From the moment the restaurant opened, people clamored to get their table. We sampled almost everything on the menu and were not disappointed on any of the dishes. The menu is diverse and showcases the culinary skills of Chef Calvin Eng. Just one drawback is that with the size of restaurant, having just one bathroom for the entire restaurant is a little daunting. Overall a great experience

I stopped by last night, a few friends recommended it (both for food and drinks). Some of the drinks were good but the bartender had an attitude and was weirdly aggressive. Not sure if he was having a bad day or just on too many drugs, haha. The vibe was cool though, and I'll be back (and hopefully have better service)
Be the first to ReplyNot "just" a Chinese restaurant.
Chef Calvin pulls from his past to deliver amazing dishes while still keeping with the flavors of his mom's Cantonese/Toisanese dishes. Don't expect to find your typical sweet-and-sour pork with its cloying, red-dyed sauce. Rather, be amazed by his use of fermented bean curd, salted fish, and XO sauce (to name a few). While we were a party of 10 and had reservations for 5pm, I was surprised to see many people lined up to get in as soon as the restaurant opened. All tables were filled by 5:15. Can't wait to go again!! My personal favorite of the night - Naw Mai Fan (shiitake, king trumpet & shimeji mushroom conserva over crispy sticky rice)

Came here with a reservation for 8pm on Saturday with a group of 5. Here's what we got: dao gok (Chinese Long Beans) - this is a MUST these were so good! I wish we ordered 2 plates of these instead of 1. Definitely need to get these! gerng jook (Congee) - this was really good! As a vegetarian, it was nice to be able to try something that isn't usually vegetarian friendly. This was so good! I especially loved soy egg naw mai fan (Mushroom Sticky Rice) - this was good not great. The bites I had with the mushroom were really good but without mushroom it was a bit bland. x.o cheung fun (Rice Rolls) - this was by far my favorite and are a must! The small rice rolls were PACKED with flavor. Wish the portion was bigger but these were so good. 10/10 must! fuyu cacio e pepe mein - this was really unique! Definitely tasted like cacio e pepe with a twist. I would get this too! bak cheet gai (cold poached chicken) - my friends really liked this! Fair warning, when they say cold, it is really cold. But they loved the flavor of this! The rice and sauce with the chicken was also really good. Fair warning though, it does take a while to come out. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend giving this place a try. I will say, the food is pretty expensive for what you get and it took over an hour to get our main dishes after we got our appetizers which was a bit of a let down. Other than that, we had a great meal!
Be the first to ReplyService was very friendly.
The location was very chill. We came around closing time and last call time. They let us know multiple times before hand so we got our full order in. The cocktails were pretty tasty. We got a variety of their dish as seen below. Now for the food. Their fried rice was pretty good but very standard. For the price we paid I'd much rather go somewhere else. Rib sandwich is definitely overhyped. Taste was very strong on the hoisin side. Texture could be better for the price. Walnut shrimp was prob the highlight. Again you can get it elsewhere. The chicken was pretty good but would be alittle better with a different sauce. Overall experience is good but alittle pricey for what we got.

Such fun and interesting food, the drinks are incredible too! Everything we got was amazing and we'll be back often!

Highly overhyped restaurant that serves traditional cantonese dishes with smaller portions, higher price point, and with cantonese pinyin names. Not a fan.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is really over-hyped.
I thought that ideas/concept of the dishes were very interesting, but honestly all of the flavors were lost. Every dish was so oversalted I was literally thirsty for hours afterwards. I also think they were a little heavy handed with the msg (which I love cooking with, but you can just dump a bunch in and expect it to taste good). Basically, I have no idea why this has so much hype other than the dishes sound interesting on paper and it's a small place so it's hard to get a reservation. Also worth noting when we went here everyone dining and cooking at this restaurant was white, so maybe it's made for a more american palate We ordered: - the chrysanthemum salad which was pretty good, but nothing special -salt and pepper squid which was basically mushy, extremely salty calamari - long beans and youtiao which again had this heavy salt/msg flavor which got old. The beans were kind of mushy. The youtiao was good, but it's fried dough so that's always going to be a win -mussels these were good and juicy. The sauce was nice and I liked the small shoestring fries. However, I feel this dish was pretty standard. I guess I haven't seen mussels and fries at Asian restaurants before so that's interesting I guess? - rice rolls had the same flavor as many if the dishes above. I liked that they were crispy but wanted a little bit of chewiness that I've had at other places. -the trout was fine. It's a very creative concept and the fishcake was pretty good but not mind blowing. And after eating so much salty, bland food it did not stand out to recover the meal In summary: a bunch of average/below average food for a pretty steep price (both monetary and having to fight for a reservation) Pros: -Service was good -Interior is cute - I actually thought the portion sizes were pretty decent for an upscale fusion place in NYC (though no one really wanted to finish each dish) - MSG martini was delicious

