Eat like at home!!!
After days of American cuisine with burgers and chips, we needed to eat our Italian cuisine. We went to Cesarina and we not only ate well but we felt like we were in Italy!! The food and raw materials of excellent quality (the carpaccio was delicious), the delicate and strong flavors (we took the pappardelle with wild boar ragù and the paccheri with scampi cream), the super friendly and welcoming staff in a place with attention to every detail . Thanks for making us feel at home!!! True Italian cuisine in San Diego!!!

When you put knowledge, soul and heart into the kitchen these are the results. Very helpful and kind staff. Top quality products not to mention the focaccia and homemade pasta. The only true Italian cuisine restaurant in California.
Be the first to ReplyGreat homemade pasta and tiramisu served by kind, knowledgable staff
We went for dinner to Cesarina. We ate outdoors in back and it was a really nice space with outdoor heaters and blankets on the back of every chair. We were brought foccacia with dipping sauce right away and they were quick to refill as desired. The homemade pasta and tiramisu were served by attentive, friendly, terrific staff. Everyone who worked he went above and beyond to ensure our experience was great. The staff was really knowledgable and able to help us make decisions on what would be best for our group which included some vegetarian diners.

My family met at Cesarina for dinner and to celebrate two birthdays. My husband and I selected the salad Super Romana and an entree of Lasagna Alla Bolognese which was an evening special and not on the menu. It took a bit of time for the food to finally arrive which is understandable. But, we had requested that our salad and entree be brought at the same time...the lasagna arrived and more than five minutes past before our salad arrived. The salad was not what we expected. Yes, it is made with romaine lettuce, however, the large uncut lettuce leaves are simply stacked on the plate with sliced red onions and a dash of some type of dressing. The lasagna was definitely a bit over baked , so much so that the top was very crispy. One of our party requested Tiramisu for dessert because it will be prepared at table side and she was intrigued. The waiter brought the large long bisquits, poured cream sprinkled cinnamon, stuck two candles in and that was it. Not what we expected. The highlight was the Ricotta Cheesecake topped with berry sauce. Delicious and well plated. The prices overall I thought a bit high. Parking is very difficult to find as the restaurant has very limited parking slots. But, this is my experience. The place was packed. Reservations booked well in advance. So maybe this was a one time not so great experience. A lot of people seem to really like this place. For them, I say Enjoy!

Review: Cesarina, San Diego — Overall, this restaurant lives up to their reviews, although I can't say it's Michelin Star Level. - Michael Glinter has traveled to 68 countries and 36 states to get the flavor of some amazing foods. His view on reviews is simple – Taste, Presentation, and Service. He believes telling the reader a positive and negative unbiased look at the restaurant is essential. -- The atmosphere at Cesarina is energetic, with an eclectic view of Italian decor differentiating themselves from other restaurants. The restaurant was bustling with energy, but it never felt overcrowded or noisy. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations and answering our questions about the menu. — Speaking of the menu. It was very diverse, with a diverse group of great options. What I wasn't impressed with was their lack of flexibility on the menu. I wanted the Spigola Al Limone, but instead of the potatoes, I wanted a small portion of fresh pasta. They said it wasn't possible. He told me I would have to buy a $25 pasta entree with the meal. I find that ridiculous. — We started with the Fiora di Zucca Scomposto. The dish was great. I love the way they utilized the squash blossoms and lightly breaded them. However, the dish was lukewarm at best. We sent it back to make one from scratch, and the manager said he would pay for it. When we got it back, it was still Luke warm. My biggest issue was with the sauce; it was almost cold. — They also serve homemade focaccia that they make in the morning. While it is traditional Italian to order room-temperature bread, what boggled my mind was the cold tomato sauce served on the side. Mind you, In Italy, we don't serve sauce. But, the sauce being cold is problematic. — Entrees - this is what got us back on track. The Fettuccini con Le Polpettine and Parpadele Arrabbiatisimma were amazing. The pasta was homemade, and the mix of flavors, especially the homemade sauce with the mushrooms, pork and peperoncino, was a perfect blend of sweet and savory. — Overall, my experience at Cesarina was great. The combination of delicious food, impeccable service, and cozy ambiance made for a memorable and enjoyable evening. If they work on some of the small things, it would genuinely be 5-star worthy.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing food, but friendly service & nice ambience
My server was very friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was super charming, but I was very disappointed with the food. The complimentary focaccia was cold, as in refrigerated-cold, and it had a strange marinara sauce drizzled over it that made it taste simply like cold pizza crust with sauce. As soon as I saw the menu, which I neglected to check out online, I got worried: it was a "choose your own pasta to pair with a sauce" kind of place--this worried me because in true Italian cuisine, there is an art and a science to pairing shapes of pasta with sauce. I immediately understood that this was just a different thing--catering to customers who want a lot of choices. (That's not my style--I'd like a professional to figure out what will taste best with what, but if you like a lot of choices and don't necessarily care if they're going to taste great, AND want to pay too much for it all, this place is for you.) I ordered one of the predetermined pasta-with short-rib meat sauce dishes, and it was really disappointing. The sauce was gloopy and bland and it tasted more like chipped beef in a gravy. I actually felt a little nauseous as I ate it, because it looked like my cat's wet food from a can. It was also hugely overpriced--about $30 for the entree. There are many other wonderful Italian restaurants in San Diego, and I'll keep going to them.

