Brendan Sodikoff is one of the most creative and innovative restaurant entrepreneurs in Chicago. He has opened several outstanding eateries in the city and Ciccio Mio is the latest--and one of the best, if early rave notices are any indication. Located at 226 West Kinzie in Chicago's River North neighborhood, in the shadow of the Merchandise Mart, between Orleans and Wells, this Italian restaurant opened in October and scored an immediate hit with patrons with its old-time charm, old-world atmosphere, red velvet booths, antiques and tantalizing dishes. Open at 5 p.m. daily, Ciccio Mio is proof that there always is room for another outstanding Italian restaurant in a town filled with them. My wife and I started with beef, pork and veal meatballs with parmesan and herbs, traditional wedding soup with meatballs, parmesan and baby kale and the house salad with baby lettuce, salami, shaved parmesan, olives and red wine vinaigrette. For an entree, my wife chose skewered swordfish with pickled peppers, baby artichoke, roasted onion and escarole with vesuvio potatoes. I enjoyed a coal fired ribeye steak with roasted garlic, fried rosemary, broccoli and vesuvio potatoes. For dessert, we shared three scoops of chocolate gelato and a couple of cannolis stuffed with whipped cream. After only a few months, Sodikoff appears to have produced another winner in Ciccio Mio.
