Great food, but just an overall rip-off
First, the food was really good here, so don't get me wrong. The issue is just the portion sizes. Shareable family style means that it is enough to share, at least I thought so. Our table of 4 was having to take one little portion of an entree plate that came out and divide it up. It's really embarassing how little food is provided. With the labnehs we had to ADD a pita and got ONE for 4 people. With the Uni Toast we had to get 2 orders for $58 for one tiny little piece of bread each.... (It was good as I said) The pasta dish was excellent, but for 2x the price and 1/4 of the portion size of other resturants, it just sours the whole experience. Oh and of course the entrees are ala carte so you don't even get a few veggies with it which cost nothing. Finally, the server explained everything so fast and when we were talking that a lot is missed. When the bill finally came there is 20% (+4%) gratuity already included which I missed. So I had to call back later and have that adjusted. Our service was not 20% worth, and I especially don't like when it is added by default avoiding letting the customer determine the quality of service. I suppose this experience is good to remember to be vigilent when choosing resturants and look out for blantant rip-offs, no matter the quality of the taste. Most expensive resturant bill I've had here and I left feeling hungry and ate some mac and cheese when I got home.
Be the first to ReplySome good and some bad, not worth a visit.
Recently, our group of five ventured into Calle San Diego, eager to dive into their much-raved culinary offerings and the curated Chef’s meal leading one through five courses. We opted for the Chef's Choice, priced at $75 per person, anticipating a feast of fantastic quality and creativity. Instead, we were met with a few incredible highs and too many unfortunate lows. Let's start with the highlights: The hummus, babaghanoush, and pita are the best in San Diego. Each bite was a delightful journey through rich, creamy textures and perfectly balanced flavors. However, not all was smooth sailing. The hangar steak was a letdown, with an odd texture and lack of flavor, failing to live up to the standard set by the rest of the meal. A notable mention must be made of the duck ragu – a dish that shone brightly among the courses. Unfortunately, this high was met with a low when we tasted the agnolotti – it was so excessively salty that it crossed into the realm of inedibility. An unsettling aspect of our experience was the chef's presence. Rather than visiting our table, which was right in front of the open kitchen, he observed us from behind the counter throughout our meal, lending a somewhat uncomfortable air to our dining experience. A point of contention was the billing strategy. The restaurant adds a service charge to cover labor costs – an unnecessary practice. Adjusting menu prices would be a more transparent approach. Additionally, a mandatory 20% gratuity was included, which we felt contributed to the subpar service we received. One incident that stood out was when a member of our party requested ice for his water. The bus person's outright refusal by shaking her head no, followed by the need to involve the manager, was a service faux pas. The staff's eagerness to clear our table while we were eating and their premature offer of to-go boxes while we were still enjoying our last course added to the feeling of being rushed. This was particularly perplexing given that the restaurant was still a third full and nowhere near closing time. In conclusion, while Calle San Diego does offer some culinary delights, the overall experience could be better served by more consistent dishes and a less-than-ideal service approach. For those looking to explore San Diego's dining scene, there are undoubtedly many other establishments that promise a more harmonious and satisfying experience.
Be the first to ReplyA hopping new place
One of us had made a reservation, which included a deposit. We parked in the adjacent parking garage, and the parking was paid for by the restaurant. We were seated in a busy, noisy room. Our server explained that sharing food was the usual there. We ordered some fancy cocktails. We shared our first course. Best of that course was the beet salad. The four of us each chose an entre from duck to shrimp to pasta. All were very good, but maybe not worth the prices.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food all around
Food was exceptional, in particular squid ink pasta, tuna tartare, pumpkin pasta, ricotta & focaccia starter, and drinks. Dessert was very small though.
Be the first to ReplyIt's Too Spicy and Expensive
The food was expensive. The drinks were very small pours. It is so noisey that you can hardly hear the person in front of you without leaning in and straining to hear. The main course didn't come with any hint of a vegetable at all, not even 1 or 2 small pieces of anything. The shaved carrots tasted like you were eating vinegar and were not to my taste whatsoever. They automatically charge you 20% gratuity for the waiter who could be horrible or good which I don't think is any incentive for them to be a good waiter because they get 20% regardless. And then they charge you a 4% fee which again is for the servicing which you have no choice over. Who gets this and what is it really for, and is this legal to charge this additional fee? There was way too much time before we would see the waiter. The gave us our silverware in a box on the table for each of us to take out of the box instead of giving each person their silverware which I found to be lazy and not great service. Most of the food on the menu wasn't to my liking from the description except for one item on the entire menu. If not for this one item, there would have been nothing for me to order. All the food seems to be spicy and the others said their food was too spicy. They do pick up parking which is the only plus I found in the entire experience. Needless to say, I would never go back to this restraunt or recommend this restaurant to anyone for any reason.
Be the first to ReplyAtmosphere: trendy, classy, big and loud. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.