We ordered lasagna to go, shared large serving. This was overpriced the quality and taste left me stunned with the ratings for this place. The bread was awful it’s these 1x1 pieces of pre bought sandwich bread. I think there is no competition in SD for quality Italian food. They have nice looking to go bags.
Be the first to ReplyJust what you want in an authentic Italian restaurant
I was hoping that we would have an excellent and authentic Italian meal for our first date night in some time. And this was PERFECT. We started with a salad that was perfectly dressed, fresh, and flavorful without being overwhelming. Then, you know when the waiter is from Rome and responds to my question by immediately recommending the Carbonara because it is what he (and the Chef) remember from home, you expect something terrific start. This did not disappoint. But sometimes the mark of a great place is the ability to take a "simple" dish and make you want to come back for me. My wife had a pasta with marinara (and added meatballs). I wish they sold the sauce, because I would have bought a case. Her plate was incredible. So, yes, I highly recommend eating here. This was so good that we plan to return to try more on the menu!

We visit San Diego 2-3 times a year, and we try to visit Cesarina each time for the superb food and wonderful staff. Cesarina not only equals but surpasses virtually every Italian restaurant that we've been to in Boston, New York and Philadelphia. The food (particularly the pasta) is authentic, and the staff (from the manager to the waitstaff) are knowledgeable and fun to interact with, especially if you speak some Italian. We can hardly wait until our next trip out there. -- Bill & Maria from Boston

Friends took us here for our holiday gift exchange. The minute we walked in we were taken by the unique decor. The servers are very attentive. They have water pitchers shaped like roosters on the table which is very cute. The food is good as is the bread and appetizers served before dinner. The wait staff is very attentive. It’s especially festive during the holidays.
Be the first to ReplyGood for instagram, bad for good Italian food.
My wife picked this place because the place shines on social media. The menu was unimaginative and resembled many fast food Italian food restaurants of the early 2000s. Pick you pasta, pick your sauce. All of our pasta was over cooked and sauces were average at best. You can find many better, more authentic, Italian restaurants in the San Diego area for this price.

I've been here a dozen times. Very authentic delicious food. Ive tried so many different items but my favorites are their lasagna and the squash blossoms w tomato sauce. The sauce has a little kick. Just delicious! They use quality ingredients here. Everything comes out piping hot. You have the option to create your own pasta dish by select the noodles, sauce, and toppings. Really love this option for picky eaters. They have indoor and outdoor seating and you can make reservations ahead of time.

This was an amazing Italian meal. You could tell everything was fresh and authentic. I had the carbonara and the pomodoro fresco - both were amazing. Owner is very nice, he went up to the tables to make sure everyone was happy. Definitely recommend this place and would go back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat traditional Italian food
I had a great experience here. The waiter was very welcoming and happy to help pick out wine and dishes. The fried zucchini with cheese was delicious, nice and creamy with a tangy tomato sauce. The lasagna was served piping hot and it was delicious with the many layers working together perfectly. Lastly the bucatini amatricina with guanciale was perfectly simple letting all of the flavors come through together. I will definitely be coming back to try more dishes.

