Completely bummed that this gem of a cheese and dessert
Completely bummed that this gem of a cheese and dessert treasure is suddenly closed indefinitely. As far as I can remember, for at least a decade, this has been top drawer with amazing service, delicious food (though I always had to pretend I didn't see the pig-ass sandwich on the menu because I just can't ....) and an amazing selection of the finest cheese. What a loss to the 'hood and NYC in general. Places like this are hard to find and becoming another pandemic loss.

Always a solid wine and cheese bar, the service is friendly and impeccable in my experience. Everything is delicious and the cheese pairings are incredibly thoughtful. Really talented experts on both cheese and wine. Excellent date spot.

Great, cute place for wine and cheese (and more)! Loved that the cheese expert could give recommendations based on our wines. The cheese was amazing! Nice, relaxing, romantic vibe.

Be the first to ReplyCasellula landed on my radar when one of my friends went
Casellula landed on my radar when one of my friends went here to celebrate her birthday with her SO. She had nothing but good things to say about it, and knowing how much I love cheese, recommended I check it out. Cheese? Wine? You didn't need to tell me twice. I had been meaning to catch up with some of my colleagues off the clock, and thought this was the perfect spot. That being said, I booked a table and started getting pumped up for some cheese. Casellula is located in Hell's Kitchen, right off 9th Ave on 52nd. Like many Manhattan restaurants, it's not large - but due to the high ceilings and squareish shape, it doesn't feel cramped. There are a few tables as well as a bar upon entry to sit - I would definitely recommend making reservations, as we arrived upon opening at 5 and before I knew it the place was full. Decor was minimal but in a good way - clean lines, light woods, and large windows that make the space feel open. The menu is broken up by small, medium, and large plates. It's mostly New American fare with an emphasis on cheese. They also have a separate cheese only menu which changes based on what they have. Because of the variety of plate sizes available, you can come here for tapas or full dinner. The heart of Casellula is that it's a wine bar, and they have a large variety to choose from, I was really impressed. We decided to start with a cheese board, this came with six different kinds of cheese paired with spreads and such that augmented the flavors (the types of cheeses vary based on what they have for the day). We also noticed that it was Mozzarella Monday, so we decided to order some. This was also really good - the mozz was hand-pulled at the table, and was accented with salt, oil, and balsamic which only added to the experience. The garlic bread it came with was the cherry on top - warm and garlicy mmmm yes. We then moved onto spicy kale salad, stuffed peppadew peppers, mac and cheese, and the Pig's Ass Sandwich. Everything was delicious, with the sandwich being the standout for me - it was hearty and paired with a tasty sauce. For dessert we had the chocolate truffles, which was the perfect finisher. Service was great - the entire staff was very friendly and always made sure we were taken care of. With their emphasis on wine and cheese, I would like to have seen a wine flight on the menu, or more emphasis on pairing their wines with the cheeses. However, those gripes aside, I had a great first experience. Overall, Casellula's variety of wine and cheese really make it stand out among its peers - this is an ideal spot for a casual evening with friends to have some relaxing conversation and good food. I would definitely return to explore more of their selections.
Be the first to ReplyI've never had a bad night here.
Always attentive. Always delicious. The only hesitation I have is posting this because it's already always packed!! Love love love it.

I've been coming to eat here every year on my birthday for the past 5 years. The service is always spectacular and I get excited for the cheese pairing every time. You never know what you're going to get.I almost always split the pigs ass sandwich with someone as well, it's a great addition to the meal and the dipping sauce is so yummy.5/5

I have really missed this place since going plant-based after the pandemic. This is heaven for a cheese lover. They put together such interesting cheeses with other flavors and wines. My mind and tastebuds were blown away. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic. I highly recommend this place for a date especially if you can attend one of their cheese pairing classes!
Be the first to ReplyMy all-time neighborhood hangout.
The wine selection, the amazingly nice staff and the cheese selection is unparalleled. If you're looking for a great place to have good conversation with a few friends or spouse and relax, this place is perfect for you. This is not for large groups.
Be the first to ReplyCaselullaI think the food here is great.
The charcuterie board and selection of cheeses is superb. The Mac and cheese is delicious. For wine - I ordered a sauvignon blanc and. An Australian sparkling shiraz - Shook. I'd say their by the glass was above average, but not Stella. The service was also very good. The server was very funny and attentive. Atmosphere was also nice and relax. I'd definitely recommend this place for a casual conversation or a date.4 stars - recommended