Amazing all around atmosphere, service and food. If you want a certain day and time make reservations in advance on TOCK, in addition there is a $21. security reservation deposit which is deducted from the bill upon your arrival. I had made 7:15 Wednesday night dinner reservations for two. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated at a table for 2. The restaurant is beautiful, big and loud. Conner our server was amazing, very nice, informative and attentive. The restaurant is "Modern Mediterranean". Conner recommend family style sharing 3-4 dishes. When my friend and I travel we tend to share a lot so we can order and taste a variety of dishes anyway. We ordered cocktails, the Late Bloomer and the De La Montana, while looking over the menu... cocktails were amazing! LOL, since it was just the 2 of us, I went for the hard core dishes to try. We started off with the Beef Tartare, then moved to the Harissa Grilled Lamb Chops and Duck. I'm not a big Carb person, but I did order the House Pita with the Call Fire Hot Sauce for my friend. Honestly, with those dishes it was perfect, the duck breast was a whole breast and there were 4 meaty lamb ribs. The dishes were excellent. Loved all the flavors. Atmosphere: trendy, classy, big and loud. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.
Be the first to ReplyPretentious and overpriced !
The tiniest portions of food I have ever seen. The advice from the server was to dine ‘family style’ and with that in mind we ordered a few appetizers from the brads and spreads menu. A single whole pita was served with the minuscule smear of babaganoush, which I then had to cut into small pieces to share. The other appetizers were equally tiny and equally as expensive. We all decided that we would order an entree each…….of course these didn’t come with veggies! The crispy potatoes were like croutons that you couldn’t get a fork into, and the carrots, were wafer thin raw slices in a bitter sauce. The plate of mushrooms was so tiny that only two servings could be obtained by scraping around the bowl. The service was good and the wait staff helpful, but I got the impression that it was a place to be seen in rather than a place to enjoy. Extraordinarily expensive too! Will not go back.
Be the first to ReplyReally Disappointed
Second (and last) time we dine at Callie. They sell the family style to serve small end expensive portions along with $35 wine corkage. When your hot, you can get arrogant. We brought in our own wine and had opened the bottle to decant and replaced the cork. After the server reopened the bottle, he returned and said the manager informed him he could not serve an open bottle. I asked for the Manager and she told us that we could drink what was in our glasses but no more, per ABC laws. Of course I asked if were already drinking the the wine, what difference does it make. We then ordered a bottle from the restaurant. It was a birthday dinner and we informed the server of the date. When the check came, we were charged $35 for the corkage for wine we could not finish. And of course charged for all desserts I again asked for the manager and told Nathan that he should have done something. He said he disagreed. And he lost us forever.
Be the first to ReplyEhhh I would skip dinner but for for drinks
The drinks were great. We got the Negroni and the tau Maru. And the wine! I would go back for any day. The food was good, it just wasn’t knock your socks off, which is what I had expected. We had the veggies/avacado labneh, kanapachi, tomato fattoush, pasta special with morels, and lamb dole and the tahini cookie. They were all prepared beautifully and they tasted nice and fresh, but it didn’t blow me away. I expected more from this place. Perhaps it is what we ordered, a lot were salads and probably could have used some type of carb?
Be the first to ReplyTop notch private dining experience
Just came back from a private dining experience with 12 people and I cannot breath as I am so full. I could list everything that was great but it's easier to list everything I hated - NOTHING
Be the first to ReplyThe highlight of our San Diego trip
We savored the five course tasting menu paired with a few cocktails, though we were very intrigued by other dishes coming out of the kitchen. The Chef’s training and command of the kitchen shine in the food prepared with local organic ingredients. Sublime flavors and the professional servers added to such a wonderful dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyI'm glad I went. I wouldn't go again.
It's posh and expensive. The food is inventive and flavorful, though nothing magically special. Family style dining. I'm glad I went, but I am not running back anytime soon.
Be the first to ReplyTerrific place to eat
Came here for my birthday dinner with friends and I'm glad I did. First, there's a parking garage for Callie guests. This makes it easy to park and get to the restaurant. The decor was very hip and contemporary. The menu is Mediterranean-based and prices are not for the faint of heart. The staff was very cordial and our server (Bethany) was terrific. All the food was superb and worth the price. One of the most memorable dinners ever in San Diego. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyA LITTLE DISAPPOINTING
With this being touted as the greatest new restaurant in San Diego, we had to give it a try. The food all is pretty good, but doesn't quite live up to the hype. Dips, appetizers, and entrees are inventive. They just didn't impress as much as they should have. The Aleppo chicken is a good example. It gets rave reviews as their most popular dish but, once you get past the interesting seasoning on the crispy skin, it's just normal chicken underneath. Nothing wrong with it, just not out of the ordinary. I liked the room. It's spacious and comfortable, though the noise level from the background music is too loud for comfortable conversation. More annoying is the billing policy. They add a 4% surcharge that they describe as ensuring competitive compensation/benefits for staff. That should be built into the basic pricing, not added on. Then they add am automatic 20% tip. I probably would tip that anyway, but it should be my choice. You can ask to have it removed or reduced, but that puts you in a position of conflict with your server. So, I'm glad I checked it out, but not sure I would go back.

