It took us six weeks to get a reservation at Berns
It took us six weeks to get a reservation at Berns Steakhouse. The service was terrible. It took our waiter thirty minutes to uncork our wine bottle. It was after we complained to the manager that he finally opened our bottle. The wedge salad was a quarter of the lettuce with very little dressing. The baked potato was dry and burnt. The steak was delicious. Our experience at Berns was definitely not worth the six week wait. The ambience was not what we expected. Dissatisfied and Disappointed
Be the first to ReplyWhat's the catch? Old, dingy interior, Waaaaaay
What's the catch? Old, dingy interior, Waaaaaay overpriced steaks with SERIOUSLY average flavor. My delmonico was a below "Choice" grade cut of meat. It was cooked as ordered, but I've had better tasting steak at Outback, not joking. I found myself taking bites of the over-salted onion strips with my steak to give it flavor. A steakhouse should stand on its steak quality, not an overabundance of buffet-quality sides as filler saying, "Well, it's invluded". A dry baked potato, green beans, onion strips, and an albeit tasty French onion soup couldn't cover for the chewy steak. I'm not impressed by a wine list that is 4000 pages thick with $4000 bottles and sits like a copy of the Bible on the table. It's almost that they leave this there to remind you that you're in a fancy place. Get it out of there after meals are ordered. Servers are well trained, but it is as you would expect, nothing more. Certainly not worth the price you pay. Not that they can pick the clientele, but low-class guests next to us using cellphones on SPEAKER during dinner?!?!? Seriously, have a sense of decorum and maintain the atmosphere for all guests. I guess we've paid the "Bern's Tax" to say we've been there. It was a $400 lesson for me and my wife. Seriously, forget the hype and go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyWe've lived in Tampa for 5 years now and finally made it to
We've lived in Tampa for 5 years now and finally made it to Berns. The historic charm is part of the experience. The moody entrance is impactful but the individual dining rooms were a bit boring and too lighted for my liking. Some dim lighting and candles would be a lovely touch. They are renovating this summer and...we'll, its time :) The service was great, these people are true professionals! Our server did not crumb the table like you expect from a white table cloth dining room. The wine selection is impressive. Every steak entree comes with onion rings, green beans, loaded baked potato, French onion soup AND salad. It was a TON of meh food that is just filler, more buffet quality. Not quality sides like you would expect from a high end steakhouse. I ordered the Filet and my husband had the Delmonico. The cut was good and it was cooked to perfection, which is the expectation at a restaurant of this caliber, but it was incredibly bland. It was under seasoned (not sure it was even seasoned at all) so I was taking bites of my onion rings (which are more like rubbery onion straws) with my steak to enhance the flavor. Our apps were the Stone Crab claws and oysters. The oysters were small and the claws seemed previously frozen. Still delicious but not fresh like you would expect in Florida, in Stone Crab season. Our bill was $350 and we only had two cocktails. Then the dessert room. The ambiance is worth the hype and it's a unique experience unto itself. After our dinner experience we opted not to spend another $40 for two desserts and ordered some dessert cocktails - espresso martini and an old fashion. Our server seemed annoyed that we only ordered drinks. Or maybe she was just tired because it was close to midnight by the time we wrapped up our 9pm dinner reservation ( the only time avail). So we cashed out our $40 dessert room tab and called it a night. All in, it was a $400 average dinner. If you've never been to a steakhouse before, you'll be impressed. If your palate has tried other high end steakhouses, you will be disappointed with the steaks. They are far from exceptional. Would not shy away from ordering something other than steak here. I appreciate this place for what it is: a Tampa tradition. We've checked the box but it was a one and done for us. If you're looking for a unique experience and you're willing to pay alot of $$ for it, this is your place. If you're looking for an exceptional STEAK, go elsewhere. Sadly this is now just an overpriced tourist trap, and their online booking system has created a false demand. And for the love of God, PLEASE don't be an idiot and pay hundreds of dollars for a reservation. (We certainly did not).
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant and a must for Tampa dining.