Caselulla is perfect for catching up with friends over good wine and snacks. A friend and I split a bottle of wine, the cheese board (fromager choice) and the Pig's Ass sandwich. The outdoor setup is warm enough for chillier nights- they have blankets and heaters!

You know the 1,000 times you've gone out and it fell just a little short somehow? Maybe the server was inattentive. Or the food was meh. Or the wine was just kind of average. Caselulla is the place where it all comes together. This place is why living in New York is worth all the stress. The space is the right kind of small and all kinds of perfect. The staff is exceptional. The food and wine are beyond your highest expectations. We stopped by on a Tuesday night before a show. The Sommelier was friendly and non-snobby. She actually wanted to help us find something we'd love - and she did. The fromagère (that's what we learned the in-house cheese expert is called) created a masterpiece. Cheeseboards can be boring or overdone. This one was different. She came out to explain each piece she chose, and why. And then, she paired each one with a complimentary flavor that was just incredible. My wife and I couldn't believe a cheeseboard could be this good. Honestly, the experience could not have been better. It was so great, in fact, that we stopped by for dessert after the show just to see if we had imagined the whole thing. We hadn't. Everything was just as great the second time. Casellula is simply one of the best spots in the whole city. I'd put it up against any wine bar in any city in the world. You will not be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplySmall spot but cute and intimate.
Pretty typical meatpacking area bar vibes (it gets pretty loud in here at night). Okay for a date but it is loud so take that into account.
Be the first to ReplyIn Short: This is THE wine spot in HK.
You can't do better and it'll surpass even your wildest expectations! Don't think twice - just come hungry, thirsty, and ready for an unforgettable experience! It's both intimate and incredible! This is easily the best wine bar in HK! Because hey, let's be honest - we've all been craving a spot in Hell's Kitchen with delicious food, a reliable wine list, and killer service. Neither a "Mediterranean" bar with wine, nor a restaurant with an extensive but vapid list of vino.... NO! We want the real deal! An intimate wine bar that delights us, helps us forget about the stress of the city, activates each of our senses and reminds us that life should be decadently delicious! Though there are a few places that scratch the surface, as a long-term resident I can assure you that nowhere in the neighborhood begins to provide the experience that Casellula gives their diners. Careful thought and planning have clearly been invested into every element of the experience that they provide.Dining here is a dream come true. Here, every aspect of a great night out just fits together. Earlier tonight, my friend and I had the pleasure of bar-side conversation and culinary curation from Tiffany, Jennifer, Kristen, and Vinnie. Together, they strung together a night for the ages!Unlike many wine bars, the menu here details provenance, flavor profiles, and other pertinent information. As a wine lover, you will easily feel at home here. The truth however is that you don't need any prior knowledge because your bartender will happily take it upon herself to match you with the perfect fit. Seeking a wintery red? They've got you! Looking for a crisp white? No Problem! How about something sparkly? Sure, why not!One pour and we were sold... but that's just where the fun began! Now, the food menu took front and center, and boy did it deliver! The citrus salad was both simple and refreshing. The endive salad will blow you away with its complex flavors and drizzle of brightness (enough to add cheer to even this grey, post-apocalyptic winter day)! Looking for something hearty? Well, their glorious and yet unpretentious Mac & Cheese will more than hit the spot!At this point, we were several drinks in and bursting at the seams. However, as it'd had been a nightmare of a day, we opted for the grand finale - three cheeses to pair with our final glass of wine. Now for context, my friend and I were drinking the whitest of whites and a full body red - AKA a cheese mongerer's worst nightmare. One sampling platter to share and pick up the notes of both glasses? Oh dear!Fret not friends - the crack team at Casellula had it under control! Upon receiving the most beautiful of platters, we were then wowed by the sheer knowledge that was shared with us. Origin, texture, pairings, and a secret "extra" with each cheese made this the best cheese tasting of my life! (And trust me - I've both conducted plenty of tastings for work, fun, and have attended several as well. This was truly next level and capable of being an experience within itself)! You can tell when a tasting is done with both love and logic. This one set the bar by which all others shall be measured! And so there you have it folks... A finely curated selection of wine, exceptional food pairings, unbelievably fun service, and an ambiance that will make even the toughest date melt!Casellula earned themselves two new regulars tonight and we will be happy to spread the word. Without questions one of the best dining experiences that I have had anywhere. We are truly blessed to have this here in the heart of Hell's Kitchen! Can't wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyMet a friend here and it was a great experience.
The ambiance was inviting and the cheese/wine selection was extensive. The staff were very knowledgeable about everything on their menu and had excellent recommendations for those who might not be wine connoisseurs. A lovely, cozy little spot in the city.

