I love this place so I'm hoping my recent experience was a one off...Service has always been the cornerstone of charcoal. It is slipping. For example, walked in, initial hostess looks at us, says nothing. Not even hi. Just stares. After the other hostess returns, silent hostess walks us back and says...you guessed it- nothing! It was weird. I know COVID has terribly impacted the service industry but this poor young woman seemed anxious and clueless. Yes, you need to greet people and give them some direction when walking them back through a kitchen. It's weird if you don't. Strike 1.Our server I've never had before in all my years going here. Very nice, but as the other tables came in, it became apparent that she did not have the finesse. Just picture this- all the tables around you are demanding and needy. They need to be walked through every choice, including drinks. This means that our table (who knew what we wanted) was neglected and service fell, fast. We had someone checking in every few minutes to then we received our entree and our server stopped by...once. After that, nothing. No more drinks, additions, nada. We wanted another round plus discussed additional food and dessert but after watching our server check on every other needy table we elected to just cut our losses and leave. Now, that might be bad enough. No. We are presented with the check and told to "double check" in case it's wrong. What? So we do and it's the entirely wrong check. Like listed as a four top and we are a two top. UGH. We are presented with the correct check and very little in terms of apology. Uber disappointed. So many of the the support staff are are awesome and were great this evening as per usual but please shape up the hostesses and servers bc this makes me hesitant to return.

Incredible food, really friendly and attentive service, amazing experience in general. Definitely recommend the steak and eggs and the crab eggs Benedict.
Be the first to ReplyCame here with my daughter.
Food was good. A little pricey for what it was though. Seating is fairly comfortable. No complaints there. Staff is not very friendly or helpful. Server seemed upset we didn't order immediately. Maybe it was a rough day? We never got our drink order either. First impression was average.

We live in the San Fernando Valley, so for us to drive to Venice as often as we did to dine at Charcoal, only means that we really loved the place. Food and service were excellent. Everyone we introduced to Charcoal, loved it as well. Then last year we had a terrible experience with a server and when we told the manager, who knew us, he did absolutely nothing except keep apologizing to us and our friends....both in the restaurant and outside as we left. I wrote a review the next morning and really thought I would hear back, but nothing. And when I say the service and managers were always top notch, they were. We often commented on how well, the managers dealt with any issue and they were never major. Not like ordering one wine and being charged considerably more for the one they brought to the table and opened, without any notice to us. We were all involved in a conversation and paid no attention, that is on us. But the way in which it was handled was on Charcoal. Crazy as it is, we haven't gone but do miss it.

The service was polite but seemed to talk down to us when we asked if we could add protein to a salad. Very overpriced for the food we ordered. Blah salad, ok meat. Just really not impressed

I recommend Charcoal Venice especially if you have never been. The waitress we have for our recent company gathering was very good and their whole entire staff did an excellent job. I've only been once however I plan to go to it again in the near future. Highly recommended and very tasty sauces which go paired well with their meats.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food.
Great vibe . Perfect for a date night or just small group of friends. The wine is list magnificent. And the food 5 starts
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best restaurants I have been to.
We started with the cabbage appetizer and to be honest , I don't even like cabbage that much, but I absolutely loved this. Wonderfully seasoned and charred. We then had the skirt steak, lobster, Yukon potato and broccolini. Everything was delicious, but that potato was something else. So incredibly good. I also had the midnight margarita, which was also delicious. Overall, probably one of the top meals I have had. In fact, trying to figure out how to eat there again before I leave town just so I can have more cabbage and another potato. Service was also perfect. Would highly recommend.

DELICIOUS you gotta order the duck, but honestly don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu because I've never had a bad time here.
Be the first to ReplyDon't order their cookbook.
Placed an order prior to Father's Day as a gift. My card was charged when order was placed and two weeks later the book had not been delivered to the recipient. Called and spoke with Tammy, she apologized and said she would mail the cookbook the very same day to my nephew (and said I would get one as well as an apology). Two more weeks went by and neither my nephew or I got the cookbook. By then it was almost a month after Father's Day. Thanks but no thanks!!! The restaurant food is ok, but not worth the lies and rip off. Too many other better restaurants to throw my money on.
Be the first to ReplyOur server was excellent.
Attentive with sparkling personality. He explained the nature of the dishes and serving style well. Food was innovative with style and delicious. Don't miss trying the unique sauces. The hostess accommodated an extra person in our party, necessitating a larger table with grace and kindness on a busy Saturday night.
Be the first to ReplyWe don't understand the rave reviews.
It's fine here. But, mind you, at roughly $150/person, it should be fantastic. We ate in the back patio, which, at this late hour in the pandemic, has no excuse for looking like a third-rate afterthought. We seek out fine dining -- so high prices don't scare us. But we don't appreciate such a misalignment between prices and food/experience. There are much better spots that offer roughly equivalent menus and overall better experiences. We much prefer the neighborhood Italian restaurant that used to be in this space and we'll continue to go elsewhere for our steak.

