We've eaten take-out from Cholada 3 or 4 times, since moving to Malibu 2 years ago. But they reopened their dining rooms again several months ago... and it was high time to finally dine-in at this lovely Thai eatery close to Topanga (or as my wife keeps tongue-twisting! POtanga) Beach. The restaurant has a great beach-side neighborhood feel. It skips the tourist trappings and targets straightforward authenticity. Struggling to understand what "Cholada" actually means, I read the Origin Story about this restaurant and it's American Dream owners when we came home last night. I'm a huge Thai food fan, enjoying it for many years from Los Angeles to San Jose and now Malibu-- so the bar is set pretty high. Cholada succeeds on all counts. Although, we weren't crazy about their Thai tea. But everything else has been great. The Tom Yom last night was tummy yummy (see what I did there?) My basil, beef, pepper dish was perfectly spiced. My honey's curry was purry (sorry, now I can't help myself) and the helpings were huge! The dining rooms were lovely AND lively. And the servers all charming as heck. The restaurant is definitely worthy of your next coastal drive. And I still do not know what Cholada means!!

Love this kinda hidden gem! The decor and food is very authentic and delicious! Every time I come here I'm never disappointed. I came here after a long hike at Los liones with a friend! We scarfed down our food and still had so much left over so we ate it for dinner too. Double the deliciousness!!!
Be the first to Reply$$$ prices for a $ vibe.
I paid $23 for Pad Thai to go including a modest tip, and the portion was lunch/child size. However, the food is excellent, and good luck finding another Asian restaurant within miles.

Went here over the weekend bc i heard such great things about the food. Unfortunately i was so disappointed. The food was so bland, no flavor, t's pricey and was a total let down. would not recommend this place.. The service was fine and I really wanted to like it, but never ever ever going back. This place needs a revamp starting w the chef!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is very bad here.
No flavor !!!!! All the dishes that we ordered had no flavor. Very disappointed!!! Spent over $100 for bad food... Idk why people gave this restaurant 4 stars. It's really bad. I wouldn't recommend any of my friends to eat here. I'd rather pay $100 somewhere else along PCH & malibu for tasty, flavorful food. I'm sorry cholada but you guys either need a new chef or need to close...

This is the most genuinely authentic traditional Thai food I have ever tasted. No other Thai food restaurants compare. The food is always fresh, absolutely delicious and made with love you can smell, taste and feel. I highly recommend bringing your loved ones here. The coconut curry is phenomenal
Be the first to ReplyDon't get the messy curry noodles.
It was on their special "Chef Recommended" short list of 3 items. Never had anything so disgusting at any restaurant. The noodles are thin and totally overcooked to the point of being mushy. There is nothing that went with these noodles except for 3 large lumps of potatoes. No other vegetables at all. Just potatoes, soggy noodles, peanuts, beef, and weak curry sauce. This restaurant might have other better dishes, but please be careful if you decide to trust the Chef's "Recommendation". Don't.
Be the first to ReplyYum! I got the crab fried rice and green curry.
I bet its all good

Run down shack in the middle of Malibu with the BEST tasting Thai food you've ever had. Right on PCH but as close to authentic Thai food as it's going to get in LA. I've never eaten in, but take-out is divine. Great for a picnic on the beach or to take home and enjoy in your PJs. Food tastes perfect after a 30 min drive home.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Thai food.
Have driven by 1000 times and finally stopped by. Inside is small and they are super covid scared, require masks even after the mandate is lifted. Veggies and fish are super fresh, portions are good. Love the brown rice. This is the best Thai food I've had in LA.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has a nice ambiance.
We sat on their outdoor patio with no wait on a friday at around 6:30. Veggie spring rolls were a great starter. Perfectly crispy and served with a sweet and sour sauce. Their Chicken satay was alright. I tried the special garlic fried ribs, which were essentially rib tips. They had a lot of meat and very little fat. They also came with a sweet and sour sauce, but you can request spicy chili paste. They were tasty, but are dryer ribs as opposed to those with sauce. Veggie fried rice was a bit boring and $17.95. That was the only thing on the menu I felt was a tad expensive. Next time I would get the pad thai. Service was attentive and friendly. Thai food in malibu. What's not to love!
Be the first to ReplyWent there today for lunch.
The waitress demanded that we wear a mask while sitting at out table. She had a rotten attitude and said to get out of the restaurant. There was not one person in the restaurant. Don't waste your time going there. Also, I recommend that you never use the restroom there. You see how filthy it is where the food is prepared.
Be the first to ReplyMost bland thing I've ever ate.
Don't even bother coming here. The food has no flavor and it's so overpriced for no reason. The shrimp smells. Not properly cleaned.
Be the first to ReplyTotal legit Thai food.
The herbs are soooo fresh and they really add to the flavors of the dishes. Pad Thai is prob the best I've had! Glass noodle salad, me krow salad amazing! Everything is so good.

