THIS RESTAURANT HAS GONE DOWNHILL.
First of all, there were too many items from the selection of entrees that contained duck fat, leaving very few other choices. The pork tenderloin was ok, but the accompaniment of shredded Brussels sprouts was along side too much gooey sauce. The strawberry tart in my opinion was not really a tart, but rather a pre-baked shell with a liquidy, too warm and overly sweetened cream ( that tasted to me more like marshmallow cream ) with a few sliced strawberries on top . It is no where near what French chef Jacque Pepin would ever come up with. The tasting truffle soup lacked flavor and had something that tasted like some unidentified ( fatty ?) substance. It was nauseating. The much overpriced glass of white wine was less than average. A small warm dinner roll with butter was ok. I don't think the waitress was aware that her very fluffy outdoor jacket was protruding onto our table when she chatted with the couple seated at the adjacent table. We finally left with a much overpriced bill for the quality and feeling taken advantage of, although I left a tip of close to 20%. As a retired Registered Dietitian of over 48 years, I believe I am a credible reviewer. I do not plan to return to this restaurant anytime soon.
Be the first to ReplyJust wow.
It felt like being back in Paris. Starting with the owner who runs the place and shares his recipe with his son. Very welcoming. The food was faultless. We had the special Cรดte de Boeuf (bone-in ribeye) and the meat was cooked to perfection, with the bone marrow side. The onion soup was cheese, to die for. Then we had the potato side creamy and cheesy. I tried some of the salads too and they were brilliant (duck confit and beets and goat cheese). The dessert we tried them all - favourite being the French toast - but crรจme brรปlรฉe was also special. The champagne and reds suggested were al Incredible and service was epic. Happy to have a place like this in SF.

the escargot and the ice cream was salty and the steak was okay but very soft. However the service was amazing, the pork chop was the best. they also' had this truffle soup(?) kinda thing that was paired with the bread AND THAT WAS A GAME CHANGER.

This restaurant has extraordinary food and services! Excellent customer service, delicious food that's beautifully presented. They have several good wines and I had one cocktail on our date. It was really good. Definitely will come back again!

Highlights: $50 for a 3oz(??) world, tiniest, filet mignon served with overcooked brown frozen spinach It's been a while since we came back here. I think our meal started out very good with a small French baggage and a tiny leak soup as a complementary service. The trio of salmon was flavored well and I enjoyed it. Although im not sure if it was worth $20. (The Yelp price needs an update since the price went up) I wish I ended my meal here. But it went downhill very quickly from this point on. My main course was filet mignon. they now charge $50 for this embarrassingly tiny portion. It was probably about 3 ounce. I was literally shocked. It was also served with overcooked frozen spinach as a side. The meal was cooked to perfection but it lacked flavor. My hub and I agreed that we are not coming back here considering the service wasn't even on par with the price they are charging. Disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a sad downgrade.
I really, really, really was a fan of this place before, but can no longer recommend them as being 4 or 5 stars because I've been here multiple times before I write this review and each time was disappointing. Let's talk about the escargot. The buttery garlic was now sour with less pesto, and the bread was cold and lifeless. I used to enjoy dipping the bread, but not anymore. 2/5 stars Their French onion soup was also one of my favorite soups of all time.....now the broth is so salty, and the cheese barely melted on the top. This wasn't made with the same care as before. 2/5 stars for their salty onion soup which used to be my favorite. The salmon appetizer was just not as fresh as we would have liked, and neither was the soggy salad. The salmon was a bit fishy, which is never good, and the lettuce for the salad was on the old/stale side. 2/5 stars. My coworker's risotto was so dry, and also, the temperature was off. You know it's bad when she asked me why I thought this place was so great. 3/5 stars. Point taken, it's not the way it used to be....and that's something that's hard to write here. This was a 2.5 star meal experience rounded up only because of the okay service.

