What's behind the curtain? Something that used to be the best, I think. Burger Joint's burgers were awesome at some point. I haven't been back in a long time, but what I used to remember was that these burgers used to be the underground best. Standing in line to order, the presentation definitely looked like these burgers were going to be great. The fresh toppings like lettuce & tomato are very much present but the burger just seems to be lacking any flavor. I got mine with mostly everything on it except for pickles but I was kinda missing more basic salt and pepper seasoning in the burger. The added bacon and cheese didn't add as much character as I hoped. The queue was really slow moving and the order pickup spot was in the middle of the line to order which is really awkward and completely inefficient. I also ordered a brownie but for some reason that particular item is self serve but I wasn't informed until after I left. That certainly did not add well to my overall experience. The layout was definitely different from my prior visits, there is more seating now, but a couple of the table tops were a bit messy with leftovers from the prior customer. Either Burger Joint's burgers used to be so much better (and cheaper, LOL) or other burger joints in this city have caught up and created a better burger standard. Both could be true I suppose.

POOR QUALITY, AVOID!!! Burgers are small, burned, dry, and mediocre at best! NO "juicy burger" here. Seriously, the burgers you make at home will be much better than this basic burger. I gave them a good tip which the owner/manager acknowledged. I asked for a small soda refill. He said "you'll have to pay". I own a restaurant and cater to my customers. Learn how to build customer loyalty -- a small ounce refill is not going to hurt your business. AND, PUT LESS ICE IN YOUR SODA AND DON'T BE CHEAP! I should've gone to SHAKE SHACK! Definitely the much better choice and experience!

This place is much bigger than when I went years ago. It's got lots of seating room. It's a fun place to hang out at and get a decent burger.
Be the first to Replyenergy in here was cool.
funny how the place is stuck inside of a fancy restaurant. got the chipotle chicken sandwich and it was yummy but i wish the toppings didn't cost so much. sandwich was filling but not too filling!

Stopped there recently and I didn't expect the food I ordered. The burger has raw patty and not nicely done. I ordered some food and that was a real good. It taste really fantastic and has good portion size. The salad was good and fresh, nice place and good setting. Really disappointed with the burger I ordered.

It recently changed location from the small space behind the red curtains to the larger space formerly where "Norma's" was across the hall where uncomfortably (for me) there are some stairs. The red curtains hide the entrance, and there is no sign indicating its location. I miss the pub intimacy of the former space, but the long lines that indicated it was a place to go weren't daunting on my two recent visits. Same quality food, same ordering procedure, some of the same staff I recognized but many more tables for seating. I used to order by phone, walk over, pick up the food and take it home to eat as seats were scarce. Glad the Burger Joint continues to be popular.
Be the first to ReplyPricey, interesting ambiance, but the fries are SO GOOD.
Got the sweet potato fries (surprised it was mixed with regular fries), and they were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside!! Burger was decent, a little too charred for some tastes. It's cool how they ask how you want the burger cooked though! My friend asked a lady in the front for water and got an attitude, but later on another employee delivered waters to our table so that was really nice!
Be the first to ReplySpeakeasy burger joint located in the swanky Thompson hotel.
Go through the red curtains on the right to enter the hidden restaurant. Food:Pretty simple normal burger menu. They don't have any specialty burgers and the toppings are pretty straightforward. While good, we weren't wowed by the burger. Their gluten free version, was just subbing out the bun for a piece of lettuce. The fries were decent, although pretty generous size it matches the expensive price tag. Overall, don't think it's worth the hype and there are plenty of other places to get your burger fix. The appeal is that it's "hidden" and not a regular restaurant.