Love love loved this dinner! I wish I remembered our servers name, she was super nice and helpful in our ordering. We sat outside and it was like 30 degrees out so I was worried but we were totally covered and closed in with heat lamp things on the ceiling per table - most people took their coats off. We had the peppered shrimp and that was STELLAR! It was flavorful and unique and just delicious with a large portion. Also had the mussels which were in this amazing broth that we loved! Overall a really great spot if you can get in!
Be the first to ReplySeveral of the dishes were really special.
The chrysanthemum salad is unmissable. And the fried squid was excellent. I thought the cacio e pepe was good, but not especially notable; and the updated rib sandwich was also good, but not spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyI tend to agree with several of the other posters.
Not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Food was good but not great and prices were quite high for what you get. Our server was not interested at all. Even when we tried to engage she was brusque and not friendly in the least. I rarely review but this spot is sadly overrated in my view. We won't be going back.

All the dishes at @bonniesbrooklyn are presented beautifully, but tbh I was kind of disappointed given how hyped up the place is. Service was questionable, and the chow mein and sticky rice were over-seasoned.I did like the cha siu mcrib though! It's a great fusion with yummy char siu in a milky bun! The fish was really special and tasted good, but I think I might prefer fish in its original form

Given how hard it was to make a reservation here and the high prices, my girlfriend and I were ready for a meal that exceeded our expectations. Unfortunately, I would give the food a 3/5--don't get me wrong we enjoyed everything we ordered, but given the hype, we were disappointed. Everything just felt like it could have been a notch better (we ordered the squid, McRib, and chow mein). That being said, the service here was the real star of the show. Everyone on staff was charismatic, hilarious and attentive (even gave us a candle to celebrate our anniversary after I listed it under our reservation on Resy!). Honestly, if I were to go back, it would be to sit at the bar and chat with the servers. Overall, for the price I would say you could find a delicious meal for a third of the price in Chinatown, but would recommend for the ambiance and service.
Be the first to Replyfood is def 4/5, but due to the price, i need to knock down
food is def 4/5, but due to the price, i need to knock down to 3.5. i will still round up and give bonnie's a 4.my bf and i have been wanting to try this place for months now and finally snagged and outdoor res for thurs evening at 7:30pm. there seems to be a couple of canto fusion spots opening in the city and i'm so happy that canto food is getting its time in the spotlight. the outdoor seating was well constructed but the ventilation was terrible.if i were to summarize bonnie's in a just a few words, i'd say this is the *gateway into canto food*. meaning, it's for those who haven't really tried canto food and don't want to venture into chinatown or flushing to go to those really good hole-in-the-wall servers-yell-at-you type of spots. bonnie's manages to integrate great canto flavors into a more digestible (literally) form. if you find yourself enjoying the flavors of the cha siu glaze on the mcrib, the xo cheung fun or the jiew yeem yao yu (salt and pepper squid), i highly recommend making your way over to more authentic spots like kong sihk tong, e noodle, or noodle village in manhattan for the same dishes at half the price. don't get me wrong, i appreciate bonnie's creative spin on the authentic dishes but it's not "spun" enough for the price esp when i know i can get the same flavors for less $$.i think my biggest gripe with bonnie's is that it is grossly overpriced - i wouldn't say expensive, just overpriced. the price isn't much higher than a tapas spot you'd hit up down the street, but iykyk that paying $19 for salt and pepper squid or $27 for cheung fun is ABSURD. the food and flavors are great - they did a good job maintaining the canto flair. we got the salt and pepper squid, hup to ha, cheung fun and fuyu cacio e pepe. squid: 4/5 - great dish, tasted authentic (minus the "chinese" ranch which was not chinese at all??) again felt wrong to pay $19 for that tiny portion cheung fun: 4/5 - awesome flavor, tasted super authentic but was it worth $27? no. you can get really great, if not better, cheung fun in chinatown for little a fraction of the costhup to ha: 4.5/5 - i LOVE walnut shrimp so i may be biased but they did a really great job with this dish. it came with 6 lightly breaded skrimps tossed in kewpie mayo (which you could really taste) and apples, candied walnuts, tangerines, and surprisingly, the star of the dish, broccoli. i think they boiled/steamed the broccoli in chicken broth but it was perfectly soft and had amazing flavor! would've just been a 4 if it weren't for the brocc!fuyu cacio e pepe: 4.5/5, this was really well executed! it maintained the cacio e pepe flavor while adding a really deep umami asian flavor. i wish all italian restaurants did this to their cacio e pepe tbh lolmcrib: 4/5 - i really enjoyed the char siu flavor and the milk bread was reminiscent of the bread i'd get from the asian bakeries growing up, soft, milky and sweet. it was a great combo with the meat. i just wish they served some chili oil alongside it.re: drinks, bf said the highball was not good and he LOVES a toki highball but "nothing about that drink was a highball - tastes like fruit punch"i'm glad we finally tried this place but i won't be back. i'd recommend pot luck club over bonnie's ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This restaurant is one of the best restaurants I've gone to in 2022. Have t been back in 23 just yet. The service is always incredibly patient and easy to get along with. The food blows my mind as there are traditional Asian dishes with an italian or American flair. Super cool chef and just worth waiting for hours for a table to eat here. Order the entire menu, you won't be sorry you did. However if you are strapped for cash the shrimp, the soup, the chicken are some off my absolute fav!