The location is not great and you have to valet or get an Uber since parking is a bit complicated. Really old building with an old vibe and kind of tacky with decor but the food is amazing. Food:French Onion Soup Au Gratin - Ok presentation, amazing taste and portion. Get it NOW!House Salad with Macadamia Vanilla Bean Dressing - Presentation needs love, the ingredients are fresh and delicious. Try it NOW!30oz Dry-Aged Porterhouse - Ok presentation, the steak is absolutely delicious. It arrives in perfect temperature and exactly how you ask to be prepared. (Medium Rare - off course lol) The steak arrives with a side of bake potato, green beans and onion rings thin sliced. The green beans are blah and onion rings need less batter but they are included with your main. Flavor Cafe con Leche Salted Caramel - Delicious and complements your desert at the iconic dessert room. Macadamia Nut Sundae - Great presentation, this is a must for Berns desserts. Took a million years to make it perfect and trust me they really got it. No words just get it NOW! Serivce:Staff has been working at this restaurant for many years and it take 3 years for a server to make it to your table to serve you. Great service with fast and efficient food delivery. It feels like they want you to come back. Ambience:It's an old place with lots of old vibes and smells. Their decor is tacky and feels like an old castle but who cares the food is absolutely amazing. If you are lucky to get a reservation then get ready to enjoy a truly good restaurant. The price is fair and food is good which is always a perfect combo to come back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and atmosphere.
Will be bringing the family back here to check it out. Check out the dessert restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyI really enjoyed the steak, environment, and old fashions.
It's nice it has stayed a popular spot throughout the years. Check the dessert room and wine cellar.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was absolutely amazing and so was the service.
The waiter came up and greeted our table promptly and got our drink orders in. Once we ordered our steaks, the soup and salad came out then the main course. We finished the night in the dessert room - perfect ambience to end the night and Valentine's Day!
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful establishment with a long history of fine
A wonderful establishment with a long history of fine dining in Tampa. We were lucky to get in after a long wait on the list. Before you go make sure you realize you are paying to eat at an institution in Tampa; don't freak out at sticker shock and avoid fine dining if you're not willing to pay for it.The crab... absolutely perfect! The spinach escargot was good but the spinach was overpowering. Still a delicious dish, just not well suited to my palate. The Delmonico was cooked to perfection, French onion soup was delightful, baked potato was watery, salad was... just a salad. Overall, as good as the food was my hair wasn't blown back. When compared to another five-star in Tampa, I'd rather stick to the more modern, open, and engaging atmosphere of the other restaurant. Definitely a must try. Just because my preference is another restaurant doesn't mean it this one won't knock your socks off.
Be the first to ReplyI have been to Bern's many times, dating back to the 1970's.
Not much has changed except it has turned Into a tourist trap. The decor is as old as the restaurant. Some may like that. I knew Bern Laxer personally and he was a creative guy that loved wine and sharing it with his patrons at a great value. Boy, has that changed. You can still find some good value wines on the list, but Buyer Beware. We had a party of 6. We ordered 2 nice older vintage wines at fair prices. Someone in our party requested Caymus (not Special Selection). I ordered it without looking at the list. We received a current 2020 vintage. When the bill came I had sticker shock with the $250 price. I have never seen it on a restaurant wine list over $200. I thought surely this was a mistake, especially at a restaurant that had a reputation for value wine pricing. The manager came over and schooled me on restaurant wine markups in a condescending way. He point out that it is the price on the list. Granted, my bad for not checking the list. Bern's, Your Bad for price gouging. I hate writing off this restaurant, but I do not like getting ripped off. It is not the money. It is the principle. I won't go back.

