To say that Mexican cuisine cannot be fine and expensive is just ignorant. The food here is great. Don't listen to the one star review. Why can a 9 seat sushi restaurant charge 300 for nigiri pre fixe but you can't be charged 30 for tostada?

Cala is one of my go-to San Francisco restaurants and I really hope it reopens soon after closing because of the pandemic. The 3.5-star rating on Yelp is absolute bullshit. People complaining about prices in San Francisco are a little bit delusional. I was extremely excited when chef Gabriela Cámara from Contramar, one of Mexico City's best restaurants, opened an SF restaurant, and it has never disappointed.Even if the food was mediocre, I would continue to support this restaurant for going out of its way to hire formerly incarcerated individuals. Luckily, the food is delicious. The ceviche, trout tostadas, rockfish tacos, and sopes are some of my favorites. So so good.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely love Cala.
A few stand outs:- Any cocktail.- Trout tostadas- Quesadillas with mushrooms- The sweet potato! - The fish, w/ green and red sauceI really, really hope they open back up again. This is a lovely restaurant with a beautiful space. I've been to the MX City restaurant as well (Contramar) and honestly preferred Cala. I miss their food.

Amazing food! This is authentic food! Be prepared to pay a little extra but a little bit goes a long way. This is quality you can taste!
Be the first to ReplyI have to say I visited this restaurant a few times.
We were looking for something small to eat. For appetizers we ordered Trout toastadas with chipotle, avocado and fried leeks; soles playeros and crab toastadas with celery. All were really good! Also the list of wine was good. White wines are my favorite.I definitely recommend coming here when they reopen their doors!

Cala is such a special restaurant! I really do not understand the low rating here. I had previously been to Contramar and felt like Cala transported me on a vacation back to Mexico. The beautiful interior made me feel like I was no longer in San Francisco - and the delicious drinks and food really blew me away. I will say the signature rockfish was not as good in SF as Contramar, but the tostadas and everything else were EXCEPTIONAL. I went to celebrate after nailing my GRE and hope that post-COVID there will be more occasions to celebrate so I can go back.
Be the first to ReplyI really thought Cala was an excellent excellent meal.
The flavors were so rich and strong, and you could tell everything was exceptionally high quality. I've been to its sister restaurant in CDMX and the famous tuna tostadas were comparable in both places. I also had one of the sopes and then a main course fish and they were all great as well. I wish I had ordered the rockfish since I've heard good things, but next time! The restaurant itself is also beautiful. Only thing is that it's not the cheapest place -- best if you're planning to do a nice night out

This place was pretty good, but for the amount of money we spent ($270 for 3 people), the vegetarian options could have been better. Still the vibe is great and the company was better so I had a decent night. The good:Peliroja (cocktail) - beautifully done and paired really well with my food. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their cocktails as well.Avocado Tostadas - although a relatively simple dish, the chile and pickled daikon was a great touchSopes Playeros, Quesadillas - both of these dishes were delicious, filling, satisfyingThe bad:Little Gems - this is literally just lettuce grilled with some beans. Really disappointed by this.
Be the first to ReplyShocked by how bad this "fancy food" was.
The environment is obviously very chic, and I really wanted to like this place -- but the food was the most disappointing food I've ever had in San Francisco. Maybe this was just me but I found the food bland, lacking seasoning, and trying way to hard to be fancy. I would have been willing to pay these prices if the food was amazing -- but it's just not. Sometimes basic, classic flavors are the way to go. Really wanted to like this place so super I'm super bummed. I would not go back or recommend this to a friend.

You can usually find some seating at the bar without needing a reservation but a resie would be ideal. The ambiance is nice and lively. The food is generally good. The dungeness crab tostada was not great and needed more seasoning. However the fideos with clams was delicious and reminded me of the fideos at Casa Mono in nyc.
