Commendable Indian restaurant with fairly priced dishes of appropriately spiced food that aren't heavy on thick creams/sauces. $17 a dish. 4/5 stars as a dinner spot.
Be the first to ReplyI had never had Indian food before.
My coworker told me I had to try this place out and that my world would be rocked. AND HOLY COW was he right! We ordered what seemed like a little bit of everything. I was waiting for something to not sit right with me but everything continually got better and better! We got the Khasta Gobi, Samosa, aachari chicken tikka to start along with cocktails from their full bar. Then to finish the meal, garlic naan with butter chicken, saag panner, and yellow dal which pleasantly surprised me with the punch it packed. This restaurant is a MUST. The food, atmosphere and service were all spot on. A few outstanding people who made our night above and beyond enjoyable are- Aankit, Harish, Munir, and Htoo! I even met a few awesome regulars who solidified my conclusion that this place ROCKS!Benares is a perfect date night spot, perfect after work dinner spot, they even offer a great brunch menu too. I have not tried that yet but will report back when I do. RUN DON'T WALK to Benares and thank me later! I'll definitely be back ASAP.

One of the best Indian food restaurants we've had in the city because the flavor of the food was actually memorable (so nicely spiced!). On top of that the service was attentive, especially our server Harish who had great recommendations and was careful with our dietary restrictions. Tons of vegetarian and vegan options and portions were generous. Look forward to coming back to try other options on three menu.

Benares is always a good time! The staff is very friendly and dedicated. Check out the lunch special if you are in the area mid-day. On a Friday night it can get crowded with families and parties, so reservations are recommended (although not required).

Four of us stumbled upon Benares while looking for a place to continue an informal meeting. A GREAT FIND! The food was OUTSTANDING and reasonably priced, the staff was utterly accommodating (they moved us to a booth when we requested it) and flexible about our orders. When we left, taking a portion of our generous lunch food in containers they provided, they brought us extra rice to take along. ALL the staff was great, but one particularly lovely older gentleman was so attentive and kind, he made our experience an absolute pleasure. Thank you, Benares!
Be the first to ReplyFood was very tasty but don't overeat.
You'll regret it bad!Server and manager for the day were really invested in growing the business and taking care of the customer. Because all the food laden with fat - ghee, butter on all items. Even the pav for the misal came out like a French fry - dripping with butter. The apps were my favourite. The yellow dal was great but tad too oily. Paneer was cooked really well. Their spicy naan was not worth it - not spicy for an andhrite/Telugu person.
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be our go to.
The last few times we've ordered delivery it's just not good. The food has changed. Maybe a new chef??? Not sure but it's so disappointing when one of your consistent places goes under. The lamb was grey and rubbery this time so unfortunately, we're done ordering here.

Went for Valentine's Day, great staff, food came out quickly and was great, and festive decorations and complimentary dessert for Valentine's Day. Recommend.
Be the first to ReplyLoved this spot- took my coworkers out for a goodbye lunch.
We were going to go to Aahar down the street but it was closed for an event, so we found another Indian spot right down the block. We were glad that we didn't end up at Aahar because Benares was excellent !! Huge selection of foods beyond your vindaloos masalas saags paneers and all of the common entrees that you see at Indian restaurants elsewhere. The lunch special is an AMAZINg deal for FiDi. The restaurant was busy but we were seated and served immediately. Delicious rice pudding, yummy bhaigan barta.Benares exceeded our expectation- we'll be back!

I've come here a few times for their brunch and it's an amazing deal. If you have a puls'd account, the deal is even better - I'd definitely recommend the boozy brunch. I've had the paneer pizza twice and it's chefs kiss, the flavors are immaculate and the naan is so soft but also well cooked. Although I wish the bottom was a little more firm. My friend had the chicken version of the pizza and he loved it just as much. I also tend to love Indian fusion food, but I've had their traditional North Indian food which is also great. A lot of Indian restaurants dilute their flavor with heavy cream and butter but this place is not like that. I only wish it was closer to my apartment so I could go more often. I like their food so much I'm catering them for my wedding!!Service is great and staff is friendly. I've only gone twice and both times it was a bit quite so ambiance was fine.

We dropped by here after an appointment downtown, really enjoyed the veg briyani and the paneer tikka. Really quick service and delicious (buttery) dishes!

