the staff was cold and unhelpful. waited at the entrance for 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. three peope working there were having a discussion at the end of the bar and the bartender never made eye contact or said hello, the restaurant was not that busy. after a while a young gentleman came over and whisked us to a table without saying much and not waiting for us to sit down before walking away. we waited for menus but found out when he returned there were none and we had to use our phones -- a huge turn off. After a bit of cajoling he offered us a tablet. when I clicked on the wrong button I got strange internet searches. basically the menu felt inaccesible and the waiter was of little or no help. We decided to leave. no one asked us what was wrong as we were leaving but we did get the evil eye from the bartender. this level of service would have been fine in a neighborhood bar but not in a high end restaurant with a michelin chef. perhaps they feel they do not need to treat customers with respect because of their reputation. beware bougie restaurants with stuck up staff!

A high level tapas bar!!! The best is the coziness, , it's food, each tapa is a journey and lively, but not loud atmosphere (a visited place it is)!!! Whatever the weather or the time of the day is outside, you can escape to the happy world of canalla bistro. Don't miss it. The price is ok for that kind of place and surely worth it.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was right across the street from our apartment
This place was right across the street from our apartment and we were looking for somewhere to eat that was close. First I will say - make reservations! We were very lucky to get in last minute. We went early and the place filled up quickly. We ordered from the tasting menu that allowed us to try 8 or so different items. I'm so glad we went with that as each of them was so interesting and some were ones we might not have chosen ourselves. Everything was wonderful! The cocktails are very creative. Try the one with curry in it - I've never had anything like it and it was really good. Highly recommend this place!

