Disappointed
I was very disappointed. Returning to this restaurant after three years I expected more. But standards have clearly fallen. I returned my steak twice ti the kitchen!! One overcooked and the other undercooked. This should not happen at such an establishment. With such prices. And they still charged me for the steak…Will not return soon

What's the catch? Old, dingy interior, Waaaaaay overpriced steaks with SERIOUSLY average flavor. My delmonico was a below "Choice" grade cut of meat. It was cooked as ordered, but I've had better tasting steak at Outback, not joking. I found myself taking bites of the over-salted onion strips with my steak to give it flavor. A steakhouse should stand on its steak quality, not an overabundance of buffet-quality sides as filler saying, "Well, it's invluded". A dry baked potato, green beans, onion strips, and an albeit tasty French onion soup couldn't cover for the chewy steak. I'm not impressed by a wine list that is 4000 pages thick with $4000 bottles and sits like a copy of the Bible on the table. It's almost that they leave this there to remind you that you're in a fancy place. Get it out of there after meals are ordered. Servers are well trained, but it is as you would expect, nothing more. Certainly not worth the price you pay. Not that they can pick the clientele, but low-class guests next to us using cellphones on SPEAKER during dinner?!?!? Seriously, have a sense of decorum and maintain the atmosphere for all guests. I guess we've paid the "Bern's Tax" to say we've been there. It was a $400 lesson for me and my wife. Seriously, forget the hype and go elsewhere.

My husband and I went for our anniversary and were really looking forward to the “experience”. Not what we expected and will not go back. There are too many really good steakhouses in this area to fall victim to the Bern’s hype. Our server, Kevin, was excellent, but the food was just okay. My husband had the t-bone, I had the filet - I’ve definitely had better steak at places like Salt Rock or Ruth’s Chris. We were seated in a large room with wall-to-wall people that gave me Army chow hall vibes- loud and crowded. We were asked twice if we were celebrating anything special - which we were - our 23rd anniversary, but the only recognition that came from it was in the dessert room. After we ordered and received our desserts, we were brought a vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and a candle 😂!! I said our 23rd anniversary, not our 5th birthday! Why does a place like Berns even HAVE rainbow sprinkles? Like, “Happy Birthaversary!”. What would have been better, instead of a third dessert after already having dinner, is if they just embellished the desserts we already ordered with “Happy Anniversary” written in chocolate sauce or something. It was very much not special. Ruth’s Chris does special celebrations RIGHT! Overall super disappointed. Perhaps if we were in one of the other less crowded rooms our experience would have been different, but it’s a “one and done” for us.

We have been here several times and I’ve always been thoroughly impressed. I know a good steak, this is a great Steak! We shared the porter House Which included A French onion soup and a wonderful salad with homemade blue cheese As well as a baked potato and onion straws. The desert upstairs was amazing we had the crème brûlée and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The wine list is incredible as everyone knows. A server Josh was spot on his recommendations

I am sure I am at least the one millionth person to give Berns a 5 star review. The food was excellent, maybe even a bit too much food. Service was outstanding and the atmosphere was unique. They have come up with something truly different and extraordinary. It’s time for Michelin to come to Tampa and give this restaurant its well deserved 3 stars.

We made a reservation in December for a February seating. We arrived early but were forced to pay for valet parking as there are hardly any parking spaces at this establishment...certainly nothing close to the number of people that can be served at any given time. Our seating was over a half hour late (so much for reservations two months in advance). The service was excellent, but the steak was overpriced and fatty. I have had better steaks in the likes of a Texas Roadhouse. Overall, the price paid for our meals crested $200. I would have expected something exemplary for that amount of money, but was disappointed to say the least. I don't think I will ever be going back...certainly not in this lifetime.

