The free bread and the salads were excellent.
They were out of one of the wines and one of the dessert. My wife asked to substitute shrimp for clams in the pasta and uncharge was $6 per shrimp, right per shrimp. She opted for the standard, vongole, which was fine. The main courses were all good, but a bit too oily. Still we had a great time.

This hidden gem is off the beaten path a few blacks south of the popular Calif St in Palo Alto. The most striking thing about this pkace is the charming courtyard as you enter. On a warm evening THIS is where you want to be seated. Just as excellent is the creative Italian cuisine. We had a party of 8, and everyone raved about their entree. Try this place....you won't be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyCaffe Riace is a terrific find.
It's hidden on a quiet street close to downtown Palo Alto, with dedicated parking right across the street. We hosted a dinner for 10 guests. To a person, everyone was wowed by the evening. The food was nothing short of terrific -- delicious and generous. You could taste the freshness of their ingredients. I'm Italian and have annoyingly high restaurant standards, which Caffe Riace exceeded. The courses just kept coming, all excellent. The servers were knowledgable and very pleasant. It was a great evening we won't soon forget.
Be the first to ReplyI was at Caffe Riace for a group function.
The setting is fantastic. The food was excellent (I had the gnocchi al pesto...delicious, though nobody could possibly surpass my nonna's gnocchi). The service was very good. A delightful experience as a background to a great event. Mille grazie!

The lasagna here is heavenly! We ordered this after it was recommended by the owner and it was fully devoured despite its large size. I also really enjoyed the arancini appetizer. The calamari appetizer was okay, I'd rather eat more arancini or try another app next time. The service was great, we asked to make a pasta dish spicy and were brought a side of a family recipe spicy oil that my husband loved. There's also a beautiful fountain and patio dining area outside if the weather is nice enough.

You know those moments when you want to celebrate, and you also just wanna stay home, but you don't want to cook, and you just want a delicious bowl of pasta? Well, even if you've never quite experienced this range of emotions, lemme tell you about the most magical hidden (if you're not a PA local) gem! Coffee Riace has all the comfort and joy of home (in the way you feel when you are here)- plus great food, great wine, excellent service, and a water feature (what?!?! I've always wanted a backyard fountain ) while still feeling down to earth and so warm and friendly. The humans that work here are happy to be here, and the service is unparalleled because of it. We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy, who was so kind and inviting- careful to check in at every junction. We shared our news and she shared a with us. I love feeling like we are all a part of something bigger. Nico also chatted with us for a while. It feels like community, like family. I cannot wait to come back, hopefully before the next milestone, and hear what's happening with my new friends over glasses of wine and delicious food! Thank you Nancy and Caffe Riacce!
Be the first to ReplyThis place has absolutely wonderful outdoor atmosphere.
The music (Big Band) played very much enhanced the romantic environment. As a matter of fact, we loved the music so much we asked the waiter what the name of the CD was. He said he didn't know and was unwilling to find out for us. When we indicated we would like to ask the owner or the restaurant manager, he said they were not there, and that he didn't know if they were going to be there. For the food, we had the beet/farro salad, bruschetta, chicken parmesan and Linguine Tutto Mare. Both the beet salad and bruschetta were delicious. The house-made bread would have been spectacular if not for the big salt crystals sprinkled on top that made the otherwise extraordinary bread too salty. The chicken parmesan and the seafood linguine seemed to share the same basic tomato paste based sauce. The sauce was a big disappointment --- globby thick and muddy, overpowering both the chicken and the seafood. We were expecting fresh tomato sauce for these pasta dishes at such higher end restaurant as Caffe Riace. The fish in the seafood linguine was also overcooked, though seafood amount was generous. A restaurant always feels more pleasant and welcoming when the owner is present. We used to love this restaurant, but things have changed since the owner stopped overseeing the restaurant during hours of operation.

It used to be 5 stars food & 5 stars ambience. For the last 10 years it's been 2 or 3 stars food and 5 stars ambience. I see the owner responding on Yelp which is great but the responses seem to indicate total denial so I would gladly take a non-response in exchange for truly taking an honest look at this place. It's not that the recipes are bad; it's more that sometimes things seem strange tasting - like an ingredient is old, or meat can be impossibly tough and/or odd tasting. First of all, this place is special to my wife and I which means we will overlook a lot of things because we want this to be a place that we go back to; but I don't think I'll get her to go back anymore as we've been PO'd at this place enough times over a course of ~10 years that we can't see anything changing. We went from regulars to having a series of bad experiences (with the food) and just not wanting to go. After a few years, we tried it again recently but her dish was un-edible and some elements of the entire meal were off. Her comment during our last visit was, "maybe in another 3 years". In the early 00's the food was fresh, I brought co-workers for lunch, friends for dinner - even my Sicilian mother - this is the only place I've ever taken my mother outside of NY. My wife and I had some great dinners there and it was typically busy. We thought it had changed ownership some years ago because it went downhill so badly but when I asked the waiter a couple of months ago he went on and on about how it's all the same and they are busy and doing great. ...Really? What we started to experience: There is rarely more than 2 other parties while we are there. Food quality is up and down and we've had some bad meals - and some good ones but we just can't trust it at this point. One day, no one showed up for work except the cook who was very embarrassed and tried to help us but it was a disaster (and it was on a special day - her birthday or our anniversary or something like that and we ended up at a burger place all dressed up that night). After our last meal where we had spotty food quality, we started thinking of those places where they do such little business that you start to imagine an episode of Restaurant Impossible or Kitchen Nightmares back there. Sitting at this place is pure joy though. It's a wonderful place to be. But if it turned into a Chipotle we'd enjoy it more, unfortunately.