eh.my friends and i were really excited to be able to try this place as we had finally snagged a reservation. every dish had its fault and wasn't worth the price in my opinion.the crispy squid was not actually crispy and tasted like any other similar fish elsewhere. the mushroom sticky rice was actually quite good, but i feel like it would have benefitted from some acid or other adjustment as it tasted very one-note. the fish was so disappointing. for $50+ i imagined a different dish, but it was a fish cake stuffed back into the skin and didn't have much flavor difference to the cheap fish cakes you could find in store. overall, unsure if i'd ordered the wrong items, but it was pretty mid.

Came here with my Cantonese girlfriend who (rightfully) complained from start to end. She said that her Cantonese ancestors would strike her with a lightning bolt if she ever cooked food like this. With a reservation, we had to wait ~30mins at the bar before getting seated. If I had to describe the food in one word, it would be oily. The only good thing we ordered was the bak cheet gai, but even then the chicken was cut into humongous unpalatable chunks. Would not recommend. Go to Chinatown and give your money to a REAL Cantonese restaurant.
Be the first to ReplySALT FAT AND NO ACID.
We went to Bonnie's on a Friday night. When we entered the place was fully seated but not packed. The host immediately tells us they cannot seat us. After standing there for two seconds they all of a sudden could seat us. Fast forward to ordering our food the server tried to upsell everything saying the portions were small. The portions were not small at all. Now if I wanted to be a mediocre bowl of gummy white rice swimming in enough oil to tan my entire body and a Florida mother, I would be Bonnie's "billionaire fried rice". You may indeed end up paying billions in healthcare after processing the amount of grease ingested. My partner had the crispy (gummy) rice and (canned) mushrooms. Disgusting!!! I even felt bad for the bartender/server because after a couple bites I had to resort to a hunger strike to keep from getting sick. Finally I am not Chinese but I think it was weird that was not a singular Chinese customer and furthermore no Chinese people in the kitchen. Just a Williamsburg lumberjack looking man. Bonnie is that you?BONNIES YOU HAVE FAILED ME SO BAD. PLEASE RETURN MY $78.99 :((((
Be the first to ReplyPretty whatever about this place.
Had the McRib, congee, and some other stuff that was all meh. Asked the bartender for chili oil and they looked at me like I had just told them I was a sex offender. Would probably have enjoyed it more if it wasn't so up its own ass and they let you sit at the (empty) bar to have a drink while you wait for your +1 to get there.
Be the first to ReplyGoing to have to call this one hype.
None of the dishes quite "hit" for me. The oysters were drowned in toppings and lost any subtlety as the one note mignonette hit the palate. The honey walnut shrimp while executed flawlessly also fell flat. You can check out the rolled noodle dish cheung fun taking over a few places these days but piggyback bar has this one beat.

Some of the best Cantonese food I've had in the city, be sure to plan ahead as you need to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance. The char siu McRib is hands down a must order. They also were very welcome to special requests on some of the food (I asked the whole fish be uncut for a Lunar New Year tradition)
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is special and I love everything about it.
To my fellow ABCs, please notice how the overwhelming number of negative reviews are coming from our community. We need to stop putting down those who are trying to elevate our culture and voice, especially in an industry that often relegates us to the world of cheap eats. And you must've read about the concept and offering before stepping though the doors; why are you expecting prices and dishes to be what you're used to? The prices are the prices; if you can't afford it, it's not for you. And I love an ABC's take on familiar dishes. If it's not for you that's fine, but haters need to chill. To reviewer Irvin K: I love the refreshing segments of supremed orange in the walnut shrimp.
Be the first to ReplyI was really excited to try this restaurant.
It's so hard to get a reservation but I'm really not sure why. The only thing that was good was the drinks. The food was very greasy, salty and just wasn't good. We don't finish our entrees. I definitely won't be coming back here.
Be the first to ReplyAbsurdity is a perfect word to describe Bonnie's.
I am appalled at the prices of the dishes for a poor take at Cantonese food. There is NOTHING that is traditional or authentic about this Cantonese food. If you want culture and authenticity, Bonnie's is not that. The food and prices are fitting for the Williamsburg demographic: a group that has zero knowledge on Cantonese food. None of the staff members are Cantonese let alone Asian. If you want gentrified food that costs more than an arm feel free to go to Bonnie's. Objectively speaking, the taste of the food isn't bad, but the price for what it is is atrocious. These prices really makes the person believe in inflation that's for sure. Got damn walnut shrimp had oranges in it smfh. Better off going to Chinatown, flushing, dyker, 86 st Brooklyn and etc for more authentic food. If you wish to support TRUE culture, this is NOT it. My mom would've got a heart attack seeing what Bonnie's has done to our cultures food.
