Definitely a hole in the wall that needs to be explored.
Friendly owner and incredibly unique flavors from west Africa / Sahara region. Outdoor dining only. Well deserved Michelin star
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food.
Take out only no dine in currently. The empanadas are exceptional. They are baked and not fried. The dipping sauce was to die for, i also ordered the rice with chicken and it was equally delicious.
Be the first to ReplyOmg so good.
Just finished my food and had to leave positive remarks. My friend eats here regularly so we ordered the djolof rice, and Afro-fusion bowl with veggies sweet plantains and jerk chicken, roti, and a beef empanada. It was sooo good, flavorful but not overpowering, made fresh and all of us were very pleasantly filled not overstuffed. Roti and empanada orders come with just one piece so make sure you order enough! Will definitely come back.

Calling it African at all is insulting!!! I ordered the bowl which was all chopped up. More like Jamaican Food went all wrong with diced plantains and baked beans with bad curry rice aka their version of joloff. I also ordered the fufu which is made of cassava with came with a. Teaspoon container of weak peri peri sauce. Last was the stew okra. This was the biggest disappointment!!! It had no pinion peppers, nothing just SLIMY okra sprinkled with curry powder that wasn't blended properly. I wish I took pics but it would definitely spoil your appetite. The only option was to throw it out and go get $2 city pizza.
Be the first to ReplyMy girlfriend has wanted to eat here for the past two years
My girlfriend has wanted to eat here for the past two years and we finally decided to make it a point to eat here. The food was really flavorful and spiced well. The establishment only offers takeout and street-side dining. When we walked up to the counter, we were informed that certain items that we had wanted were currently sold out. We arrived at the establishment about 15 minutes after they opened. We placed our orders and took a seat outside. Although they bring the food to your table, you do have to serve your own water from a water dispenser in the eating area and grab your own utensils and napkins. We decided to order the Passionfruit Lemonade and Watermelon juice. The drinks are served in a plastic bottle and secured with a cap. The Passionfruit Lemonade was pretty good, but I preferred the Watermelon juice. The Watermelon Juice was thicker and sweeter than what I was expecting. If you were undecided between those two drinks, I recommend the Watermelon Juice. After sitting down, we had to wait around 20 minutes for our food to come to the table. The establishment is small and judging by the food quality, the food is cooked upon ordering. Although the wait was longer than expected, I do not mind waiting for my food if I know the quality makes up for it. The first plate to come out were the plantains. I'm used to eating fried sweet plantains, so that's what I was expecting. The plantains come out cut up into tiny, bite-sized pieces (I'm used to slices). The plantains were good overall and had a bit of sweetness, but there was still some starchiness to the plantains. If they had allowed the plantains to ripen a bit more, the plate would have been perfect. The next dish to arrive at our table were the Mozambican Street Tacos. These tacos were amazing and possibly my favorite dish from what we ordered. The shrimp tacos were served on a roti-style bread. When I hear tacos, I usually expect them to come on a tortilla. However, the roti-style bread was a nice, unique surprise. The spices and seasonings were extremely flavorful and combined well with the sauce that was drizzled over the tacos. Overall, this was an amazing dish, but be aware, only one street taco (the roti is cut in half to make two) is served on the dish. After that, the Djollof came to the table next. I'm used to eating jollof that is basically rice cooked in a tomato sauce with some spices. However, at Berber Street Food, the Djollof is served with vegetables (and either chicken or beef). I opted for the steak, which helped to complete the meal. The plate also comes with a spicy sauce (which gave a nice kick to the rice, but is not overly spicy). The Djollof here is very flavorful and has a good amount of spice. I was tempted to order a second round to take home. Overall, Berber Street Food has amazing, flavorful food. The experience here is minimal service with long wait times. This is a place to check out if you like food with spices and flavor and you want a super laid back experience with no rush. I will be coming back here, since I am always in the area and making sure to order extra food to take home with me.

ChefD catered lunch for our employees today and wow! It was amazing. We ordered a selection of different items and all were fantastic - you could tell the ingredients were super fresh also. Communication was great and the order arrived on time. Our employee's feedback was first class! Thanks ChefD

The lady who works the register is the nastiest person on earth, you won the prize for scum of the earth! Extremely confrontational, nasty attitude and should not be working customer service or possibly at all. I came to pick up an order and immediately the nasty lady at the register very abrasively began shouting that food wasn't ready and they were not serving lunch yet, this was at 12:25pm and I had a 12:15-12:30 reservation. She would not let me speak and when I finally demanded to be able to speak she was beyond rude! If you can't keep your schedule time then make it later. If you can't be nice also just stay home instead of doing a disservice and being nasty towards people. I assure you this business will not be here long! Change your outlook and nasty ways then maybe you'll have a chance at success, until then plan to fail!
Be the first to ReplyVery yummy and great vegan options.
I recommend Djolof Fried Rice vegan style. Took about 15 minutes. Fun street food experience.

