Disappointing
This experience was such a disappointment from start to finish. The hostess was completely miserable, which should have been an omen of things to come. Luckily the servers were all super friendly, so that was a plus. The food was mediocre at best. We sampled several apps, small plates, and desserts. We werenโt very hungry, so we skipped entree courses, which was probably to our advantage. We tried the roasted cauliflower and it was awful. It had a blatant freezer burn taste, was mushy, and the sauce for it was just totally off putting. The other sides were just average. The fois gras was tasty, but super dense and hard. The mackerel, parsnip veloute, and pork rillettes were the only good components of our meal. For dessert, we had the affogato and found a piece of lettuce in the bowl. We also tried the lemon gelato, which was so sour that it was totally inedible, and the chocolate gelato, which was improperly spun and loaded with ice crystals. Iโm strongly suggesting that someone- ANYONE- actually taste the recipes used for the dishes here. Seriously. No decent restaurant would knowingly put out dishes that are this unpleasant.

We had lunch at Benoit on Friday as part of our pre Valentineโs weekend in New York City. This was our first stop, because it is our favorite French restaurant in the city. It is very elegant, the type of place with starched white tablecloths and attentive service. Prices are not low, but pretty reasonable for midtown Manhattan. I had the steak tartar, which runs about $34.00. It was excellent. I ate it slowly, savoring every bite. My wife had the quenelles, which ran about $34.00. I tried some of hers. It was also excellent. For dessert, we ordered a soufflรฉ. I think it ran about $14.00. It was excellent. Prices are up on the wine list. My $50 bottle of red wine from the Madiran is no longer on the list. I chose a red from Corbieres instead. It was about $65. It was excellent. We have not had any disappointing bottles at Benoit.

Benoit NY is probably our favorite New York restaurant. Itโs my first choice when in town for business lunches or weekend visits with my wife. Itโs elegant, but not stuffy or intimidating. It has a bistro type bar up front. The bar might actually have a zinc counter. We were a party of four for lunch, two couples. I had the cassoulet, which runs about $44 and is excellent. We had a bottle of a Madiran wine, from the southwest region of France. It runs about $50, which is a great deal. As an FYI, the wine list is primarily French and has great depth, but it is priced accordingly. The service is good. The pricing is fair, given the current environment. Itโs a favorite. We have already made our next reservation.

A very nice French restaurant in NYC with a very comprehensive menu and wine cellar. The escargots, Le Cassoulet, Duck, wines and dessertsโฆ difficult to choose which one was the best! Nice cozy ambiance as well. Definitively a place to visit and have a nice dinner with your beloved one.
Be the first to Replyexquisite French restaurant; food & service
We came as a family group. The eservice was friendly, a bit formal, a friendly. We enjoyed the duck breast, streak tartar were especially good. The fish was very good. The French onion soup was excellent, told the best they have had. Wine, of course was fine as well. Not inexpensive, surely.

The service and ambience is very good and efficient. The menu has a good choice of French style cuisine which is executed well and perfectly cooked. There is a very large wine menu which is difficult to navigate. The wines were very expensive. We chose one at $85 which frankly tasted like a cheap bottle from a supermarket. Overall this restaurant is expensive and we didnโt feel that it was good value for money.

Recently had a quite disappointing meal at Benoit. Too bad, because it was the night of a special occasion. Chose Benoit because of the association with Alain Ducasse - it's a safe bet that he hasn't laid eyes on this place in years. Service was disjointed and distant. Annoyingly, however, they did try to move the pace of play along, which is certainly quite unlike what you expect from a true French restaurant. And, the menu was very limited, and the food itself was not that good, Bottom line, there are many better options in the city.

We chose Benoit because they had both chocolate soufflรฉs & escargot. The food was DELICIOUS! However, the restaurant was so busy, the service was slow. Our waiter (who we only saw 2 or 3 times) tended to us quickly when we arrived. The remainder of the service was done by others. We had to get someoneโs attention for drink refills, when we were ready for dessert & to get our ticket. We were there for 2-1/2 hours & shouldโve been there 1-1/2 hours. The food was extraordinarily good, but the service not so much. Shouldโve taken off 1 star for service, but the food was excellent.

Have been going to Benoit since we discovered its french local over 20 years ago. This last visit confirmed everything that Benoit does right. Service was efficient and attentive. Food was fresh (oysters) and perfectly prepared (foie, 1/2 chicken) and wine list varied and the French 75 cocktail was just perfect. Will keep going back!

