Sadly disappointed
The 6 course taster menu was a birthday gift for my 60th. I was really looking forward to it. Sadly neither of us really enjoyed any of the courses. I think some of the taste combinations were to shock rather than satisfy. Eg a very sweet and strongly flavoured gingerbread macaroon filled with th extremely salty and strong Roquefort cheese. Both of which I would eat separately but not in combination. The onion soup was lovely and I expected to like my partners mushrooms in fondue - two of my favourite combinations - but I couldnโt eat it. Shredded beef in an edible tulip not only seemed pretentious, we also found it too heavily flavoured with star anise as to be pleasant. When I scraped off a very bitter sorbet palette cleanser to get to the nice lemon flavour beneath, the waiter asked if I was full or didnโt like it. When I said I didnโt like it he pulled a face at me. Very sneery! Even my English breakfast tea at the end I had to leave as it was like dishwater. Sadly sadly disappointed as it was an expensive and thoughtful gift.

In 2022 my girlfriend and I enjoyed accumulating 9 stars of restaurant visits. This year weโre aiming for 12 and the 3rd of the year was Club Gascon. The dining room itself is very nice. Well presented and laid out. Overall the food was very good. I wonโt go into details of each course, but I would say it was clearly Michelin level food. What let the experience down was the service. Firstly, I found the sommelier a little condescending and difficult to understand. I am no expert in wine (thatโs why they have sommeliers!) but Iโm also no idiot. Iโve never had this difficulty elsewhere. Secondly, the wait staff werenโt attentive. I had to pour our water all night and request another bottle when it was finished (meaning they did not ask if I wanted a second bottle). Finally, the timing between courses was also too long. There was just no rhythm to the service. Iโve not experienced this in any other Michelin starred Resto. These may all sound whiny and 1st world problems (which they are), but when youโre shelling out this kind of money AND competitors offer far better service, it is expected.

There was something that I just didnโt appreciate about the food. Some courses were nice but others I felt were odd choices or combinations or just too experimental that they were just not nice! Too much โmousseโ or jelly in many of the courses. One course was called โsweet breadโ and I had no idea what it was. Having asked the waiter (see more below), he just said again โitโs sweet bread, itโs called sweet breadโ. Clearly I didnโt know what sweet bread was and he made no effort to explain. I didnโt eat this course. Service was average - poor at best and got noticeably worse, the busier it got. Very rude older gentleman waiter who, when we asked to order some drinks, having said โcan we order a drink pleaseโ said to us, โnot from me,noโ! An odd man serving our drinks who was not proactive at all in suggesting or selling drinks. Underwhelmed! I wouldnโt go back here sadly and Iโm unsure if it deserves its Michelin star.

We had the Christmas Taster Menu and Wine accompaniment. Good staff. Great location and ambiance. Some of the courses we nice. However some were not. Extremely rare stuffed Quail was not pleasant. Maybe its down to our taste but for a bill of ยฃ750 it did not live up to the billing.

The menu is so interesting, I had forgotten how sophisticated food could be after COVID. The foies gras flan was the most interesting treatment, the creamy richness of the liver was paired perfectly with thin slices of peeled cranberries. The sorbet was served on a block of Himalayan salt which added the perfect counterpoint to the sweet dessert. The cassoulet had all the rich complex flavors of the dish in a tiny artistic package. The wine pairings were outstanding, but the service puts this place at the top. Francesca was just so lovely and introduced us to the unbelievably talented and gracious chef Pascal Aussignac. Club Gascon made celebrating our 20th anniversary unforgettable in the best way, they are awesome!

I attended a dinner at this restaurant organised by a wine and food society that I belong to. We were a party of 12. The whole menu was a little โtoo cleverโ for me. An amuse bouche that consisted of squid ink and white chocolate, and a starter of raw eggs and vermicelli. The only choice was for the main course which was skate or duck, I was only one of two who had ordered the skate and it was quite good. The duck was tough and most diners left it. The dessert was equally too clever. All a little too pretentious and ยฃ125 a head I wonโt be going back!

We enjoyed the experience overall, but the food was a bit disappointing given the price. For me, the dishes lacked the wow factor. Service was really good.

Such an awful place, in 30 years in London I have never had such a terrible restaurant experience. We only manage 3 of the 5 courses as we cancelled the others, it took 2 hours to deliver those 3 courses, 2 of which were inedible. We ordered drinks which were so poor we returned them, which was disappointing as we had to wait an hour for those drinks to arrive. In the second hour they were able to manage just one more beverage, service was so slow. I am not sure I have ever spent so much to leave a restaurant so hungry and unfulfilled. I was one of 12 diners and we all left feeling the same. Even the layout is questionable, the bathroom is in the private dining area and on leaving the bathroom I had to point out the disposable gloves that had been dropped on the floor, only for the waiter to look irritated. Poor service, poor food, awful experience.
Be the first to ReplyLovely tasting menu experience
The restaurant has a really elegant feel to it and whilst not full when we visited it had a nice atmosphere. We chose the tasting menu and each course was of the highest quality with fresh ingredients and a thoroughly enjoyable experience and would visit again.