After this meal, my partner and I turned to each other and agreed that we had both just eaten the best burger of our lives. Simple but delicious. Burger Joint is located within the Thompson Central Park Hotel. They were founded in 2002 as a secret venue. It's the absolute coolest to look at all of the stickers, pictures, notes, etc... all over the walls left by those who have eaten there over the last 20 years. We went in January on a weekday and there was a short line but we were seated almost immediately & we were a party of 4. The Burger Joint itself is very small and probably seats less than 30 people. We were grateful to be seated so quickly! Our server was lovely, the service moved fast, and the food was delicious. We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat speakeasy burgers place.
Service was fast and polite, when explaining the questions I had about the menu. You need to access the Thompson Hotel in order to reach the restaurant. We walked in and didn't check in because we knew exactly where we were going, and they screamed at us as we walked " How can I help you???" As if we were not allowed in the lobby, then we mentioned the restaurant and someone walked us there. I know the restaurant recently relocated to a bigger space within the lobby, so maybe that's why they asked? Not entirely sure this might have been instructed, but it was politely weird. Anyways we got in through the red velvet curtains and the experience went really nice from that point. We ordered the cheeseburger with bacon and our choice of veggies and sauces, the beef was cooked at the term requested in both burgers, they were yummy, juicy and good in size.We also had the sweet potato fries, very generous portion enough for two people, in my opinion they could have had more seasoning but we add some salt and pepper and that was enough. Music selection was nice, ambiance and decor very authentic. As most burger restaurants in the city they lack a signature sauce, which to me is key when outstanding from others, however, I did like the food, the service and prices are fair, so I would be coming back and would recommend.Definitely a nice and unexpected spot.

Uber trendy and certainly not cheap, but when my $20 burger comes out over-done I'm not a happy boy. The one I had at the Shake Shack the day before was better, and at 1/4 the price. This is not medium rare...
Be the first to ReplyThis is my go to for a burger in NYC.
.. mostly cause it's basically a closet in this swank hotel but also because I pay homage to Anthony Bourdain. I love the menu is on cardboard and keeps it basic. You're lucky if you get a spot to sit but that is the appeal. Thanks for still being there!!!
Be the first to ReplyA friend suggested Burger Joint after a walk through
A friend suggested Burger Joint after a walk through central park and upon entering the hotel and not yet knowing the name, I was expected fine dining. I was pleasantly surprised to find this literal hole in the wall. The ambiance is great, I felt like I wasn't even in New York. Very refreshing. The sweet potato fries were amazing...like super good. I got a bacon cheeseburger and that was also great. The cheese was super melty and there was a lot of bacon. I'd say the prices were a little high but that's New York for ya.

I'm very happy to be in NYC so I can try all of Anthony Bourdain's Favorite New York Eats list. The closest restaurant to my midtown hotel was the Burger Joint, located in the Thompson Hotel. Cutest burger shack, tucked away in the corner of the hotel. Arrived at 12 noon on a Friday and beat the lunch crowd. Ordered hamburger with the works plus bacon, fries and a soda. Cost was about $22. I ordered the burger well done, but when it received it, it was a medium pink. French fries were good, needed a little salt. 4 stars for the food.Ambiance- very cool, I have the "I Want to Believe" poster too from my X-Files days so I felt at home...5 stars

Grateful as a vegan to have these guys around. Friendly staff, warm place, hidden gem. INYC!
Be the first to ReplyIf you can find it you'll enjoy it.
It's better than you would think. Not sure how I've never reviewed the Burger Joint having eaten here for 15 years. The menu is simple and food is cooked to order, fast and delicious. The price is great for NYC with a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke setting you back $20.25. You won't be hungry. Come here for lunch or as a late night, hangover precautionary meal. Trust me. Better than a glass of water Tylenol. Tucked away in what's now the Thompson Central Park New York hotel. Finding it is part of the charm of this tiny, loud, crammed, burger joint. I've seen the lines out the door which helped people find it but hopefully it's a little quieter when you visit so the hunt for the door is on. Once inside it's not what you'll expect. Go with it and enjoy your food. The others here sure all. Nothing fancy. Just a straight burger joint for your enjoyment.