Be the first to ReplyThe food and service was amazing.
Shared 2 appetizers, 1 vegetarian dish with rice and garlic naan and have a lot of leftovers. Will definitely come again
Be the first to ReplyMade reservations for Friday at 7pm.
When we arrived they didn't even check if we had reservations. The place was maybe half full. Around 8 it was packed. The food is very good and the portions are huge. I ended up taking home half of my entree. I think I would definitely go back here. The reason I'm not giving 4 or 5 stars is because service was incredibly slow. We had to wait about 15 minutes for anyone to take our drink order and after the food came out we didn't get a water refill for probably an hour. We also had to chase someone down to bring us a check. I suppose there are worse things, at least we were not at all rushed to leave and could enjoy our meal. I noticed that many other tables had extremely long waits for drinks and appetizers so I was glad we got there "early" and that our food came out pretty quickly once we ordered. Perhaps this is solely related to being understaffed which I understand. The phone was also ringing off the hook and there were a ton of delivery orders being prepared so that also probably affected the service for diners. It didn't ruin my experience. Food was really really good. I will definitely be back!

We stopped by for lunch on a chance visit and was so happy about our experience that we are talking about returning for it. We had lamb vindaloo, goat masala, lamb sausage kebab, a lentil soup, mango lassi, and chai, all of which were wonderful and still make my mouth watering as I'm typing. The lentil soup came with a cute heated pot and in its golden glory warmed me up from within on a windy winter day. The mango lassi was thick and rich but not too sweet, which is perfect for us. The lamb vindaloo had a lot of flavor and HEAT. We had the leftover bread and lentil (both were on the house as part of the lunch special) to go and they made another satisfying light dinner. My only grief as a huge chai person is that the rich and aromatic chai is not refillable. The owner/waitstaff were all authentically friendly.Edit: having tried four different Indian places near us for lunch special, I felt compelled to come back here and say that it's totally okay the chai is not refillable at Benares lol because the value and quality of lunch special they offer has no rival in the city. Period. I need to find another reason to visit them...

I came in with high expectations, especially since one of my friends visited last year and spoke very highly of this place. It's unfortunate that we both left somewhat disappointed; with her apologizing to our group saying it was much better the last time she came. It wasn't terrible, but overall, there was a lot left to be desired. We were a party of 6 and booked in advance. When arrived though, we were told a couple times (before even ordering) that due to a busy evening and high expected number of bookings, we were limited to 90 mins - with the clock starting as soon as our food arrived. I understand the reasoning behind this, but it would've been nice to have known this at the time of booking, as we were a large group and wanted to take our time. In the end, we only spent 1 hour at the restaurant, but felt obligated to rush our food as soon as it arrived - not the best experience. Food servings were generous in size and I particularly liked the garlic naan. Note, rice is included with the curry entrees, so no need to order separately (this is not clear on the menu). The Goat Dum Biriyani looked incredible when it arrived. I've not seen biriyani prepared like this before but it was certainly a pleasant surprise. As for the negatives - the staff had forgotten about our drinks orders, so they came around 5 mins after we had started eating our mains. We had two orders of Chicken Tikka Masla and one Butter Chicken which we realized at the end, they were mixed up (they served 2 butter chicken and 1 chicken tikka masala). We realized this as 'butter chicken' was spicier than the tikka masala. The vindaloo was interesting - very generous amounts of vegetable, but I found it to be too sour and not spicy or fragrant enough.I think this place has potential and am assuming the food/service was off as they were catering to a wedding party that night. Next time I'm in the area, I'd be willing to give it another shot!

I wish I could give more than 5 stars to this amazing restaurant. Not only is the food affordable but it's super yum in taste. Also the owner is very friendly and welcoming. We ordered 2 lunch special which comes with one appetiser, one entree with side of naan and rice. We got samosa, dahi papdi & paneer tikka (ordered separately) for appetiser and diwani handi, shahi paneer for entree . It came with rice and naan. The quantity is very generous even in lunch special that's why I am not sure if I would ever order from the menu. The food was amazing in taste, not too spicy and the place has good ambiance. Overall it's was a great experience. I would definitely go back when I come back to New York.

Absolute amazing Indian food - even recommended by Tinx! The dum biriyani is absolutely wonderful and so is the butter chicken. Highly recommend whether you're in or out of tribeca!
Be the first to ReplyI've tried three Indian places in FiDi and this is the best.
Only con of this place that isn't even really a con is the portion sizes are huge. You can easily make a meal and a half or two out of one dish with a nan on the side.Pros of this place:* Great food* Huge portion sizes* Great service* Spicy food is very spicyI recommend getting the lamb vindaloo if you like spicy food. That's my go to.