Peter Lugers move over!! Sorry Peter! I have loved you a long time, but you don't even come close to Berns Steakhouse in Tampa Bay Fl. I happened to Stumble in on a fluke never hearing of it before while in Tampa to pick up a car I had found on line ! We Started with the 'house' Bourbon Old Fashion. (The simple syrup they use is a house secret, I couldn't bribe anyone to reveal, AND I TRIED) ) By the time I ordered the second I knew I found the end of the rainbow! We salivated with the most amazing Tartare, just a light appetizer while drinking, and waiting for our table. It was amazing, seasoned with capers and spices. It didn't come close to perfection. It past it by light years! , then we started to eat. Needless to say I had a Kobe steak I will admit it's pricey, but there is no place you will experience what this should taste like or your money can buy better than Berns!, I could go on for pages to tell you about the crรจme brรปlรฉe, which was amazing, and the appetizers that we had along the way as we finished the third old fashion concluding with a 40 year old tawny port. This was an epicurean delight if you have to save for a year and happen to be in Tampa Bay Florida or maybe just be able to afford it, It is the best I have ever eaten or experienced in at least four continents where I have had this, Including Japan! Please don't think me a snob. It was quite pricy, and sadly have to admit, not something I can afford to do as much as I would like. However I know somewhere down the roadI WILL DO THIS AGAIN, THERE !If I find myself within 100 miles of Tampa Bay Florida.
Be the first to ReplyBern's does disappoint! I will say that it was a Sunday
Bern's does disappoint! I will say that it was a Sunday evening (5:45pm reservation) and maybe the staff was tired but from a first experience - I wouldn't recommend it and don't know if I would go back. No one at this establishment seems happy or seems to like working there - from the parking lot staff, to hosts to watiers. No one had smiles or happy they worked there. Just keep the food and people moving -- like it was assemble line -- but make sure you have a coat and tie on which I didn't but dressed nicely as requested. It was one of the worst steaks I had in years and I dine at top steaks houses around country (and have been to most all of the Top 10 Steakhouses in Country) - regulary dine at top steak chains of Fleming, Ruth Chris, Del Frisco, Capital Grill, Ringside etc - usually one of them once a month. I had a Strip and my wife had a Filet. Both were not tender and favor was isn't anything special. I am usual buyer from Omaha and Kansas City steak companies via shipping and the are 100% better --They make a big deal out of dessert room upstairs -- nothing special there in my opinion for the price and time to wait for another table -- I was not upset at pricing and seemed good value but the food wasn't. Mac and Cheese was horrible (highly recommend from the waiter) -- I had better mac and cheese from Wawa.It was highly recommended by wife's uncle who was in sales and came to Tampa at least twice a year for years. He is a true Texan (born and lived his whole life) so said it was the best steaks he ever had but hadn't been there in 20 plus years. Sad if this place is going way of other places of its times... I will say I was impressed with number packed (as I waited 25 mins to get my Caddy back after paying $8 which seemed strange to me when most places I go it is comped) and keep coming on a Sunday night -- maybe my experience as off night -- or the Tampa market just doesn't have much competition... or just been there so you go...
Be the first to ReplyFood was good, however service was very sub par.
My husband and I went there on our honeymoon to celebrate getting married and we're very disappointed in the experience. We were originally planning to go to the dessert room after dinner, but were so turned off by the experience that we decided to just leave. It took an hour to even get soups, server was often nowhere to be found and the table that arrived 20 minutes after us, but was served by the same server was cleared and finished significantly before us. A huge let down overall.
Be the first to ReplyI wasn't overrall impressed with the Steak, I thought it
I wasn't overrall impressed with the Steak, I thought it was good, but not great, figured it would make it to the top 10 steak houses I have been to, otherwise service and ambiance great, and desert room is pretty awesome
Be the first to ReplyBerns is the quintessential Tampa steak house.
I came here with family for a birthday and it was amazing. I ordered steak and it was one of the best I've ever had. The service is impeccable and the ambiance is elevated and reserved. The food is great but always leave room for dessert because the dessert room is an experience. I can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is the real deal.
Only downside is that it comes with a major price tag; but you would know that going in to dinner here most likely. Can be difficult to get a reservation so ensure you do so early.
Be the first to ReplyThe ultimate steakhouse experience.
Decor and ambiance of the place is beautiful, service is top tier, and food is incredible. Meat is so tender cooked just perfectly. Sides were good but I thought a couple were just ok - mac n cheese was average and French onion soup was a bit salty. But overall, this place is amazing and definitely a great place to book for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplySimple, best steak house I've ever been to.
I highly recommend if you're planning a trip to Tampa Bern's is a must.
