High expectations left unsatisfied
Let me start by saying that i have been to some of the best restaurants all over the world and love to search out and eat greet food. I was so looking forward to eating here only to be disappointed. We ordered a coddled egg that cod have been great had it not been for undercooked beans which added the wrong type of texture.
We then ordered almost every pasta om the menu and the risotto. The cappelletti were good but the mushroom broth was like a salt lick. The rest of the pastas were meh...the ravioli with the beef had pasta that was too think and the meat inside had a syrange consistency. The quadrotti were the best of the bunch but that is not saying much. We also had the risotto which was perfectly cooked but had a VERY delicate flavor.
The main dishes were definitely better. The duck was very good though the radish on the bottom was meh. The veal tenderloin was very good but the sauce was outstanding! We also had the skate which was the only main that was forgettable. My husband's comment was that the capers were good...the skate was cooked well but the whole dish was one dimensional at best.
Dessert was okay. We had the pear sorbet which was very good but the chiffon cake was not great. We also had the gateau de noisette which was agian okay.
I really wanted to love this restaurant but alas i left very unsatisfied especially given what we spent for dinner.
An excellent dining experience
We recently had dinner at Benno and found the entire experience thoroughly agreeable: Great ambiance, great service, and great food. The main dining room is a gorgeous space, especially after dark. Several different staff members attended to us during dinner and all of them were extremely friendly, courteous, and informative. We ate our way through four courses: salads, pastas, entrées, and dessert, and the food was uniformly excellent. While some commenters have complained about the portion size, we did not find this to be the case. While the pasta dishes would be small for a main course, they are specifically listed separately from the entrées on the menu. And both the salads and the entrées were, if anything, generously portioned for a fine dining establishment. The presentation was uniformly excellent as well. Overall this was a great and memorable dining experience and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

3 of us had dinner on March 2. The food was good - what there was of it. The portions were surprisingly small. A main serving of duck breast and foie gras had about a one inch square portion of duck, and a slightly smaller one of foie gras. A pasta main was a bowl half filled with pasta and barely noticeable amount of ragu - and that was $36.
The special of Venison was very good.
The room is pretty and the service was pleasant, but considering the prices and the portion sizes, I would not go back.
Extremely expensive for an imperfect meal
Pros: lovely, elegant bar and dining room, v good cocktails; very professional service
Cons: in many cases, between four of us, food sounded wonderful but fell short. Portions are not large and several courses gets very very pricey fast. IMHO not worth it. I think trying to be a special occasion place but just not there food wise.
Wonderful Restaurant
My wife and I ate at Benno in January 2020.....The food was terrific, service, spot-on, and ambience delightful (not overdone, just relaxing, moderate sound, lovely floral/greens vase in middle of the room....Great for special occasion....Jonathon Benno was terrific at Lincoln in the past, and is great here in his own restaurant.

This is a non pretentious, fun place that carries amazing food. Yes, the pasta portions are small, they tell you not to consider pasta a main course. So I went for two pasta dishes! Carnaroli risotto and chestnut agnolotti. Both came with abundant black truffle. I am picky when it comes to truffle, but they held up to my standards. Their dishes are rich, almost a mixture of Italian and French cuisine. They brought a couple extra little plates that also were very good.
Tip, wine and several cocktails after, we spent about $200 each. Worth it.
I loved that the place didn’t pretend to be a starred restaurant but that the food actually met the standards. I liked it more than frenchette and other “hot” restaurants in nyc 2020
Good food but small portions
I sat at the bar for my solo dinner. The meal started with an amuse bousche, which was tasty, followed by a couple Parker House rolls with onion-laced butter, which were quite good. My first course was the risotto with black truffle. The amount of truffle shaved on the risotto was quite generous.
I got the duck entree. The foie gras was delicious although I would have liked the interior to be a bit warmer. The duck sausage was very good. The duck was good but a bit tough. The beans and root vegetables were very tasty.
Both of these courses were a bit small and I was still hungry. I decided to get their cheese course. They only have one choice for cheese. It was OK but it wasn't one I was thrilled by. I would have liked more choices. It was also a fairly hard cheese, which couldn't be spread on the crackers. Like the appetizer and entree, the cheese course was rather small. I ate the crackers with the small amount of jam provided. It wasn't nearly enough for all three crackers so I ate what remained by themselves. They were rather hard and difficult to chew.
My server, the bartender, was very knowledgeable about the food and quite attentive. The atmosphere at the bar was OK. I'd prefer a little higher light levels but I could read the menu. The noise level was low for a bar. They play music, which you could barely identify since the volume was so low.
The best meal of our two month visit. Deserves a second star.
Beautiful premises. Excellent service and creative, delicious food. No detail was spared. We look forward to returning soon. This place deserves a second star.

Wow! My wife and I had an incredible dinner at Benno. We were looking forward to this for a month and we were not disappointed. Service was excellent but not obsequious. I had a number of menu-related questions and the staff was incredibly patient with me. The risotto with fresh, shaved white truffles was the highlight of the meal. The rabbit agnolotti and ravioli were superb as were the squab dish, lamb and chocolate dessert. The sommelier helped me select a delicious Nebbiolo. Our only negative was the volume level of the jazz adjacent to the bar area. The musicians were great. It just made communicating with the staff a bit difficult for us. Will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyA lighter, more casual prix fixe but w excellent service
With a three piece jazz band in the corner and lively atmosphere, you won’t necessarily expect a classic seven course prix fixe but you should get it. While you can get the menu a la carte, the prix fixe is the best way to try many of the delicious pasta and seafood on the menu. Service is excellent and on par with any other Michelin Star restaurant. They also have great cocktails as well as a couple of non alcoholic cocktails- a trend I’m very happy about. At the end of the meal they give you a little loaf from the sister bakery to take home - another trend I’m happy about. 😋