We've been loyal happy patrons for over ten years. Excellent food, great atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a charming date-night restaurant on Clement
Definitely a charming date-night restaurant on Clement Street. We had a reservation around 5:30, and it didn't get busy until later in the night. I can see the attempt at fine dining vibes, but it was overshadowed by excessive loudness. The staff were very attentive, constantly refilling our hot water. I opted for the three-course option, rather than ร la carte. I started with moules frites, which came with mussels in a broth alongside fries. The mussels were cooked perfectly, though the broth lacked salt, and the fries were overly seasoned, resembling McDonald's fries. This dish would have been perfect with a balance in salt and flavor; I wasn't sure if the broth was bland or the fries were too salty, vice versa. For my second course, I picked the filet mignon. While perfectly cooked medium rare, the dish's different components overpowered the meat. There was a veal jus that added depth, yet the overall seasoning fell short. The crispy duck fat potato tasted like a hash brown with a risotto-like texture; it could've been better complemented by a simple mashed potato or potato gratin. It came with a few sautรฉed mushrooms, which were acceptable, but the spinach tasted like an attempted cream of spinach and missed the mark. In the dessert course, the chocolate fondant was a chocolate lava cake with a warm molten center. However, the rum-raisin ice cream they served it with had an alcohol flavor that was too strong, masking the taste of the chocolate. If you like rum, then that dish is perfect for you. While this restaurant has plenty of positive reviews, unfortunately I was underwhelmed by every dish and didn't get that wow factor.
Be the first to ReplySolid French staple in the Richmond.
If you feeling French, feel your way over to The Hat and eat yourself some snails and frog legs. Finish it up with the crรจme brรปlรฉe. Service is top notch.

If you are visiting the area grab a reservation beforehand because this place can fill up and is worth i!
Be the first to ReplyI grew up in SF in the inner sunset.
I workers in at least 7 restaurants and bars. This place is my favorite along with the brazen head. The food is flawless, the staff is over the top exceptional, and the experience is always delightful (a word that is chosen carefully). I have enjoyed fleur-de-lis, Stars, and Boulevard. And neighborhood places like tricolor and L'Avenue. I even experienced the joy of Ernie's and the Blue Fox. Chapeau excels among these giants. This is not a fake review. My name is Pat Walsh and you're welcome to track me down to ensure that I'm giving you real info.

Chapeau is a great French restaurant that serves up some truly delicious food. From start to finish, my dining experience was top-notch. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the ambiance was perfect for a nice dinner out.The food, though, was the real highlight. I started with the escargots, which were cooked to perfection and served in a delicious garlic butter sauce. For my main course, I had the steak frites, which was cooked exactly as I had requested and was incredibly flavorful. The fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned, too. And finally, for dessert, I had the chocolate mousse, which was rich and creamy and the perfect end to my meal.In terms of drinks, the wine list was extensive and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful in selecting a bottle that complemented my meal. I also tried one of their signature cocktails, which was expertly crafted and delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend Chapeau for anyone looking for a great French meal in a welcoming environment with top-notch service.

Excellent wine list. I amSo glad that this local restaurant survived the pandemic. The escargot and duck confit are always spot on.

Make a reservation before you come! We booked a table for a late Valentine's Day. They have a set menu price, 75 for a three course meal. Each of the dishes were unique and delicious in their own way. The escargot was delicious and hot, served in butter. The trio of salmon was interesting, kind of like sashimi wrapped in sashimi, but the sauce and the chips on top gave some additional flavor and texture. For our mains, we got the filet mignon and the pork tenderloin. Both were so tender and soft and deliciously cooked. For dessert, we got the french toast and the creek brรปlรฉe which were both not overly sweet. The restaurant was quite packed, but with the din lighting it was not too bad. My table was seated in the corner so it was a bit weird that I had to share eye contact with the table next to us every time I looked up since I was sitting next to my partner as opposed to opposite of him. Great place for a special occasion!

Came here for a Valentine's day dinner (the day after Valentine's day). We had read that it was vegetarian friendly, but as two vegetarians, that was not true for us. There was only 1 vegetarian option on the menu, and they would not accomodate us (we asked to just have a plate of some of the sides from the meat dishes, seems easy enough...). The service was SLOW. The drinks tasted like those you get at the bar in the pool in Mexico (great there, less so at a French tasting menu). The food was good, but the restaurant is basically devoid of any ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered a bottle of champagne to be served to my friends.
I ordered the day of service and paid. The champagne was never served but I was charged. I have requested twice for a refund. It has been two weeks. Still no refund. So very disappointed.

