An Experience unlike the rest
I literally donโt know where to start. It was a cold, quiet night. We got a little lost getting there due to a road closure. We were arriving towards the end of their seating time which we were unaware of. So parking was easy, and on our short walk to the little cabin restaurant, a man in the street with a flashlight tells us to move to the other side, because there was a bear. A bear? What? Seriously, there was a black bear, just standing casually 20 feet off the road. He was just hanging out and didnโt seem to mind anything, but it was surreal for us. Entering the cabin we were immediately greater by a warm fire, cozy atmosphere and a friendly waiter/bartender. We didnโt have a rez and it was almost too late, but he sat us anyway. He was delightful. After quickly ordering drinks, some amazing, fresh warm homemade bread arrived. I could have been happy eating just that. But the warm delicious drinks followed by incredible food meant we left stuffed! The tri tip was smokey and sweet, garlic mash and asparagus both super tasty. And the chicken filled with something like a cherry compote/stuffing?? then smothered in a mushroom sauce, yum. The atmosphere is charming, quaint, quirky and so very memorable. Itโs off the beaten path, and so very much worth the journey. An experience to be sure, and one not to be missed. Loved everything.

This is a hidden gem. Been going here since college at UCSB in the early '80's. Great spot, hidden in the canyon, with yes, a cold spring running through the property. Great rustic location, well worth the short trip off the 154.

Save yourself well over an hour and make a reservation 1st. It is really busy and seating is at a premium. Donโt kid yourself, this is located in a mountain setting. Dress accordingly especially if itโs been/is raining. The area is very muddy. Parking is at a real premium and expect that youโll be walking and parking along the street ~ 1/4 mile away. Once inside expect really good food and lots of it. The place is charming and unforgettable. Highly recommend the tri tip sandwich and onion rings. You really need to go.

Definitely worth a stop. My husband and daughter split a tri tip sandwich and loved it. Onion rings were amazing as was their grilled cheese with roasted red peppers and onion jam. Great people watching! Great array of beers.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed.
Very dsappointed. Had been for dinner years ago before owner changed.. Then food was very good and feeling wad upscale. This time went for lunch. Waitress and host were nice. Chili very average and not hot; ribs had sauce like catsup. Fries seemed like they were out of freezer.Small glass of wine for $11.50. Place seemed run down. Diner type atmosphere. Plastic table cloths. Outside view unkempt. Definitely not for foodies.

This is a very cool place; the restaurant, the bar, and the band. Food is great, people are great and the band is fun.

Paxton server and Rae in bar was attentive and accommodating. We did not care for venison stuffed mushrooms; the meat was rare. Paxton removed from ticket as we each only had one. Hubby liked onion rings and the tri tip platter and pecan pie. Rabbit medallions were dry and salty. The grounds housed historic stagecoach era buildings. Unfortunately it was 85 degrees and 85% humidity so very hot in dining area. Entertainment was the arriving wedding party.

Great location, the food was good. I had the tri tip and my wife had the French dip. We went on a Thursday for lunch, not too busy. Lots of birds and trees. There were some flies that we on everything.

So, East Coast guy here visiting the Santa Barbara area with my girlfriend. Her Uncle, very familiar with the area, showed us around and made a point of bringing us here to try the tri tip BBQ. We visited on a Saturday around 2pm. It was busy, but not overcrowded. We had to park further down the road but certainly within a 2-minute walking distance. The tri tip sandwich is what you want to come here for. It's loaded with meat and there is a toppings station to apply your favorite sauce. I would highly recommend the Apple Horseradish sauce and if chosen, be sure to put plenty of it on top. The meat and bread soaks it in quickly and my biggest regret was not loading it up with more sauce. There is live music and a general sense of "fun" at this hidden stop. Make a point of visiting here.

Loved this former stagecoach stop. Food was tasty; waiter was excellent; scenery was incredible. Well worth the trip.

Got this place recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. The place is super cute and cozy. The service was great and the staff very helpful. The food was amazing and the portions were good. Found the parking easy. Can definitely recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyPoor Customer Service and Food was ok
The woman selling the tri-tip sandwiches yesterday was rude and made my group want to leave and eat in the car. We were sitting outside on a bench about to eat the tri-trip sandwhiches when she came running up to us yelling, "HEY! HEY! HEY!" It seemed like everyone around us turned to look at our group. She said, "You can't bring your own beverages. This is a restaurant, not a park." Why not calmly walk up to us and not make a scene? Why run and start screaming from 15 feet away? This could have been avoided with a sign and some common courtesy. It ruined the meal and we will never come back.

If youโre in Santa Barbara or on your way to the wineries of Santa Ynez, this is a must visit restaurant. Tucked in the Santa Ynez mountains about 15 minutes out of Santa Barbara, this historic stage coach stop offers history, great food, cold beer, and a friendly staff. My friends and I had their famous tri-tip sandwich which was on a fresh, crusty roll and served with three yummy sauces: creamy mustard seed; barbecue; and salsa. Our sides ranged from coleslaw to fresh greens and potato salad. All was delicious.

Came here with the wife for lunch. Made reservations weeks ago yet there were already 30+ people waiting when we arrived. Had to wait at least 20 minutes for a table. After finally seated, we shared the French dip sandwich and fries and a cup of chili. The thick cut tri tip was cooked perfect for a sandwich, smoky, tender and well seasoned. The chili was tomatoe based, with beans, ground beef and the right amount of spices. The service was ok. Had to wait for drinks a couple of different times. Other than that, this is a hidden gem that is a must visit if on highway 154!

This was such a fun place and you must try the BBQ Tri-Tip Sandwich. It was seriously the best I've ever had. This is a must stop while visiting the area. I will definitely make this a regular place to eat when vacationing in Santa Barbara or Solvang.
Be the first to ReplyGood lunch and beers in a remote canyon setting
I always love coming to this secluded spot and seeing the old tavern. We were there for lunch an a warm Friday afternoon so just a bit of a wait for a table. Enjoyed tri tip sandwiches, which had very large slabs of meat in them and some wonderful onion rings (I wish I ordered an extra side of the onion rings). Service was very friendly and attentive. We chose to eat inside despite the lovely weather, just because the old buildings are so cool. Sat next to the warm fireplace...
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely wonderful!
Absolutely delicious food in an idyllic historic setting. We chose outdoor seating, shaded by blossoming trees, listening to birdsongs (We went in early May, when everything in the canyon was fresh and growing). The tri tip, ribs, pulled pork, and burgers are exquisite! The onion rings are seriously the best I've ever had, generously battered, golden, with a delicate crunch so perfect it makes you close your eyes in bliss! Dipped in ranch, they're the epitome of indulgence. The desserts were all excellent, the service was great, and we left stuffed and happy. If you're hungry after a hike or a long drive, this place will make all your appetite's dreams come true!

A great experience
I wrote this in 2019, but the review has disappeared. The only thing different is the COVID restrictions. The food is still fantastic.
Our recent lunch included a delicious Tri Tip sandwich, with the best BBQ sauce in Santa Barbara. The garlic roll was the perfect vessel, too.
She loved the quiche, and the crust was amazing. Potato salad is good too.
Atmosphere is great, inside of a rustic cabin, originally a stagecoach stop in the mountains. Not the most comfortable seats, but that's a minor complaint.
Bonus: We saw a bear digging for grub on the hill just above the Tavern.
We had a Sunday breakfast here last year, and it was just as good, with huge portions. Be sure to beat the Sunday afternoon rush. You may have to hike a mile or two from the Tavern.