Solid neighborhood restaurant (amazing happy hour for apps and cocktails), and a destination for those wanting to try their unique take on charcoal cooking. I would go there just for the duck and the more charcoal roasted potato. I'd give them 5 starts if it wasn't for their very bad background music that completely throws off their vibe. Their service needs work too, where on one occasion it appeared that the servers were bickering with one another on who would wait our table.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was very good.
But the service (in the back patio) was comical. As soon as we sat down were were told in a scolding voice by our waitress that we had to order everything all at once, for the entire meal. We tried to order a small dish with our drinks while waiting for our last person and we were told no we cannot do that--so they really meant it! The order of timing of the service was poor. For example, we ordered wine when our drinks ran out and we basically went through our whole meal before the wine came, which took about 20 minutes, all told, to make the long journey of 20 feet from the bar. At some point we thought we saw our bottle sitting waiting for us on a serving table. We asked a busboy about it (could not flag down our waitress for 15 minutes) and he said it was not ours. Eventually it turns out it was ours and they brought it to us at close to the end of the meal. (We waited to finish our meat for the wine, which then meant it was cold, but that was our choice.) The waitress poured the wine and literally grunted and walked away. (We had not had any bad interactions with her to solicit this.) One time the waitress came and refilled one of our wine glasses and walked away without filling the others' which gave the table a big laugh. (That was less important than the long wait for the bottle.) Not a great experience for a $130 bottle of wine. It was not entirely her fault since it seemed like there was only one server for the entire back area. Such an odd experience for a high end restaurant. We were having fun so we let it all slide, but we cannot imagine Josiah Citrin had this experience in mind when he set up the place. With the 2.5% kitchen tip on the bill plus the 20% they default to, that's 22.5% tip on what was pretty poor service. I am not looking for a refund or anything like that, just putting it out there since I suspect the mangers of the establishment would want to remedy this. If it were fixed it would be the kind of place I'd make a regular, but not like this.
Be the first to ReplyCharcoal Venice is a neighborhood restaurant.
What a delicious surprise! After a super long walk on a Girls Day Adventure on Wednesday, my friend suggested we meet up again & walk over when it opened for dinner! Yellowfin Tuna Tartare: Took me a while to look through the menu and decide. She had ordered & wanted me to take a bite of this very dish and I was immediately in love and had to order it for myself! The citrus vinaigrette truly set it off, loved it! It's incredible, mouthwatering delicious and with the cute almost thin-as-air-like sweet potato tasting chips to go alongside & use to dip, it was a full on taste buds adventure and I was happy to be on the ride! Haha!Dessert/Yuzu Curd/Shared: Had a couple of small bites, love fruit; yum!Drinks: Midnight Margarita/Tasted: Took a sip of her charcoal drink, which actually had charcoal on the glass & seemed a bit wild. Absolutely surprised, as it was full of flavor, light and absolutely delicious! Imagine that!Tainted Love/My Drink: Loved my refreshing watermelon drink & I would order it again!Gin Fizz/Tasted: Took a sip of her drink, not for me. Realized I'm not into drinks with egg whites.Secret Hideaway: While I had only ordered to go once, today, she took me to a part of the restaurant that I had no idea about. After going through a bit of a maze, it seemed it we had arrived in Narnia; a whole new world! Haha! We had a great table & the location was a beautiful breath of fresh air!Customer Service: Super friendly! Everyone we interacted with was so nice! To our surprise, every few sips of our water, a gentleman would magically appear and fill it back up to the top, but he would show up out of nowhere, so it felt pretty magical and pretty cool, as we were constantly hydrated!Overall: Great experience with surprising flavor combinations & I already want to return & order the yellowfin tuna tartare once again, it's mind-blowing! Absolutely grateful that it's only a very short walk away!!

Should have known when it took 10 minutes for a server to greet us after we were seated. Not gonna rage on yelp but there were issues. A picture is worth a thousand words. It looks like a child plated this food. It tasted like Costco prepared food. Truly underwhelming for an alleged Michelin star chefs menu. Oh, and, a table for two within earshot complained to their server the chef needed to work on their lemon ricotta pancakes
Be the first to ReplyCharcoal looked like a nice upscale relaxing place to have
Charcoal looked like a nice upscale relaxing place to have some steak and wine at a glance. When we walked in the vibe was immediately a bit off. The music playing in the restaurant was inconsistent and flat out awful at times. The sound system was also very bad too loud with no lo and an all ear piercing travel to make for a stressful situation. The service we had was not good. Our server seems to come by about every 15 minutes to check on us and it seemed as though that was the style. The truth for us was that we wanted to eat quickly and get out as fast as we could to get away from the bad music in the overpriced strange menu.We didn't enjoy our experience there though I could see how it might be more enjoyable for a date. We were a five top of business casual's trying to get in and out and relax for an hour. We went to the wrong place.

I come in alone and sit at the bar just to be told I have to be at a table to order from dinela... not a problem, I'll just order from the menu... just for them not to have any wagyu left.... *sigh* I order the skirt steak and it was delicious...Okay, hear me out... someone comes up to me explaining to me numbers... and I'm thoroughly confused, yet I arise to conclusion... and believe me, i verified! if I came back tomorrow, and sat at the bar, on 4/5, because of Semantics... I would be able to order from the dinela menu? Make it make sense....I will return bc of Brian, the bartender.... He was great.... I'd return for the food, it was great... but the business is a bit confusing...Word on the street(Brian) the chef is Michelin rated... no wonder the food so good!!

We came for Dine LA at 6:15pm and they ran out of the Dine LA menu by the time we ordered. Very understaffed and very poor management. We didn't get greeted until a good 30 min after we sat down, then the server said there were only 2 dine LA meals left so he said he would put them on hold for us. Then 10 min later the manager came and said they ran out, didn't offer us any other option. The manager barely apologized and lacked skills in hospitality. The food was great but the service was horrible. Not the server's fault but the restaurant seemed understaffed. Our food took forever.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time here and I loved it.
We sat at the bar and Eric made sure our cocktails and service were outstanding. Definitely recommend it and will be back soon.
