The Restaurant Does Not Live up to the Michelin Star - Not Recommended.
When a restaurant proudly displays the red 2022 Michelin star hanging on the wall, we as guests are reminded that we are in for a culinary experience. The red plaque conjures a particular picture of excellence and expectation for the experience to be had. Instead walking away disappointed after spending $750 for two (Dinner, one drink each, coffee, and sparkling water) is not what we had in mind after three hours as guests. The restaurant adds a 20% service charge and various other fees including health fees (they charge extra for keeping the restaurant clean). Small details matter – we had clearly requested an outside table for our special occasion, which was clearly ignored. We ended up sitting outside but the oversight was the first unpleasant experience of the evening. white serving dishes and plates were severely scratched up, coffee mugs were mismatched with the rest of the service plates, the sugar holder was totally out of place, and the sugar cube tongue looked like it was purchased from the 99-cent store. My coffee mug had a visible crack/chip on the lip. The Christofle Hotel, France silverware was severely used and were entirely scratched. We asked for a cappuccino and were told that the milk frother is out of order. It was not becoming of a Michelin-rated restaurant. The two stars belong to the service staff only. They are friendly, cordial, knowledgeable, attentive, and very capable. The food presentation was decent, but the items offered were either salty or very sweet; they were on the two extremes of the spectrum where they needed to be. For example, the souffle under the caviar was too salty as caviar is generally salty by nature; there was no balance. The chicken liver mousse was pungent and did not taste fresh to me. The elk was tasty but for the love of God, why would you cut that meat with the grain? The Frisee with Umeboshi vinaigrette was unbearably salty, neither one of us could eat it (and I like my food on the salty side). The desserts were nicely presented, but the sweets were too sweet. Salty caramel was too salty; I did a very small tasting and I love salty caramel. What else can I say? We might have caught them on an inopportune evening; however, the Michelin Stared restaurant cannot afford a bad day.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible food / Waste of money
We had high hopes dining at this Michelin star restaurant but were left scratching our heads for the utterly disappointing experience that we had. The two stars given is only for the wait staff which were pleasant and provided great service but the food was as terrible, and inedible as it comes. Every item was either extremely salty or sweet. There wasn't even one delightful bite throughout the course of their mystery menu! I think they know that the food is not edible so as part of the main course they bring a thick slice of bread to ensure you don't leave the restaurant starving. The plates and serving dishes were scratched, the cutlery is procured second hand from a hotel in Paris. All in all, in our opinion this place is not worthy to call itself Michelin star and we have dined in quite a few. Save your money as there are many other options / choices of restaurants in the bay area that leave you in awe of their food and extraordinary experience. Will not be returning to give this place a second chance. Utterly a waste of money!

Amazing dinner. The food was over the top. The service was perfect. The elk for my main hands down the best I’ve ever had. It’s pricey but you very much get what you pay for.
Be the first to ReplyNot quite the amazing experience it was a year ago but definitely worth the effort
I generally loved my recent meal at Chez TJ but didn't find any particular dish that amazed me. One thing I found especially fun this time was the sommelier's depth of knowledge and patience in describing the origin and fermenting of the wines. The wine pairings were great.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin Star Experience
We expected a Michelin star experience and that’s what we got. The setting was wonderful (patio), service was exquisite, and the sommelier extremely helpful. What our courses were going to be and even how many there’d be was kept secret until the end. Not all of the dishes were a home run, but nobody came away disappointed.

Our anniversary dinner was a delightful experience for the senses! We chose an indoor table and the ambiance and service were outstanding. The courses are all a surprise so an open mind is required. The plates had small portions but the sheer abundance of food after many courses left me a bit overly full at the end of the evening.

My wife and I have also been enjoying Chez TJ for more than 30 years. It is expensive, but worth it for a big splurge like an anniversary or an IPO. Like other Michelin star restaurants, it consists of many little courses of tasty exotic food tailored to your dietary needs. It doesn’t seem like you are eating a lot , but by the end of the meal we felt stuffed. They have three levels of wine pairings. The best vintage wine pairings were outstanding. But you pay a premium for the privilege. We sat outside on a warm summer evening.

I came here on April 7th of 2021. The food they served was fresh as the herbs came right from the garden. The staff was also extremely polite. They would take the time to explain every course they served and cleaned up the table once you finished. I came here paying $200/person and got a 10 course meal. Please keep in mind that the courses between each day may vary.

We were originally scheduled to come here in Dec for our wedding anniversary, but due to covid19 shelter in place order, our appointment was delayed til this month. We are so glad to be back dining indoor again. Regarding covid19 protective measures, all staff members wear face-covering at all time and guests are required to wear face-covering when not at their table. There are face masks available at the door if guests forgot theirs, and hand sanitizer is readily available as well. Indoor tables are very spaced out, only 2 tables per room. Chez TJ's setting is very intimate, almost feel like you are dining in a friend's house. We had incredible service the entire night from our server, Josh, who was upbeat, caring and professional. Thomas, the sommelier was also wonderful! My husband ordered the nightly wine pairing and enjoyed all the pairings which accompanied the dishes. Thomas is very knowledge on the bottles served. Regarding the food, we had a total of 12 courses for our evening. The menu changes constantly depending on seasons and ingredients availability so there is no way to know ahead of time what will be served. We liked everything an couldn't find a dish we did not enjoy. In particular, we were blown away by the iberico ham raviolis with sunchoke puree. The pasta was served perfect al dante, the juicy filling released a mouthful of umami as soon as you bit through the center, it was a pure joy to eat. We both think Chez TJ is a great choice for a nice date or for special occasions. Fairly priced given the quality of food and service and we look forward to be back in the future.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant
I've dined at Chez TJ for over 30 years, usually once or twice a year. I was very impressed by the outstanding service that I received at my first visit which made my wife and I feel like we were really special. The excellent service and fabulous cuisine is what keeps bringing me back. Yes, the the menu is pricey, but the atmosphere is quiet and romantic unlike many highly rated restaurants where its so noisy that you can't hear the other guests at your table. Service and courses are well paced and leisurely allowing for ample time to enjoy the food, wine and your dining partner(s). The meal could easily last over 3 hours but even with a late reservation the staff allows you as much time as you need to enjoy your meal and dessert. Parking in downtown Mountain View is free and not hard to find within a a couple blocks. Well deserving of their Michelin star!.
