I visited this place with the same friends that I took a trip to Vienna with two years ago. This cafe felt like we were back there. It's charming, elegant and the food and pastries are spot on! There will probably be a bit of a wait. One stands in line outside (near the museum line) to enter. But the wait is worth it. There is an upstairs cafe and a downstairs cafe. Both are lovely so if there is a spot that opens up downstairs, you should take it. Everything about it here made us happy! I highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyI wish restaurants wouldn't behave this way.
I stopped in for a pastry and a cold drink. I ordered both. In addition, I asked for a cup of hot water because I like sipping hot water. When the check came, I'd been charged for the hot water. I asked the waitress about it, and she was super apologetic and obviously worried about her tip. You could tell that this had happened before and that she'd been punished for the restaurant's policy. I paid the bill, obviously, and also gave her a big tip. But I did speak to the manager, I hope not rudely but to say that I'd enjoyed the food and the ambiance, that the menu was intriguing and I was considering returning, but that I thought a charge for hot water was unwelcoming. The manager basically scolded me for ordering hot water instead of a coffee drink and said that after many, many bad experiences they had been forced to add this charge.I just can't imagine how many bad experiences they've had in an expensive neighborhood with people purposely ordering hot water in order to avoid paying for fancy coffee drinks. I think it's much more likely that some people, like me, just prefer hot water sometimes. Certainly the additional charge can't compensate for the loss of customer good will. But the thing that bothers me the most, and made me post this review, is that it is absolutely clear that the people who pay most highly for this policy are the servers.

I had been looking forward to this place specially for sachet torte. It didn't turn out to be as exciting as I was expecting. Entrees on the other hand were an excellent treat for the taste buds. Be prepared for small portion sizes compared to the price point. Both service & ambiance is pleasant, not extraordinary but quite a wait to get in.
Be the first to Replyno wait at 11.
30am on a Wednesday, but had to get through layers of security at the Museum. service was bland & prompt. we had salmon on toast (average) & smoked trout crepes (very very good) & a very narrow slice of linzer w/ schlag (a must). prices were very high. nice place to go to once in your life.

Very long wait outside but they organized the line well and had a heat lamp. Cakes were amazing, coffee was great too. Atmosphere inside is fantastic, beautiful wood walls and nice seating.

Located right inside the Neue Gallery, this is a great place to stop by and try some German food before going around Museum Mile. Both times, I have gone on weekends and there is always a wait. However, they opened their cafe in the basement to take customers who wish to dine there instead with the same menu and prices. I have tried their spatzle as well as their trout crepes. Both are delicious and unique in flavor. They seem like small portions, but will definitely fill you up. My boyfriend and I have also tasted their cheese dumplings and their bratwurst. The cheese dumplings are large and dense. Don't underestimate their size! The bratwurst is just as juicy and delicious as well. Don't pass on their desserts either. Last time we had the Viennese chocolate cake which looked dense but was actually very light and not too sweet.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance was amazing.
Loved the intimate vibes. All of the food was delicious, expect for the apple strudel. It was cold and not very enjoyable to eat. However, I would recommend the mozarttorte for dessert.

Cafe SabarskyMuseum Mile (and it's vicinity) has some pleasant restaurants, but Cafe Sabarsky is one of our favorites. Located within the jewel box, Galerie Neue, Cafe Sabarsky highlights the museums Austrian/ German artwork with very good Austrian/ German food. Absent museum membership, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait, in line, outside, for breakfast, lunch or coffee and pastries (reservations are, however, accepted for dinner). The menu is uniquely Austrian/ German with a focus on dessert and Viennese coffees. Salads, sausages, outrageously scrumptious dumplings, chicken, delicious pretzels, and soups are also offered. The Austrian cheese dumplings over cabbage are SO DELICIOUS and always devoured as are the crepes. The Viennese coffee is also enjoyed. The cake/ pastry display is very appetizing. The room is small, classically elegant, very European and utterly civilized. The service is utterly pleasant, so warm and professional (Beata is a sweet gem!). We adore Galerie Neue, and Cafe Sabarsky is such an extraordinarily lovely spot to relax and refuel during a day at the museum.
Be the first to ReplyAlways long wait with tourists traffic.
Food is high quality and ambience is nice, transporting you right from NYC to Europe. All the dishes we ordered were delicious. The schnitzel beats all other places for me.
Be the first to ReplyGuys, this is a definite yes.
The German food was amazing!! The staff was so kind and courteous. What a gem in NYC! I'm so glad we bumped into this beautiful little cafe! Their cocktails are amazing! Yes, highly recommend! The energy in the dining room is warm and soothing. Very guided age! I love the millwork and decor. Love everything about this cafe!

