Only thing warm is the food
Went to Cafe Murano with two friends for an early dinner. There are two blonde women on reception who seem to find it impossible to smile or greet guests warmly, there is certainly no warm Italian welcome when you arrive. After giving our name we were immediatly told we had the table until 8.15. And that was our first impression. The food was good, we had two courses each, a starter and main. We ordered our 2nd bottle of Gavi (at £47 a bottle), and within ten minutes were told we would have to leave as our time was up, we still had over half a bottle left. I understand the time limit on the table, but often you aren't asked to leave if there isn't a booking to follow. We presumed there wasn't - so why let us buy the 2nd bottle? We were told there were people waiting to be seated, and had to ask for a cork so we could take the bottle with us - how demeaning for a customer? As we left we mentioned to one of the receptionists that there was nobody standing waiting, and she pointed to people sitting at the bar. She said we could have moved there to finish our wine if we'd asked. If we'd asked... Really? And there we were thinking they were the ones in the hospitality industry. It is not a hard decision to choose never to go back.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect for relaxed lunch with old friends.
Food, drink, atmosphere all lovely for a special but not formal lunch with old friends. The oval table is perfect for eight: nobody left neighbourless at the end. But the most important thing in any restaurant is the staff, and the staff at Cafe Murano couldn't have been nicer. Attentive but not interfering; on hand but not hovering; patient and unpushy, they made us feel completely welcome, and though we must have overstayed our timeslot by some margin, we never felt pressured to leave. I'll definitely book again.
Be the first to ReplyAwful
Probably the worst experience I’ve had for many years of eating out. The minestrone soup was served cold, was watery and tasted awful. I was told that that was their version and was treated as a naughty schoolboy by a most officious waiter. The ‘Main’ course of sea bream was also served cold and the portion size was unbelievably small. Altogether a most disagreeable time was had by all four of us! The bill arrived and I was surprised how the seemingly very correct pricing, ballooned with the additional charge of “Service”! The owner may be a Darling of the Culinary World, but I as a very seasoned traveler who has eaten in many Fine Dining Restaurants will not recommend this establishment to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyAn Ok Meal
This restaurant was ok. Not bad and not spectacular. A solid 3/5. We went at 9pm on a Saturday night and although the restaurant was only half-full, our meals took quite a long time to arrive. The green salad was a bowl of lettuce, sparsely dressed. My pumpkin tortelloni was tasty, as was my husband's rigatoni, but my son's steak was completely unseasoned and very fatty. He was disappointed in the quality of the meat.
Be the first to ReplyGreat value great food good consistency all around.
This restaurant you can always guarantee a good meal well cooked at sensible prices…the place is ideal for single people at the bar…wines are reasonably priced and the coffee is excellent…great regular restaurant
Be the first to ReplyFreezing Cold
Food was good and the service was friendly would have given 4 rating. However we were seated next to the door which did not close properly - it was freezing - despite the staff continually trying to close it - every time someone came in or left. Come on Angela - if customers are going to pay top price to eat in your place - give you staff and customers a break by fixing the door and heating the place !!
Be the first to ReplyA surprise joy for Christmastime
This was an unexpected pleasure. From the drama laden curtains guarding the entrance to the thoughtful staff. The food was so beautifully prepared, lovely and delightfully surprising pairings. I even had a second plate of the tortellini for dessert it was so sweetly beautiful. Thank you Giuseppe (manager who solved my wine problems and all my ice cream needs), Lana (who was a welcoming presence from the start and so very caring when Mayfair is so often cold), and Grace (who was attentive, competent and gently paid attention to all the details to make the whole meal so smooth). A precious new memory.
Be the first to ReplyA lovely, relaxed restaurant.
A lovely dinner and a lovely restaurant. Great set menu and a very chilled atmosphere . Thank you Giuseppe!
Be the first to ReplyTasty food and lovely service ….. but need a new front door!!
Lovely restaurant. Great service and actually reasonable prices on the set lunch. Don’t sit near the door when it’s cold outside! Despite the thick curtains and the staff trying to keep the door closed there’s a big gap around the front door!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal!
An absolutely wonderful meal in Cafe Murano! The atmosphere is like being in Italy, with excellent food and wine. Service was efficient. Prices were reasonable for central London. Would recommend going here if you want a great meal!
Be the first to ReplySmashing little restaurant!
Wonderful. Very authentic Italian food which was delicious. The staff were brilliant, attentive without being over the top. We had a late lunch/early supper before the theatre. Would definitely visit again. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Be the first to ReplyUnhelpful service
I was very disappointed with the attitude of the restaurant when I took a fried there for lunch . I had booked for 2 people well In advance but inadvertently booked counter service rather than table service . I asked to change as my guest is in his 80’s . I was told this was not possible in a most abrupt and unfriendly way by the maitre d . We were given two counter seats nearest the kitchen door which was unpleasant. The lunch cost over £150 and was disappointing. My guest did not get the starter he ordered . I gave feedback on the restaurant web site but have not received a response .
Be the first to ReplySimply Italian
Cafe Murano has three branches, the newest and largest in Bermondsey, one in Covent Garden and this the smallest and most sedate branch at the upper end of St. James’s. They all have in addition to a la carte a very competitively priced set menu. The touchstone here is simple Italian food using the freshest ingredients. From the set menu my wife started with a particularly refreshing salad with leaves from the tardivo radish with blood orange and hazelnuts followed by chicken in Parma ham with rocket. I started snacking on arancini followed by a pork chop served with another vegetable I hadn’t come across before, cime di rape or brocholetti with soft green stems. My daughter had ravioli from the children’s menu.I finished with a pear and almond tart.