Family owned and run. I watched them build this place then came on opening nite. The foods amazing as well as the family! Craig

We've been coming here for 25 years, and I have to say, ever since the native Italian owner retired (I think) and handed this restaurant down to his son to run, the service went way downhill. He has too many restaurants to run, I think. The night we came, there was a total of one server. One. And there were at least 4-5 tables and I believe a private dinner going in the back room. It was a cold night, so I believe all seating was in the dining room. Some of The food was very good, like my lamb and the the crab pasta, but the seafood risotto was teaming with salt (as was the risotto on my plate below my lamb). It was completely inedible. Terrible. We would've had to take water pills for days had we eaten it. The cooks *really* need to taste-test the food they're cooking throughout the cooking process. Imperative! For the caliber of this restaurant (tables with table cloths! Expensive prices!), there's no excuse. And it's sad, too, because I considered this one of THE best Italian restaurants in the area.

Really poor service, even though there were only two tables with patrons. The food was fair, the prices were too high. I used to love this place, but I won't return.
Be the first to ReplyI've been to Caffe Riace a few times in the last 6 months
I've been to Caffe Riace a few times in the last 6 months and have very mixed experiences which sadly ends with a low rating for the food. The atmosphere is 5 stars, with their lovely courtyard and nice dining room. But I will say in the courtyard you may get a bit of an eyeful if seated at the wrong angle of the David sculpture. The staff is always friendly yet too often understaffed. The food is where they only earn 3 stars. The antipastos are good, especially the Arancine and Fritto Misto, except the batter seems to fall off more than not. I've had the squid ink pasta with seafood a few times, and although it can be flavorful if you get some sauce in a bite, the seafood itself is rubbery, and it has never been served when it's hot, only luke warm. The desserts are a true disappointment with the exception of the cheesecake. I want to love this place but it's getting hard to do when my meals continue to disappoint.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a hidden gem in Palo Alto.
Wonderful outdoor patio. Service was very attentive and friendly. Lovely, romantic indoor tables. Good for groups or private parties or by yourself. Simple wine list. Traditional Sicilian food. I'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my FAVORITE Italian Restaurants.
The food is beyond AMAZING. my only problem is the cannelloni is so good (OMG the sauce), I never order anything else. Their burrada grilled pear salad is so flavorful. The ambiance with the courtyard fountains makes me feel like I am in an Italian Villa.

Had a dinner with 6 friends at Caffe Riace Tuesday night and had a very positive experience. Beautiful space (both for indoor and outdoor seating), excellent food, and great service. And even easy to find a parking space! Shout out to Nancy who was very helpful, responsive, and friendly.

Eh I was expecting some mind-blowing Italian food but the decor was 5 stars and the food was probably 3.5 stars (compared to the Italian food I've grown up with in NY and have had in Europe). I found it uncomfortable and outdated the waiter only addressed and made eye contact with my SO and brother-in-law... also handed the check to my BIL when we were splitting the bill. I'm not returning.

We had a business dinner of 15 people at Caffe Riace and had a better experience. The atmosphere of the courtyard was wonderful and made a nice change as opposed to being indoors. The staff were all so friendly, continously checked in on all of our guests and took our orders quickly and effciently. The food came out all at the same time which is much appreciated- when looking after a big group. All food was well cooked- Steak was great! All guests commented on a good choice for a formal group dinner and overall we couldn't asked for a better night- everything was easy from start to finish, Thank you Caffe Riace! I highly recommend this cafe for large group parties.
Be the first to ReplyIn this time of a labor shortage, I am very patient.
But last night's experience was too much. There was no hostess and one waitress with one absolutely useless bus boy. The service was slow. The orders came out incorrectly. The food was not good. The pasta was more than al dente. It was undercooked. It could've been a tough night with people calling in sick. But I fear that owners are booking more tables than their staffs can handle. That's certainly what my experience felt like last night. This is no place to spend your hard earned money.