I've been a Chapeau fan for over a decade, since it was located on Clement and 15th Ave. It's long been our go-to special occasion place in the neighborhood. Expensive, but worth it. This time, the prices had gone up, the food quality had gone down, the waiter was irritable, and we were seated next to a family with 3 spoiled kids who kicked ceaselessly at the banquette. We might have gotten over that, but the father spoke as if he was trying to be heard over a sporting event. Shouting in our ear. The management did nothing -- a 5-person bill and tip is worth more than a 2-person bill. And about the bill. $230, with tip, for 2 people: we both had appetizers and entrees, and we each had a glass of wine. That's it. The waiter said we could order a la carte, but he charged us $40 for each entree, when we later saw on a menu on the web that one of the entrees was $36 and the other $38. My cassoulet was good (not great), but my partner's black cod and quinoa was tiny and tasteless. A few days after our dinner, I came down with a nasty respiratory infection. Maybe a coincidence, but Chapeau packs in the diners like the coach section on a cut-rate airline. Unfortunately, our former favorite spot is now a place we will never again enter.
Be the first to ReplyFrench sauces are done at the highest quality.
I was surprised how well balanced the food was. Great earthy notes minus the acidic under tones. The desserts were well done - the tart was especially well prepared and the freshness rang through. The stand French dessert was very well excited and not overly flavored, very subtle crรจme! Yummy!

Very good French food! You can have escargots and some of the typical French plates. I went three times for a diner and every times we enjoyed it.
Be the first to ReplyWe came here for the anniversary.
I think it was one of the best decision we've ever made! This place was awesome. Foods were very delicious, portion sizes were good, staff were helpful. Especially chef/owner Philippe was very friendly! I strongly suggest to everyone to go there. Specifically you should try cassoulet. Thank you so much for this great experience.

This was my first time trying a French restaurant and I really fell in love with the cuisine so had to leave them a review. Food: 5/5Salade landaise 5/5 - I actually think I ordered something else but then this came instead -- I figured it was the world telling me to be healthier haha but I'm so happy I got to try this! The dressing was so good I could chug it and the ingredients were freshFilet mignon 4.5/5 - I love me a good filet and this was great! French toast 5/5 WOW this stole the show for me! Would come back just to eat this. I had a passionfruit cocktail which was 5/5Ambiance: 5/5Intimate and cozy. The manager checked in with us and was very friendly. Be the first to ReplyIt been years since I've dined at Chapeau.
In fact, it was before my Yelpin' days. I remember the delicious French cuisine here and prix fixed menu offerings. I was looking forward to finally be back here as my friend was having his birthday dinner celebration on a recent Friday evening. In a gray colored store front, Chapeau has no signs in front and is only identified by its name on the front window. For those in the party that drove, they had no problems finding parking on the block. Our table for eleven was along the back left. Our host invited us to order the prix fixe menu, which they now have only one option. The prix fixe has seven appetizers and five entrรฉe and dessert choices. Our waiter took our drink orders as we decided on our appetizer, entree and dessert choices. We were brought baskets of warm house rolls and butter to start. Rustic and tasty. For my appetizer, I had the Trio of Salmon. A beautifully presented dish with salmon tartare, roe and some greens that were in the middle of gravlax. Surrounding it were crรจme fraiche and egg crumbles. I raw salmon and this was delicious. Several of my friends had the Salade Landaise which had frisee, duck confit, smoked breast, and chicken liver mousse and were saying they would get it again hands-down.The Pork Tenderloin was my entrรฉe. The pork was cooked perfectly pink and wrapped with bacon and it was on a bed of parsnip puree with shredded brussels sprouts in an apple calvados sauce. So much flavors in this dish. Delicious.Profiteroles - three puffs filled with vanilla bean ice cream covered in chocolate and almond slices. It was good. Our waiter was friendly and answered our questions about the menu items. Busboy were efficient in clearing dishes and bring extra bread and refilling water carafes. Chapeau was as good as it was when I was here years ago. Check out Chapeau for a delicious French meal. A gem in the Inner Richmond.