Wow. We could not have been happier with Berber Street Food as the caterer for our company holiday party! The food was excellent and ChefD was so easy to communicate with. She was available and helpful over email and phone. ย We were able to put together a vegan and non vegan menu. It was easy and seriously delicious. She's incredibly passionate and thoughtful. ย It shines through in the quality of the food and service. ย Thank you, thank you for your help with making our first in-person gathering so special. I can't wait to order again!

My wife and I changed up on this place and we got our minds blown. The food is amazing and plenty of options for vegans/vegetarians and gluten sensitive customers. We got the accara starter and black yam noodles entree with vegan chicken. Flavors, presentation, and taste were amazing.

WORST customer service ever seen in NYC!! -We ordered two Sahara Tajine, shawarma and empanadas. -45 min later our Sahara Tajine was given to another customer (who complained afterwards because they got the wrong order). The waiter didn't even bother to tell us about his mistake if we didn't inquire about our food!! -10 min later: guess what?!! there was NO MORE Sahara Tajine!!!!! ย so we had to order something else. The waiter then said that he will give us one FREE empanadas as a compensation, however: -20 min later: he shamelessly said that he had to charge us for that extra empanadas we got which costs $4 !!!! -also, the outdoor space is very dim during dinner time, we had to use our phone flashlights to see!!As a first-comer to this restaurant I am very disappointed with their service, I definitely do NOT recommend it although they have good food.

I was super excited to see that this place existed in Greenwich Village. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. The sausage in the Caravan sandwich was tasty, but other than that the toppings could have been more varied/had more flavor. I was in a hurry and did not realize that the fries were not included in my takeout order. I paid $2 for a side salad, and it was just a bunch of spring mix thrown in the box. I feel that there is a lot of potential here, but the execution was lacking.
Be the first to ReplyOrdered the Mozambican shrimp tacos (plural) for $12.
It came with one taco, with four pieces of shrimp. Deceptive! They need to fix the menu to just say "taco" not "tacos".

Be the first to ReplyThis review has little to do with the food as I was only
This review has little to do with the food as I was only allowed to order 2 very small empanadas that were 4 dollars a piece. They were good, but nothing really special. I traveled from Florida to visit my daughter in Staten Island. We took the ferry into Manhattan. I chose Berber Street food after googling street food, though it was misleading, it had a 4.7 rating and in addition to good food ratings, they also raved about the chef. The hours posted for that day were 12-9. We arrived @3:30. The restaurant is a hole in the wall where you read the menu outside and order inside the very tiny area and eat outside, which would have been great after we traveled an hour to get there. When I finally figured out how to order, I followed behind a single woman who ordered and sat down. I was told by the owner that they were closing for 20 minutes because they were backed up. She was not in any way concerned about me or my daughter. She was very unfriendly. There were a few things I could order, one was empanadas. I asked if I could order those and wait the 20 minutes. She reluctantly said yes. When the 20 minutes were just about up, she appeared outside to fraternize with the customers, ignoring my daughter and I. The waiter came over to speak to us and she said to him "Not them" We got up to leave. I stepped into the very tiny hole and told her I had never been so rudely treated at a restaurant in my life. We did nothing to deserve it.

Very good food, and while the restaurant is humble, it spares no expense in terms of the warm service it gives its customers. The Accara were crisp, yet light and full of flavor on the inside. Both sandwiches we got were also delicious.

My favorite meal I've had in New York! This place is such a great spot. Super flavorful, and prices are really decent, especially for the area. I'm vegan and gluten free and they had SO many options for me, I had the vegan GF jerk chicken. On the spicier side, but there are options for everyone. I'll definitely be back.

So I decided to try this for the first time, and decided to go with a somewhat safe dish based off the description. Jerk chicken, rice, veggies & black eyed peas. They were out of the chicken empanada so went with beef instead. ย ย The bowl gives you a lot of food for the price, compared to the empanada which was really small for $4. The broccoli was well seasoned but the spices they used for the jerk chicken was a little strange. The food is very automatic and sweet tasting. Doesn't really have that spicy kick to it. The empanada tastes more like a beef patty which is almost the same thing except for it to be considered a empanada the seasoning are once again off.
