Gorgeous view over the city and the lake,... that's it!
For dinner my wife ordered roasted scallop for a starter, which was already cold. For the main we both ordered linguine with lobster tails that we could not eat due to no-taste pasta sauce. Besides, I suspect they really use their hope-made pasta. The best one was sliced veal Zurich style ordered by our daughter but you can get much better one around Zurich's Parade Platz. All in all, the view from the restaurant was gorgeous. Probably, you go there for drinks but not for dining.
Be the first to Reply5 Stars Venue with 1 Star Service
I came with group of my family for New Year’s brunch on the 1st of January. After celebrating the new years we planned to have the brunch around noon. So I reserved the table at noon. But what a disappointment when we arrived there. Most of the food are not anymore available, so we literally just get the rest of the food and apparently they don’t refill the food selections. 5 stars my ass!! (And they expected us to came in 5 stars attires..???) That’s not the only problem, the staff are so tensed, you can feel it in the atmosphere. Oh well this might gonna be our last visit to this place, there are plenty of places to have brunch in Zurich are which are much better in service and food selections, besides we only came there for the VIEW!!

We went for our Xmas team dinner last night to Clouds, the view was very nice... and that's all that can be said in favour of this place. We had to ask repeatedly for the menus, the water, the wine...worse: we waited 2 hours for our dinner (btw we noticed that were not the only table with these issues) and from the server of our table we just got a "well, I did my job, I brought the bread and the wine, the kitchen is not my responsibility". The managers around and the host offer lukewarm excuses and left the table without even hearing us. On top of the delay, four of us had ordered Zurich geschnetzeltes (which came in little pans), and when the main course finally arrived they had forgotten the pan for one of us. Instead of apologizing, when we mentioned it they told us that the idea was that one of the pans was for two of us to share...even though we had four supports for the pans and even though the three pans had exactly the same portion (and a rather small one at that...). When the bill came not only did they not give us any discount or at least offer something, but they were extremely rude with us. Considering the price and the presumed "category" of the establishment the whole thing was a disgrace. Never again.

Come to this place if you:
- Ever wondered how it is possible to waste a lobster to the point that you come to believe it grew up in the Dead Sea ; it was insanely salty
- Eat a tasteless watery soup branded as truffles soup
- Serve the best pig breed (Iberian) on the market with ketchup
The best among all the things we ate was the small chocolate balls which were probably bought from Läderach!
Date Night
Spent a really nice valentines at the clouds restaurant. The food was a bit too salty (but still good) however the Service was amazing. Our waitress Luana did an amazing job. Thank you very much, you made our evening! :)
Be the first to ReplyConsistently disappointing, across the board
We have recently returned to Zurich after several years in French-speaking Switzerland and abroad. And so, we are enjoying our gastronomic rediscovery tour in the Limmat city. So far, we were not disappointed by restaurants like Gran Sasso, Real (always a pleasure to converse with Bruno), Sala of Tokyo, the Sonnenberg (though we were first hesitant due to the departure of Jacky Donatz) and alike.
So, this Saturday, we managed to finally get a table in the “Clouds” in Zurich’s Prime Tower. Due to the privileged view, 12 Gault-Milau points and the many good guest reviews, we obviously expected to find ourselves in seventh heaven. Or at least close to it. But unfortunately, that was not quite the case.
THE AROUND THE DRUM IN A VISUALLY ATTRACTIVE LOCATION, WHERE SERVICE QUALITY IS NOT UP TO SPEED
One thing in advance. When you go to the “Clouds", you have to bring along LOTS OF PATIENCE, as the waiting times are quite long at times. Be that at the elevator, which will eventually take you to the 35th floor. Or be that especially at the table. It took around 45 minutes from ordering to receiving the starters, followed by another 40 minutes to the main course. This can be acceptable, if agreed with the guests accordingly. But only then.
In return, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the city. But that's about it.