Small casual restaurant with excellent food. My wife had the lasagna and said it was the best she has ever tasted. Can’t go wrong here for authentic Italian.

Best pasta I had in my entire life! No kidding. The service is amazing and oh my god the Tiramisu … I mean, seriously ?!!! Can’t wait to go back!!

The food is just amazing; perfectly prepared; delicious. Very nice wine selection. Lovely patio seating. Service however was slow. I selected the restaurant in part due to its family friendly reputation but our toddler had to wait much too long for his food. So I can’t recommend it for children, but will definitely return with adults.
Be the first to ReplyWow - super fun, super cute, excellent vegan options
What a lovely restaurant. We celebrated a birthday and were pampered with all the right service. Excellent cocktails and fantastic Italian vegan options on the menu. We were lucky to get a table for two without a reservation, but I strongly recommend making a reservation - even for a 5:00 dinner.

QUICKIE REVIEW
Cool Italian restaurant to try.
FOOD
This is what I tried:
Maracaibo Spritz
Margherita Calabrese
Fiori di Zucca
Spaghetti allo Scoglio
Rigatoni al sugo di maiale
Tiramisu
Normally I do not comment to much on the drinks, but I will say the spritz is a nice upgrade from a mimosa if you are looking to change it up a bit. The calabrese is spicy and for sure has some kick to it. Of the food items, the rigatoni stood out the most (waiter also said it was his favorite). The pork was soft and went good with the pasta. Spaghetti was also good with seafood. I was looking for both to have a bit stronger flavor but were nice. Probably the coolest part of lunch was having tiramisu and seeing them assemble it in front of you. Lady fingers had a nice texture and was not soggy from sitting in the fridge.
PARKING
Not really. Go with street parking and you will be fine.
SERVICE
Waiter very friendly and conversational. I have to say staff was quick and very attentive to everyone.
PRICE
You can expect to pay about $20+ a dish
TIP/OTHER THOUGHTS
I sat outside and I have to say it was quite nice. They are nailing the ambiance setting plus the little blankets to throw over your shoulder or legs should you need it.
Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time. I went for lunch and there was mistaking they get busy fast.
Delizioso
Hands down, the best Italian food we have ever had outside of Italy! The menu is very creative with that casual California flair. My husband had cannlloni con polpo, while I had a delicious cappelletti with shrimp, both of which were excellent! For dolce, we had an incredible panettone with pistacchio cream. The service was great, as was the wine. I wish we lived here. Potremmo mangiare questo cibo squisito ogni giorno (We could eat this delicious food every day!)

Our party of 10 reserved brunch space on the patio a few weeks in advance - something I appreciated as most places weren't accepting reservations for parties of our size. The ambiance outside is lively and pretty - the inside had a quieter vibe, but looked very cute. The food was DELISH - especially the caprese, fried squash blossoms and bolognese. Only complaints was that someone's order was incorrect and the server seemed stretched a bit thin, so I was having to flag him down a bit more than I would've liked. Overall I def recommend!
Be the first to ReplyQuaint but pricey
It's small but charming. The servers are friendly but NOT timely. The offering of parmesan should be when your food is served, not ten minutes later after most of your food has been eaten. The portions are NOT generous but pricey. The food is flavorful. This was our first time at Cesarina and we were celebrating TWO birthdays. The staff did NOTHING to make the meal special, not even a happy birthday wish. This was an disappointing, expensive, NOT festive birthday dinner.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Service and Over Cooked Food
We were promptly seated, but that was about it for the servive. We had to wait to place ou order and we had to wait forever to get our bill. And they weren't busy, the waiters were standing around talking amongst themselves. Everyone got a different meal. Mine was pasta with octopus. The octopus was tough and over cook and the pasta was also overcooked. My wife had the gnocchi which didn't look anything like a gnocchi. They looked like a biscuit and the taste was just okay. This place is way, way overrated.

Growing up in NYC and now living in NJ, one becomes a bit spoiled about great Italian food. Cesarina was a very pleasant surprise - homemade pasta and well-prepared dishes, right in San Diego. Like all good restaurants, it's a busy place though so make reservations in advance!
Be the first to ReplyGood service, good food
Good food, excellent service, a bit pricey. Not a lot of seating, so call ahead for a reservation. Same some room for their great desserts.
