Incredible filet au poivre (done perfectly rare), scallops
Incredible filet au poivre (done perfectly rare), scallops that blew our mind, the best bread we ate in Paris, and two amazing desserts: a paris-brest and some really outstanding cheeses. The only thing I'd sub out next time was a wild boar stew which was good but there were dishes on other tables that looked better.
Be the first to ReplyMy family and I ate there while in Paris in September 2023.
It was a beautiful restaurant, but very packed with people. There were six of us and everyone enjoyed their food. We did think it was overpriced, but it still was a wonderful night. One note, we felt that our server was very hurried, mainly because I think she had a lot of tables to take care of. It was a nice visit, but I wouldn't go back.

Bistrot Paul Bert is well known to tourists and was been extensively reviewed. We had a 7:30 reservation when the restaurant opened and were surrounded by other parties of tourists. When the tables turned over French speakers started to file in. We had a nice corner table. The staff were OK but were noticeably nicer to francophones. We were started off with good gougeres. Wine by the glass was disappointing. We tried one white and two reds and they were all meh. Appetizers were very good. We had the biggest artichokes that we have ever seen in our lives. Our friends had the pig trotters and the burrata- two thumbs up. Two of our party split the some meunière. It was excellent and surprisingly easy to debone. Two of us had really good steak au poivre. We shared an excellent cheese board for dessert. Prices were fair. The space is straight out of central casting. It was a fun night at a nice bistro.

A truly memorable meal with the finest sauce au poivre and most perfectly cooked frites in the city! Attentive service and a cool atmosphere in the 11th arrondisement made this a meal to savor. Make a reservation in advance if you can!

The ouefs mayonnaise, the White Asparagus, and the steak au poivre, that glorious, glorious, steak au poivre were the best things I ate in 12 days in Paris. We walked in at 10:15 on a Tuesday night and ordered quickly, and it was beautiful. Once the waitress decided she liked us she said it was a good move to have come in when we did, no wait, prompt service. The au poivre was the most delicious of my life. Magnificent. I told the waitress I'd never had au poivre until then. Awesome service, perfect atmosphere, a proper perfect French restaurant. I cannot stop thinking about that meal.

After attempting to make a reservation for a couple weeks, we decided to go for it and arrive at opening time (7:30 PM) and try our luck. We were fortunate and that they had a space for two but we saw a number of people turned away by 8. We have been wanting to try the steak au poivre for quite some time and of course, each ordered the same. It came perfectly cooked and quickly. The sauce was much more delicate than I expected, and the pepper flavor really came through. The fries were very crispy and a nice accompaniment to soak up the extra sauce that was left on the plate. The Grand Marnier soufflé was tremendous, fluffy, flavorful, and airy. The waiter was quick and fairly attentive and a bit comical. We sat outside and it was a lovely Paris evening. We Very much enjoyed this meal.

I was looking forward to eating here on our second to last night in Paris. We were met with incredibly rude and snarky service. Were told contradictory information and my Mom at one point even asked me "do you think he's treating us like this because we are women?"It ruined the entire dinner, we couldn't wait to leave. For the money it was such a waste- I'd rather have better service and a welcoming atmosphere with ok food than have to endure this place again.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite Bistro experience in Paris! Can't say enough:
My favorite Bistro experience in Paris! Can't say enough: everything was delicious especially their steak a poivre sauce and soufflé. Everything single dish hit the mark and if you are adventurous there's always some French delicacies for you to try out. Service is effective and ruthlessly French ! Wien list is great. Ambiance is the best bistro experience you could ask for.

We took a chance and showed up at lunchtime without a reservation and got massively lucky! We had heard from various folks that this was the best steak au pointe in all of Paris and OMG this was spot on! Artichokes had just come into season and our waiter recommended this. It was spot on. Delicious sauce, tender artichoke. Oh so good. We both got the steak - medium rare, cooked perfectly and the frites were divine. Service was phenomenal - so glad we took a chance and highly recommend!

