Proceed with extreme caution foreigners
A CAUTIONARY review. Enter at your own risk visitors. Lets get the basics out of the way first. We knew very well that this was a pricey place. We had the "famous" roast chicken with the fries - this was our only food. I figured a whole chicken for 2 was enough at lunch. Canadians have a roast chicken culture, coast to coast chains specialize in just that, so maybe I'm jaded or biased. The chicken was very good, but not the best meal you'll eat in Pairs by far. The fries i might sell a child for. Bread and butter was also good. Ambiance.. meh, i'm pretty sure the tablecloths were the same material as an 80's junior bridesmaids outfit I had: peach overload. The fruit set up was very nice though. You will smell of roast chicken when you leave and for hours after. HOWEVER and here's where my caution begins, if the price is not listed ASK. You are brought a tome of a wine list. Maybe 40-50 pages. It was lunch so we simply asked for a glass of white. I have never had a GLASS (yes one) of white wine cost €26!! Thats $39 Canadian. For one glass. (Keep reading it gets better) I have had espresso in Michelin starred restaurants - and L'Ami Louis is not one. You expect to pay a premium in those kinds of places... but €9? Thats highway robbery. I left feeling rather used, like i was paying a tourist tax because they didn't want us there. Considering there were only two tables, including us, occupied- they could do worse than some bougie foodies. In short, I would strongly suggest you could have TWO better meals in Paris for what this one lunch cost.

Amazing from start to finish. An authentic French bistro with great food and service. We ordered the snails, garden salad, and duck confit and garlic potatoes. All magnificent. A definite must visit when in Paris.
Be the first to ReplyA very difficult to book restaurant especially for tourists yet rewarding if you do get a table...
Restaurants serving Bresse chicken can be found throughout Paris (as you can see from my other reviews in this trip). While Chez l'Ami Louis is not the most expensive, this is considered to be on the high side. Booking is essential as it is a very small and cosy restaurant (tables packed literally next to each other with just enough room for guests to tuck in. We had a few of the signature dishes like escargots, cuisses de grenouilles and of course their signature poulet roti. All dishes were nicely prepared but the frog's legs may be too oily for some tastebuds... The shoe-string fries and green salad were of high standards as well. Just a note: this is a quite traditional restaurant where online booking is not available. You either have to call yourself or ask concierge to arrange for you.
Be the first to ReplyOld School. And French in all the ways.
First things first, the food is delicious. And perfect. Scallops Provençal to start. Followed by the whole roast chicken, of course, and frites, with an enormous salad to cut the richness. The mixed berries with crème fraîche for dessert were summer perfect. In February. Not sure how they do that. It was a lot of food for two but we attacked with pleasure and left only a pile of bones, a few cold frites and a random lettuce leaf. The waiters treated us with benign neglect, which was to be expected because we are neither French nor famous. The atmosphere was fun and festive and we will definitely return. As an aside, I have been wanting to go to L’Ami Louis ever since I read the Calvin Trillin article in the April 2005 issue of Gourmet magazine. I was not disappointed.

A must do when in Paris, order the roast chicken and the house potatoes and you can thank me later! Great spot for a birthday too.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Restaurant
Atmosphere was excellent, restaurant has such character and a Paris 'vibe' service was great but above all the food was perfect. From the foi gras to the insanely juicy chicken and the incredible chocolate gateu it was perfect - thank you!! Ignore the overly sensitive diners leaving negative reviews, this is France not the US for goodness sake. Come with an open mind, sit back relax and enjoy

