After being seated to our table the waitress asked what we would like. Having to be at the theater next door in an hour we asked for some starters. The waitress ( whom swore and seemed in a rush) offered some calamari , battered prawns, salad and chips. On arrival of our starters we where given a very small serve of chopped up calamari $34 , bowl of lettuce $9.50, small serve of chips $9.50 , 4 small battered prawns $30. I am happy to pay for good food but this was unbelievable . Also ordering a couple of cocktails to drink at $20 each and being presented with a very small glass which had not even been filled. I will NOT be returning to this resturant. Total RIP OFF!!!!!

Meh. It was very expensive for seafood and not really that great. The seafood tasted overcooked. The oysters were suuppperrr fishy, and we are absolute oyster lovers and eat them everywhere. It was the first place we went out to eat in Melbourne and was just fine. We had heard that Melbourne had such good food! We went here because it was recommended by our hotel which was a little disappointing. I did try bay bugs for the first time, which were good enough, but they still tasted slightly overcooked.

Okay but nothing special, particularly for how expensive it is. It has a spurious feel - something isn't quite right.
Be the first to ReplyA long narrow Restaurant with high ceilings on Collins St.
Service was excellent.  We had bread and shared a spinach salad.  I also had the large plate of scallops and my wife had a steak.  Each Scallop was in a shell and tasted sweet in its sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly- seared on the outside and pink interior with crisp potatoes

SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019   We chose " Box " primarily for its menu but additionally because of its proximity to our hotel, The Westin and because of two word-of-mouth recommendations.   Restaurant has a "New York" feel, ie. Long, narrow interior with bar (service bar only) along one side. Several tables outside but, at 65 degrees and no heaters, they didn't seem all that appealing. Never-the-less, they were all occupied.   We made 8:45 reservations at 8:15 on this Saturday night and were given the only unoccupied table when we arrived.  We were the last to leave at about 10:40 or so.   Service was fine although it was sometimes difficult to understand waitstaff for whom English was not the original language.  Being American probably didn't help us.....   Spouse had Sole.  I had Scallops Mornay.  We were both happy, but, as Americans, we had trouble with paying extra for a salad or vegetable and, Good Lord, there wasn't a starch in site.  What, no potato?  Oh, we're so picky.   Interestingly, I have never seen scallops served this way.  Each scallop was served in an individual scallop shell with a dab of Mornay and I've never seen scallops served with what appeared to be a little red appendage attached.  They must detach it at home before serving or it was a different species.  At any rate, I cut it off before eating.  Probably silly.   Deserts were excellent.  I had a "sticky date pudding" with sauce and ice cream, never seen in America and just wonderful. Spouse has Creme Bruilette  ( can't get a spell check on that one) with strawberries dipped in white chocolate. Coffee was good.  Guess I've finally figured out how to order it in .Australia.   Restaurant had been suggested by two different acquaintances and, after tonight, we would recommend it too.

Ordered a Hot platter at $110 per pax (minimum 2 pax), note that almost all 11 dishes in this platter is fried except oysters (baked), salmon (grilled) and Moreton Bay Bugs (grilled). Of all dishes, personally feel that the grilled salmon, mussels and Moreton Bay Bug are the best. Calamari is soft and goes well with the white tartar sauce. 9 other dishes... goes well with a 3 star. Average I would so, not that fantastic but relatively good, good. Would love to try their cold platter! Couldn't take in another large cold platter on TOP of the hot platter. So we ordered 2 oysters and they were beyond fresh! Got the natural flavours and the one with bacon (soso-lama). Ambience could so slightly better with some refurbishing but hey we had a good time nonetheless!

Stay Away from this Restaurant! Â If we could rate this restaurant Zero, we would. We reserved this restaurant for dinner on our last night in Melbourne and we were really looking forward to what we thought would be a good seafood experience. Turns out we'll never know. After my wife was served her appetizer of Tiger Prawn Spring Rolls, no more food appeared. After about a 40 minute wait, we got up and left. The person behind the counter who our server told us was the owner, told us that the problem was a large party upstairs. We reminded him that this was hardly our problem. He became brusque at this point and asked us "What can I say? It's just one of those nights". With some reluctance, we settled up the bill, which included a bottle of wine and the appetizer. A perfunctory apology followed from the owner. We left hungry, frustrated and determined to let everyone know that this is a restaurant to be avoided. This has sadly left us with a bad taste for dining in Melbourne generally.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a lovely meal.
We came here because we wanted some good seafood before a show. The staff were attentive and we had a three course meal and made ot to our show comfortably in less than 2 hours. While everything was nice I highly recommend the prawn spring rolls. Overall it was a little pricey ($250 for three people for three courses and drinks) but not bad considering its Melbourne CBD and high end.

Box is definitely an amazing seafood bar which disservice to be located on the famous Collins Street in Melbourne! The service is elegant, performant, efficient, nice and kind.Excellent presentation of the products and good recommendation for the oysters. They are attentive without being over bearing. The atmosphere is classic, chic with a touch of marble.

I was serviced by Melanie. She was great! Didn't miss a beat. I had the oysters and the seafood pasta. It was so good, I took another order back to the room with me. Â Located smack in the middle of the the renowned Collins Ave. Highly recommended.

The prawns were rubbery and tasteless and had definitely just been frozen. The cocktail sauce tasted like Mayonnaise from MacDonalds. The white bait was so soggy it was almost a liquid. My boyfriend ate that but I couldn't bring myself to touch it. And the squid was greasy and impenetrably chewy. A shame as the restaurant is right next to the Regent Theater and could probably draw a much bigger crowd given the King Kong musical is due to open there in a couple of weeks!