I feel like the 60 day out reservation calendar is to make people think this place is really worth dining at. We’ve heard such great things about the Bern’s “experience,” but our experience was sorry to say, PISS POOR! From the moment we checked in and were told we had to climb 2 flights of steep steps for a restroom, I was not thrilled since wearing heels. Then, we were led to one of their small dining rooms and were sat next to a table of about 15 frat guys. They were drunk, loud, and disruptive. Not what I am looking for when paying for a meal of this type. Luckily upon request, the hostess reseated us in another small dining room. Still quite loud and bright with no ambiance, but we thought “Ok. Things will get better from here on.” NOPE. We ordered the 100 day aged Delmonico and it was not only tasteless but inedible. There was so much gristle in it, I had to spit it out into my napkin and wait for our waiter to arrive to send it back. He ordered me another cut after asking if I was used to eating ribeyes and should he order me a leaner cut of beef. (WTH? So condescending!) I told him that fat had nothing to do with it. It was all gristle. Well, the second one came after everyone had finished eating and looked totally different. Better because it was tender, but still completely flavorless. I ate a couple bites and that was enough for me. My husband had a filet, his go to steak. He said his was sub par also with no seasoning or flavor at all. Worst he’s had in a restaurant. We were so excited to try Bern’s and thought we’d leave thinking it was our new 1st or 2nd fave prime steak house. Instead, it fell not only last place but in the “we will never go there again” list. Save your money and go somewhere else. Just about any other choice would be better.

When telling people how much our bill was with tip they ask if the food is worth it. I tell them that no food is worth that price, but the entire Berns experience is what makes it worth it. Yes, the food was absolutely amazing. But, it was everything else. Let me start by saying you need to make reservations 2-3 months in advance unless you get lucky with a day of cancelation there are no walk-up tables available. The staff here was unbelievable. Everyone was so nice. I felt, if I asked my server to do a dance for me he would have. He was so polite and knowledgeable and attended to our every need. Whatever questions we had we never felt as if we were a bother and were not made to feel stupid. The place was exquisite, very clean, and beautifully decorated. You never feel rushed. I hate places where I have barely had time to open my menu and they are wanting me to order. Not here, take all the time you want or need. This is fine dining at its best. As I said the food was amazing. We had the carpaccio as an appetizer and it was so good. We couldn't decide on a salad dressing and our server brought out several for us to sample. The main course, Delmonico steak, and surf and turf were so good. I have never had fried lobster and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. After dinner, the server (Kevin) took us to the dessert room. On the way, he stopped by the kitchen windows and explained everything going on there. Even though the place was so busy we were made to feel like we were their only customers. The dessert room was something else. You sit in your own private wine cask. We had trouble deciding on which desserts we wanted as everything sounded amazing. And of course, it was. If we lived closer we would definitely be going back. I am very happy I have finally been able to visit this establishment and had an amazing experience.

One of the finest restaurant experiences we have ever had! From the service and the assistances of our server, thru the desert room, plus the wine and each step we made, guaranteed an excellent experience. We visited here on Valentine’s Day 2023. Reservations were made by our Daughter in Law, 3 months in advance. There was 6 of us and the service could not have been better. We ordered steaks and lamb chops along with a generous supply of side dishes. The meals were cooked to perfection to maximize the flavor of each meal. We then visited the dessert room upstairs and our dessert choices were varied but again, delicious. This restaurant is a must visit when you have the opportunity. Reservation’s are difficult to obtain but with some advanced planning can,be obtained on line. Loved this place and will definitely return as the opportunity arises.

first of all there reservation system is HORRENDOUS. I emailed with no luck, then waited on reservation portal exactly 60 days out and got in before the clock struck midnight. Guess what? Only ONE reservation for 10:45 pm... seems a bit rigged to me? Anyways the food was mediocre at best you can find a better steak and experience at Charleys down the road.