Be the first to ReplyI've visited a few times and I've never been disappointed
I've visited a few times and I've never been disappointed in the food's flavor and quality. The service has always been great. The best parts for me are the steaks and the dessert room upstairs.
Be the first to ReplyWow, where do I begin?! This place used to be amazing! Not
Wow, where do I begin?! This place used to be amazing! Not only the food but the experience, the mannerisms of the waiters, and just the way things we're done. Last night my family and I took my girlfriend there for the first time, we RAVED about this place and we were so disappointed! Our waiter had a runny nose and kept sniffling in our ears. We even saw it drop from his nose while serving our food. The huffing and puffing from him was amazing like we were annoying him. The food isn't what it used to be. They got a new chef and he changed EVERYTHING! The menu is smaller, the food we raved about and part of the experience is gone. The dessert room too! The waitress we had was soooo unprofessional. We had problems with drinks downstairs in the dining room and issues with food in the dessert room. We even complained and you would think they would be like "I'm sorry about that" but no instead the manager said okay and walked away. My grandma wasn't a fan of her dessert and the waitress goes "oh she really didn't like it?" Laughs and still charges us. I'm truly disappointed and not satisfied at all. Two years ago I'd give this five stars but y'all really went to the bottom of my list and I hate saying that. I miss the old experience. I don't see us coming back for a while and that's a shame. For the price we pay the experience could've been better.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a great time and the chateaubriand was crispy on the
We had a great time and the chateaubriand was crispy on the outside but extremly soft on the inside which was delicious as always. That said, I was really disappointed to see the vicyhyssoise soup and the banana bread pudding were both removed from the menu. The vichyssoise will be greatly missed and I'm sad it is no longer available.
Be the first to ReplyBerns Steak house most definitely lives up to the hype !
Berns Steak house most definitely lives up to the hype ! This was not just a steak house it was an experience!! The service was just amazing and the food is delicious ! After dinner i highly recommend the desert room which is in another part of the restaurant ! Deserts were spectacular!! Our server for the dinner part of our experience was Tyler and i highly highly recommend requesting he serve you !!
Be the first to ReplyBern's steakhouse is probably the best restaurant I have
Bern's steakhouse is probably the best restaurant I have been to. With the proper reservation (which is a once in a lifetime chance, I was lucky) you can get up to a dessert room and have the best steak of your life! You start of with a bowl of French onion soup, then a salad, and finally steak. The steak comes with a baked potato and onion strings with the vegetable of the evening. It is not only the food that is amazing, the scenery is very classy, they have portraits of French and Russian nobles, with a route used to deliver food from a century ago! After your main courses is the dessert room (a pic is attached to the dessert I had). All in all this is the best steakhouse I have been to and maybe the best restaurant I have been to. Maybe it will be yours too!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is ok.
For the price and the need to have to make reservations months in advance, I don't really get the hype. Have definitely had better steaks at a better price elsewhere. The dessert room was also ok. Another area where I just don't think it lives up to the hype. I guess I'm glad I went once but I don't need to go again.
Be the first to ReplyWell. We have been coming to Bern's for over 18 years.
Well. We have been coming to Bern's for over 18 years. It used to be our favorite because of the extras. The oysters were the best because of the 4 different sauces including the jalepelรฑo grenache, the horseradish cream & the shallot vinaigrette. The cheese cracker amuze bouche was always fantastic & the crispy mushrooms always made Bern's different & special (not to mention the wine list and service of course).None of that exists anymore, except for the wine list. The oysters & service was pedestrian & no amuze. The steak & potatoes were still great, but they were missing their teammates.Sadly, Bern's is no longer our favorite & out of our top 10 in Tampa. You have lost your way. Callus when you get your mojo back.
Be the first to ReplyIf your looking for an American classic, you cannot beat
If your looking for an American classic, you cannot beat Bern's! Excellent food, wine, and make sure to save room for dessert to get the overall full experience. The tours (wine cellar, kitchen) are still closed from COVID restrictions, so that's too bad... and the service seemed a bit "matter of fact" and rushed (no real dialogue/discussion regarding recommendations- just "what do you like" followed by "then have this"... no alternative this or that or even this. I expected more from the service honestly, which drops it a star).