From phoning to reserve a table, to arriving, being greeted and seated everything was excellent service. The food was perfect and a good choice of wine. Thank you so much Cafe Murano - St James 🙏
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing lunch Experience
Have visited Cafe Murano many occasion but sadly our last visit was disappointing. Went for lunch with my husband and we felt we were on a conveyer belt to sit, eat and get out as quickly as possible! No sooner had we sat down and were told we only had the table for one and half hours. Yet our email confirmation had said two hours. We initially weren’t too concerned as didn’t intend to stay too long. Within minutes the manager then also approached the table and said we only had one and half hours from the time we had arrived. The restaurant was very busy and we felt under pressure to order swiftly, eat fast and leave! I ordered the pumpkin ravioli with sage. When it arrived the taste was very sweet as it had grated very sweet crispy almond Amaretti biscuit on the top which for me spoilt the flavour. I checked on the menu and there was no mention on the menu description of the dish that it had sweet biscuit on top. The waitress wasn’t particularly friendly or helpful when I explained the dish was too sweet for my palate. They didn’t charge us for this dish which wasn’t the point. We left feeling very disappointed with our overall experience.
Be the first to ReplyAngela Hartnett is fab!
Angela Hartnett is a legend. My first foray at this restaurant which has a few of her marquee recipes. Loved, loved it. Will visit again on my next trip over
Be the first to ReplyA great lunch spot in St James . I’ll be back.
I like it here , my second visit & found it great for lunch. Can’t find fault , my first visit, I let the waiter pick the wine !! Never good , this visit I asked opions and much better decision! Overall , I found the staff excellent & the food likewise.
Be the first to ReplyCold pasta dishes on cold plates and excessively salty starters
We were a table of four - two of the starters were so salty I assumed they’d been marinated in the Dead Sea for a month, and the two pasta dish main courses arrived cold and on cold plates. That said, the service and Maitre D’ were great.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food and lovely service
Early dinner for 4 with work colleagues at the end of a business trip to London. Delicious food (my mushroom tagliatelle was superb) and really lovely service - we were very well looked after. Very nice ambiance. Five stars!
Be the first to ReplyBoring but expensive and had to wait a long time.
This is a don't ... unless you like paying for uninteresting food. The location was good. The staff very nice and accommodating. The interior was inviting and hip in a Mayfair-sort of way. IT was busy, so we happily ate at the bar. Alas, the the pastas we ordered for Lunch was uniformly uninteresting.... but it did take over an hour to get to the table and costed a lot. Pasta should not be boring at these prices and if it had been interesting as the menu promised I would not be complaining about the cost or the time. Maybe Angela Hartnett should eat in her restaurant now and than as a quality check because if this is what she thinks is good, Italian pasta makes me wonder if she's ever been to Italy.
Be the first to ReplyBook in person!
We had a very good meal here. The food is good honest Italian cooking and I could eat here happily every day. The pasta as might be expected is excellent. I had a small cavatelli with broad beans and peas followed by the hake - with Kohl Rabi - really not a vegetable you see every day but one I really like, especially pickled as here. My husband had one of the set menus which was also very good. The manager recommended a southern Italian dry white which was excellent. I am surprised to see criticisms of the bread from other reviewers as I found myself enjoying focaccia for the first time ever. Our hotel had reserved for us but unfortunately not passed on our request for a socially distanced table and the allocated table was boxed in on all sides. When I explained the reason the manager did his best to accommodate us and certainly we had a much less stressful experience at the table we were then offered. We appreciated the efforts as it was very busy - but next time we will reserve in person.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Italian restaurant
We book based on reviews and our expectations were exceeded. Over two nights we tried several pastas, plus the risotto. The chicken and special veal chop were excellent. Our several servers and hostess were all first class.
Be the first to ReplyA surprising let down
I was excited to visit Angela Hartnett’s pasta restaurant…but sadly it fell very short of expectations. My GF had the hake. It was ok, nothing to write home about and served with a couple of leaves, pickled kohlrabi and grapefruit slices. It really neither looked nor tasted like a dish you’d expect from a protégé of Chef Ramsey. I had the rabbit anolini, summer vegetables & braising juices which I eagerly anticipated. I adore stuffed fresh pasta and eagerly waited thinking of those rich gamey rabbit flavours in beautiful little parcels of fresh pasta… and the braising juice they’d be in. What arrived wasn’t impressive. I couldn’t have identified the filling as rabbit at all. It was just bland in every aspect. The braising juice was ok, but again nothing special. At £19 it worked out about £2 per disappointing parcel. We decided against any further food and sought dessert elsewhere. With a beer, a Prosecco, a wine, water and two dishes it was £100 worth of underwhelming food. On a positive note, our waiter was superb!
Be the first to ReplyJust love Angela’s outpost St. James.
My fourth time here, seven years between visits. Perfect for early fixed price dinner with no fussing and fawning. The food is excellent value and the wines sublime. Service is impeccable in every way and we never felt rushed to vacate the restaurant. Quality ingredients and consistency are key here and the atmosphere is buzzy even for an early meal. The best. And oh, they remember you even years later!
Be the first to ReplyBirthday celebration
Visited with large family group. Food and service good. Surprised that the there wasn’t anything to mark our celebration. No mention by the staff. This was the reason for our family trip to London and our choice of a special restaurant. Shame .