We have been going to Bern's since the early 90's - it was always a special place for dinner and worth driving all the way from Brooksville, FL to Tampa. Fast forward to this year and it has become it's own worst enemy. You cannot make a reservation unless you are sitting at your computer the second the reservation system opens for the day you want - then you are still not necessarily going to get anything except 5PM or 9PM. I don't know how many regulars just re-reserve while they are there, or if someone is just quicker on the draw, but getting in has become a nightmare. The last time we did manage to get there was with guests whom we had promised a memorable meal. It was memorable all right. We didn't get seated until 40 minutes past our reservation time, and felt rushed throughout the entire meal. We went to the dessert room and sat and waited for the wait person. And sat, and sat. When we did get someone to take our order, she disappeared again for another half-hour. What is going on over there? Can you not get enough help? You used to have to train to be a Bern's waiter - the "rookies" wore a different colored jacket. It was a matter of pride to become a full fledged waiter there. We are not going back, my next birthday will be at Charley's.
Be the first to ReplyBERNS IS OVERHYPED AND UNDERWHELMING
We went to Berns with such high expectations but came away wanting more. The building is tired and needs renovations, but the main issue was that it was freezing inside, especially in the room where we were served which made it an unpleasant experience, The food was good but not spectacular but the service was second to none!. The finale, which is the dessert room was underwhelming, the five of us were led to a very small room with a long table and uncomfortable seating with bright lights and the desserts were just very average, and yet again, the room was really cold! Like I said we came with high expectations but left with a lesser opinion.

What to say about this restaurant, the service was good, some of the food was great, but for two people out of four, the main event namely the steaks were not good. My own steak was tough and tasteless and my companions was to. We both had different cuts, an aged strip steak and a fillet.

If you like first-class service, which is hard to find in today's world, this is the place to go. Naturally, the cost reflects the service.

We were seated promptly on time at 745pm. However, that is where it started to go down hill. Our server, wearing a silver tie, was no where to be found for at least 15 minutes. He took our drink orders. Drinks came. Waiting.....He finally came back to take our dinner orders approx 830pm. Party of 4, we ordered two filet dinners, 1 chateaubriand and one halibut dinner. Food was delicious as always. What was missing....was the normal impeccable service you get from not 1 but usually 2 servers at Bern's. Our server was clearly spending all his time with another party of 10 he had going, at least that is what the host said, that I flagged down to get service. We were never offered a refill on our drinks. We were finished eating for at least 20 minutes before I had flagged her to get carry out and checkout....we still had to go upstairs for dessert and it was now 10pm. The worst part...he never apologized for making us wait so much throughout the night. Sorry Bern's but you need to do better. Service has slipped dramatically. Food and presentation is still great though! I will still be back.
Be the first to ReplyThis is what dining should be-this was not just dinner it was an experience
We visited Bern's at the recommendation of many and to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays in our group. Make a reservation and dress for the occasion! From the moment we valeted the car we knew this was going to be a memorable and special evening. We were greeted and taken to our table and made to feel welcome immediately. The cocktail menu was diverse and interesting, there were mocktails for the kids in our group. We ordered a bottle of wine from the gigantic and incredible wine list that was great and you can find great bottles in all price ranges. The entire meal was spectacular, the heirloom tomato salad is a MUST - it was delicious. The filets were also exceptional, but the best was the chateaubriand - it was incredible. The french onion soup is the best I have had in my half century of living and eating french onion soup. After dinner, our server had made a reservation for us in the dessert room, which should not be missed. Espressos, bananas foster, and gluten free and dairy free options are also available!

An amazing experience!! The dinner, the dessert, the service (thank you, Grant for being the Best waiter) was beyond our expectations!!! The only regret was not asking what was in the green apple martini we had pre dinner. It was amazing!!!

The experience at Bern's underwhelmed me. Since moving to the Tampa Bay area, we have repeatedly heard that this restaurant is the best in the region. We made reservations months in advance as required and awaited this wonderful experience. We were seated promptly and received a great explanation of the menu. As soon as we told the waiter that we couldn't drink alcohol, we noticed that we would not get the same service as those around us who were ordering expensive wines and cocktails. We ordered steaks that included onion soup, salad, baked potatoes, and onion rings. The onion soup and salad were good and served in a timely fashion. The waiter delivered the steaks, and it took more than ten minutes for the gorgonzola sauce to arrive and additional time to receive the baked potatoes. Coordinating the arrival of all meal components is a minimum service level that I have come to expect, and much less expensive restaurants have figured out how to do this. The steaks were of excellent quality, but the experience was marred by not having them cooked as requested and not receiving the accompanying sauce until the waiter had a lengthy discussion with patrons at another table. After the meal, we went to the dessert room and were less than impressed again. The piano player stopped playing as soon as we sat down, and the selections that the waitress said were outstanding were mediocre. I doubt that we will be returning since, in my opinion, there are much better steak places in the area.