Casellula is hands down one of (if not) the best wine and cheese bars in the city! We've been coming for years, and they never disappoint. The very long cheese list can seem daunting, but if you put your faith in their cheesemongers, they won't lead you astray. Each cheese comes with a single and very thoughtful pairing that really brings out the cheese's flavor (e.g., fudge or chocolate with a blue), and it's so fun to see how their pairings change with each cheese and over time. The list of wines by the glass isn't super long, but they tend to have a nice selection, and some reasonably priced bottles as well. The service is solid (if not superb), though I must say they can be stingy with the bread. They were much better about it this visit, but we've had to ask for bread several times per visit in the past, as they would only bring out a few, thin slices each time.A recent change is that they now accept reservations. There's a small indoor seating area, which can get loud but is very cute. And there's now also a sizeable outdoor seating area (with heaters above the tables). Overall, I highly recommend!!!

If you love wine and cheese, you must come here! They have an incredible selection of cheeses that changes daily (I think), and while they don't have a full kitchen, their hot dishes are great too (mac and cheese ane Chistorras a highlight!)The service is always amazing and they do a wonderful job with the cheese selections & wine pairings. Great for a date night or to catch up with friends.

If you love cheese, meat and everything in between, then this place is a MUST! They have varieties of cheese to choose from and was thankful the staff knew exactly which type of cheese we should get, based on our flavor profile. Overall, the atmosphere was great and had a very relaxing vibe (great for date night)! They also have a huge selection of wine to choose from, where the staff was able to accommodate and provide recommendations based on the cheese variation we were getting. The charcuterie board was also absolutely delicious, which came with chef's selection of 3 meats, cornichon, dijon and seasonal chutney. All tasted amazing and I honestly could've gone for another round without sharing (lol).Definitely check this place out, if you're looking for quick apps and drinks before any broadway show!

Drinks and cheese on a Saturday night (3 people)ProsThe staff worked hard to get us a table, even tho we didn't have a reservation. I appreciate he (the host) was upfront staying he needed the table at a certain time. The wine list is extensive. The cheese menu is also extensive and easy to read and not overwhelming. Our beverage server and cheese server were pleasant, friendly and sharp! Cons (none of these are a "con" for me however) It's tiny (but I prefer the cozy space)

Hit pass on this location unless you like being profiled and enjoy dealing with elitism:- you're greeted by a lad that doesn't know what he's looking for from a vaccination front and his general demeanor and interaction gives a strong sense that he doesn't want you there. A gem in the making for sure.- was then met by another gentleman that approached the seating area, asked what was to drink, after half the company spoke he left. I didn't know half service was thing, but here, it appears to be alive and well. - single saving grace, the second server, a young lady was very accommodating and helpful. - this experience was not unique to my party, especially as it pertained to the warm welcoming...or lack there of.If I could give negative stars I would.
Be the first to ReplyThey really spruced this place up from my last visit.
Before it was industrial minimalist. Now it's a bit more streamlined and more typical decor for a wine bar. Food is good - cheese and small plates. Plan on $50 pp for wine and small plates.
