caring people you will encounter anywhere. They literally moved mountains for me to overnight ship their food to a friend that is ill and lives out of the city. Their peach of an owner, Gary, is likely correct that their food is so nutritious and so delicious and so wonderfully comforting that if you were to submit the receipt from Barney Greengrass to your health insurance carrier they would probably pay the bill.
Be the first to ReplyCLASSIC NYC establishment that my fiancé and I just never
CLASSIC NYC establishment that my fiancé and I just never had a chance to try until this year. We were actually in search of bialy's on a Sunday morning and on a whim we decided to sit down for breakfast. We ordered a plate of the Nova Scotia Smoked salmon and white fish (came with an everything bagel), the off menu potato latkes that were recommended by other diners and the server, and the cheese blintzes. The potato latkes were not like anything we had had before and we loved them! The smoked fish plate was enjoyable. The blintzes were just okay and we could have done without them. To our disappointment, they didn't have any garlic bialys and we were told that the factory hadn't been sending them those bialys for some time. Their regular bialys are just okay. We are still on the search for NYC's best bialys. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and would be back just for the Potato Latkes.