Cuisine: 7Service: 6Decor: 6Value: 8Overall: 7Once my favorite burger in NYC due to both it's taste and value, Burger Joint is no longer on the top of my list anymore. With that said, it is still a very good burger made fresh to order using their own blend of fat back, brisket, and sirloin. However, the last two times I have visited, the beef was under seasoned. Add more salt please. It'll bring out more of the beefiness. As for how I like it, I usually order a cheeseburger with The Works, which includes lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup, mustard and mayo. You can choose any of the items listed above individually without additional charge, but bacon is $1.60 more. There is also fries, shakes, brownies, etc. New additions include a slaw burger and beyond burger.Service is minimal, but cashier is often humorous and friendly. You will want to avoid lunch hours when nearby office workers places large orders that could take very long to prepare. At those times, it feels very chaotic with many people standing around waiting for their meal. Off hours, it is often a simple ten minutes wait for your burger hot off the grill.Lastly, everyone has already mentioned that the restaurant is hidden behind a curtain in the lobby of the Thompson Hotel (formerly Le Parker Meridian). Often noticeable with a line extended beyond the curtain. Inside the actual restaurant, it looks like an old wooden shack with graffiti everywhere, fitting for a Burger Joint.

Highly recommend this amazing Burger Joint! You will love the amazing service, and awesome food.Thank you to the super amazing staff that has given me, family and friends the best service for over 12 years!Special thanks to Cefar, Tashima, and Jeff, these 3 staff members are the rockstars of the restaurant! The burgers are beef or plant based char grilled, made fresh to order, and you can have the works on your burger. The fries are potato or sweet potato. This legendary historical spot has a lot of history! Every celebrity you can think of has signed their name on the wall, from: Howard Stern, Iron Mike Tyson, Piers Morgan, Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Rhianna, 50 Cent, the list goes on! The red curtain was placed to separate the restaurant from the fancy Le Parker Meridian hotel. This was the cool place to eat burgers late night.

Oh my stars this burger is A1, the tops, best of the best! The single is remarkable but the double is out of this world; like a Double Double on steroids. The fries are like McDonald's and they have gigantic brownies that I didn't try. The staff are cool and friendly and the vibe is such a contrast to the boutique hotel it is connected to. This burger is so juicy and flavorful with the high-quality meat, cheese, onions, and sauces all blended together in a wonderful symphony.

The Burger Joint, a "speakeasy" style restaurant nestled in the Hotel lobby of the Thompson Central Park. I first heard of this place through a travel Vlog I watched while planning my trip to NYC. However, when I looked them up on Yelp it said it was closed permanently. I was so sad! The Vlogger was raving about this place and I was looking forward to chomping down on a good burger. Nonetheless, I still had a hankering for a burger tonight and decided to swing by where the Burger Joint was supposed to be. To my surprise the burger spot had re-opened! I ordered a cheeseburger with the works (add jalapeños and bacon), an order of fries, and a water. My burger was cooked perfect medium and packed with all the fixings. One thing that I didn't like was that the pickle/jalapeño juice made the bun super soggy by the time I got back to my hotel (I'm only two blocks away). I was also kinda bummed that I didn't get my bacon T_T but I think they inadvertently saved me the calories. The fries were pretty fresh, not over salted, and crispy. Overall this isn't a blow your mind type burger but it is a solid burger to eat after you've had a beer or two with friends in Manhattan. Or a cool place to have a beer AND a burger. I would give this place a 3 on the burger (mainly because my missing bacon) but will bump it up to a 3.5 because of the cool idea of it being a "speakeasy". You have to be in the know. Otherwise you'll walk right by the fancy hotel and wouldn't even know that this place exists.

This review is from a visit I made, pre-COVID Anyone knows that when you're looking for a speakeasy in NYC, they notice that these places are hard to find; this burger joint is the same, a food place secretly hidden inside a hotel. The burgers in this joint are AMAZING! It's what makes you wanting to come back and eat another. Lines do form outside the place and there are signs that suggest to customers to know what you want to order before making your way to the counter. The place itself sells fries, beers, and milkshakes and has very minimal seating, like 3 booths. The burgers themselves are juicy. The melted cheese fuses the condiments into this tasteful blend that seasons the burger. I highly recommend anyone trying to have a burger that's not from a food chain to try this place out; you will not be disappointed.