We had an excellent evening! They lost our reservation but were very accommodating. We went for the steak au poivre, and were not disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal I had in Paris.
Steak is good quality meat, the sauce makes it supreme. Good fries, good wine, and tasty deserts. Service was top. I'd definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a phenomenal meal! This place is always booked.
The front staff was able to accommodate me despite not having reservations. I decided to skip appetisers since I knew I was going to have a Filet with peppercorn. Note: My fellow Americans may want to order the steak bien cuit (well done) and it will come out medium. That's the way it is here. I had the île flottante (floating island). It is meringue in cream with caramel and almonds. Really good. I wanted to order the cheese platter, but the server noted it is too much for one person. And service was exceptional. I think 3 out of 4 servers speak English, which is a bonus.

Superb! My friends and I met up here for one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Delicious scallops with coco beans (no idea what they'd be called in the US) and filet de Beouf au poivre. And fries. Soooo many fries perfectly cooked. (No Mayo though to dip them in, sadly.) The champagne and wine were also delightful. The waiter was very friendly. I highly recommend!

I went here and the waiter beat me up and called me American scum. Then he fed me two bottles of French wine and the best meal I ever realized I wanted post-order- veal kidney. If you want to fall in love with Paris and French food- you go here.I'm now following everyone associated with this lovely bistro- and their 3rd cousins too.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals I've ever had.
Everything was so delicious. The steak and frites with that sauce, so good. One of Anthony Bourdains favorite spots, so we had to try it. Did not disappoint. The floating island cake is a must as well
Be the first to ReplyThis is the classic French bistro at the highest standard.
I had a beat salad tartare that was outstanding. The dish comes out looking like a steak tartare. Vinaigrette and fresh herbs balance out the dish. All exceptional market fresh ingredients delicately prepared.I also had a sort of shepherds pie that I forgot to write down the name of. Also excellent!Reservations highly recommended as the entire restaurant was full while the ones next door were empty.
Be the first to ReplyI stumbled into Bistrot Paul Bert for an evening dinner
I stumbled into Bistrot Paul Bert for an evening dinner reservation after about one glass of wine too many. This may (at least partially) explain my thoughts on this restaurant: their steak au poivre is the single most delicious steak I've tasted in my life. I'm normally not much of a steak fan but this is something else. Buttery, peppery sauce paired with perfectly tender medium rare steak--it doesn't get any better than this. And yes, I will have frites with that.

It's hard to get a reservation, we got lucky and the minute they opened my husband asked if they had an extra table and it turns out they save just a couple for walkins. We got the last one. We had a very simple dinner of steak and frites, and everything was delicious! We got the steak with the peppercorn sauce, I had no idea pepper could be that spicy. Maybe I'm starting to become more sensitive to spice, but wow there was some kick. I really loved it though!
Be the first to ReplyEveryone says to come here so naturally we did.
I HIGHLY recommend you don't. One of the waiters spilt wine on a vintage, non water proof Cartier watch. The manager Bertrand came over, without a mask on (illegal), to the table and berated us. He said that the watch was shit. He said Cartier was shit. He said that it was a cheap watch and worthless. I asked him to please leave us alone 5 times and he continued to berate us and then finally walked away. I've been to dozens of high end restaurants in Paris and never in my life have I been berated by the staff for a mistake they made. The entrees were also not even good. The haddock was dry and my pigeon was over cooked and dry. Also the wine, which was overpriced, was some of the worst I've ever had in France. Many other reviewers have had a similar experience with the rude staff, terrible food, and overpriced, and undrinkable wine. So not only is their staff terrible and rude, the food is some of the worst I've had in Paris. I strongly urge you to skip this place. Just because Alison Roman came here and had a good experience clearly does not mean you will.
Be the first to ReplyI've been in Paris for a month and this was the worst meal
I've been in Paris for a month and this was the worst meal I've had. A bald man behind the bar was R-U-D-E to me and my girlfriend. I've never had such terrible service here or in the states. He talked down to us and then sat us in the back room with any other American customer that walked in. I guess I would be a jerk too if I was balding. The food was on OK.
Be the first to ReplyInsanely rude front desk guy and food was just eh.
Not by any means the best I've had in Paris. I guess it's iconic ? but you could literally visit most bistros in Paris and get as good as you get here -- and there are too many newer more interesting bistros popping up all over the city. If you're American they put you in the back with other Americans. When asked why we couldn't sit in front we were told some nonsense. We left mid meal. Hard pass.