Already the presentation of the “catch of the day” gives you a short glimpse at the standards, according to which this place seems to be run. And also the fact that the menu is only available in German is just another example of a somewhat careless management of the overall guest experience. For a flagship restaurant in a world-famous and international metropolis, such as Zurich, that is normally not quite an acceptable standard.
A DISAPPOINTING GASTRONOMIC DISCOVERY
We toasted with rosé champagne. As a starter, we then ordered champagne soup with truffle and the OMOSO marrow bone with pickles and toasted bread (aka Os à Moëlle), followed by an Angus beef fillet (“medium rare”) with potatoes, beans and rocket salad as the main course. The main course was accompanied by a bottle of Aalto (Ribera del Duero).
The wine was excellent, as always.
Unfortunately, however, and with the soup, we couldn't make out the difference to an instant asparagus cream soup, available in any nearby standard grocery store. Also, the truffles had apparently been forgotten. At least we couldn't identify them visually and/or in terms of taste.
The first actual corpus delicti, however, was the Os à Moëlle (or the half bone, to be more precise). Cooked too hard, therefore dry and sometimes even burnt, this unsuccessful starter set the first exclamation point to our remarkable dining experience. Logically, we returned it to the kitchen.
After a short consultation with the kitchen and the supervisor, the waiter offered his apologies and promised not to charge us for this mishap. Additionally, he offered the eventual dessert “for free”. So far, so good, even if we did not ask for any form of cost reduction / compensation, but simply expected a correctly prepared marrow bone.
So, it went on to the main course, which followed the starter seamlessly in terms of quality. Here, too, the meat was not cooked correctly (more on the borderline between "medium well" and "well done”), while the taste was only “OK". We also missed the beans here, while the rocket salad had simply been replaced with iceberg lettuce. Minor details, alongside a fairly careless visual arrangement. But overall, this does not meet our standards (and the price tag). Although we were pretty gutted at this point in time, we did not bother to complain about the main course anymore.
Given the experience up to this moment in time, we skipped the dessert to the favour of a mint tea, before ordering the bill.
With another 10-minute waiting time elapsed, we started to look out for our waiter. And so, we accidentally noticed that he was caught up in another discussion with his superior, before coming straight over to our table to present the bill. Whilst praising that they would not charge us for the two mint teas, the Os à Moëlle was of course nonetheless still being billed. We did not protest any further, though the waiter was well aware of our annoyance and apologised accordingly. At times, one has to leave the dog the bone, in order not to get bitten (i.e. end up in just another disagreeable discussion).
CONCLUSION AND NEXT STEPS
Whilst the waiter has really tried hard to turn around an overall disappointing experience, the rest is unfortunately not quite up to speed. It seems that the “Clouds” is more focused on defending its profit, than on simply sticking to a promise, which has been forced upon itself due to a self-inflicted mishap.
Perhaps, they speculated that we were “out-of-towners” and would likely not return. If so, this has been quite a miscalculation. We have a strong tendency to be repeat buyers at, and ambassadors of, our favourite locations, whenever we like the product and the rendered service. In the case of the “Clouds”, that is unfortunately not the case. So, we will just simply not return to this place and instead host our guests elsewhere.
The next time as soon as next Saturday, when a group of foreign friends and family members will visit Zurich for the first time. We will introduce them to the Kronenhalle, as we traditionally know that we are in good hands with Peter Schärer and his team. And under the crafty oversight of Dominique Godat, we know that also the service team will live up to our our high expectations.
As far as the “Clouds” is concerned, it’s a pity. The location is definitely an impressive asset. But it does not suffice to compensate for the rest, which is mediocre at best. According to our opinion, they should be paying greater attention to an overall impeccable guest experience, in order to defend the hefty price point. Otherwise, they risk coming across as if they were acting from the top of an ivory tower. After all, the initial top duo has already left the place. And with them, valuable Gault Milau points and a Michelin Star was lost. One would hence wish that this place can actually live up to its prime location, at the top of the Prime Tower.