Living in France, I'm spoilt for choice. But I'm not sure if I would be able to easily find such sublime flavours as I was served last night, with Club Gascon's tasting menu. The cuisine of the south west of France is wonderful, but here the chef takes the flavours to new heights, with flavour combinations that you would never think of, but explode in the mouth, taking you to food heaven! Both me and my companion have eaten in many fine (and Michelin star) restaurants around the world, but we both agreed that the meal was perhaps the best ever. I can't understand why it only has one star. I have been here a couple of times maybe 20 years ago when I used to live nearby. Tucked away beside Smithfield Market, it's very calm and even though every table was taken, the service was superb. Next door, Cellar Gascon was buzzing. I used to often call by on my way home from work. Here they have a super wine list and serve little plates of food. It's a meal that I will remember for a very long time.

This was a dining experience. Professional and efficient hosts and staff and an incredible menu paired with fine wines. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I canโt fault it.
Be the first to ReplyAwful experience due to obnoxious service.
Extremely uncomfortable visit due to the obnoxious behaviour of the sommelier and the waiter. There is no reason for service staff to talk down to clients! This was a table which comprised a professor of finance at a eminent london university and two successful business owners and a medical consultant and hence a complete embarrassment for me as I booked the location.
Arrived and had a frost welcome. Although the restaurant was empty bar one table, we were put next to that table- would have suggested spacing clients out to improve dining experience- but from the rest of the experience, I donโt think they care!
Sat down, ordered a bottle of white- was given a sample to try I remarked that it could be a cooler at which point the sommelier talk down that it was 6โC.i donโt mind being corrected or being told that it was the right temperature- itโs important, how itโs done and certainly the mannerism Itโs done needs to be addressed .
That immediately soured the atmosphere!
Then we had the waiter talk down to us like we could not understand the simple three course menu. What he should have done is spent more time explaining that there was no selection for desert and the cheese course was an option between the main and dessert rather than the option of desert with the supplement for cheese.
Unfortunately as the mood soured with the service. The food which was good and as irremediably unenjoyable.
The starters look playful and was good. The lamb cooked well. We were not taken by the desert which presented itself as a winter dish and look like it was invented for christmas only to be served at the end of March!
Very unhappy experience. All in the table concurred that it was the worse service experience and Will not be returning ever!
Outdated, underwhelming, uncomfortable.
Visited with my partner for my birthday this weekend. We are lucky enough to eat in some really wonderful places, Michelin stars included. This place, we feel, is rather lucky to have one.
The bread, with flavours of burnt pine needles, was incredible. That's where the compliments end. The food felt old fashioned, outdated, bland and one-dimensional. Of the seven courses that made up the tasting menu - the only option for that night - a fair bit of food was left unfinished or untouched and not once were we asked if everything was ok.
The wine pairing came with a poor attitude from the sommelier and at odd times - sometimes ten minutes before the "accompanying" dish, others five minutes into eating.
Perhaps all of this wouldn't have felt quite so bad if we had been made to feel more welcome. From the moment of arrival, the team were distant, superior and, occasionally, rude.
A very expensive experience, not one we ever intend on repeating.
Birthday meal
We had the 7course tasting menu with matching wines which both ticked all the boxes. Specifically the wine sommelier Francisca made this a memorable experience. Highly recommend this place. Also, Chef Pascal left my boyfriend a signed birthday card which was a nice touch.

What an amazing experience and an unforgettable evening.
The place is beautiful, the staff are so friendly and helpful and the food is just divine. Thank you for an amazing experience. We will be back.
Weโve done a few taster menus in various parts of the country. This is our favourite. So much thought and attention to detail. Every element was faultless.
A special taster menu treat
A truly wonderful evening, we enjoyed fabulous food and wine pairings, in an atmosphere of formal yet comfortable setting and friendly informative service. Would definitely return again to sample more of Chef Pascalโs heavenly creations.

Great food, exquisitely presented and full of investing flavour combinations. Attentive staff and a good sommelier.
Smoked bread amazing.
5 or 7 course taster menu depending on appetite and great little canapรฉs delightfully presented.
The area is also rich in history (Smithfields Market) and well worth a visit.
Magnificent
As another reviewer mentioned, this restaurant serves "artistic" food. Its not just tasty but also beautiful to look at. BBQ'ed wild mushroom eclade clam was brilliant. Also try their duck foie gras pebble. Not to forget the service which is world class. Highly recommended restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDoesn't live up to a 1 michelin star
Every person's taste buds are different and I felt the food needed more salt, would be nice to have it on the table even though am sure the chef seasoned it to how he wanted. I tasted a wine and the lady told me I was wrong in what I tasted, again with wine, there are no wrong answers. My partner expected a birthday plate or something, not just a card. When spending this sort of money, should be going above and beyond to please the diner. I also left without being reminded of my things in the cloakroom so had to return to collect. For a 1 star and this price range, I feel the standard was not met.
