Spectacular
Molecular gastronomy is now part of the Palo Alto scene and we are all better for it! The food is adventurous, impeccably prepared and a celebration of fresh seasonal ingredients. Service is top-notch, the wine selection is careful and perfectly complementary. The dining room is a bit spartan and cold but it does not in any way detract from the masterpiece of a meal that you will experience - an pay for.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and disappointing for the price
Incredibly overpriced, poor service, undesirable ambiance, and mediocre food are some of the things you can expect at Baumé.
I still can’t believe that this place is associated with Michelin. We’ve been to most of the one, two and three Michelin Star restaurants in San Francisco. We decided to make the drive to Palo Alto to try out Baumé, despite some of the negative reviews.
It was such a waste of a $1000. The meal wasn’t worth $398 per tasting menu. That’s more expensive than Manresa and Saison, both of which are 3 stars and will blow you away with the innovation and technique.
I was surprised when the waitress leaned in to take away the napkin rings as I assumed she was going to place our napkins on our lap as most fine dining restaurants do. At Baumé, you put your own napkins on your lap and don’t expect it to be folded nicely when you return from the restroom either.
The waitress is overly chatty to the point of being inappropriate and unprofessional. She mentions incidents from past dining experiences and laughs at her statements. She laughs a lot. One thing she doesn't speak a lot about is the food as she barely provides any explanation beyond a few words.
The ambience is cold and undesirable. It felt like I was sitting in a church storage room. It’s not the type of interior where you envision enjoying a high end meal and celebrating a special occasion.
I have very little to say about the food. It wasn’t anything special. I’ve had much better meals in non-Michelin starred restaurants in SF.
Wine and the few cocktails that they offer are super expensive. For the firsf time at a fine dining restaurant celebrating a special event we choose not to drink. $45 for a saketini or $50 for a kir royal is extortionate. Furthermore there is no open kitchen or bar where you are able to watch the chef prepping this $398 tasting menu. Given the small amount of tables, you might expect to at least see the chef. However, he remains a mystery somewhere in back.
Two Star Place, $$$$$ Prices!
This was our first experience with a 2 Michelin-starred restaurant so I had nothing to compare it to. Closest I’d come was back in 1982 when I was in the Navy and me and a buddy had a “Paycheck Dinner” ie blowing our entire paycheck on a fancy French meal, which was about $400. Worked about the same at Baume except it was $2040!
Others here have covered the place quite accurately, except that I found the service excellent, wine was presented prior to pouring. I’m no wine snob, but the pairings were excellent. I looked up the wines that were served (photo attached) and none were more than $50 save the 1963 Port that was $150 - being charged $40-50 per glass is pretty over the top.
All the place settings were unique, plates and flatware of amazing quality and color - no Crate and Barrel stuff here.
Upshot: Tasting menu portions very small but very creative, esp with the use of liquid nitrogen. The desserts were AmAzINg.
Very Very Good, But up to Paris 2 Michelin Star Restaurants
We enjoyed our lunch and wine pairing.
Some dishes served warm, not hot!
We travel extensively to Europe, eat in Michelin Star restaurants each trip, our conclusion was this did not measure up to most all Michelin Star restaurants in Paris.
The restaurant is run by husband and wife, she is very nice, handled the pairings and food service.
I do think it lacks the sophistication of restaurants of Europe.
At the end of the meal we met Bruno and his 14 year old son who is learning the business.
A very nice experience!
Best foie gras till date!
I had my birthday treat this year at Baume, Palo Alto.
I found out about the restaurant through the Michelin list/website. Looked up the restaurant's web site and found out the reservation process. Made reservations via email. Process was easy and straightforward. Opted for the 6-course tasting menu.
Each course was delicious and offered an interesting take on the ingredients.
The ambiance was highly exclusive, only 7 or 8 tables served at a time. The host and server who is also the co-owner of the restaurant was friendly, gracious and patiently explained the menu in detail!
Only one thing to note, parking is limited around the restaurant. Please plan accordingly especially if you are visiting during the week. The meal typically takes 3 hours, which means you may have to move your vehicle in between!
Overall a very memorable dining experience!
Superb fine dining experience!
We were so pleased after this lunch, we are still savoring every memory of the experience!
We reached there on time! We were greeted by our friendly hostess, who we later came to know was the co-proprietor, co-owner of the restaurant and in charge of the front-of-house, Christie.
We had already informed that we were Vegetarian.
We loved the nice dining room which gave a nice semi-private feel.
We chose to add the "Truffle supplemental" - since Black truffles were in season.
Then the magic started -
Every single course hit the mark from Amuse right up to dessert and mignardise.
The amuse, barley and jadori egg, the tofu + fennel dish, the dish, the parsnip soup that accompanied the truffles, the edamame hummus - every single thing was a new exploration in taste for us. There were tiny bits of surprises laid throughout.
Christie, when asked about any dish, was very forthcoming with how they sourced ingredients to how they prepare the dish.
At the end of the meal, we met and thanked the chef maestro - Bruno Chamel for a wonderful meal.
Overall a memorable experience and we will most definitely repeat
Amazing intimate experience
Recently visited Baumé for lunch and had an amazing meal. Food is deserving of their multiple Michelin stars, and the décor and service make it a unique experience.
The restaurant is surprisingly dark, even during lunch the curtains completely block outside light. There's a hanging light for each table that illuminates the food and table however that made for good lighting on the food itself. Our waiter also served as the hostess and sommelier--the whole staff consists of a husband and wife, their son and a dishwasher.
For food and drink we had two refreshing cocktails and a six course lunch tasting menu. We really enjoyed all of the dishes, but the amuse bouche and turbot stood out as our favorites. If you have a chance, ask about how some of them are made since the preparation was often surprising.
Dark, good food, ridiculous wine prices
Very nice food, well worth the Michelin star. Strange entree: very dark. Only 3 tables in the "main" dining room and 2 extra tables alongside the bar. Downside is the drinks: you can only have the wine pairing (or: multiple glasses of 1 of the wines in the pairing), which will cost 200$ for 4 glasses of good wine, and 800$ for 4 glasses of excellent wine. That is a bit over the top.. For the rest: very nice, great and personal service, lovely food.

$1400 for two people for dinner eating pine needles and tofu even though they are shaped like olives is a scam. The value of the food actually consumed by each individual is probably about $20. Yes, the chef is an artist and the presentation of the tiny dishes is innovative and requires a lot of skill. Taste is something else. Absolutely not worth the cash outlay.