Callie is a great restaurant. They serve Mediterranean food while allowing for a great variety of styles etc. I highly recommend sharing so you can try different things. Service is great. The only small issue is that it is a bit loud since it is alwsys full! You need to book way ahead of time unless you can eat at 9pm.
Be the first to ReplyFresh, Mediterranean & Delicious
This place is phenomenal. They are serving what appears on the surface to be simple food but precision of a Jedi master filled with flavor explosion combinations. I have been to this place at least 4 times in last 6 months and it’s always good. It has a bib gourmand but in my humble opinion it’s a 1 Michelin star restaurant. I think it’s only a matter of time before the guide gives this place a star. You don’t have to be so fancy shamncy to get a star. Just depressed excellent food which is what Callie does. Lastly get the alleppo chicken!! Don’t miss it at all! It is simply a must have. Trust me.
Be the first to ReplyBest birthday meal
Had my adult daughter's birthday dinner here. One of the few restaurants in which we enjoyed every dish and multiple bottles of wine. Coming back for my birthday as well.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service good food
You will probably need to book a table days in advance as the tables go fast.
We got lucky and got a seating at the bar.
We ordered fantastic Hummus for a starter.
My daughter got the Duck and fancied that a lot, I got Halibut ok but a little dry for my taste (won’t fault them for that).
Even though it is a fairly big restaurant the acoustics was great and it was possible to have a conversation.
Absolutely a place you need to go
Mediterranean feast for the win!
The Mediterranean Feast is a steal at $65 per person- It is a high-quality tasting menu that was definitely more than enough food. We were a party of five and we still had food left over!
Everything from the veggie dishes to the meat dishes to the dessert were spot on and sublime. We also had several of their cocktails are just as exquisite.
We received terrific service from all staff- we felt we were at a high tier restaurant.
Anytime I am in San Diego, I will be sure to come here again.
Not worth the $
Food is meant to be shared with the party and is cycled from left to right on the menu. Although some interesting flavors the portions are incredibly small given the price. The chicken is $30 for a breast. Pappardelle is an entree perhaps for a preschooler. Know there is a lot of buzz about it in San Diego but certainly not worth the money.
Be the first to ReplyA great addition to downtown! Stellar!
Wow! What a great addition to the downtown restaurant scene. Callie has a really great vibe and excellent service but what sets it apart is the very intriguing selection of food. Everything we had was stellar! A place for foodies without a doubt! The chef/owner (Travis) is very engaging and involved in all facets of the operation. We can’t wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food, Incredible Ambiance
We had the incredible good fortune to dine at Callie during the first weekend it opened and it was INCREDIBLE!!!! We were six friends looking for a restaurant with great food but also one where we could enjoy the food in a fun, friendly atmosphere. Callie exceeding our expectations on every level! As soon as we entered we knew we were at the right place. We were greeted immediately by the staff and since we were early we decided to sit at the amazing bar for a drink. Our bartender James welcomed us and we asked for some suggestions! James not only gave us their cocktail list, he then proceeded to highlight a few and asked us about the type of drink we were looking for. We saw several people with espresso martinis which looked really good but decided to save those for after dinner (BTW - superb!). We opted for several of James' creations each of which were VERY tasty! We highly recommend the C'est La Vie! The evening was off to a great start. When we got to our table we were able to watch the chef and his staff at work in the open kitchen. And the best was yet to come - the food!!! The six of us opted for the Mediteranean Feast which enabled us to try lots of the dishes on the menu which were served family style. The hummus and babaganoush were served with piping hot pita bread. I could have made a meal on those two items alone! But then we got the tuna, salmon and parma ham. I am not a beet person so skipped the salmon, however the tuna was outstanding! How they make tomato water taste that good is beyond me. And the parma ham on house made baguette was scrumptious, salty and sweet. Our next course included artichokes, peas and mint - simple and simply delicous but the star here was the mushrooms - setas con migas. I literally took a piece of pita from the previous course and wiped the bowl clean! The summer agnolini was next and it tasted like it had just come from the garden - light, refreshing and the pasta was cooked perfectly! I have to admit we may have ordered a bit too much food and I was concerned that I would not eat the main course but when those lamb chops arrived I had to try one (okay, two) and that tzatsiki was just divine. I did try a small piece of the aleppo chicken and it was incredibly juicy and flavorful. Next time I will save room for more. Two of our party had shellfish allergies so we did not order any clams or shrimp. The entire meal was served with plenty of time in between courses to share and digest and think about what was coming up! This kind of shared dining was so much fun and really provided us with a great night out! And at the end of the meal, the chef Travis, stopped by our table to chat! He is so passionate about his craft and it certainly showed in his food! And yes, we did order espresso martinis for dessert. Thank you James!