Great food! Little expensive but was a yummy first meal for the first night out in Valencia
Be the first to ReplyAfter learning Canalla Bistro is a 2018 Michelin Star
After learning Canalla Bistro is a 2018 Michelin Star restaurant, we arrived here for lunch on Thursday as a group of 3, without reservations and was able to find a table. But this place sure fills up quickly! The lunch tasting menu is a must! I loved the unique flavours in the sauces and the Asian infusion throughout all dishes. My favourite was the tiramisu dessert, as it was made into a light and pleasing texture, instead of cake form. Loved it, it's better than the traditional tiramisu cake. The atmosphere is modern artistic. Majority of the patrons were made up of local employees dressed in business attire, during the Thursday lunch hour. Service was quick, efficient, yet friendly. I would come here again !
Be the first to ReplyI absolutely cannot say enough about this place.
It felt like Jesus was tap dancing on my tongue. Everything we ordered was delicious. My friend and I are backpacking Europe and this was by far our favorite meal so far. I've been a waitress, bartender, and manager in the states...the customer service experienced here is something restaurants dream of and strive to achieve. Every single employee we walked past acknowledged us genuinely and with a smile, even though they weren't directly helping us. They all seemed to be working together seamlessly. Even the expo chef stopped talking to the kitchen and greeted us as we walked past and then went back to work. I was amazed. Even upon leaving the bartender was making drinks and he told us to have a good night. We even got squeezed in without a reservation (our mistake we were unaware)If I could give more stars I would. If you're in Valencia do yourself a favor and make this one of your stops. You won't regret it. Bravo to you guys!Side note: I'm Brazilian and they even nailed the caipirinha drink, it was amazing.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a full-scale, vast, super pretentious, dimly-lit
This is a full-scale, vast, super pretentious, dimly-lit restaurant, not a "hipster tapas bar", as Yelp categorises it. So, if you are imagining a cool little hipster bar selling fun twists on tapas, this is not it.The prices are on the steeper end, at nearly €5 for a tiny pork taco, or two tiny cod fritters that essentially taste like those crab rangoon things you get in Chinese restaurants in the US. Most of all, I didn't like the service. Every member of staff blanked us for the first five minutes of standing in the doorway (we were the only ones), and we couldn't even tell if the place was actually open. Just as we were about to turn around and walk out, a hostess came over and proceeded into a condescending speech about how lucky we were to get a table as walk-ins. It made us want to immediately walk out. We settled on just ordering a few small plates and getting the hell out of there. The waiter looked confused, and instead of making a helpful suggestion about what we could order instead, just took our order. We were then presented with two sad looking tacos on a massive fake corn thing that was designed to hold four pieces; one tiny cod fritter and some dry-ass fries. Food was gone in 15 minutes. It then took 30-40 minutes to get the bill, after asking three times. Insane. When it finally arrived, we waited another 10 minutes for the payment to be taken, and eventually just walked out, leaving the money on the table. We were then chased to the front door by a waiter, who asked if we had paid. If you're going to go, go when you want to spend money and have fun trying out what they have. Their presentation is the best part. The food quality is so-so. I've honestly had way better, and I've received way better service elsewhere. I imagine the service would be more attentive if you are spending more money, haha.
Be the first to ReplyAs in many European countries, dining in Spain on a Sunday
As in many European countries, dining in Spain on a Sunday becomes largely a question of "what is open?" rather than "what is best?" and with a flight leaving Valencia early the following morning the situation seemed even more limited than usual, most places offering Paella closing after lunch service and every Michelin Guide spot in town dark all day, Chef Ricard Camarena's Canalla Bistro fortunately standing in for his eponymous Starred space and fairing very well.Described as the Chef's most eclectic restaurant, his reputation at both Ricard Camarena Restaurant and Mercat Central's CentralBar built on local sourcing, good Produce and Fish, Canalla Bistro sets out to take guests on a "gastronomic trip around the world" to some of the Camarena's favorite countries, the 20h00 opening finding a queue of locals in addition to a few out of town visitors from Russia, Slovenia and the United States.Bridging the price-point of his other two restaurants, the intention here to be both globally inspired and affordable to all, it was shortly upon entering the Bar area of Canalla that reservations were confirmed by one of two men before guests were handed off to a team of servers, the seating tight amidst kitschy decorations including everything from chalk artwork to bathroom signs, Chef's whites and bicycles.Similar to many gastropubs in terms of volume and energy, the music sometimes too loud and the conversations of others often difficult to ignore, it was with both Food and Beverage menus in hand that parties ranging from one to twelve guests were invited to explore for several minutes before placing orders, the offering of several "half-portions" a welcome sight that eventually led to eleven items being ordered in addition to a brisk Cava-based version of the Kir Royale. Now open since 2012 and only improving with time according to many, several whimsical service pieces including an enormous ear of Corn plus a Pig's Head used to serve plates around the room, it was with three small bites from "A Very Different Touch of Fry" that the meal got underway, both the fried Baccala and Chicken Stew Croquetta hitting all the expected notes while the Nigiri Beijing Duck was curiously delicious with shredded Meat shielded from the fryer by a wall of Vinegar-scented Rice that took on a crunchy shell without becoming oily itself.Moving next to two Salads, the descriptions and half-portion availability making each more appealing than the typical pile of greens, it was with both plates served simultaneously that a "Russian Thai Salad" competed with thinly sliced Squash for center spotlight, the former both sweet and spicy with the toasted Coconut playing well off flavors of Tomatoes and Peanuts. Growing in heft and portion as the meal progressed, the order in reality enough that two adults could have left happily sated for under €100 total, it was with item number six that Camarena and team presented several slices of roast Pork with crispy Skin amidst a tangle of Greens plus toasted Quinoa and orbs of mashed Sweet Potatoes, everything about the dish pure comfort Food while the follow-up thick-crust "PizzaJapo" was an odd but delicious way to present Okonomiyaki with the salinity of Bonito flakes given added depth by way of Mozzarella and Bacon.Previously winning a Sol Repsol award with special mention of the housemade Pastrami, a Sandwich intended to honor Katz's Delicatessen performing well in terms of the fatty Beef's texture and spice profile but doing the classic a disservice by adding Cabbage and toasted Cereal Bread instead of the Lower East Side Rye, it was with half of the dish packed up to go that three Desserts were presented to finish the night, "The Amazing Banana" a visual replica of the real deal but made entirely of Fruit Mousse and White Chocolate on a bed of Peanut Butter and Chocolate Crumble while the Roast Apple Ice Cream presented its Fruit in no less than five textures alongside subtle toasty notes, the Caramelized French Toast more straight-forward with eggy Custard at the center and a restrained sweetness that was absolutely delightful.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a wonderful experience.
We were a large group of 16 people- on a very busy day when their main area could not accommodate more than 8, the staff opened up an additional area to make room for our total party. Carlos, our waitor, made sure we had a great time and provided numerous wonderful recommendations and made several accommodations to food restrictions in our group (vegetarians and nut allergies). The food itself (Chef Jose) was delicious, eclectic, and well presented. The majority of dishes were a hit amongst the group. The wine and drink recommendations also were great. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.
Be the first to ReplyI had high expectation of this place.
Talking to the bar tender onlh made me more excited as he said that they run a full house, year round. 140 people served each night. So, they are popular. How ever... I would not recommend people to go out of their way to eat here. Maybe it was just the night or maybe it was a lack of inspiration or the fact that I was expecting something of culinary gravity. I didn't want to choose of the menu and since they don't have the menu anymore that they promote online, I told the bartender to just get me somethings for a total of €35.The amuse-bouche that I received made everything very promising. A avocado puree cornet with salmon and a pinch of wasabi. Fresh and a delish way to start. When the second dish came, I was a bit surprised that it was avocado again. This time with a sort of tuna. AGain very refreshing especially topped off with my favorite sauce, YumYum. Then came the pork filet, which was a little bit spicy due to the mustard sauce it was drenged in. I barely tasted the pork. The next dish, was tempura vegatable, which were pretty good although a little greasy. They also came with YumYum sauce which I thought went well with it. The main courses I got, were presented amazingly and for if you don't go out to dinner alot, I can tell that you would like that and think it's culinary fantastic. I was impressed but after I tasted the taco, which was drenged in... YumYum sauce and the steamed bun, which was dressed in... You guessed it... YumYum sauce. I had a bit much. This mayonnaise based sauce is not something to use when you are trying culinary cuisine. Hibachi place use it to break down the rice and make it flavourfull. Also... it's not hard to make this sauce. Why use it in every dish? I though as a test kitchen for a michelin star chef that I would be able to get some small experimental plates. Nonetheless, I was pretty full but after receiving the bill, I snapped back to reality. For the amount of food I have received it was still ok for most standards but I have eaten in Valencia for way less and WAAAAY better. That's mainly the reason why I give three stars. If I would've stayed below €45 for myself, I would have stay at four but it was a little too expensive for a not culinary experience.

First of all they took our reservation for 8pm without telling us that the restaurant does not start serving second dinner until 8:30pm. Secondly, they told us each dish was big but they all came very small and I am not a big person who eats large portions. Lastly and the worst that there was hair in my food! Disappointment!