Our party of 6 (3 kids and 3 adults) came in after a beautiful day at the beach in Malibu. 2 of us had been to Cholada before and had a decent experience, therefore we suggested it to my sister who was joining us with her kids. I'm embarrassed to have even invited anyone to this horrible restaurant. We're locals who love contributing to mom and pop spots but after yesterday's treatment and the conditions we witnessed we will never set foot here again. First and foremost let me start of by saying that you know a place is dirty when the 7 year old in the group is appalled by the conditions of the bathroom. There was toilet paper everywhere, feces on the inside of the toilet bowl, and rolls of paper dispersed through the small unventilated bathroom instead of properly placed. My SO reported a similar situation in the men's restroom as well. Both restrooms looked like they were not serviced at all throughout the day. To make matters worse, the moment you step out of the restroom, a huge trash can is awaiting at the corner of the corridor that connects the inside of the restaurant to the outside deck - and by big I mean huge pilling heap of a trash can that emits a horrid smell. Unfortunately that's not even where the problems for Cholada end. Not only does Cholada take the cake for their unsanitary conditions, but the service is even worse. Our waitress was not only curt but incredibly rude. She greeted us stiffly and went on to take our orders while only half paying attention to us, so much so, that she missed two questions about the menu and then hastly answered them. One of our meals was missing an ingredient that was very clearly articulated to her, and because she never checked up on us, we couldn't even correct it and when I say never checked up on us, I mean never. NOT ONCE FOR REFILLS, OR EVEN TO SEE HOW THE FOOD WAS. To add insult to injury they then charged us a 18 % gratuity (because we were a 6 person group, despite 3 being children) that wasn't even deserved.Honestly between the lack of basic hygiene, the inattentiveness of the service, and the fact that the food is okay at best, I would not dine her. Drive a little further into Santa Monica save yourself the headache by visiting any other Thai restaurant but this one.
Be the first to ReplyHygiene at this place is hands down terrible.
They've served me a thai tea topped with a flock of dust which looked similar to a vent hole dust. When I asked to replace my drink, the server returned 3 seconds later with a drink that looked like exactly the same glass of tea. We've ordered a tom kha which was sour and not flavorful, and I found a hair that definitely did not belong to me in my soup. Their bathroom smells bad and walls are covered in drops of old dirt. Overall I'm very disappointed with such little respect to people. Why even bother to serve food with such low standards on basic hygiene.

After a long hike in Topanga State Park, we were starving! Its a cute little thai restaurant by the PCH and they check for vaccination card if you plan on dining in.Cholada Thai Beach Cuisine was just down the road and it we ordered three things.- Chicken Pad Kee Maw: The most disappointing drunken noodles I have eaten in my life and I am not being dramatic. It was genuinely filled with disappointment. It lacked color, taste, love, soul and life. I will never order this dish from here ever again. - Eggplant: This was the most amazing eggplant dish I have ever tried. I am only familiar with the cantonese style eggplant dish but thai basil eggplant is on another level of amazing. Love the combination of flavor and I still think about the dish to this day.- Coconut curry soup: On par with other thai restaurants. Great!
Be the first to ReplyI was up at pepperdine and was looking for some thai food.
I had to drive down the coast but it was definitely worth it!The papaya salad here is awesome. It was big enough for 3 to 4 people. I would come back here just for that! I also ordered a green chicken curry, the taste was just exactly what I was looking for.I would definitely come back here.
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming here for ages and haven't left a review.
What the heck?! Good is always, always incredible. Staff has been super friendly to me and who ever I'm with every time. They have outdoor seating in the back which I usually prefer since it's quieter but if you're there during the day, sitting out front by the window is nice (if you're allowed.)Food! This last time we really bought way too much for two of us. Were we mad about it? Absolutely not. We chose the fried chicken and were recommended to get sticky rice with it. DO IT. It's amazing. Pad see ew was everything I wanted it to be. Kanom Jeep was pretty good but not a star of the show. Nam Sod Kaw Tod is aaaalways a good idea. It has the spicy, sour, crunchy, salty, overall goodness I search for with this food. My goodness. Yellow curry was better than your average and absolutely worth getting.I may be forgetting something but definitely not for lack of flavor. Also, thai tea was delicious. Can't wait to be back! Worth my 2-3hr drive!