You always hear hype on certain restaurants and wonder if they are paying for it. I have been to many of the top steakhouses in the US including multiple visits to St. Elmo's in Indianapolis. Berns is equal to any of the top ones and surpasses most due to their ambiance. The steaks were perfect and not a la carte like everywhere else. Everything is included. The French onion soup is as good as you will ever have, the salad was fresh not sitting in a fridge. Also, a potato and fresh vegetable were included. To top it off they have a whole dessert floor with homemade desserts. The experience is beyond what I expected. A special thanks to Vanessa and Jesse for spectacular service.

There’s a reason this place is always booked and hard to get into. Ambiance abounds from the lighting and carpets to the art decor scattered around. A maze of larger and intimate dining rooms. Service provided by knowledgeable and attentive staff makes for an ultimate experience. Excellent choice options of appetizers, salads, soups and of course steaks (seafood and alternates available as well.) The appetizer bacon slab was very well done, but a tad bit sweet with the cherry glaze. French onion soup and salad also done to perfection (included with steak meal orders). The steaks were perfect, hot and perfectly charred on the outside. Accompanying green beans and onion straws also done right. We’ll see desserts in my next post as this is a separate category.

Not quite right. We were immediately pointed to the steak page where everything is included ? So odd . Expected a La carte

There is nothing more to say other than excellent. This time we didn’t have reservations but were visiting Tampa and staying across the street. So we tried over and over to get a table through open table but could not get one. We got to the restaurant at 5:20 to stand outside but we were too late to get a seat at the bar. So we went the next night at 4:10 and waited in 91 degree heat. They opened the doors for us at 4:45 and we got our preferred seats at the bar and had a fabulous dinner. The. We went to the dessert room and had a scrumptious dessert. I love Berns.

This was a unique yet odd experience. The place itself was not what I envisioned. It's almost like eating in a dungeon. I pictured it more romantic. The server was really nice but the script was so dull. Overall he did a great job.
I expected the steak to be better. The sides were the star of the dish in my opinion. It was cooked properly and the flavors were alright. It was a little boring for my liking. The steak I would have given a three star by itself.
The French Onion soup was to die for. It is my new favorite and I'm extremely picky on it. The cheese was sensational. It was so rich but wasn't overbearing. So so good.
The salad was fresh and creative. All of the ingredients paired well together and the ranch was delicious. The red peppers were what brought it all together.
The baked potato was excellent. It was fresh and soft. The toppings were plentiful. The skin was actually edible without being dry or overly salty.
The green beans were prepared perfect. It was lightly salted and paired well with the steak. They brightened up the plate as well.
They called them onion rings but I call them to book straws. They were not needed and really didn't work well with anything. They were just kind of in the way.
The dessert room was exceptionally creepy haha. The layout was odd and it felt like a haunted prison almost. We ordered two and haven't tried them yet. Kenny the pianist was amazing! He is incredibly talented and I requested Queen. Freddie would have been proud! ❤️
I'm glad we got to experience the Tampa tradition here but it wasn't impressive enough to return. I just hoped and expected more after going thru so many great reviews. The price of admission was not for us.
Met all the hype!
This was definitely worth the hype. The staff is wonderful. The decor is eclectic and fitting. The wine list is insane. The food was spectacular from start to finish. But the highlight is the steak. We had the Château Briand and it was the best prepared, most tasty piece of meat that we have ever had. We were lucky to get into the restaurant. The way to do it if you don’t have a reservation is to show up no later than 4:30 PM and wait outside for them to open at 5 PM. And you might get a bar seat or lounge see. There aren’t many of either. Good luck getting a reservation.