I had lunch at Benoit with a friend last Wednesday. As usual, it was a ver6 good experience. We were also pleased to see the restaurant was pretty busy. Life is coming back to normal. The restaurant is light and airy. It has that bistro feeling, which is what they are going for. When you are seated they present two gougeres in a basket. We were asked what kind of water we liked. They are fine with tap water as your choice. We both moved directly into entrees. I ordered the duck, which was excellent. Substantial too. It ran about $38. It came with a large roasted artichoke heart. My friend ordered steak, which ran about $42. It came with a salad on the side. We ordered a bottle of red wine to go with lunch. They have a large wine list, focusing on French wines. The menu lists wine by the glass, but you want to check out the fill list. After studying the list I discovered a red from Southwest France that ran about $50. That is a good deal. We skipped dessert and asked for the check, but itโs worthwhile to point out they have chocolate soufflรฉ on the dessert menu. It runs about $20 and takes 15 minutes to prepare, but how many places offer soufflรฉs? Not many. They also have a selection of dessert wines by the glass. Are there negatives? Itโs on the expensive side, but there is a reputation factor to consider. Benoit is an Alain Ducasse restaurant. He has multiple restaurants around the world, several with Michelin stars. Hereโs something you need to know. They open at noon. Exactly at noon. You might be able to sit in the bar area and relax if you arrive at 11:50 AM, but no one gets seated until 12:00. Fo4 me, itโs an opportunity to study the wine list, which is presented on an iPad. Benoit is a favorite. I come back as often as I can.

Great French restaurant in New York. Excellent attending and an outstanding menu! Beautiful place. Great attending. Pricy
Be the first to ReplyEmbarrassing
I hosted a dinner for 6 and midway thru the 1st course was embarrassed at having subjected my guests to my choice. The service was poor. After dropping off the menus and pouring water, the servers ignored us for the next 15 minutes. I had to ask miscellaneous staff roaming the floor to have our server come to take drink orders. Simple math was a problem. We were pleased to be served gougeres as an amuse bouche, but they brought 5 for our group of 6 and pushed back when I asked to correct the mistake. The kitchen is in serious trouble. The first course was served in stages. After a prolonged wait, 3 of us were served. Again, after multiple requests the rest of us were finally brought our food after a long delay. After speaking to the manager, the main course was served to all of us at the same time. But, this is the team that canโt shoot straight. One of the entrees had an unlisted ingredient my guest was allergic to. The server assured us that they would bring the replacement without the allergen, but by the time the rest of us had finished, it hadnโt arrived and we cancelled the order. The food is good, not great and certainly not worth suffering thru the poor service and a kitchen not up to the task. There are many wonderful restaurant choices in midtown. This is not one of them.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent French Restaurant
I go to New York twice a year. To change things up I decided to only go to French restaurants and Benoit was perfection. I like all the small attentions such as the warm delicious gougรจres, the B embossed on the butter, the fact that the bread basket had 2 types of bread. The Norwegian eggs were served on toasted brioche, different but oh so delicious. The sommelier brought me the bottle of which my glass of wine was to come from. The table was cleaned between each course. I never felt rushed, the tables were well spaced. Absolute perfection !
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent experience, as usual
I recently met a friend for lunch at Benoit last week. We had a great t8me. It is always a good experience. Benoit opens at noon. Since I arrived early I needed to wait until they officially opened the dining room to be seated. No big deal. The wine list is on an iPad. It is extensive but easy to navigate. One drawback is the iPad signs out if you arenโt always active on it, so someone needs to sign you back on. I studied the listed beginning to end. Wines basically start about $65 but I found they had a red from Southwestern France at about $43. The wine steward said good things about it, so we ordered a bottle. It was fine. My friend ordered the skirt steak (about $37) and fries (about $11). He liked it a lot. I ordered the steak tartare ($33). It was excellent, as always. It came with a small salad. Service was attentive and friendly. Are there negatives? Prices are on the high side, but this is one of the top French restaurants in the City. It is a favorite of mine.

Met close friends for lunch at Benoit. It was an ideal setting for a casual extended lunch. The food was excellent. The service was attentive without be overbearing. We were not in a hurry and spent a couple of hours at lunch but never felt rushed.

Overcooked, tasteless food, poor ungracious service. Special birthday dinner. Benoit disappointed on every level.

The decor is elegant, the service attentive, and the food very good. The steak tartare was surprisingly chewy; pommes frites were crisp and tasty. Alas, no dessert as the curtain was ratehr early.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent experience
We really enjoyed ourselves at dinner here. First and foremost the service is impeccable--helpful, attentive and unobtrusive. Most of the food was excellent (escargots, steak au poivre, frites, half roasted chicken and the wine by glass lovely. Only thing we didn't care for was the tarte tatin for two, which unlike every other tarte tatin we've had, had some sort of gelatin over the apples instead of the usual caramelized apple top. Maybe this was a a sacrifice for efficiency's sake, but nevertheless it was disappointing. A wonderful experience overall, however, and we'll go back for sure.