There's a lot of hype about this place on the internet and it somehow has a Michelin Star. We traveled 30 mins each way to try this restaurant on our last night in Paris. Our experience was sub-par.First, our party of 4 had a reservation for 7:30pm, which is when the restaurant opens. We were seated at the VERY back of the restaurant and crammed on top of the other 7:30 pm tables. "Why are we being packed in like sardines?" I wondered as we passed by the front, open dining room with a view. I quickly learned that the jerks running this place put the majority of the English speakers in the crowded back room with one server, while the front dining space with a view of the street and open air is reserved for locals. This place is popular enough to get away with this BS, but it's still disappointing. Having traveled thousands of miles to try supposedly great French cuisine just to be relegated to the back room and treated like ugly Americans was a bummer for sure. After we sat for 20 mins, our waitress spoke to us for the first time. No introductions or niceties, just "ready to order?" We hadn't even received water yet, but we knew the drill and placed our orders. 45 mins later we received our meals. The 2 person beef entree looked great but it was at least 50% fat and the fat carnage on our plates was disgusting. At least the frites are great. We also ordered the famous pepper sauce filet and frites. The sauce was good, the filet was tough and WELL DONE. Let me repeat: WELL DONE - not what we ordered. I was so disappointed. We ordered the soufflés when we placed our entree order and probably only waited another 30 mins for dessert after dinner. Unfortunately, after dessert we waited for at least 30 mins to get the bill - even though we had asked for the check 4 times since we had early morning travel the next day. If you are coming here to Instagram a famous spot, then sure, absolutely, this is a gem for your social media feed. If you are passing through Paris and are hoping to enjoy a classic Bistrot or steak frites, I urge you to go elsewhere. There are many other quaint local spots that have friendlier service and better quality food. Lastly, our bill was €251 euros (plus we tipped €25 because as an American that is ingrained in our brains) and we didn't even order wine - just a few beers, the steaks dishes, and the soufflés. Horribly overpriced. 2/5 stars at most.

We came here after an absence of five years and it was just as good as we remember. The ambience is perfect and the food is divine. We started with the homemade pork terrine and sweetbread. The terine was nicely balanced and the lamb sweetbreads and mushroom In puff pastry could not have bEen better. Due to the richness of the sweetbreads my partner opted for the sole which had a lovely butter sauce, while I opted for the Lapin which is so rarely served in the US. The rabbit was lovely and the mustard sauce perfectly complimented. The deserts were veRy traditional but remarkable in their depth of flavor and lightness of touch. If you don't speak French don't worry everyone does even though everyone else in the restaurant appeared to be French the day we were there.

Went twice, once for dinner and again for lunch the next day. Classic Paris bistro that seems to be a hold-out compared to what is happening in the rest of the city. A little out of the way, but that means fewer tourists and more locals.

. and Antony Bourdain. Do yourself a favor and get the classic - Steak and Frites (which is not what I did). I came here for the French cuisine bistro experience. I will admit - I have 0 understanding of what is "great French food" and my review is based solely on whether my taste buds appreciated it or not. I strayed away from Bourdain's recommendation and got the Steak Tartare. It was just.. too much tartare on my plate. The visual look affected my ability to finish it or enjoy it. I got the EUR41 menu - bone marrow, tartare and soufflé. All just okay. I spent a lot of time deciding between the Paris Brest and Soufflé and I think either ways it would have all been mediocre. My husband on the other hand made the wise choice of getting the Steak and Frites. It was just right - good peppercorn sauce and solid fries. I should've done the same. Return? Hmmm no. Too many places in Paris now that the bistrot experience has been "checked off" my list.