But it's the best bistro in Paris. Nothing rivals the simplicity of excellence. Don't over-order. Portions are in line with prices.
Be the first to ReplyVERY SALTY AND VERY EXPENSIVE
T E R R I B L E. Very salty, very overpriced, very small table, very difficult to get in and the place is not pretty, very old. Food portions are HUGE and not in a good sense, badly presented. The foie gras and the truffle is good but that’s it. The waiters were kind and attentive but definitely WOULD NOT RECOMMEND and WOULD NOT COME BACK. Again the worst part was everything was EXTREMELY SALTY.
Be the first to ReplyNo value for money!!
The price/vale of the food options is awful. Food not worth the price paid. Great wine list and attentive service but it just can’t offset merely adequate food for the prices charged. Nevermore……
Be the first to ReplyExceptionally good
It was so difficult to reserve a table here but it was worth all the troubles. Every dish we had was exceptionally good and the service was very good , very friendly. We will go back there again..
Be the first to ReplyFavorite restaurant anywhere!!
Visited Paris for our 10th Anniversary and our hotel concierge sent us to Chez L’ami Louis. It is a very special place!! Very small and it feels like you are stepping back in time. As Americans who speak very limited French it was a little intimidating at first as the menu was all in French and it clearly was not a tourist spot. The staff couldn’t have been any nicer. They helped us with the menu and wine and made us feel like we belonged. Escargot, toasted French bread, amazing salad and a whole chicken. Couldn’t have imagined a better meal. Great recommendation of wine too. After they made sure we had a ride home. If you can get a reservation here I couldn’t speak more highly of a restaurant. Truly my favorite night in a restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyMy last time at Chez L’Ami Louis
I have been going to Chez L’Ami Louis for many years, but tonight was my last visit. I always gave it good reviews as the chicken, as expensive as it is, was always great. My reservation tonight was at 7:30, as that is when they opened. I knew not to get there early from past experience , as they will not let you in. I arrived at 7:32 and the door was unlocked. When I went in, all of the waiters were eating dinner, and after a while, they sent one to seat us. As we were the only ones there, they continued their dinner and we did not get someone to get us water until 7:55 when they finished their meal. Finally the waiter took our order. We ordered Evian room temperature, but he wasn’t listening, and it came chilled. I ordered a HALF bottle of wine , and again not listening, he brought what I thought was a fill bottle. After it was opened and poured, I asked if it was a half bottle, and he said it was a full bottle. I told him I ordered a half bottle, and he told me to just drink half. The chicken price did not appear to increase since my 2019 visit, but I believe that the size of the chicken is smaller. While it was plenty for the 2 of us, I presume it was their way of increasing the price. Sadly, I do not think it was as good as before, and I only come here for the chicken, as I always thought it was amazing and was the reason I always came back. We ordered Baba Rum for desert. It was very large and could serve 4, but was nothing to write home about except they let you add the rum, which if the rum in the bottle is as labeled, they use an expensive rum. We left half of it. When the bill came, I noticed that I was charged for 2 glasses of wine at 25 Euro instead of the half bottle price of 35 Euro. I didn’t want to get into an argument with them, since they are known to be rude, and then discovered that the Baba Rum was not on the bill. Being normally honest, I felt with the poor quality of the Baba Rum and the overcharge on the wine, that we were even, and I just paid the bill without saying anything. Sadly, after many visits and many positive reviews, Chez L’Ami Louis saw me for the last time.I
Be the first to ReplyFabulous French Bistro Fit For Foodies
Go hungry to this wonderful, historic bistro. Huge quantities of delicious food await. Unlike some French restaurants, you won't be disappointed by the size of the meal. The sights and smells in this place are wonderful. The quintessential bistro. I ate my first meal here back in the 1980's. Great then; still fantastic. Highly recommended. It's not cheap, but you will remember this meal for all the right reasons. I listed this as fine dining pricewise, but it's a casual place. Service was friendly and professional too.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous as always !
" heaven on earth " : that's for us l'ami luis !
We have eaten here more than 20 times.
Our favourite restaurant in Paris.
But remember "trust you have to earn " also as a client.
The more you come here the more you will appreciate.
Finally some people who do not take themselves seriously !
Thanks for the great evening !
You are the best !
Very bad behavior from Le Chef - arrogant and bad atmosphere
Really nice location and welcome from the waitress - so a good start. Order a tenderloin steak (85 euros) so my expectations was high. They served me the end of the tenderloin and the meat wasn’t good at all so we called the waitress and he called the Le chef He was VERY rood and was blame me that the meat wasn’t bad - so he created a VERY bad atmosphere in the restaurant and at our table - had to argue for getting a new one 🤗 not what I expect from such a restaurant 😉 so Not value for money at all - way to pricy for the quality of food.
Would not go again !!
What an Ambiance
You can feel how was Paris on 1900
Good food
Rustic one but high quality of each ingredient
, generous portion
Waiters team are typically French , they play funny game with coats
It s expansive and look like only for tourists specially US !
Super moment