Reservation #: 2110223018 March 13, 8 p.m. We hadn't visited this restaurant for 10 years and had good memories. We arrived 20 mns. early (silly us), ordered a cocktail (which never came) but were taken to our table in the main dining room at 8 sharp. Very pleasant welcome. The Paris-inspired dining room decoration is pleasant and comfortable--impeccable table cloths and napkins--elegant cutlery. The level of noise is very, very high (Americans are very loud and some unruly children were close by) but something could be done to muffle noises a bit (curtains? hangings?). I had fond memories of the cassoulet which I ordered and enjoyed very, very much--comfort food at its best. My wife had the canard ร l'orange revisited by the lady chef--excellent. I drank a glass of California merlot and my wife a glass of Chateauneuf du pape--both very good. Impeccable service. My wife's dessert I forget (it was OK but bland and unremarkable). The only problem was with my baba (my personal favourite). It was served very elegantly in a silver contraption but the biscuit was spongy like rubber and tasteless (I even wonder if the pastry chef doesn't use self-raising flour). Even worse was the Chantilly which had no vanilla pips and was horribly runny and tasteless. The armagnac instead of rum is eminently forgettable. Nothing like Mr. Ducasse's baba which is absolutely divine. When we talked to the manager, he was extremely nice and apologetic and said that they were severely understaffed because of Covid. To conclude: the food is excellent, the service is perfect, the location is fine, the prices are very reasonable considering the overall quality BUT I think the pastry chef must change his ways. All in all a pleasant dinner.
Be the first to ReplyNice evening ....outdoor meal
Loved the opportunity to sit outside ...with a heater . Waiter was excellent , very knowledgeable about wine. Escargot were good ... steak tartar above average ....against a very high standard.
Nice experience
A bit disappointing.
Waiter or chef, not sure of which, got the order wrong, which immediately brings down the ranking. And despite the three Michelin star owner, the food was so so at best. It seemed like we were being rushed in and out, too. Should have been a highlight of our trip to Manhattan, but wasn't. Crown Shy could show Benoit a thing or two about making the diner feel loved.
Not what we were expecting
Benoit occupies a beautiful space staffed by a super team of servers from maitre dโ to the bread server. They deserve the highest marks. The food however was not at all memorable. While very good with a solid menu, we expected more from such a storied establishment. We will go again but not a destination for a sublime experience.
Be the first to ReplyThe cassoulet was great!
I had lunch at Benoit NY with a friend on Thursday. As usual, it was excellent.
Benoit is a French bistro in midtown Manhattan. Itโs a Alain Ducasse restaurant. Everything is fine to a high standard.
We ordered a bottle of wine, looking to the Sommelier for guidance. She recommended a Saint Joseph, a Syrah based wine from the Northern Rhรดne. Iโm guessing it was about $90.00. It was fine.
I ordered the cassoulet ($42) which was excellent. In addition to beans, it was made with sausage and duck confit. The portion was enormous! I think cassoulet is a specialty at. Benoit. My friend has the striped bass, which he thought was very good.
Are there negatives? The three course set menu was a casualty of the pandemic. Put another way, it hasnโt come back yet. The food and service are good, but itโs expensive. Our two entrees plus a bottle of wine came to about $200 before tip. If you wanted the experience at a more modest price, their burger ($28) and a glass of wine ($15) would run about $55.00 a person after tax and tip.
I like Benoit a lot and keep coming back.
Not Terrible but a Huge Disappointment
We've enjoyed Alain Ducasse restaurants in Paris. So wouldn't it be a treat to go to one in New York City? Answer: No.
I noticed a review here on Tripadviser entitled "Divine Liver!" Well, there was no liver when we went even though it was on the menu.
Is the old test that a fork should stand up straight in a bowl of French onion soup valid for anything? If that test is valid, Benoit fails. The onion soup was watery, only a little cheese but mostly bread.
Benoit is most decidedly not "conversation friendly." Our small party had a hard time hearing each other. It's hard to say what it is about the acoustics that makes this place so noisy. But it was uncomfortable enough that we wanted to leave right after dessert...without lingering.
Final downtick: We ordered a bottle of sparkling water ($8). Yet with the expensive eau gazeuse still in our glasses, the wait stiff refilled our glasses with tap water.
Lovely dinner- fantastic service
Excellent experience. The service, the wine list, the food- all top notch. The bordelaise sauce on the hanger steak was fabulous- and my husband enjoyed the cassoulet- he actually felt the cassoulet at the NYC location was better than the dish he had at their Paris restaurant. Escargot and desserts (chocolate soufflรฉ) were amazing. If you like French bistros this is a must! And a shout out to everyone working there- absolutely made the experience one to remember!