Be the first to Reply5 stars+ experience at Cafe Sabarsky.
Seriously, one of the more delightful meals I've had and it checks so many boxes. Cafe Sabarsky is located inside the Neue Galerie, a museum dedicated to German and Austrian art. We spent the first half of the afternoon viewing the Galerie's exhibit and then headed to Cafe Sabarsky for dinner. We scored a last minute reservation thanks to our very generous friend and we were super excited to try proper German food. The first thing we noticed is the ambiance of Cafe Sabarsky. During the evening, it was darkly lit with a beautiful glowing chandelier and small lamps at each table. I loved the dark, rich color scheme. You really feel like you're at a intimate cafe in Vienna!Wanting to try everything, we opted for the beet and goat cheese salad, the pumpkin soup, Bavarian sausage, and the Tyrolean cheese dumpling. For drinks, we tried the espresso martini and for dessert, we opted for the passion fruit and coconut cake at the recommendation of our friend. Everything, and I mean everything, was absolutely delicious. The beet salad was a generous portion, absolutely loaded with beets and fresh goat cheese with a great honey mustard dressing. I'm still thinking about the pumpkin soup though - spicy, nutty, so flavorful. I want to recreate it, but I know it will be pointless. We had a good laugh at the pale Bavarian sausages, but paired with the pretzel and sweeter grainy mustard, it was truly so flavorful and really melted in your mouth. We also loved the cheese dumpling. It was somewhere between an arancini and a ricotta dumpling, so delicious and perfect for a cold evening. Dessert and drinks were also spectacular. The espresso martini was well made and perfectly balanced. The cakes are gorgeous, and the passion fruit cake had this amazing coconut crust that we really enjoyed.Overall, Cafe Sabarsky was such a great meal experience and we enjoyed every second of our meal. Ask yourself when was the last time you had a good German food experience and get yourself a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyA dessert destination! It's a surprisingly chic museum Cafe.
The regular food offerings are, unsurprisingly, a bit on the pricey side. In parituclar with so much competition in the city. But the ones making the baked goods know their business! If you want to have access to a delightful array of tasty treats this is the place!

I went to the MET and decided to stop by at this cafe because its super close to the museum and central park. There was a line when I arrived which definitely was a good sign because it was cold and windy outside. You do have to show proof of vaccination and id to get in and then het your bag checked by security. The interior was cozy and had a classic old time charm to it. We got seated fairly quick. The dessert menu was extensive and had so many amazing sounding german cakes. I got the hazelnut mousse cake and a hot chocolate. I loved that the hot chocolate had a big dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder on it. The mousse cake was delightful, it had so many different textures that went so well together. It was just the perfect level of sweet without being sickly sweet. The waiters were attentive and brought water before the desserts and drinks arrived. I will definitely be going again!

I would like to share my personal experience at the Neue Galerie, a long time customer of Cafe Sabarsky. one day recently I visited for my usual pastry first time bringing along my own beverage not served at the cafe when I questioned the charge for the whipped cream I was told "you brought in coffee" annoyed I left no tip. However recognizing my hasty decision I returned with a generous tip and chocolates as a gesture of civility. but no amount of apologies, letters could persuade management to allow me back, not in the Neue Galerie or the Cafe Sabarsky. Dissing a loyal senior citizen customer for walking out on a 20% tip?! Yes another example of a lack of humanity in our society in what is supposed to be the hospitality industry.
Be the first to ReplyI always have a fun experience coming to Cafe Sabarsky.
You really feel as if you're in a cafe in Vienna and it's a cool experience walking into the building with the museum, you almost feel like you're in someone's living room. This place is not cheap, so don't think this will be your "quick and easy lunch" after spending a day museum hopping. There will likely be a long wait and you'll spend at least $60 on a very small portioned lunch for two (excluding any alcoholic drinks should you get them). That being said, I love dining here. The restaurant is beautiful, the food feels very traditionally Viennese, and their coffee "kaffee" is high quality. The smoked salmon "sandwich" was around $26 for a very small portion, but flavor was good and presentation was very nice. My boyfriend liked his pretzel and sausage and was satisfied with the amount of food, although I thought the sausage looked like a beluga whale (sorry). This place is really a treat rather than your Sunday brunch go-to spot, but I will definitely be back and am already looking forward to it!
Be the first to ReplyMy server Nathan, was very on point.
The guy had like at tables at the same time and was killin it. He also recommended and poppy seed cake desert that was gluten free. I didn't have high expectations. This cake- I had an out of body experience. I. Left. My. Body. It was so good. Just go and get the poppy seed cake. Jesus.

Cafe Sabarsky was just amazing on a Saturday mid afternoon after Central Park.. Service. Vibe. Dessert. Espresso. ++++++
Be the first to ReplySuper rude service from the cafe staff downstairs.
No WiFi. Definitely not a place to grab coffee, food, and work. More for overpriced dining. Felt like they were watching me like a hawk since my party hadn't arrived. Needless to say they lost our business. They got mad I sat at a 4 person table (even though my group was 4) and there were plenty of other tables available.

Wonderful cafe inside a fabulous museum! The sandwiches, sausages and desserts are outstanding. The ambiance is classy and cozy. Friendly service. The line was a little long to get in. We waited for about 20 minutes in the cold. So try to be there early.I wonder if they take reservations ? Must haves : apple strudel , bratwurst, pretzel with sweet mustard..and their their hot chocolate !

Food 3/5 Location 5/5Wait 4/5Staff 4/5I heard that this was the place to go in New York for cakes so I went there with the sole purpose of getting a great New York cheesecake. Now it may have been that my expectations were too high, but I was rather disappointed by it. Both the top and bottom of the cheesecake had a regular cake consistency which made it very light and nothing like a cheesecake I was expecting. They are right next to Central Park which is phenomenal and east to get to by subway. The wait is outside and split by museum or restaurant and ended up being only 15-20 minutes which was not too bad for New York. The prices were a bit higher than I am use to which coffee being about $10 but that is not unexpected in New York. Overall, It could be that their other options were better and I just chose the wrong one but I would get one of the other cakes if you plan on going.
Be the first to ReplyI was craving German sausage very intensely.
This place is perfect for those who like to eat German sausages.I gobbled down two very thick sausages, which were very tasty.Highly recommend. No further comments.
